fix(forms): renaming a radio button to an existing group's name joins that group - #4977
Today, renaming a radio button in Properties to a name another radio group already has is
refused as a duplicate. So two buttons placed separately can never become one group. In a PDF,
a radio group is one field whose widgets are its buttons (ISO 32000-2 §12.7.5.2.4). Two fields
with one button each are two groups, so naming one after the other has to move its buttons
into the other field.
set_props now does that when both the renamed field and the field it is named after are radio
groups. In author/join.rs:
the renamed field leaves the form, together with its own value and field-level properties;
the target group keeps its own;
each of its buttons is re-parented under the target and appended to the target's /Kids;
a button whose export value (its on-state, the non-Off key of /AP /N) is already taken in
the target is renamed to the first free ChoiceN in /N, /D and /R. This is the name
"join the selected group" already gives a new button. Buttons of the joining field that
shared a value (one repeated on another page) share the new one, so they stay in unison;
a moved button shows as selected only if its value is the target's current value and one of
the target's own buttons has it, so the group never ends up with two buttons on;
a field that is its own widget is handled on both sides. The joining one sheds its field
keys. A target that is its own only button is first split into a field plus a widget. That
split is the one duplicate_field already did; it is now a shared split_merged, and the new
widget now takes the button's /A and its widget triggers in /AA (E X D U Fo Bl PO PC PV PI), while the field keeps K F V C.
Refused with an error (the engine keeps the edit only when it succeeds):
either group lists its export values in /Opt, because the button values are indices into it;
either field has no button;
the target is locked.
Renaming to a check box's or text field's name is still refused as a duplicate, as before.
Not in this PR is the other half of #4949, editing a button's export value, because #1952 is
working on it.
The Properties dialog already sends the rename through set_props. Afterwards it re-selects
the edited button by its object rather than its old index, because a joining button lands after
the group's own buttons (ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs). Headless, form_set_props with name
takes the same path.
a_joined_merged_groups_button_keeps_its_actions: a target that is its own button, with a
Mouse Up action, an On Focus trigger and a field-level Validate trigger, is joined, saved and
reopened. The button keeps both actions; the field keeps only Validate.
a_joining_merged_button_sheds_its_fields_triggers: a joining button that is its own field,
with Mouse Up, Validate and Calculate triggers, keeps only Mouse Up; one with only Validate
is left with no /AA.
a_joining_button_gets_a_free_export_value_when_choice_names_run_long: a group already
using Choice1 to Choice10000; the joining button gets Choice10001.
joining_by_name_is_only_for_radio_buttons_and_unlocked_groups, a guard that passes either
way
ui-egui: a_radio_button_joining_a_group_by_name_stays_selected. Two separately placed
one-button groups; the second is renamed into the first. The moved button is selected, an
arrow-key nudge moves it and not the group's first button, and undo and redo take the nudge
and the join back and forth.
automation: renaming_a_radio_button_to_a_groups_name_joins_the_group_through_tools. This
is the issue's case end to end: two buttons with the same export value, then a rename, a save
and a reopen. The result is one group with values S/Choice1, the selection kept, and the
new value fillable.
Revert proofs:
Switching off the join fails the three behaviour tests and the automation one. The automation
test fails with the rename refused as a duplicate, which is the reported bug.
Switching off only the on-state rename fails the taken-export-value test.
Renaming each clashing button separately (the first version of this branch) fails the
shared-value test: [Choice1, Choice2, Choice3] instead of [Choice1, Choice2, Choice2].
Leaving /A and the /AA widget triggers on the field fails the actions test.
Keeping a joining merged button's whole /AA fails the triggers test.
Restoring the 10,000-name cap fails the ChoiceN test.
Re-selecting by the old index fails the ui-egui test: the selection is ("Group1", 0), the
group's own button.
Never-crash
No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests
No input-derived indexing. The page lookup in split_merged moved from indexing to get. The ChoiceN search tries at most one more name than are taken, so it always
finds a free one. The fresh names are chosen before anything is written, so if none were
found the edit would fail with the document unchanged.

Behaviour from ISO 32000-2 §12.7.5.2.4 (radio buttons and their export values) and
§12.7.4 (the field tree)
The logic is adapted from pdfcer (github.com/KenM76/pdfcer, MIT, by the author of this PR),
commit 79870b56 ("move a radio button into another radio group"), with the fresh on-state rule
from 116f48d3. It was rewritten onto pdfcraft-forms' own Field/Widget types and helpers
(detach, drop_from_calculation_order). pdfcer was itself built from the specification and
black-box behaviour. I'm saying so up front so you can apply your clean-room rule as you see
fit.
Security
No paths, network or control-channel changes.
Parity and reach
form.add-radio in parity/acrobat-features.toml gains the new tests as evidence. Its
notes now describe joining by name and say that editing an export value is still missing.
Reachable headlessly through form_set_props
Anything a reviewer should look at first
Whose properties win. The group being joined keeps its value and its field-level
properties (flags, tooltip, default). The joining field's are dropped with it. Any other
property changed in the same Properties edit is written to the joining button first, then it
moves.
The group's existing buttons are redrawn after the join, not only the moved ones, through
the same redraw_field a value change uses.
The joining field's selection is dropped when the group has none, as it is when the
group has one. Keeping it instead is a one-line change if you prefer that.
/Opt groups are refused rather than having their /Opt arrays merged. That is rare
enough for hand-made groups that refusing seemed safer than re-indexing.
Renaming a radio button to match another group’s name combines the buttons into one group.
When export values conflict, affected buttons receive available values. The existing group selection is preserved, and the combined group can be filled using its updated values.
Bug Fixes
Radio-group joins preserve button behavior and page placement; unsupported joins, including those involving locked groups or groups with listed options, are blocked.
After a rename, the edited button remains selected. Undo and redo restore group names and button positions.
…torytold#4949)
Renaming a radio button to an existing radio group's name was refused as
a duplicate, so buttons placed separately could never become one group.
set_props now moves the renamed field's buttons into the named group
(ISO 32000-2 §12.7.5.2.4: a group is one field whose widgets are its
buttons). A clashing export value is renamed to the first free ChoiceN
in /AP /N, /D and /R; a moved button is on only if its value is the
group's value; merged field+widgets are handled on both sides (the
target split via split_merged, now shared with duplicate_field).
Refused when either group has /Opt, has no button, or the target is
locked.

Review follow-up. A clash is checked against the group's own values only,
and each clashing value gets one fresh ChoiceN shared by every joining
button that had it, so a button repeated on another page stays in unison.
The group's value selects a moved button only when one of the group's own
buttons has it. A joining field that is its own widget leaves the
calculation order too.

Renaming a radio field to the name of an existing radio field can join the groups when eligibility checks pass. The implementation moves widgets, handles export-value conflicts, updates appearances and selections, and redraws the result. Tests cover saving and reopening, field structures, UI selection, and rejected joins.

Rename handling and group join crates/forms/src/author.rs, crates/forms/src/author/edit.rs, crates/forms/src/author/join.rs, crates/forms/src/author/lifecycle.rs, crates/forms/src/author/tree.rs
The edit path detects a matching radio field name and validates the join. Eligible joins move source widgets into the target group, assign free ChoiceN values when export values conflict, and update appearance states and selections. Merged fields and widgets are split while retaining the relevant field and widget actions.
Widget selection after rename crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/prepare.rs
The properties dialog finds the edited widget by object ID after the rename and selects its new index. The UI test covers selection, nudging, undo, and redo.
Join behavior coverage and parity crates/forms/src/tests.rs, crates/automation/tests/it/automation.rs, parity/acrobat-features.toml
Tests cover group structure, export-value conflicts, selection preservation, save and reopen, and rejected joins. The parity entry records the rename behavior, /Opt refusal condition, and export-value editing limitation.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 969ca
Renaming a radio group into another group may reset custom appearances on the target group's untouched buttons to default marks. The core join behavior is otherwise covered by tests, so this is a bounded follow-up rather than a blocker.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 969ca
The change is contained to the edited document. Normal application editing retains permission checks, transactional updates, and undo protection. Residual uncertainty concerns callers using the lower-level forms API without equivalent rollback protection.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated mutation scope is the selected document: its field tree, widgets, page annotation membership, appearances, and calculation references. The traced automation route requests an existing document edit rather than introducing a separate authority-bearing operation.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The traced session route invokes document permission checks before editing. set_props preserves the existing source-lock policy, and join validation independently rejects a locked target before transferring widgets.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — For session-backed editing, an error or guarded failure during detach, reparenting, appearance updates, or final redraw does not commit the working document. This is the principal failure-containment control for the new ownership transition; equivalent protection for external direct library consumers was not established.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Document the lower-level forms API's caller-owned transaction requirement, or provide a transactional wrapper, so future integrations preserve the application's existing rollback guarantee.

Review follow-up (CodeRabbit): the join read the target's /Kids only when
it was a direct array, so an indirect one was replaced by the moved
buttons alone and the group's own buttons were lost. It now reads
through the reference with tree.rs's list_of, as link() does.

Reviewed 2c054abdce3beaf2654bec33b33205112ac06ce1. Three correctness issues remain:
[P2] Keep the moved widget selected after joining.join.rs:97–99 appends the source widgets after the target's widgets, but dialogs.rs:1549 still selects (new_name, d.widget). With two separately placed one-button groups, renaming the second into the first selects the original target button at index 0, not the moved button at index 1. The next arrow-key nudge or Position edit consequently changes the wrong button. Please remap selection by the widget's object identity after the edit and cover rename → nudge/Position plus undo/redo. This is a functional regression in the new Properties flow, not merely cosmetic selection movement.
[P2] Preserve target widget actions when splitting a merged target. The new split_merged call copies only WIDGET_KEYS into the new widget. That list omits /A and widget-trigger entries in /AA, so a merged target with Mouse Up or On Focus actions leaves those actions on the now-non-widget field, while its replacement widget has none. field_actions reads the widget, without a parent fallback, and now returns no such actions. Transfer the widget actions while retaining field-level /AA entries on the field; add a merged-target join/save/reopen regression.
The existing fresh-state exhaustion finding is still valid. I independently checked the existing review against join.rs:62–83: when Choice1 through Choice10000 are occupied, fresh is None, the source keeps its conflicting export value, and the join still succeeds. If that value is selected in the target, the moved button is selected too; the formerly independent choices can no longer be selected separately. Fail atomically on exhaustion or use an input-bounded allocation that guarantees an unused value. This confirms the existing finding rather than opening a duplicate inline thread.
The earlier indirect-/Kids issue is fixed by list_of, and its save/reopen regression covers both sets of buttons. I also inspected the shared-export, merged-widget, guard and automation tests and the engine's copy-on-edit error/undo path.
Validation: the exact-head CI run and SonarCloud run are action_required with no jobs, so no hosted test execution could be verified. This was source review, not an executed test pass; author-reported local results are not independent validation.
…ys gets a free value
Review follow-ups on storytold#4977:
- ui-egui: after a rename, the Properties dialog re-selects the edited
widget by object, not by its old index. A button that joins a group is
appended after the group's own buttons, so the old index selected the
group's first button and a nudge moved the wrong one.
- split_merged (join and Duplicate): the new widget takes /A and the
widget triggers of /AA (E X D U Fo Bl PO PC PV PI); the field keeps
K F V C.
- join: a clashing export value searches at most taken + 1 ChoiceN
names, so one is always free, and the names are chosen before
anything is written.
Tests: a_joined_merged_groups_button_keeps_its_actions,
a_joining_button_gets_a_free_export_value_when_choice_names_run_long,
a_radio_button_joining_a_group_by_name_stays_selected (ui-egui). Each
fails with its fix reverted.

Selection after a join. The Properties dialog now records the edited widget's object before the edit and, after it, finds that object's index in the (possibly renamed) field, so the moved button stays selected. New ui-egui test a_radio_button_joining_a_group_by_name_stays_selected: two separately placed one-button groups, rename the second into the first, then the selection is ("Group1", 1), an arrow-key nudge moves the moved button and leaves the group's own one in place, and two undos and two redos take the rename and the nudge back and forth. With the old index-based selection it fails with ("Group1", 0).
Widget actions in split_merged./A is now a widget key, and /AA is split by trigger: the widget triggers (E, X, D, U, Fo, Bl, PO, PC, PV, PI; ISO 32000-2 §12.6.3) go to the new widget, the field triggers (K, F, V, C) stay on the field, and an indirect /AA is read through. New forms test a_joined_merged_groups_button_keeps_its_actions: a merged target with Mouse Up, On Focus and a Validate script, joined, saved and reopened. field_actions returns the Mouse Up and On Focus actions, and the field keeps only V. It fails with the actions left on the field.
Fresh-state exhaustion. The ChoiceN search now tries at most one more name than are taken, so it always finds an unused one, with no fixed cap. The fresh names are also chosen before split_merged or anything else writes, so a failure would leave the document unchanged. New test a_joining_button_gets_a_free_export_value_when_choice_names_run_long: a group already using Choice1..Choice10000, and the joining button gets Choice10001. It fails with the 10,000-name cap restored.
Exact-head local gates: cargo fmt --check, clippy -D warnings on forms, automation and ui-egui (--all-targets), cargo test -p pdfcraft-forms (194), the automation form tests (25), the ui-egui prepare tests (36), cargo xtask layers, assets, parity, all green. CI here is still action_required (workflow approval for a first-time contributor), so these are my local results. The description is updated.

Remove field-only /AA triggers from a merged source widget.
If the source field is also its widget, this loop removes field keys but leaves its entire /AA. Field triggers such as /V and /C then remain on the widget after the source field is removed. Split the source /AA and retain only widget triggers. split_merged performs that separation for the target, but does not handle this source path. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

When the source radio field is also its widget, the join removed the
field-only keys but kept its whole /AA, so field triggers (K, F, V, C)
stayed on a dictionary that is now only a widget. Split it as

@coderabbitai Valid; thanks. Fixed in b8871e8 (the outside-diff Minor on join.rs:73-76).
When the source field is also its own widget, the join now splits its /AA the same way split_merged does for the target. It keeps the widget triggers (E X D U Fo Bl PO PC PV PI) and drops the field's (K F V C). If no trigger is left, it removes /AA.
The new test is a_joining_merged_button_sheds_its_fields_triggers. The source carries U, V and C. After join, save and reopen, the moved widget has only U. A second source with only V ends up with no /AA. With the split switched off, the test fails at the first assertion.
Gates: fmt, clippy forms and automation, forms 195, automation form 25.
@KenM76 Thanks. The source-widget branch in crates/forms/src/author/join.rs now resolves /AA, keeps widget triggers through split_triggers, and removes /AA when no widget triggers remain.
The regression test covers indirect /AA with mixed triggers and direct /AA with only a field trigger. Both cases include save and reopen. This addresses the reported concern. I inspected the code and test; I did not rerun the gates.
Adopt upstream's split set_props: rename_field returns the group a renamed
radio button joins, and redraw_or_join keeps set_props under the new
cognitive_complexity limit. join.rs imports explicitly (wildcard_imports).

What this changes
Part of #4949: the group name.
Today, renaming a radio button in Properties to a name another radio group already has is
refused as a duplicate. So two buttons placed separately can never become one group. In a PDF,
a radio group is one field whose widgets are its buttons (ISO 32000-2 §12.7.5.2.4). Two fields
with one button each are two groups, so naming one after the other has to move its buttons
into the other field.
set_propsnow does that when both the renamed field and the field it is named after are radiogroups. In
author/join.rs:the target group keeps its own;
/Kids;Offkey of/AP /N) is already taken inthe target is renamed to the first free
ChoiceNin/N,/Dand/R. This is the name"join the selected group" already gives a new button. Buttons of the joining field that
shared a value (one repeated on another page) share the new one, so they stay in unison;
the target's own buttons has it, so the group never ends up with two buttons on;
keys. A target that is its own only button is first split into a field plus a widget. That
split is the one
duplicate_fieldalready did; it is now a sharedsplit_merged, and the newwidget now takes the button's
/Aand its widget triggers in/AA(E X D U Fo Bl PO PC PV PI), while the field keepsK F V C.Refused with an error (the engine keeps the edit only when it succeeds):
/Opt, because the button values are indices into it;Renaming to a check box's or text field's name is still refused as a duplicate, as before.
Not in this PR is the other half of #4949, editing a button's export value, because #1952 is
working on it.
The Properties dialog already sends the rename through
set_props. Afterwards it re-selectsthe edited button by its object rather than its old index, because a joining button lands after
the group's own buttons (
ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs). Headless,form_set_propswithnametakes the same path.

§12.7.4 (the field tree)
The logic is adapted from pdfcer (
github.com/KenM76/pdfcer, MIT, by the author of this PR),commit 79870b56 ("move a radio button into another radio group"), with the fresh on-state rule
from 116f48d3. It was rewritten onto
pdfcraft-forms' ownField/Widgettypes and helpers(
detach,drop_from_calculation_order). pdfcer was itself built from the specification andblack-box behaviour. I'm saying so up front so you can apply your clean-room rule as you see
fit.

No paths, network or control-channel changes.
Parity and reach
form.add-radioinparity/acrobat-features.tomlgains the new tests as evidence. Itsnotes now describe joining by name and say that editing an export value is still missing.
form_set_propsAnything a reviewer should look at first
properties (flags, tooltip, default). The joining field's are dropped with it. Any other
property changed in the same Properties edit is written to the joining button first, then it
moves.
the same

form.add-radioparity entry. Whichever landssecond will need a small rebase; I'll do it here if this one is second.
/Optgroups are refused rather than having their/Optarrays merged. That is rareenough for hand-made groups that refusing seemed safer than re-indexing.
