LR-META-FILMSIM: read Fujifilm film simulation from the maker note - #3330
Fujifilm cameras record the film simulation in their maker note. LightCraft now reads it and makes it usable in the library:
Read:crates/meta/src/film_simulation.rs decodes FilmMode (0x1401) for colour looks and Saturation (0x1003) for black-and-white ones (Monochrome / Acros / Sepia, with R/Ye/G filters), which take FilmMode's place. Unknown codes give no name rather than a guess. Tag IDs and code meanings come from ExifTool's FujiFilm tag table (data only, no code): https://exiftool.org/TagNames/FujiFilm.html — the names are the ones the cameras' menus show. Parsing goes through the shared, bounds-checked lightcraft_tiff::makernote parser. Works for RAFs (Exif of the embedded JPEG) and Fujifilm JPEGs.
Catalog: new Meta::film_simulation, left out of the JSON when empty so older catalogs read unchanged. Filled at import and by Reload from Disk (no background backfill).
Info panel: a "Film simulation" row in the camera card.
Search:film:velvia, film:"classic chrome".
Smart albums: a "Film Simulation" rule in Camera Info.
Docs:LR-META-FILMSIM (🟡) in docs/parity-checklist.md; German strings added.
Applying or changing a look (own measured film-simulation profiles) is not part of this PR.
Verification
Unit tests: colour and monochrome codes, precedence, unknown codes, other makes, a truncated note; the film: search and the rule; Reload from Disk filling the field.
30 real X-S10 RAFs compared file by file with ExifTool: all match. This caught that the X-S10 writes 0x200 (ExifTool "F2/Fujichrome (Velvia)") for Velvia, now named "Velvia/Vivid". All 18 film simulations of the X-S10 were then checked against 378 in-camera conversions (X RAW Studio) of 21 RAFs, including the Acros / Monochrome filter variants and Sepia: every name matches.
Headless CLI import of real RAFs: film:vivid finds both, film:provia / film:"classic chrome" find none. Headless snapshot shows the Info row.
Note on local CI
Locally (Homebrew rustc 1.98.1, no CRAFT_FONTS_DIR) cargo xtask ci --quick fails on main as well: clippy if_same_then_else in apps/lightcraft/src/native_menu.rs:492, and accessibility::every_interactive_node_has_a_name_in_every_view_and_tool panicking in egui's fonts.rs. Both reproduce without this change and are not touched here. Clippy on the touched crates, their tests, parity, layers and assets pass.
Fujifilm film-simulation metadata appears in photo details when available. Search for photos with film:"classic chrome" or use Film Simulation in smart-album rules.
Improvements
Film-simulation metadata is read during import and can be filled in with Reload from Disk when missing. Existing metadata is preserved. Existing photos may need to be reloaded before this information appears or can be searched.
Limitations
Film simulations can be viewed and searched, but their look cannot be applied or changed in the app.

Walkthrough
The change reads Fujifilm film-simulation metadata from maker notes and carries it through metadata and catalog models. The values can be displayed in the Info panel, searched with film:, and used in smart-album rules.
Changes: Film simulation metadata

Summary
Read and propagate film simulation metadata crates/meta/src/film_simulation.rs, crates/meta/src/exif.rs, crates/meta/src/lib.rs, crates/catalog/src/model.rs, crates/engine/src/files/probe.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/convert.rs, crates/meta/src/xmp/tests.rs
The EXIF reader maps recognized Fujifilm maker-note codes to simulation names. Metadata and catalog models store the value, and probing and reload paths propagate it. Tests cover mappings, precedence, missing or unknown codes, and filling a missing value, including on a virtual copy.
Add search and rule matching crates/catalog/src/query.rs, crates/catalog/src/rules.rs, crates/catalog/src/rules/tests.rs
Catalog search supports case-insensitive film: substring matching. Smart-album rules expose filmSimulation in Camera Info and apply text matching. Tests cover matching and absent values.
Display and document the feature crates/ui-egui/src/panels/right/info.rs, crates/ui-egui/locales/de.json, docs/parity-checklist.md, docs/gaps.md
The Info panel displays nonempty film-simulation values. The German locale includes translations. The documentation records the supported behavior and notes that applying or changing simulations is unsupported.

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review 7afea
Recognized Fujifilm film simulations flow through import, reload, catalog search, smart albums, and the Info panel without an established current-head defect.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 7afea
The inspected change adds descriptive metadata without granting new privileges or changing access controls. File-derived values come from recognized names, search remains subject to existing catalog filters, and reload preserves populated values.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A supplier of a processed image can influence descriptive labels and resulting catalog selections by choosing recognized maker-note codes. Reload can propagate this metadata to linked virtual copies. The traced consumers use the value for matching and display, not as a profile, executable instruction or authority token.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The extractor checks the file-provided Make and parsed maker-note kind before mapping numeric tags to fixed names. These checks select a metadata format; they do not authenticate the image's origin. Parser resource limits and data-only downstream use provide the relevant containment in the inspected path.

I only now noticed #1209 (@MohammadTeimori), which reads the same maker-note tags and more (the full recipe, Copy recipe, photo.fujiRecipe, backfill). It predates this PR, so on reading the film simulation this one is a duplicate.
What this PR adds that #1209 doesn't: film: search (film:velvia, film:"classic chrome"), a Film Simulation smart-album rule, and the LR-META-FILMSIM checklist row.
Verification data that may help #1209 too: 30 X-S10 RAFs compared tag by tag with ExifTool, and 378 in-camera conversions (21 RAFs × all 18 X-S10 simulations, X RAW Studio), including Acros / Monochrome filter variants and Sepia. Two findings: the X-S10 writes FilmMode 0x200 for Velvia, and its B&W files carry no FilmMode tag at all, only Saturation (0x1003). #1209 handles both.
Proposal: if maintainers prefer #1209 for reading and display, I'll rebase this PR onto it and reduce it to the search term and the smart-album rule on top of its recipe. If they'd rather take the smaller change first (no catalog format bump), #1209 could build its recipe card on Meta::film_simulation. Either way, I'd rather not have two parsers for the same tags.
Fujifilm cameras record the film simulation in their maker note: colour
looks in FilmMode (0x1401), black-and-white ones (Monochrome, Acros,
Sepia, with filters) in Saturation (0x1003). LightCraft now reads it at
import and Reload from Disk, shows it in the Info panel, searches it with
`film:` and offers a Film Simulation smart-album rule. Unknown codes give
no name rather than a guess.
Checked against ExifTool on 30 X-S10 RAFs (Provia, Velvia): the X-S10
writes 0x200 for Velvia. Other codes come from the public ExifTool table
and synthetic tests.

…s checked
Reload filled missing camera fields (now including the film simulation) only on
the original, so virtual copies of older catalogs stayed without them. Twelve
in-camera conversions of one X-S10 RAF confirm nine more codes against ExifTool.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)
I read the head of the diff: the Fujifilm film simulation is read from the maker note (LR-META-FILMSIM). The catalog model gets film_simulation: String ("the film simulation a Fujifilm camera recorded, e.g. Classic Chrome; read at import or Reload from Disk. Read-only"), left out of the catalog JSON when empty so older catalogs read unchanged, and the search help gains a fielded token film:"classic chrome". Adding a field with skip_serializing_if and a default keeps catalogue compatibility in both directions, and a read-only field avoids a write-back path to the file. The maker note parser is untrusted input from the image file; it needs bounds on offsets and counts (a Fujifilm note has its own byte order and an offset table) and it must not panic on a truncated note. The tag value to name table is the content to check: the numbers for Fujifilm's film simulation mode (0x1401) and their names come from published tag lists (ExifTool's), which is data not code, and the PR should cite where the list came from. I read the model and the query doc. I have not run it, and no exact-head CI result exists for this head. Nothing was run.
I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
Bounds on the maker note.film_simulation.rs adds no parser of its own: it goes through the shared lightcraft_tiff::makernote::parse_makernote, which reads the FUJIFILM header's IFD offset with a bounds-checked read, slices the note with get(..) and checked_add, keeps Fujifilm's own little-endian order and note-relative offsets, and parses with fixed limits (64 IFDs, depth 3, 1 MiB value budget). Every failure gives None, so no film simulation is shown. a_truncated_note_gives_nothing cuts a note right after its entry count and checks that.
Source of the code table.4bcdeae adds the URL to the module doc, and the PR body now cites it: the tag IDs (FilmMode 0x1401, Saturation 0x1003) and the code-to-look mapping come from ExifTool's FujiFilm tag table (data only, no code read or copied): https://exiftool.org/TagNames/FujiFilm.html
The display names are the ones the cameras' menus show. The table was checked against real files: 30 X-S10 RAFs compared tag by tag with ExifTool, and all 18 X-S10 simulations against 378 X RAW Studio conversions.
The open question is still the overlap with #1209 (see my comment above). I'd rather not have two parsers for the same tags, and I'm fine with either order.
@cbram#1209 is updated to current main (07301cbd) at 65a7bdf, with the original contribution commits preserved. The remaining reader/relink review fixes are included, and all eight local CPU CI gates passed with craft-fonts. I also checked 46 of Lorenzo's X-H1 originals against ExifTool; the 23 RAF/JPEG pairs agree, including the dynamic-range corrections discussed there.
Your proposed follow-up for film: search and the Film Simulation smart-album rule sounds good to me. FujiRecipe remains the metadata source in #1209, so those additions can reuse it. The merge order is still the maintainers' decision. Velvia/Vivid naming and the no-FilmMode monochrome cases are covered here; thanks for the X-S10 evidence.
