Reads Fujifilm MakerNote recipes from camera JPEGs, RAF embedded EXIF and Fujifilm TIFF/DNG files. Info shows the settings and Copy recipe; CLI/MCP expose the same values through photo.fujiRecipe, and All Metadata includes Fujifilm rows. Fixes #1203.

Import and Reload store the recipe or known absence. Older eligible photos are read on a worker, with cache identity scoped to the library and file. Relink, Convert to DNG and Find Missing refresh or invalidate stale recipes; undo restores the prior metadata. Relinking also evicts the source and destination recipe cache entries, including late worker results and changes applied before a save failure. This update completes short/interrupted reads, reuses existing TIFF/EXIF buffers, handles late TIFF IFDs within the read cap and refreshes corrected labels on Reload even when bytes are unchanged.

Manual dynamic range now shows DR100/DR200/DR400 from DevelopmentDynamicRange instead of just Manual. D-Range Priority shows Weak/Strong/Auto instead of a misleading DR100, including the alternate strength-tag placement observed on the X-H1. Velvia uses the camera-menu name; monochrome/Acros filters and Sepia work without FilmMode.

This merges main at 07301cbd and preserves the original contribution commits. My opt-in public-profile-name entry is included; generated contributor statistics are unchanged. #3330's search and smart-album additions remain separate and can reuse FujiRecipe.

Opening a library upgrades it to catalog format 10; older builds refuse it. This changes metadata only, without applying film-simulation rendering or exposure-baseline corrections (#380/#2616). Tag data: https://exiftool.org/TagNames/FujiFilm.html (no third-party metadata code copied).

Validation:

  • 166 metadata unit tests passed; new dynamic-range cases first reproduced the failures.
  • 46 Lorenzo Fontanella X-H1 originals checked against ExifTool: 44 ColorChecker RAF/JPEG files plus one landscape Auto pair. All 23 pairs return identical recipes. Originals stay local under the supplied test permission.
  • Full cargo xtask ci: all 8 gates passed with craft-fonts and CPU rendering. The report records 183 skips (137 corpus, 35 GPU, 8 model, 2 font, 1 system).
  • Eight real-file CLI/import checks: recipe, clipboard text and All Metadata agree.
  • Fresh desktop/CLI build passed. Native control-channel and headless Info screenshots inspected; native loupe settled with no render queued and no headless fallback.
  • Independent source review found no remaining issues.

Includes the separately developed one-line TIFF CI prerequisite: Balanced rather than Fast lossless DEFLATE prevents the existing noisy 16-bit ZIP-size regression. The pre-existing Intel Arc/DX12 OOM stress-test failure is recorded separately; final local CI uses LIGHTCRAFT_GPU_BACKEND=off and craft-fonts, with skips reported explicitly.

Follow-up at 00ffa61a: the same-path/cached-destination relink regression first failed, then all 10 recipe-cache tests passed. All 166 metadata tests, 280 catalog tests, formatting and affected-package clippy (--all-targets, warnings denied) also passed. The full CI and native/corpus results above were run before this focused follow-up.

[P2] Key the recipe cache by library as well as photo

Open two libraries whose first photos have different Fujifilm recipes. Inspect photo 1 in the first library, switch libraries, then select photo 1 in the second. This cache accepts the old entry because it compares only id. Photo IDs start at 1 in each catalog; switch_library and library_changed preserve egui temporary data. The second photo therefore displays and copies the first library's recipe, or stays empty if the first cached result had no recipe. Include library_generation in the cache key, or invalidate it when the library changes.

Changed lines. An isolated execution of the verbatim cache-selection block with a persistent data shim returned Classic Chrome after the current recipe changed to Eterna at id 1. load_recipe ran once. Changing the ID to 2 loaded Eterna. Production switch and catalog allocation were source-traced, not UI-executed.

[P2] Move recipe file reads out of Info panel drawing

Every new Info-panel photo calls load_recipe synchronously during drawing, including photos from other camera makes. The command reaches read_for_recipe, which reads the entire file unless it has a RAF header. Browsing a non-Fujifilm RAW library therefore adds a full original read and metadata parse to each selection on the UI thread. Only the most recent photo is cached, so alternating between two photos repeats the reads. On large files or slow original storage, input and repaint wait for that I/O. Use a background read or already imported metadata, and skip irrelevant photos before reading their originals.

Changed lines. The verbatim read_for_recipe helper returned all 1,048,576 bytes of an original non-Fuji fixture. Source trace is info -> recipe_card -> load_recipe -> LightcraftApp::run -> Session::execute -> photo.fujiRecipe -> read_recipe_file. No UI latency or performance benchmark was run.

Import stores the recipe. Older photos are read in the background, and the cache includes the library so photo ids cannot leak across catalogs. Catalog format is 10. The Unix-only catalog test is not compiled on Windows, so clippy stays clean there.

Both notes are addressed in 5aa0f58.

The Info panel no longer keeps the recipe in egui temporary data keyed only by photo id. The memory key is the library generation, the path, the content hash, and the file size. Photo 1 in a second catalog cannot show or copy the first catalog's recipe. A result that finishes after a library switch is dropped.

Import and Reload store the recipe on the photo, including a file that has none, so those photos are not opened again just to draw Info. A photo from an older catalog is read on a worker thread, and only when it might be Fujifilm: a RAF, a JPEG or TIFF whose camera make was never stored, or a camera string that names Fujifilm. A Nikon or Canon raw is not opened. A RAF read is the EXIF segment of the embedded preview, not the preview and not the sensor data. A header that runs past the cap is treated as no recipe, so it is not opened again on a timer. Opening Info does not mark the library unsaved.

Opening a library with this build saves catalog format 10. An older build will refuse that library.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 00ffa

The change is mergeable with a bounded follow-up: relinking while Info is hidden can trigger an unnecessary file read and briefly delay the recipe card. No incorrect recipe display or persisted-data loss was established.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 88223

The main risks are processing untrusted image metadata and upgrading libraries to a format older builds cannot open. Normal recipe reads have size limits, and background results are isolated by library identity. Equivalent resource limits have not been established for every supported read path.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is untrusted image metadata processed with the application's existing file-access authority, affecting process resources and photo metadata. The new query takes a photo identity rather than an arbitrary path and obtains the file source from the active catalog. The inspected flow does not establish a new privileged execution or cross-service boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The default recipe reader limits JPEG metadata scanning to 8 MiB and TIFF prefixes to 4 MiB, and rejects RAF preview declarations above 64 MiB while limiting reads to the declared preview. MakerNote parsing uses checked slice bounds, at most 64 IFDs, depth three and a 1 MiB value budget. Recipe output requires a Fujifilm note with nonempty decoded rows.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Configured byte-reader branches pass the returned whole-file buffer directly to recipe_from_bytes, without the default disk-window limits. Separately, the new All Metadata recipe call copies the entire input for a parseable direct TIFF while its original buffer remains held. This establishes additional memory cost, not a demonstrated denial-of-service; runtime bounds for configured readers remain unverified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider a bounded metadata-read contract for configured readers so recipe extraction has comparable resource containment across hosts, rather than relying on a whole-file byte-reader contract.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Show Fujifilm film-simulation settings from the MakerNote" matches the main change. The PR adds read-only Fujifilm recipe extraction from MakerNote data (camera JPEGs, RAF embedded EXIF, and Fujifilm TIFF/DNG files), and shows the recipe in the Info panel with a Copy action, exposed through photo.fujiRecipe. The title is specific and concise. It does not mention the catalog format bump, the Convert to DNG and Find Missing refresh logic, or the TIFF Deflate change, but these are secondary to the primary change.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#1203] The PR adds read-only Fujifilm recipe extraction for camera JPEG, RAF embedded EXIF, and TIFF/DNG files. It adds Info display with Copy, photo.fujiRecipe, and Fujifilm rows in photo.allMetadata. The decoder covers the requested settings and uses Unknown (n) for unmapped codes. Synthetic tests cover parsing and lifecycle behavior, and the reported local ExifTool checks keep personal files out of the repository. The implementation does not add rendering, presets, recipe files, or catalog search.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The recipe implementation and its tests support [#1203]. The PR also changes crates/codecs/src/encode.rs from DeflateLevel::Fast to DeflateLevel::Balanced for a separate TIFF CI size regression. It adds an opt-in contributor profile entry in contributors/people.toml. Neither change implements or supports the Fujifilm recipe inspector.

Resolution

Remove the unrelated TIFF compression change and contributor profile entry from this PR, or move them to separate changes.

Relink and Convert to DNG take the recipe from a probe of the new file, or forget the old one when there is no probe. Find Missing Photos keeps the recipe only when the bytes match.

Partly fixed at 8822376f1: both original findings pass on the native path, with one short-read edge left in the new reader.

  • The cache separates libraries and replacement files. My retests_late_library_results_and_same_path_replacement_are_isolated passed late old-library results, a duplicate failure, new bytes at the same path and returning to the original bytes. Known Nikon RAW files were excluded. The contributor's cache regressions passed too.
  • Recipe I/O has left native Info-panel drawing. Source tracing reaches tasks::spawn and a native worker thread. Stored-recipe, known-absence, non-Fuji, Reload and Relink regressions passed. My bounded-reader control decoded Classic Chrome after reading 310 bytes from a RAF with a 3 MB tail, within its 312-byte budget.

[P3] Fill the bounded header before classifying it (crates/meta/src/fuji.rs:120). read may return fewer bytes than requested. A reader returning seven bytes per call makes this valid RAF look like an unknown format, so the lookup returns no recipe. Read up to the 92-byte header limit or EOF in a loop, including interrupted-read handling. retests_fragmented_raf_reads_stop_before_preview_pixels fails; a full-buffer decode and retests_bounded_raf_read_returns_recipe_without_reading_sensor_tail both confirm the fixture is valid. This is confirmed with a synthetic reader; occurrence with regular Mac files or network storage is unconfirmed.

Commands: cargo test --locked --no-fail-fast -p lightcraft-catalog -p lightcraft-engine -p lightcraft-meta -p lightcraft-ui-egui --features lightcraft-engine/denoise,lightcraft-engine/sam -- --nocapture; then cargo test --locked -p lightcraft-meta --lib fuji::tests::retests_ -- --nocapture. All 1,560 UI unit tests passed. Apart from the synthetic reader failure, the only failure was the U+25B8 accessibility glyph, also reproduced on plain main e381c1ae6.

Not tested: real filesystem short reads, slow-storage UI latency, browser runtime, real camera files, other platforms, integration with main or full CI.

I'm a contributor, not a maintainer. I overlapped with this in #3330 (film simulation only, plus film: search and a smart-album rule) and have proposed there to rebase onto this PR rather than keep two parsers.

Data from my X-S10 that may be useful here:

  • 30 RAFs compared tag by tag with ExifTool, and 378 in-camera conversions from X RAW Studio (21 RAFs × all 18 X-S10 film simulations, including Acros / Monochrome with Ye / R / G filters and Sepia).
  • B&W files have no FilmMode (0x1401) tag at all; the look is only in Saturation (0x1003). Your (None, Some(filter)) branch covers this.
  • The X-S10 writes FilmMode 0x200 for Velvia. This PR shows it as ExifTool's "F2/Fujichrome (Velvia)"; the camera menu calls it "Velvia/Vivid", which may read better in the Info panel.

I haven't run this branch against those files. If it helps, I can do that once the conflicts with main are resolved and report any name that differs.

Test files for this PR, in case they help: Fujifilm X-H1 RAF + camera JPEG of a ColorChecker, one frame per colour film simulation the X-H1 has (PROVIA, Velvia, ASTIA, Classic Chrome, PRO Neg. Hi, PRO Neg. Std and ETERNA), plus DR100, DR200 and DR400 at ISO 800. Every file name says its film simulation or DR setting, so the decoded values can be checked against it.

X-H1 files for Fujifilm colour work:

  • A ColorChecker shot once per colour film simulation of the X-H1 (PROVIA, Velvia, ASTIA, Classic Chrome, PRO Neg. Hi, PRO Neg. Std, ETERNA): RAF + camera JPEG, straight out of camera, white balance fixed at 5600 K, tone, colour, sharpness and noise reduction at 0. The film simulation is in each file name.
  • The camera JPEGs are Adobe RGB. As far as I can tell from the code, for a RAF LightCraft takes this from the JPEG's own EXIF (ColorSpace Uncalibrated with InteropIndex R03), because the container fallback in embedded_preview_color_space doesn't cover RAF. These files would confirm that the per-file camera-JPEG fit reads them as Adobe RGB.

Film simulation is right on all 21. That covers PROVIA, Velvia, ASTIA, Classic Chrome, PRO Neg. Hi, PRO Neg. Std, ETERNA, Acros and Monochrome with each Ye / R / G filter, and Sepia. The B&W frames have no FilmMode tag and come out right from Saturation (0x1003), as on the X-S10 above. Color is correctly left out on them.

Two gaps in the Dynamic range row:

  • DR100 / DR200 / DR400 frames all show Dynamic range = Manual. That is DynamicRangeSetting (0x1402) = 1, which only says the setting is manual. The percentage is in DevelopmentDynamicRange (0x1403): 100, 200 and 400 on these frames. With 0x1402 = 1, the row could show the 0x1403 value instead (DR100 / DR200 / DR400).
  • D-Range Priority frames show Dynamic range = DR100, which is misleading: their raw data sits 1.0 and 2.5 EV under DR100, like DR200 and DR400. These files have no 0x1402 at all, so the reader falls back to DynamicRange (0x1400) = 1. The setting is in 0x1443 (DRangePriority = 1) and 0x1444 (1 = Weak, 2 = Strong). When 0x1443 is present, a D-Range priority = Weak / Strong row, with no DR100 row, would match the camera.

The measured effect of each DR mode on the raw and the JPEG is in #2616.

Merge current main while preserving the original recipe contribution. Port
recipe hooks and tests to current modules; finish bounded fragmented reads,
reuse EXIF buffers and invalidate stale file-swap recipes without UI-thread I/O.
Reload corrects stored recipe labels even when file bytes are unchanged.

Read manual DR percentages and D-Range Priority with the strength-tag fallback
observed in X-H1 files. Preserve unknown/missing metadata and use Velvia/Vivid.
Include the contributor's explicit public-profile-name preference and the
one-line balanced TIFF compression prerequisite for the existing size test.

Validation: all eight cargo xtask ci gates pass with craft-fonts and CPU mode;
166 metadata tests; 46 real X-H1 files compared with ExifTool; eight CLI/import
and All Metadata checks; native and headless Info screenshots inspected.
The 183 corpus/GPU/model/font/system skips and upstream DX12 limitation are
recorded separately. No camera originals are redistributed.

Updated in 65a7bdf and merged current main (07301cbd) while preserving the original contribution commits.

@AlexChambers: bounded headers now fill across short reads and retry interruptions, including inside RAF previews. Fragmented-reader regressions cover JPEG, RAF and TIFF, with read budgets that stop before image/sensor tails.

@radialmonster @Lorenzoeffe: the manual DR row now uses DevelopmentDynamicRange for DR100/DR200/DR400. D-Range Priority replaces the misleading DR100 row with Weak/Strong/Auto. I checked your 44 X-H1 ColorChecker originals plus a landscape Auto pair against ExifTool: all 23 RAF/JPEG pairs return identical recipes. Fixed files store strength in 0x1444, while the Auto pair uses 0x1445; the reader prefers the mode's documented tag, then falls back to the other when absent. Missing/unknown values stay explicit. The 5600 K readout also matches. Originals remain local under the supplied development/test permission.

@cbram: Velvia now uses Velvia/Vivid; all supported monochrome/Acros filters and Sepia are covered without FilmMode. Search and smart-album work remain with #3330 and can reuse FujiRecipe rather than add another reader.

Validation: all eight cargo xtask ci gates passed with craft-fonts and CPU rendering; 166 metadata tests; eight real-file CLI/import checks where recipe, text and All Metadata agree; fresh desktop/CLI build; native control-channel and headless Info screenshots inspected. The native loupe settled with no queued render and no headless fallback. CI explicitly records 183 corpus/GPU/model/font/system skips; the existing Intel Arc/DX12 OOM stress-test failure remains separate.

This stays metadata-only. Exposure-baseline corrections/RawExposureBias (#2616), camera-profile fitting, and film-simulation rendering remain separate. Catalog format 10 requires a new build; older builds refuse that format.

Avoid copying the whole TIFF or DNG on each recipe lookup.

recipe_from_bytes passes its input through embedded, which copies the entire TIFF into Embedded.exif. For TIFF input, parse the bytes directly with recipe_from_exif, as the TIFF branch of embedded already does. This removes a file-sized allocation for each lookup.

Cover the known-absent recipe state in the catalog round-trip test.

The round-trip test sets fuji_recipe_known to true only together with a stored recipe. If a change drops the flag when no recipe is stored, this test still passes. Add a round-trip case with fuji_recipe_known: true and fuji_recipe: None.

Tested 65a7bdf on the X-S10 set: lightcraft_meta::read_recipe_file (through a local example binary, not committed) on 378 X RAW Studio JPEGs and 27 RAFs.

JPEGs (21 RAFs × all 18 X-S10 simulations). I compared each file with the .FP3 profile X RAW Studio saved next to it. The film simulation matches in 378 of 378: Provia, Velvia, Astia, Classic Chrome, Pro Neg. Hi/Std, Classic Negative, Eterna, Bleach Bypass, Acros and its Ye/R/G filters, B&W and its Ye/R/G filters, and Sepia, 21 files each. The other rows match their profile in every file as well: DR, white balance and shift, grain, highlight/shadow, Color Chrome, FX Blue, sharpness, colour, noise reduction, clarity. The 189 monochrome files have no Color row, which is right for B&W. No file returned nothing or an error. One caveat: every conversion was neutral (DR100, everything at 0), so apart from the film simulation the JPEGs only check the default values.

RAFs (27, as shot). These carry non-default settings, and every recipe row matches ExifTool. 12 Velvia, 15 Provia; 5 manual DR200, 22 DR Auto; H/S −1/−1 on 22.

cargo test -p lightcraft-meta passes here.

One small naming point: Provia and Astia keep ExifTool's labels (F0/Standard (Provia), F1b/Studio Portrait Smooth Skin Tone (Astia)). Everything else uses the camera's name (Velvia/Vivid, Classic Chrome). The menu shows PROVIA/STANDARD and ASTIA/SOFT, so Provia/Standard and Astia/Soft would match it. That's your call. The film: follow-up matches substrings, so it works with either.

Once #1209 lands, I'll rebase #3330 onto FujiRecipe and cut it down to film: search and the smart-album rule.

@MohammadTeimori this branch conflicts with main now: 874 commits behind, with conflicts in 5 files. In case it saves you time, I pushed a merge of current main into your branch here: radialmonster:fuji-recipe-inspector-main (8ed668983). Your 5 commits are unchanged, with one merge commit on top.

Main had split most of the conflicting files, so your additions moved with them:

  • files.rs: the fuji_recipe / fuji_recipe_known fields are in files/probe.rs, and the probe test is in files/tests.rs.
  • lib.rs: tests_fuji.rs is now tests/fuji.rs.
  • xmp.rs: added fuji_recipe: None to the round-trip fixture in xmp/tests.rs.
  • ui-egui/src/lib.rs: mod fuji_recipe; and the recipes field are back. Its initialiser is in app.rs, where main moved the constructor.
  • panels/right.rs: the recipe card functions are in right/info.rs, called after camera_card.

On that commit, workspace check, clippy (-D warnings) and fmt are clean. lightcraft-meta tests pass (160 unit tests), and lightcraft-engine --lib passes 1430. To use it: git pull https://github.com/radialmonster/lightcraft.git fuji-recipe-inspector-main, then push.

Evict the source and destination recipe cache keys after relink, including applied-but-unsaved changes, and discard late results while preserving unrelated entries. Clarify the EXIF/container API, parse TIFF recipes without copying the file, and cover known recipe absence.

Validation: relink regression failed before the fix; all 10 cache tests, 166 metadata tests and 280 catalog tests passed. Formatting and clippy for all targets of the affected packages passed. Independent source review found no issues.

Follow-up pushed as 00ffa61a.

Thanks @cbram for checking all 405 X-S10 files and for keeping #3330's follow-up on the shared FujiRecipe source. I am retaining the existing Provia/Astia labels in this refresh; your substring search remains compatible with both spellings.

The additional review fixes now cover source/destination cache eviction on relink, including the same-path case and an old worker completing afterward. Only the affected file keys are evicted; unrelated cached recipes stay available. Applied relinks that return NotSaved are covered too. The direct engine and Locate UI routes, cached destination, and pending-read cases are exercised in the regression; all 10 recipe-cache tests pass.

I also split the two recipe API contracts in the README, avoided the TIFF copy in the public recipe_from_bytes path, and covered known recipe absence in the catalog round-trip test.

Thanks for rebasing, @MohammadTeimori. I've removed the fuji-recipe-inspector-main merge branch from my fork, as it's no longer needed.

A relink clears that file from the waiting queue as well as the cache, so a finished read of another photo does not start the old path.

@MohammadTeimori I ran photo.fujiRecipe from 00ffa61a on all 22 of @Lorenzoeffe's X-H1 RAFs, and it agrees with exiftool on every file. That covers every film simulation, including Acros, Monochrome and Sepia with their filters, plus DR100/200/400 and D-Range Priority Weak and Strong. The D-Range Priority frames correctly show the priority row without a DR row. The newer 899849417 only touches the UI's queued read, so this still applies.

Thanks @radialmonster for running all 22 X-H1 raws. Good to hear the film simulations, DR100/200/400, and D-Range Priority all match ExifTool. The later cache commit only changes the queued read, so that check still stands.
