PivotTable slicers in Excel files were dropped on open with the warning "an embedded object (SmartArt, OLE...) was skipped", and were lost on save.

An Excel 2010+ PivotTable slicer is spread over several parts: a drawing frame (sle:slicer inside mc:AlternateContent, with a fallback text shape for older readers), a slicer part (xl/slicers/slicerN.xml: caption, columns, style, button height), a slicer cache (xl/slicerCaches/slicerCacheN.xml: source field, connected PivotTables, and tabular items with their selected flags), plus the workbook x14:slicerCaches and sheet x14:slicerList ext entries. GridCraft only read the drawing, and treated the frame as an unknown embedded object.

What changed

  • Model (crates/model/src/features.rs). Slicer now has a source: SlicerSource enum: Table { table, column, selected } (the existing table slicer) or Pivot { pivots, field, sort, cross_filter, show_missing }. It also gains name, style and row_height. A pivot slicer stores no selection of its own: the selection is each connected PivotTable's PivotFilter on the field, which is what Excel stores as hidden pivot items, so the two always agree. PivotFilter gains hidden, for a field the PivotTable filters without showing a report filter cell (a slicer on a field outside Rows and Columns). It also gains date_group: the date grouping its items are in when no Rows/Columns field implies it. In Excel the grouping belongs to the cache field (ECMA-376 §18.10.1.33), so a Date field grouped by months keeps its months when it is in no area, and a filter on a field grouped at several levels names the level it filters. PivotTable::field_group gives the grouping of a field's base cache field (the finest level).
  • Import (new crates/xlsx/src/slicer.rs, hooks in drawing.rs, sheet_read.rs, read.rs, pivot.rs). The frame is taken from the a14 choice, not the fallback. The slicer part and the slicer cache come from the sheet and workbook ext lists. Selected items (s="1") are mapped through the pivot cache's shared items. Sort order, crossFilter and showMissing are kept. Hidden items of a field in no area are read as a hidden filter. The embedded-object warning is gone only for slicer frames: SmartArt, OLE and other graphic frames still warn. A slicer whose cache, PivotTable or frame is missing is skipped with one specific warning (its frame doesn't add a second, generic one). A slicer whose cache field isn't a source column, such as a Years slicer on a Date grouped by years and months (Excel keeps the coarser level in its own cache field), is skipped with a warning that says so: the model's slicer lists the finest level, so mapping it to Date would show months instead of years.
  • Behaviour (crates/engine/src/cmd/slicer.rs, crates/engine/src/pivot.rs). The tiles are the pivot field's items, in the slicer's sort order, with the selection read from the PivotTables. On a date-grouped field they are the groups of the base cache field (Qtr1, Jan...; with several levels, the finest one, which is what Excel's slicer lists and what the slicer cache is written from), so they match the PivotTable's filter. This also holds when the field is in no area of the PivotTable, Excel's usual dashboard layout (a slicer on Date by months, a PivotTable by Region): compute, the tiles and the writer use the filter's grouping. slicer.toggle, slicer.selectAll/slicer.clear and clicking a tile set the field's item selection on every connected PivotTable and refresh them. Ctrl-clicking the last selected tile leaves it selected (next_selection), as in Excel, so a slicer never empties its PivotTables. Renaming a sheet updates the slicer's PivotTable links. Deleting a PivotTable disconnects it from its slicers.
  • Rendering (crates/ui-egui/src/chartview.rs). Pivot slicers use the same tile layout as table slicers, with the button height from the file. Tiles with no data under the PivotTables' other filters are dimmed, and with the default crossFilter they move to the end.
  • Export (slicer.rs, pivot.rs, sheet_write.rs, write.rs). Saving writes the slicer cache (tabular items with s flags, pivotTables, sort order, crossFilter, showMissing), the slicer part, an sle:slicer graphicFrame in mc:AlternateContent with a fallback shape, the workbook x14:slicerCaches and sheet x14:slicerList ext entries, the Slicer_* defined name, content types and relationships. The slicer cache's pivotTable tabId is the sheetId the workbook writes for the PivotTable's sheet, which counts kept chart sheets. A date grouping that only a filter holds (a field in no area) is still written to the pivot cache, with the field's items in the PivotTable. The pivot cache gets its x14:pivotCacheDefinition id so the slicer cache can refer to it, and the slicer field's items are written to the PivotTable even when it is in no area. The PivotTables a slicer connects (merged across slicers that share a PivotTable) are written with one shared pivot cache (PivotWriter::write_cache, build_cache over all of them, can_share), and every one is listed in the slicer cache's pivotTables, as Excel requires. A date-grouped slicer field's items are written in date order.
  • Docs: gaps.md §3 and §8 (including the connection limit below), file-format-parity.md, target-app-parity.md.

Tests

  • pivot_slicer_selects_items_of_its_pivot_tables (engine). Tiles follow the pivot field. A click on a Rows field selects the item and refreshes the table. A click on a field outside Rows and Columns adds a hidden filter with no filter rows, and the grand total drops. Multi-select, clear, and a slicer naming a missing PivotTable (no tiles, clicks refused) are covered too.
  • pivot_slicer_on_grouped_dates_shows_the_groups (engine). On a Date field grouped by quarters, the tiles are Qtr1–Qtr4, a pivot.filter on Qtr1 shows on the tiles, and clicking Qtr3 filters the PivotTable to Qtr3.
  • pivot_slicer_keeps_one_item_selected (engine). Ctrl-clicking every tile off leaves the last one selected, and the PivotTable keeps its row.
  • pivot_slicer_round_trips (xlsx). Checks every part a save writes (cache, slicer, content types, workbook and sheet ext lists, the AlternateContent frame with its fallback). After reopening, the slicer, its anchor and the pivot filter match, and a second save is stable.
  • pivot_slicer_keeps_every_connected_pivot_table (xlsx). A slicer connected to two PivotTables on the same source (one with the field hidden) writes both in the slicer cache, both PivotTables use the same cacheId, and after reopening the slicer still names both and every PivotTable's fields and filters match.
  • pivot_slicer_on_grouped_dates_writes_the_groups (xlsx). The slicer cache of a quarter-grouped Date field lists the six group items in date order with only the selected quarter flagged, and the filter and slicer survive reopening.
  • pivot_slicer_on_grouped_date_in_no_area_keeps_the_grouping (engine). A file with a Date slicer grouped by months on Jan and Feb, and a PivotTable by Region with Date in no area, opens with 12 month tiles (Jan and Feb selected) and shows East 100, West 50, total 150. Clicking Mar adds it, and the selection and months survive a save; Select All keeps the months.
  • move_field_keeps_the_date_grouping (engine). pivot.moveField now moves a field between Rows, Columns and Filters through the same path as pivot.addField. A Date on Columns grouped by months, moved to Filters, keeps the months on the report filter; moved on to Rows, it is grouped by months (Jan... rows). Undo restores the report filter with its months, and moving a field to Values still takes it off Rows.
  • pivot_slicer_on_multi_level_dates_lists_the_base_level (engine). With Date on Rows by quarters then months, the tiles are the 12 months; clicking Mar filters to Qtr1 / Mar 120, the slicer cache flags the base field's Mar item only, and after reopening only Mar is selected.
  • pivot_slicer_shares_no_cache_across_calculated_fields (xlsx). Two PivotTables a slicer connects, only one with a calculated field, don't share a cache, so the other doesn't get the calculated field on reopen; with the same calculated fields they share one and stay connected.
  • hostile_slicer_parts_warn_not_panic (xlsx). A cache that names a missing PivotTable, a bad tabId, an unknown pivot cache id, out-of-range item indices, a garbage cache part, a slicer pointing at a missing cache, and an empty slicer part all open without panicking. Each one warns once if the slicer is dropped, and saves again.
  • a_slicer_cache_names_its_pivot_sheet_by_the_written_sheet_id (xlsx). With a chart sheet kept between Data and More, a slicer on a PivotTable on More writes tabId="3" (More's sheetId) and reopens with the slicer.
  • pivot_slicer_on_a_coarser_date_level_is_skipped_with_a_warning (xlsx). A slicer cache naming "Years" on a Date grouped by years and months is skipped with one warning naming the coarser level, and the PivotTable keeps its grouping and saves.
  • Tested on real Excel-saved fleet reports. The report with a Date slicer now opens without the embedded-object warning. gridcraft-cli check gives the same calc results (53,467 of 53,467 formulas match), and the round trip no longer loses the slicer and slicerCache relationships. The two package differences left (the chart's chartStyle and chartColorStyle relationships) are the same on main and are not from this PR. A saved copy contains xl/slicers/slicer1.xml and xl/slicerCaches/slicerCache1.xml and reopens with the slicer. Toggling one date through slicer.toggle narrows the PivotTable to that date column, saves as one selected item in the cache plus the other items hidden in the PivotTable, and slicer.clear brings every date back. Rechecked after the review fixes: the 15 Date tiles (Sep 27 to Oct 11) are all selected on open, clicking Sep 28 leaves only that tile selected and narrows PivotTable2 to that column, and after save and reopen the slicer, its tiles and the filter are the same, with no warnings. gridcraft-cli check on all 11 reports gives output identical to before the fixes (0 round-trip differences). Rechecked after the second review fixes: the 15 Date tiles are all selected on open, clicking Sep 28 leaves only that tile selected, and after save and reopen only Sep 28 is selected; gridcraft-cli check output on the 11 fleet reports is identical to the previous commit (eld-unverified-logs: 53467/53467 matched, round trip equal).
  • Checked in Excel for Mac 16.114 on a synthetic workbook built in Excel: a 20-row table, a PivotTable (Region in rows, Sum of Amount) and a slicer on Product. The copy saved by this PR (9ad5f1c) opens with no repair prompt or other dialog. The slicer shows A, B and C, all selected, and clicking A filters the PivotTable to Product A (Grand Total 700 of 2100). The copy saved by main (6e984bb) opens without the slicer. In both copies the Region rows come out in cache order (N, S, E, W) instead of the order Excel saved (E, N, S, W), and <rowItems> isn't written. That's the same on main; PivotTables: refresh keeps sort by value, captions, item order and layout settings #722 keeps the saved item order.
  • On screen (web build, with this PR merged with XLSX: import grouped shapes and keep them as groups #685 and the other open fixes): the Date slicer draws on Summary with its caption and SlicerStyleDark1 tiles, all selected as saved. Clicking "Oct 03" selects only that tile, dims the others, and refreshes PivotTable2 to the Oct 03 column.
  • cargo xtask ci on the branch rebased onto current main: all 8 steps pass (fmt, clippy, test, assets, layers, wasm, parity, keytips). For the review fixes: cargo fmt --all --check, clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings and the tests of gridcraft-model, gridcraft-xlsx and gridcraft-engine pass, and gridcraft-ui-egui and gridcraft-mcp build. For the third review fixes: fmt, clippy -D warnings and the gridcraft-xlsx tests pass.

Review

Two adversarial review passes ran before this was pushed.

  • First pass, on c3ec216. It found three problems, all fixed in 1058f3e:
    • (P1) The slicer cache tabId was the model sheet index + 1, not the sheet's real sheetId. So a chart sheet before the PivotTable's sheet made the saved slicer point at the wrong sheet, and the slicer was dropped on reopen. Now tabId is the sheetId the writer gives that sheet. Test: a_slicer_cache_names_its_pivot_sheet_by_the_written_sheet_id.
    • (P2) A slicer on a date-grouping field (such as Years) was read with no warning and then lost on save. Now it's skipped on open, with a warning naming the coarser date level.
    • (P3) Frames of slicers that were already skipped got a second, wrong warning. It's gone.
  • Second pass, on 1058f3e. It confirmed all three fixes. It checked chart sheets before and between worksheets; sheets moved, renamed, deleted, inserted or copied before saving; hidden sheets; and a source whose sheetIds aren't 1..n. In every case tabId matched the written sheetId and the slicer came back on reopen. It also confirmed that a real Date source column keeps its slicer. Changes from this pass:
    • The coarser-level test now checks the warning text itself, not just "Years".
    • The fleet-report round-trip line above is corrected: it had said "0 diffs in every category".
  • Merge of main f1894c6 (9ad5f1c). Only docs/file-format-parity.md conflicted (its header line and changelog rows); both sides' rows are kept, newest first, and main's change is listed as "previously" in the header. An adversarial review of the merge against both parents found nothing; it also checked the code that merged without conflicts against main's new formula length and nesting limit (Formula parser: Excel's 8,192-character limit and postfix nesting (never crash) #1330) and the large-range clear recalculation (fix(edit): recalculate all changed cells after large-range clears #1128). cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on the merge.
  • Reviewed by @FredApps at 9ad5f1c (review, COMMENTED; partial source reading plus the hosted cargo xtask ci). He found no defect and left the unverified Excel repair prompt and the two save losses under Not done to a maintainer. He also noted the bundled pivot.moveField change. Reply.
  • Excel check (Excel for Mac 16.114, synthetic workbook, above): the new description text and the reply had an adversarial review; no findings.
  • Merge of main 23829d8 (34cdbf5). Only docs/file-format-parity.md conflicted (its header line and changelog rows): it keeps main's single header line with this PR's change listed first, and both sides' rows. An adversarial review of the merge against both parents found nothing. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on the merged head.
  • CodeRabbit on the merged head (comment): paint_slicers and slicer_click re-read the whole PivotTable source for each slicer on every repaint. Changed (3d5969c, da9604e): the tiles are cached in GridState by (sheet, slicer id), together with the Arc<Workbook> they were computed from, so any new workbook version rebuilds them. The adversarial review found that a first version keyed on the undo revision kept stale tiles after a manual recalculation (formulas.calculateNow changes values without an undo step), so the cache is keyed on the workbook itself. slicer_tile_cache_refreshes_after_source_edit covers an edit and an F9 recalculation; the F9 case fails with the revision key. A second review found nothing. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on da9604e.
  • CodeRabbit, second comment (comment): the cache held a strong Arc<Workbook>, so the next edit's Arc::make_mut copied the whole workbook. Changed (95b234f): it holds a Weak<Workbook> and compares it with Weak::ptr_eq. slicer_tile_cache_refreshes_after_source_edit also checks that caching leaves the strong count unchanged; that check fails on da9604e (3 against 2). An adversarial review found nothing. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on 95b234f.
  • CodeRabbit, outside the diff (in this review): the three .xlsx rows of docs/file-format-parity.md still said slicers weren't preserved. Changed (ccf527b, 0453820): they list PivotTable slicers (their caches, slicer parts and drawing frames) with their limits, and say table and OLAP slicers aren't preserved, as do docs/gaps.md and docs/target-app-parity.md. An adversarial review found that the first version didn't list PivotTable slicers as supported; fixed in 0453820, and a second pass found nothing. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on 0453820.
  • CodeRabbit, two more outside the diff (in this review). Changed in 7c17a59 (formatting in 673df7b), each with a test that fails on the previous commit:
    • pivot.moveField from Filters to Filters accepted a hidden slicer filter, which a move to Rows or Columns refuses. It now finds the field with the same predicate as remove_from_area.
    • A slicer whose pivotCacheId is absent or doesn't resolve was kept without its selection. It is now skipped on open with a warning, so it isn't saved.
An adversarial review found nothing. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on 673df7b.
  • CodeRabbit, outside the diff again (in this review): moving a row or column field that a slicer filters to Values, or removing it, deleted the slicer's selection. Changed (a7a6946, 7ccf0a4): when a slicer is connected to that PivotTable and field, the selection and date grouping are kept as a hidden filter. Otherwise the filter is dropped as before, so a manual axis filter is still cleared when the field leaves the layout, as in Excel. An adversarial review found that the first version kept manual filters too; 7ccf0a4 fixes that, and its test of the manual case fails on a7a6946. A second pass found nothing. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on 7ccf0a4.
  • Merge of main 06920de (402706a; head d6bef5a). Conflicts: crates/engine/src/cmd/pivot.rs and crates/xlsx/src/tests/pivot_tests.rs (tests from both sides), crates/ui-egui/src/chartview.rs (slicer cache and click API combined with main's show-objects hiding), crates/xlsx/src/pivot.rs (both sides' extension IDs), docs/file-format-parity.md, docs/gaps.md, docs/target-app-parity.md. Follow-up 0c95ade fixes an import. Adversarial review of the merge: duplicate dimension rows and out-of-order revision rows in the docs, fixed in d6bef5a; one ordering point rebutted, because it is main's own order. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on d6bef5a.

Merging with #685

This conflicts with #685 (grouped shapes) in crates/xlsx/src/drawing.rs, because both change how drawing objects are read and written. I've already resolved the combination in a local merge: the slicer check goes into #685's read_object graphicFrame branch, and the group-aware writer gets a slicer case (Obj::drawing_ref() returns None for slicers, which are never grouped). With both merged, plus #684, #686 and the x14 conditional-format and values-on-rows PRs, fmt and clippy are clean and the xlsx, engine and model tests pass. Whichever of the two lands second, I'll rebase it.

Not done

  • Inserting a slicer on a PivotTable from the UI or a command (insert.slicer still targets tables), and the Slicer Settings / Slicer contextual tab.
  • Table slicers (x15 table slicer caches) are still not written to XLSX.
  • Custom slicer styles are not kept: a style that isn't built in is saved as its built-in base (for example SlicerStyleDark1 2 becomes SlicerStyleDark1).
  • OLAP and data-model slicers, and timelines, are still skipped with a warning.
  • A slicer connected to PivotTables that can't share one pivot cache (different sources or calculated fields, or a date field grouped differently) is saved connected to the first of them only. Excel only connects a slicer to PivotTables on one cache, so files from Excel don't hit this.
  • A slicer on a coarser level of a multi-level date grouping (a Years slicer over Date by years and months) is skipped with a warning on open.
  • A hidden filter on a field grouped in a way GridCraft can't compute (numbers, or a custom grouping) is dropped with a warning.

…les and are saved

A slicer can now target a PivotTable field as well as a table column
(`SlicerSource::Pivot`). PivotTable slicers are read from the drawing frame
(the a14 choice of the markup-compatibility block, not its fallback), the
slicer part, the slicer cache (tabular items with their selected flags, sort
order, crossFilter, showMissing) and the sheet/workbook x14 ext lists, so they
no longer warn as a skipped embedded object. Real SmartArt and OLE objects
still warn.

The tiles are the pivot field's items; the selection is the PivotTables'
item filter on the field (their hidden items), so the two always agree.
Clicking a tile sets that filter on every connected PivotTable and refreshes
them; a field outside Rows and Columns gets a hidden filter with no report
filter cell, as in Excel.

Saving writes the slicer cache, slicer part, an sle:slicer graphicFrame in an
mc:AlternateContent block with a fallback shape, the workbook x14:slicerCaches
and sheet x14:slicerList ext entries, content types and relationships.

…and save every connection

A slicer on a date-grouped field lists the field's groups (Qtr1, Jan...) instead of
the raw dates, so its tiles match the PivotTable's filter and clicking one filters
the PivotTable; the slicer cache writes the groups in date order.

Ctrl-clicking the last selected tile leaves it selected, as in Excel, so a slicer
can no longer empty its PivotTables (a state that was lost on save).

The PivotTables a slicer connects are written with one shared pivot cache and all
listed in the slicer cache's pivotTables, so a reopened slicer still drives every
one of them. PivotTables that can't share a cache (different sources, or a date
field grouped differently) keep only the first connection, as before.
…he base level, and shared caches keep calculated fields apart

…warn once

A slicer cache's pivotTable tabId was written as the model sheet index plus one, but the
workbook numbers sheetIds through the chart sheets it keeps between worksheets. With a chart
sheet before the PivotTable's sheet the cache named the chart sheet, so the slicer was dropped
on reopen (and Excel could not connect it). The writer now passes each model sheet's written
sheetId to the slicer writer, which uses it for tabId.

A slicer cache whose sourceName is not a source column, such as a Years slicer on a Date grouped
by years and months (Excel keeps the coarser level in its own cache field), was read as a slicer
on a field that does not exist: no tiles, and dropped on save without a word. The model's slicer
filters a source column and lists its finest level, so it cannot represent that slicer
faithfully; it is now skipped on open with a warning naming the coarser level and its base.

A slicer skipped with a specific warning (missing cache, table or OLAP cache, missing
PivotTable) left its frame unclaimed, so a second, false "only PivotTable slicers are supported"
warning followed. The slicer part now claims its frame before any of those checks.

I read the pivot.rs command changes, the new engine tests, the model changes and the description with its Not done list, and scanned the diff for panicking calls outside tests (none). I did not read every line of the 580-line xlsx/slicer.rs reader and writer, so this is not a full approval review. I found no defect in what I read, and the test list in the description is specific and covers the cases it names.

I am not approving because the description lists unverified and lossy cases that need a maintainer decision:

  1. "I haven't confirmed in Excel that a saved slicer opens without a repair prompt." This PR makes every Excel file with a PivotTable slicer write slicer, slicerCache, defined-name, ext-list and content-type parts on save. If Excel rejects them, files that today merely lose the slicer would open with a repair prompt. Should someone open a saved copy of the fleet report in Excel before this lands?
  2. Known silent losses on save: custom slicer styles are saved as their built-in base, and a slicer connected to PivotTables that cannot share a cache is saved connected to the first one only. Is that acceptable for this step?

One more note: pivot.moveField now goes through the same path as pivot.addField when moving between Rows, Columns and Filters, so it keeps axis settings, date grouping and filter selection. That is a change to an existing command bundled with the slicer work, and is covered by move_field_keeps_the_date_grouping; a separate PR would have made it easier to review.

Validation: source reading (partial, as above) plus the hosted check "cargo xtask ci", which passed on this head (9ad5f1c). No local tests were run (builds are paused).

Thanks, @FredApps. Facts for the maintainer questions:

  1. Repair prompt. Still unverified. There's no Excel on the machine I work on, and the slicer parts (x14:slicer, x14:slicerCacheDefinition) are outside the ISO 29500 schemas I can validate against, so I haven't run a schema check either. Your framing is right: on main a file with a PivotTable slicer loses the slicer on save, and with this PR it gets slicer, slicerCache, defined-name, ext-list and content-type parts. The Not done list says so. If a maintainer opens a saved copy of the fleet report in Excel, that settles it.
  2. Known losses. Both are as listed under Not done. A custom slicer style is saved as its built-in base. A slicer connected to PivotTables that can't share a cache is saved connected to the first one only. Excel only connects a slicer to PivotTables on one cache, so a file saved by Excel reaches this only after edits in GridCraft give the connected PivotTables different sources, calculated fields or date grouping. On main, the whole slicer is dropped on save in both cases.
  3. pivot.moveField. Agreed, it's a change to an existing command. move_field_keeps_the_date_grouping covers it. I can split it into its own PR if a maintainer prefers.

An Excel check on the repair-prompt point left open in the description.

I used Excel for Mac 16.114 and a synthetic workbook built in Excel: a 20-row table, a PivotTable (Region in rows, Sum of Amount) and a slicer on Product.

  • Saved by this PR at 9ad5f1c: the file opens with no repair prompt or other dialog. The slicer shows A, B and C, all selected, and clicking A filters the PivotTable to Product A (Grand Total 700 of 2100).
  • Saved by main at 6e984bb: it opens without the slicer.
  • In both copies, the Region rows come out in cache order (N, S, E, W) instead of the order Excel saved (E, N, S, W). This is the same on main; PivotTables: refresh keeps sort by value, captions, item order and layout settings #722 keeps the saved item order.

I've moved this from Not done into the description. The other Not done items haven't changed.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Change: Feature

Suggested reviewers: echelon, vangel76

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 673df

Moving a slicer-filtered field to Values can silently clear the slicer selection and change the PivotTable totals. Fix this before merging. The parity documentation now appears consistent with the new slicer support.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 673df

Opening a crafted workbook could exhaust memory by expanding compact slicer references into very large selections. Existing file-size limits do not bound this additional memory use.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new XLSX slicer resolver expands attacker-controlled item references into independently allocated label strings before checking existing filters. Repeated indices can multiply a small cache label into gigabytes of temporary selection data; installing the selection can duplicate that allocation. Package-byte limits do not account for this derived memory, creating a process-level denial-of-service path when a crafted workbook is opened.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — An attacker needs control of workbook content and must induce its import. The supported impact is memory exhaustion in the importing process; broader service or cross-tenant impact depends on deployment isolation that was not supplied.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A resolvable slicer can repeat a selected item index 262,144 times while referencing one 4096-byte label. The selection collection alone then requests approximately 1 GiB of string contents from only a few megabytes of item XML. Including an unselected item retains that selection, and installing it on a target without a filter clones it again. These counts remain below the explicit item cap; existing-filter checks occur after the initial expansion.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new slicer path rejects external sheet and workbook relationships, requires a parsed PivotTable cache, and resolves targets within the imported workbook. Its added authority is mutation of workbook model state, rather than external resource access.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Unresolvable PivotTable caches cause slicers to be skipped with a warning. The regression test specifies that these skipped slicers and their extension entries are absent on re-save. This rejection control does not cover oversized derived selections from otherwise resolvable caches.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Deduplicate selected item indices before materializing labels and enforce an aggregate expanded-selection byte budget, including copies installed across connected PivotTables. Reject over-budget selections before allocating their strings.

docs/file-format-parity.md:25-27
📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Update the .xlsx rows that still list slicers as not preserved.

This change says PivotTable slicers are now read and written (Line 3, Line 95). Line 76 now limits the remaining work to table slicers. The .xlsx rows at Line 25–27 still say "Not preserved: slicers and slicer caches" and "slicer caches". As a result, the parity document contradicts itself. Change these rows to name only table slicers, and add PivotTable slicers to the supported list.

📝 Proposed wording change (Line 25)
-... **Not preserved:** slicers and slicer caches, timelines, data model, ...
+... PivotTable slicers (slicer caches, slicer parts, drawing frames). **Not preserved:** table slicers and their caches, timelines, data model, ...

Make the same change to "slicer caches" in the Line 26 and Line 27 rows.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff comment about docs/file-format-parity.md:25-27: fixed in ccf527b and 0453820. The three .xlsx rows now list PivotTable slicers (their caches, slicer parts and drawing frames) as supported, with the limits in the code, and say that table and OLAP slicers and their caches aren't preserved. docs/gaps.md and docs/target-app-parity.md make the same distinction. Timelines are still listed separately.

crates/engine/src/cmd/pivot.rs:998-1006
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject hidden slicer filters consistently in pivot.moveField.

A slicer selection on a field outside Rows and Columns creates a hidden PivotFilter. The Filters→Filters branch matches that filter and returns success, but moving the same field to Rows or Columns rejects it with `field` isn't in the filters area because remove_from_area excludes hidden filters. Match the existing removal predicate so hidden slicer filters are not accepted as movable Filters-area fields.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Skip slicers with an unresolved pivotCacheId.

When pivotCacheId is absent or unknown, slicer_non_source returns None. The resolver then reaches field with no mapping, skips selection import, and still appends the model Slicer. The connected PivotTable receives no slicer filter, and the retained slicer can be written back without its imported selection.

Reject the cache before the existing non-source-field check.

@coderabbitai On the two outside-diff comments in this review, both fixed in 7c17a59 (formatting in 673df7b):

  • pivot.moveField: the Filters → Filters branch now finds the field with the same predicate as remove_from_area (!f.hidden && !in_axes(...)), so a hidden slicer filter is refused there too. A new engine test covers it and fails on the previous commit.
  • slicer.rs: a slicer whose pivotCacheId is absent or doesn't resolve is skipped with a warning (new CachesIn::has_slicer_cache), and the resolved id is used for slicer_non_source and slicer_labels. A new XLSX test covers both an absent and an unknown id, checks that their slicer parts aren't written on save, and fails on the previous commit.

@neilcawse I verified both fixes in the current source and inspected the regression tests.

  • pivot.moveField now uses the same filter predicate as remove_from_area. The engine test checks that Filters → Filters rejects a hidden slicer filter and leaves it hidden.
  • slicer.rs now warns and skips slicers with an absent or unresolved pivotCacheId. Both field lookups use the validated ID. The XLSX test covers both cases and checks that saving omits the slicer parts, cache parts, and x14:slicerList references.

Both outside-diff findings are addressed. I did not run the tests in this inspection environment.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve slicer selections when moving an axis field to Values.

If a slicer filters a row or column field, remove_from_area deletes that field’s filter on this path. add_to_area then adds the value field without restoring the selection. The PivotTable shows unfiltered totals, and the slicer no longer shows the prior selection. Preserve the slicer filter and its date grouping when this move removes the axis field.

@coderabbitai The outside-diff finding is addressed in a7a6946, with the scope correction in 7ccf0a4.

  • Axis fields moved to Values, or removed from Rows/Columns, preserve a selected slicer filter and its date grouping as a hidden filter. The regression test covers both moving and removing the field.
  • 7ccf0a4 restricts that preservation to a slicer actually connected to the target PivotTable and field. Manual axis filters are now dropped when the field leaves the layout, matching Excel; explicit removal from the Filters area remains destructive. The added regression test covers this distinction.

@neilcawse Thanks for the scope clarification. I verified both commits and the current source in crates/engine/src/cmd/pivot.rs.

  • has_connected_slicer checks the worksheet, PivotTable name, and field before enabling preservation.
  • Moving an axis field to Values or removing it from Rows/Columns preserves its slicer selection and date grouping as a hidden filter.
  • Without a connected slicer, the axis filter is dropped.
  • Explicit removal from the Filters area still deletes the filter.

I inspected both regression tests. They cover slicer preservation for moving and removing the field, plus manual-filter removal when moving to Values. I did not run the tests.

The outside-diff finding is addressed.

Learning: In crates/engine/src/cmd/pivot.rs, removing a field from Rows/Columns or moving it to Values must preserve its selection and date grouping as a hidden filter only when a PivotTable slicer connects to that target worksheet, PivotTable, and field. A request that waited more than 60 s was answered with a timeout and left in
the queue, so `control::poll` ran it on the next UI pass and dropped the reply.
The client was told its command had failed while the command was applied: an

`ControlRequest` now carries who has it -- pending, taken by the app, or

request, so it may still finish; its outcome is unknown

The second case cannot be called a failure without guessing. This is the shape
DeckCraft settled on for the same bug (its storytold#719), so the two apps now agree.

Fix: storytold#1914

Approving at 2a50662. At 9ad5f1c I held back on the unverified Excel open and the silent losses. The Excel question is now answered: the author opened a saved copy in Excel for Mac 16.114 (synthetic workbook with a PivotTable and a Product slicer) with no repair prompt, the slicer showed A, B and C, and clicking A filtered the PivotTable (700 of 2100). The two lossy cases (custom slicer style saved as its base, one connected PivotTable when caches cannot be shared) are documented and are strictly better than main, which drops the whole slicer on save.

I read the commits since my last review:

  • The slicer tile cache in chartview.rs and grid.rs. It holds a Weak to the workbook Arc, so a new version is detected by pointer and the next edit does not copy the workbook. The test checks the strong count, a source edit and a manual recalculation.
  • pivot.moveField from Filters to Filters now uses the same predicate as remove_from_area, so a hidden slicer filter is refused, with a test.
  • Slicers whose pivotCacheId is absent or unresolved are skipped with a warning and not written on save (xlsx/pivot.rs, xlsx/slicer.rs), with a test for both cases.
  • Removing or moving an axis field keeps the slicer selection and date grouping as a hidden filter, but only when a slicer is connected to that PivotTable and field. Manual axis filters are dropped, as in Excel. Both cases have tests.

I found no defect. The gate and SonarCloud are green at this head. Not verified: I skimmed the 580-line slicer.rs reader and writer again rather than reading every line, and I did not check the Excel result beyond the author's description. I read the code and the CI results; I did not run the app.

Re-review at SHA 5fcc45c (my last APPROVE was at 2a50662).

The PR-only delta is an adaptation to main: wb.active_sheet became the method wb.active_sheet() in cmd/pivot.rs (code and tests), and in slicer.rs the slicer.toggle lookup of the slicer, its tiles and the pivot connection is wrapped in a block (let (new_selected, pivot) = { ... }) and re-indented. The statements inside are the same ones, in the same order, including the "value is not one of the slicer's items" error.

Checked: that the delta lines in slicer.rs are the old statements moved and re-indented, with the same arguments and the same error; all other delta lines are the active_sheet() rename.
Not verified: I did not run the build or tests locally; the hosted gate decides that.

Re-review at SHA 554a5df (my last APPROVE was at 5fcc45c).

What it does: unchanged from my last review. Since then the PR was rebased onto upstream module splits, so its code now lives in different files.

Checked: compared the PR-only added/removed lines at the old and new heads with the file name ignored; the sorted line sets are identical, so the delta is a pure relocation with no logic change. Gate is green at this head.

Not verified: I did not run the tests locally.

Correction to my re-approval at SHA 554a5df (this is a comment, not a change of verdict).

My approval text said the PR-only line sets at the old and new heads were identical. That check was wrong (a faulty file-name filter), so it did not show that. Re-checked properly: about 600 of roughly 2,500 PR-only lines differ between 5fcc45c and 554a5df. I have since read that residual: it is pivot/slicer code and tests moved between files with visibility changes (pub(super)/pub(crate)), re-exports and use lines, which is the rebase adapting the PR to upstream's module split. I found no logic change in it, so I stand by the approval, but I want the record to show what the check really was.

Not verified: I did not run the tests locally; the gate was green at the time of the approval.

Review notes on head 554a5df (PivotTable slicers: read, filter, save).

What I checked

  • Read the diff (d719, about 3,600 lines) against the title and description, plus the existing review threads so I don't repeat them.
  • Scanned the non-test added lines for unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo!/unsafe and for unchecked indexing or input-sized allocation. I found none in non-test code. The one indexing spot, data[k] in slicer_tiles (crates/engine/src/pivot/items.rs), is preceded by a resize to k + 1, and the interning loop stops at 100,000 items. The read side uses .get()/labels.get(k as usize).
  • No new asset files, so no ATTRIBUTION.md rows are needed. No new cross-layer dependencies: xlsx, engine, model and ui-egui only use the crates below them.
  • CI at this head: gate / gate (ubuntu-24.04) SUCCESS, sonarcloud / Plan coverage shards SUCCESS, SonarCloud Scan SUCCESS. The instrumented test archive and the shard jobs show SKIPPED, and CodeRabbit shows SKIPPED.
  • Tests are present at the engine, xlsx round-trip and ui-egui level, and the description lists what each covers.

What matched

  • The diff does what the description says: SlicerSource::{Table, Pivot}, the new xlsx/src/slicer.rs reader and writer, the engine slicer commands writing hidden PivotFilters, tile rendering, and the docs updates.
  • The author reports an Excel for Mac 16.114 check (no repair prompt, clicking a tile filters the PivotTable). I have not repeated it.

Findings

  • None that are blocking from what I read. I did not read every line of crates/xlsx/src/slicer.rs and pivot/write.rs (shared pivot cache across connected PivotTables), so those are covered only by the tests and the author's Excel check.
  • Note for whoever merges: the PR was rebased onto upstream module splits at 554a5df, and the earlier approvals were at older heads. The latest reviewer comment says that delta is relocation only; I didn't independently verify this.

What I could not check

  • I didn't build or run tests (not allowed on this machine); I relied on the gate result above.
  • No Excel run from me for this PR: slicers need the file-open/UI path, which I can't drive through COM on a synthetic workbook within the time box. I didn't open a GridCraft-saved file in Windows Excel.
