Summary

Save Changes accepts unmodified Y for Save, N for Don't Save, and Esc for Cancel through the existing actions. Y/N arm on a fresh press after the dialog's opening frame and answer on release; repeats, modifiers, stale releases and keys held while opening or advancing questions cannot answer another workbook. Esc cancels immediately and wins the input batch. Focus loss, font-loading returns and covering macro questions, messages or update cards clear armed/pending answers. A pass skipped for fonts cancels the gesture even when the window stays focused.

Fixes #2572. Native repeat identity is fixed separately in winit #18 and egui #7. This app retains the fifteen existing storytold source overrides: winit 583850047a54d1532fed223edcd8e82dd939b6e9 and fourteen egui-family packages at 499ca4a62e8653cecb5912a6221616252e087689. Removing them restores the proven focus/repeat failures. Package versions remain main's; no dependency source changes in this merge.

Evidence

Current head: 2965e7e722a53a0134aa14bcf60c60bba677823e, corrected tree 95b46901, on equations-main 6f52cc50. A four-file follow-up to aaa7328d fixes CodeRabbit's opening-frame answer finding: one private first-presentation frame field, both constructor resets, a later-frame guard on Y/N arming, real UI regressions and parity documentation. Existing answer actions, Escape, buttons, focus/cover/font clearing and fifteen storytold input pins stay intact. The preceding equations union preserves main's public focus flag and equation constructor/show branches, every incoming path and both doc histories. Its inherited math/RaTeX graph used the existing offline cache. No authored dependency, native source, asset, credit or workflow changes.

  • Opening-frame finding reproduced and fixed: CodeRabbit r4444433729 fails all eight actual-app cases on aaa7328d: Backstage Close via pointer or window-close request, Y/N, held press or quick press/release in the opening batch. N discarded dirty work; Y saved unexpectedly. A dialog-local frame records first presentation; only a later fresh Y/N press can arm, and opening-frame input is consumed. This also excludes repeat layout passes of that frame. Both constructors reset the private field. The permanent regression now preserves document/workbook identity, dirty state, revision/undo and on-disk bytes in all eight cases, then proves fresh Y/N works. A separate control proves opening-frame Escape still cancels immediately. Original red and green logs are retained.
  • Fresh corrected-tree scoped checks: 16 passed. File-menu 35, native windows 26, macro editor 36, updater 5, shared code editor 17, equation editor 7, dialog-focus/command-palette cases 10, macros UI 13 and hyperlink 7; strict UI all-target Clippy, fmt, assets, layers, WASM, keytips and parity. Tree and lock stayed unchanged. The preserved-workbook render was inspected. The first keytips check compared LF-generated output with CRLF checkout bytes; after proving normalized bytes exactly equal the existing index, those bytes were restored and the check passed. The failed attempt remains in the ledger; no generated content was authored.
  • Preceding equations integration: three independent R11 reviews completed: Opus 5.5 effort=medium, Sol 6.1 reasoningEffort=medium/serviceTier=default, Grok 4.7 reasoning_effort=medium, on immutable tree 75e6be34 against main 6f52cc50. All reports and completed threads were read and independently adjudicated without actionable introduced findings. Review traced ordinary equation-dialog construction and focus, private answer state, code-editor held-event expiry, window close/quit/parking, fonts and existing covers. Shortcut metadata stays display-only. Reviewer early pending-check snapshots remain historical; final test/render results come from the completed parent ledger. Source reviews are distinct from runtime proof and human approval. Those reports cover earlier tree 75e6be34/head aaa7328d, before this four-file correction. They missed the opening-batch reproduction. Root verified and fixed this small finding directly; no new delegated review of the correction is claimed.
  • Native fixture integration reproduced and corrected: the first automatic merge assigned main's separate root event queue after the existing viewport queue, dropping ROOT keyboard events. It failed two existing regaining-focus delivery assertions (24/26 native tests passed). The corrected merge removes the duplicate queue and feeds the incoming root-key helper through the existing per-viewport queue. All 26 tests now pass, including both old held-key groups and main's new macro-editor quit/Escape tests. Initial tree/logs are retained; no production repeat workaround or test weakening.
  • CodeRabbit's font-gate follow-up reproduced and fixed: all four armed/pending × Y/N cases failed on published 8b54bcb8, including unintended saves and lost dirty work. The helper now clears both fields on every font-gated UI return, regardless of focus, and affects only Save Changes. The permanent actual-app UI regression passes all four plus fresh-answer controls, asserting workbook identity, dirty state, revision/undo and on-disk preservation. It drives the existing public font-ready gate with prepared fonts; no live asynchronous scan is claimed. The rebind condition shares the same return body by source trace.
  • Covering macro/message/update tests still protect first and dismissal passes, mixed mouse/key input and fresh answers afterward. Existing updater workers use the source seam without network. Fresh returned Save Changes and French-interface renders from this fix were inspected.
  • Literal Y/N/Esc follows the issue's requested bindings across UI languages. Tests use real language changes and save/reopen the Y result, preserve work on Esc, and discard only the requested workbook on N. French Save Changes labels currently remain English; locale-specific mnemonics and complete dialog localization are not claimed or inferred from button initials.
  • The unchanged companions underwent the original combined R9 reviews at the same exact three requested medium settings, with no findings. Their public HTTPS commit-fetch proofs succeeded without local rewrites. Existing bridge/policy regressions cover native repeat forwarding, core held-state inference, browser repeat forwarding, ordered X11 focus keymaps and native child/XEmbed ancestry. Prior Windows message probes traversed the actual pinned winit/egui-winit/egui bridge. This merge changes neither companion source nor pin.
  • Required local cargo xtask ci was attempted and is not green: workspace Clippy stops on main's unchanged Windows CLI only_used_in_recursion at apps/gridcraft-cli/src/check.rs:281, identical blob 5fc37b14 in main and candidate. Later aggregate stages are skipped; scoped gates above ran separately. No unrelated lint workaround or workflow/settings edits.
  • Corrected-head hosted Linux/X11 CI and CodeRabbit review passed. The Ubuntu job for 2965e7e7 checked out merge cd50be7 into main 6f52cc50; its tree exactly matches corrected 95b46901. All ten gates passed and the lockfile stayed unchanged. The actual job passed the new eight-case opening-frame regression and immediate-Escape control, plus regained-focus, macro-editor quit, font-gate, update-card dismissal and fresh-save cases. It compiled exact winit 58385004 and egui-winit/eframe 499ca4a6 with X11 enabled. This establishes compilation and offscreen regression results, not a live X11/XIM/XEmbed session. CodeRabbit covers this exact head with no actionable findings, accepted the correction and resolved its thread; no unresolved inline threads remain and the PR is conflict-free. Five checks succeeded, including Nix evaluation (not a build); two skipped Sonar instrumented jobs are not executed coverage. Egui README: install on Gentoo from the ::snakebyte overlay #7 retains its separate human-review draft gate.
  • Prior mixed-input/source-ownership findings, FredApps dependency/locale questions and CodeRabbit's font-gate follow-up remain fixed or answered with reasons. The historical dependency-URL review targets 7989e531; all fifteen existing sources already use storytold and were left unchanged. The font-gate red/green reply remains applicable. The new opening-frame correction is addressed above; CodeRabbit acknowledged the correction and resolved its inline thread. The resumed full review and corrected-head Ubuntu validation now pass. Source/agent/bot reviews are not human approval. No bot or human approval is inferred. Egui README: install on Gentoo from the ::snakebyte overlay #7 retains its separate documented human-review draft gate.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way; app and companion changes are separately reviewable and reversible.

Blast Radius: Save Changes keyboard ownership, quit sequencing and pinned input adapters. Existing buttons perform saving/discarding; dialog-local state gates the shortcuts. Runtime tests prove workbook isolation, Cancel precedence, save failure/picker cancellation, missing releases, focus/cover loss, update dismissal, native-window activation and fresh input. The new main sends viewport focus commands without arming answer keys; per-window dialog parking remains intact. No live macOS Dock quit, X11/XIM/XEmbed session, browser runtime, physical keyboard, complete French dialog localization or counterpart-app comparison is claimed. No installations, feature-specific persisted format, credit, workflow or settings changes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Y to save, N to discard, and Escape to cancel in the Save Changes prompt. Save and discard actions occur when the key is released; Escape cancels immediately.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Prevented held or repeated keys from answering later prompts or affecting another workbook.
    • Improved handling of focus changes and modified key presses. Canceled or failed saves leave the workbook open.
    • Prevented Save Changes shortcuts from affecting other dialogs or entering text in cells.
    • Ensured macro questions, messages, and update prompts take precedence over Save Changes answers, and fresh input works after they close.
    • Prevented update-result interactions from triggering pending answers.
    • Canceled pending answers when focus is lost or the interface cannot accept input.

Walkthrough

The Save Changes dialog now accepts unmodified Y/N gestures and Escape. It stages Y/N answers until key release and clears pending answers when focus is lost or another prompt covers the dialog. Tests cover save outcomes, multiple workbooks, update UI, and native viewport interactions. Dependency overrides and UI parity documentation also changed.

The dialog tracks armed Y/N keys and pending answers. It waits for held answer keys to be released and clears pending answers on focus loss or when a covering prompt appears. Escape applies Cancel immediately. The update UI records whether its prompt or result is shown. The font-loading early return cancels Save Changes state. Dependency overrides now use different egui-family and winit revisions.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 2965e

The previously identified risk of an opening key press saving or discarding a workbook is addressed. No actionable merge-blocking issue remains after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 7824f

The inspected changes strengthen protection against stale keyboard input saving or discarding another workbook. No new externally reachable operation or additional update authority was identified. Risk remains low rather than minimal because native input behavior depends on updated external libraries that were not fully verified in this review.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant sensitive outcomes are saving or forcibly closing a workbook within the running application. Quit sequencing can visit multiple dirty workbooks, making isolation between their input gestures important. The inspected ownership change does not add a remote entrypoint or additional installation authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Keyboard events reach destructive workbook actions only through the active Save Changes handler. Non-repeat, unmodified Y/N presses arm answers; matching releases select them; focus and held-key checks gate dispatch. Covering dialogs invalidate pending state rather than transferring their input authority to the workbook prompt.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Native-window regression assertions cover mixed mouse/key answers, focus loss with or without a release, repeated input, and stray releases after quit advances to another workbook. They require the next workbook to remain dirty and untouched until fresh input. These assertions support failure containment but do not independently verify operating-system event delivery.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#2572] requires Y to save and continue only after success, N to discard and continue, and Esc to cancel. The changed dialog code uses the existing actions, arms only fresh unmodified Y/N presses, answers on release, consumes repeats and stale input, and gives Esc immediate precedence. Focus loss, font-gated returns, and covering prompts clear pending answers. The reported tests cover save failure, save-location cancellation, opening-frame input, held keys, modified keys, workbook isolation, and English and French UI. These changes satisfy the active coding requirements. Hosted validation remains pending, but the supplied implementation and test evidence support this result.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The production changes support [#2572]. Dialog state, input gating, focus and covering-prompt handling, and font-gate clearing implement the requested Save Changes behavior. The added tests and parity documentation verify and document that behavior. The native test-harness changes and the winit/egui revision pins support reliable focus, repeat, and release-event handling required by the implementation. No unrelated production feature or unrelated workflow, asset, format, or settings change is identified.

Carry dialog-local armed/pending answers, whole-batch focus cancellation and the pre-font-gate safeguard into the extracted owners. Keep reviewed dependency pins and main's newer graph; place the shared focus helper before unit tests.

Validation: Fresh native22 and file-menu29 pass after the helper-order correction; Save Changes render inspected. Companions remain draft pending hosted Linux/X11 compilation.
Scoped engine/UI Clippy, formatting, assets, layers, WASM, keytips, parity and workspace doctests pass. Three independent requested medium reviews are adjudicated.

Aggregate CI was run; the remaining Windows CLI recursion lint and Unix-only engine test are byte-identical to current main. Hosted CI remains required. No installs, dependency upgrades or contributor-credit edits.

The retained mixed-input concern describes the original d5865703 implementation. It is addressed in the corrective stack, now ported to current main at 7989e531: mouse/alternate-key answers remain in the originating prompt until Y/N are up, Escape wins within the batch, and focus/font-gate cancellation clears pending gestures. Native/browser adapters preserve repeat provenance rather than treating a held key as a fresh confirmation.

Fresh app verification passed 22 native-window and 29 file-menu cases, including mixed-input and focus regressions; strict UI Clippy also passed after the unchanged focus helper was moved before the test module. The render was inspected.

The description leads with the remaining gap: the modified Linux/X11 backend has not compiled on verified hosted CI, and no live X11/XEmbed/XIM or browser-runtime coverage is claimed. This PR and both companions remain draft. The egui preview-comment permission error supplies no compiler evidence.

On the docstring-coverage advisory: the confirmation logic documents gesture consumption and the whole-batch focus rule where they matter. Private dialog helpers and descriptive regression tests retain the existing module style. I am keeping those without percentage-only docstrings and leaving coverage settings unchanged. The source-ownership finding is fixed separately in 98367b8315ad7a810bf2a703cf31aeea0e2e3840, with exact revisions preserved and actual fetch/graph/runtime checks recorded in the PR description.

✅ Action performed

Reviews resumed. No new commits to review.

Merge release main while preserving its formula/function/print fixes, workspace version and packaging. Retain reviewed feature behavior and source pins. All three requested exact medium reviews adjudicated; small accepted findings independently reproduced, fixed and verified directly.

Validation: current production integration and collateral library/UI tests, inspected render, strict scoped Clippy, formatting, WASM and repository gates pass. Required local aggregate CI stops only on the source-identical Windows CLI recursion lint; new-head hosted CI remains pending. See the PR verification for precise counts and limits.
Merge main981fad14 with its manual CheckResultDialog, craft-libs revision and documentation cleanup. Retain both updater Runtime states and sample ownership before startup/result cards draw or dismiss. Reproduce three lost-work paths and cover Checking/UpToDate/Failed, first-pass input, queued release/Escape, armed/pending state and fresh input after dismissal.

Five updater tests cover28 cases; native22/menu31/editor22/macros13/hyperlink7, current four renders and scoped gates pass. Three exact requested medium R5reviews independently report only the new fixture clock lint; use the existing monotonic helper and rerun updater/strictUIClippy/fmt/mandatoryCI. Local aggregate retains only the source-identical Windows CLI baseline lint. Reviewed egui/winit pins unchanged; new-head hosted CI pending.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)

I read the first hunk: the root manifest's [patch.crates-io] block moves the egui family from fork commit 6d518fc7 to a newer revision (every line changes, the comment says to keep the complete family and the native event bridge on reviewed fork commits), and per the title the Save Changes dialog accepts Y and N answers (#2572). Two separate changes are mixed: a dependency bump of the egui fork for all the crates in the family, and a small keyboard feature. Please split them: the bump needs its own review (what changed in the fork between the two commits, and whether the other apps use the same revision), and the dialog change should not depend on it unless it needs a new fork feature (say so). The Y/N keys must follow the dialog's language (Ja/Nej, Oui/Non, Sí/No use other letters): take the letters from the translated button labels (their mnemonics), not fixed Y and N. I did not read the dialog code. Add tests for the keys in English and in one other language, and Escape for Cancel. Nothing was run.

I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.

Status: waiting_author.

Exercise the existing Y save, N discard and Escape cancel paths with active English and French UI frames. Save reads back the actual XLSX; cancel and discard retain their existing workbook ownership checks. Capture optional renders and document that these are the explicit issue bindings, not inferred label mnemonics.

Production dialog logic and the separately reviewed egui/winit companion source pins are unchanged. The issue requests literal Y/N/Escape; localized mnemonic assignment is not established by current labels or metadata.

31 file-menu and 22 native-window tests, strict changed-target UI Clippy, formatting and parity pass. Required aggregate CI retains only main Windows CLI recursion-only lint; exact new-head hosted CI remains pending.

@FredApps — response to ReviewerA:

The fork implementations are already split into winit #18 and egui #7. This dialog feature needs those fixes: on the old pin, a posted native repeat was observed as repeat=true at winit but false at the egui bridge/app, and four focus regressions failed. The dialog cannot distinguish that fresh-looking event from a deliberate N answer.

The exact 6d518fc7…499ca4a6 diff contains eight files: native repeat forwarding, OR-ing it with egui's existing inference, browser event.repeat() forwarding, tests/docs and the companion winit workspace pin. Winit supplies ordered X11 focus-key provenance. Both unchanged companion SHAs already completed the required Opus/Sol/Grok medium reviews. The app pins the whole egui family consistently to avoid mixed types; package versions did not change.

This is not a suite-wide migration: the public main manifests for WordCraft, PDFCraft and DesignCraft still used 6d518fc7 / a517b384 when checked. No sibling app was modified.

For language handling, #2572 explicitly defines Y = Save, N = Don't Save, Esc = Cancel. The button labels are Save/Don't Save, not Yes/No; deriving their letters would not even produce the requested English bindings. There is no localized mnemonic metadata to consume, so I retained the specified keys rather than guessing replacements. The current Save Changes labels also remain English in a French interface; this PR does not claim localized dialog/mnemonic parity.

Pushed eba56256 with the existing save and cancel/discard tests expanded to active English and French UI frames. Y persists the edited XLSX, N closes only the requested workbook, and Esc keeps it open. Both renders were inspected. These test UI language and logical key events, not a native French keyboard layout.

31 file-menu and 22 native-window tests passed, plus strict changed-target UI Clippy, formatting and parity. The required local aggregate attempt retains main's Windows CLI recursion-only lint. Hosted Ubuntu CI now passes on exact eba56256: run 41281665197. I checked the actual log: both expanded language tests, all ten gates and the unchanged-lockfile check pass; it compiles the exact companion SHAs in the Linux/X11 graph. The seven-check rollup has five successes and two skipped instrumented coverage jobs. Skipped coverage is not executed coverage, and Nix evaluation is not a Nix build. Production logic and dependency pins are unchanged by this follow-up.

Keep main's quit-window activation, per-window ribbon tab, File-page Escape,
protected-cell editing and import changes. Preserve both parity-document
histories and behavior notes. Shortcut and updater ownership source and
the fifteen existing storytold dependency pins remain unchanged.

Three fresh exact-medium integration reviews found no actionable defects.
Updater5/native23/file-menu32/macro-editor22/macros13/hyperlink7 and
protected UI1/library3 pass; strict UI Clippy, fmt, assets, layers, WASM,
keytips and parity pass on frozen tree93494d2a with unchanged lock.

Required local CI still stops at main's unchanged Windows CLI recursion
lint at check.rs281. New-head hosted Linux/X11 CI remains required.
Merge mainf5030432 with Function Library, Recently Used, Solver model/options, view-mode undo and release0.15.0. Preserve all incoming changes and both parity histories. Shortcut/update/native feature blobs and fifteen reviewed storytold input pins stay unchanged.

Verification: updater5/native23/file-menu32, Function Library10/Solver8, macro editor22/macros13/hyperlink7/protection tests, strict UI Clippy and applicable gates pass. Fresh renders inspected and three required medium reviews adjudicated clear. Local aggregate CI hits only unchanged Windows CLI lint; new-head hosted Linux/X11 proof remains required.

Clear Save Changes state during every font-gated pass.

The background font scan can finish after the Save Changes dialog opens. The font-gated return clears gesture state only when focus is lost. With focus retained, a later pass can apply a stale Save or Don’t Save answer without a fresh gesture.

Clear both fields on every font-gated return.

Update the font-gated return in the app update flow to clear Save Changes
gesture state on every pass, regardless of focus. Replace the focus-dependent
cancellation call with unconditional cancellation, and update Dialog’s
cancellation method to clear both armed and pending state whenever the dialog is
named “saveChanges.”

Clear armed and pending answers on every font-gated UI return, including when the window retains focus. Keep cancellation local to Save Changes. Add a real four-case UI regression for armed/pending Y/N and fresh-answer recovery, with dirty workbook, revision, undo and on-disk preservation assertions. Update parity history. Addresses CodeRabbit review5729949495.

The four cases fail on published8b54bcb8 and pass after the narrow fix. Fresh file-menu33, native23, updater5, Function Library10, Solver8, macro/editor and protection cases pass; strict UI Clippy and applicable gates pass. Required localCI retains only the unchanged main Windows CLI lint. No dependency/credit/workflow changes; new-head hosted Linux CI remains required.

Addressed the font-gate follow-up in 58c3850d. I independently reproduced all four focused cases on 8b54bcb8: armed and pending Y/N could survive a skipped UI pass, then save or discard without a fresh gesture. The existing dialog helper now clears both fields on every font-gated return, regardless of focus, and still touches only Save Changes. The permanent real-app UI regression now passes all four cases and fresh-answer controls, preserving the dirty workbook, revision/undo and saved file. File-menu 33, native 23 and all seventeen scoped checks pass; local aggregate CI retains only main's Windows CLI lint. The fixture exercises the existing font-ready gate without starting a host scan; the rebind condition shares that same return body. New-head hosted checks are pending; the unchanged dependency pins remain separately published.

Comment thread crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/show.rs Resolved
Record the first frame presenting Save Changes in its own Dialog. Only later unmodified Y/N presses can arm an answer; consume opening gestures and retain immediate Escape, buttons, key-release deferral and focus/cover/font clearing. A frame counter also excludes layout repeat passes. Both constructors reset the private field.

Reproduce CodeRabbit r4444433729 on aaa7328 with eight actual UI cases: Backstage pointer Close or viewport close, Y/N, held or quick taps. All eight lose dirty work or save unexpectedly before the fix. The permanent regression now preserves document/workbook/revision/undo/disk state and verifies fresh answers; opening-frame Escape remains immediate. All16 scoped checks pass, including file-menu35/native26/macro36/updater5/code-editor17/equation7/focus10, strict UI Clippy and WASM. Required local aggregate CI fails only at unchanged main Windows CLI check.rs281 and skips later stages. Corrected-head hosted validation remains required; no pin/dependency/workflow/asset/credit changes.
