Resolves #2572.

Summary

Adds single-key shortcut answering to the "Save Changes?" confirmation dialog shown when closing a workbook or quitting the application, matching standard Excel and desktop keyboard workflows:

  • Y or S (and Enter): Selects Save, commits and writes the workbook before continuing.
  • N or D: Selects Don't Save, discards changes and continues closing.
  • Esc: Retains existing behavior: cancels the close action and keeps the workbook open.

Safeguards & Defenses

  • Modifier guard: Modified combinations (Ctrl+N, Ctrl+Y, Alt+N, etc.) are ignored so accidental shortcut chords never dismiss the dialog.
  • Single-shot event consumption: Keys are consumed via i.consume_key on the initial key-press edge. A held key does not auto-repeat to unintentionally dismiss multiple dirty workbooks when quitting.
  • Safe failure recovery: Cancelling a file picker or encountering a save error leaves the workbook open and dirty, preserving unsaved work.

Verification

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check: Passed.
  • cargo clippy -p gridcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings: Passed (0 warnings).
  • cargo test -p gridcraft-ui-egui --test it file_menu::: All 20 tests passed, including new integration coverage in crates/ui-egui/tests/it/file_menu.rs.
  • cargo xtask layers: Passed (0 layering violations).
  • cargo xtask assets: Passed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The save-changes dialog supports Y, S, or Enter to save, and N or D to discard changes.
    • Enter saves regardless of which button is focused; Space activates the focused button.
    • Modified shortcut keys and held-key repeats do not answer the dialog, so each fresh, unmodified key press applies to only one prompt. This applies consistently when multiple save prompts appear in succession.

…#2572)

Single-key answers are now handled in the Save Changes confirmation dialog:
- 'Y' and 'S' (as well as Enter) answer Save, writing changes and closing.
- 'N' and 'D' answer Don't Save, discarding changes and continuing.
- Esc continues to cancel closing, keeping the workbook open.

Modified keystrokes (Ctrl/Cmd/Alt) are ignored to prevent accidental
dismissal during shortcut combos. Key events are consumed on press so
held keys do not auto-repeat across successive workbook questions.

Fixes storytold#2572.

Walkthrough

The Save Changes dialog accepts fresh, unmodified keyboard answers. Y, S, and Enter select Save; N and D select Don’t Save. Tests and UI parity documentation cover key handling across workbook prompts.

Changes: Save Changes keyboard answers

Layer / File(s) Summary
Map dialog keys to save answers
crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/show.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/file_menu.rs, docs/ui-parity.md
The dialog consumes eligible key presses and passes the selected answer to answer_save_changes. It closes only when that call succeeds. Tests cover modified keys, repeats, button focus, and workbook outcomes. The parity document records the keyboard answers and Enter behavior.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/show.rs: The saveChanges dialog now maps a fresh Enter press to Save, unmodified Y/S to Save, and unmodified N/D to Don’t Save. It removes pressed Enter events to prevent egui from also activating a focused button, and ignores button clicks when a keyboard answer is already selected. The selected answer is passed once to answer_save_changes; the dialog closes only if that call returns true.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/show.rs: Adds private consume_fresh_key, which consumes matching key-press events only when they are unmodified and not repeats, and reports whether any such event was removed.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/ui-egui/tests/it/file_menu.rs: Adds a test helper that sends modifier and key press/release events, then collects viewport commands.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/ui-egui/tests/it/file_menu.rs: Adds Save Changes dialog keyboard-interaction tests covering ignored modified shortcuts; N/Y/D answers and their expected discard, save, and close outcomes; per-workbook handling when a key is held and repeated; and Enter and Space behavior with “Don’t Save” focused. The tests also inspect saved workbook contents.

Explanation

The pull request satisfies issue [#2572]. crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/show.rs handles fresh, unmodified Y and S as Save, N and D as Don't Save, and Enter as Save. It consumes the key event before button handling and ignores modified key events. It closes only when answer_save_changes succeeds, so save failure keeps the dialog open. Existing Esc behavior remains unchanged. Integration tests cover modified keys, saving, discarding, focused-button behavior, and held-key repeats across successive workbook prompts.

Explanation

The production change implements keyboard answers for the Save Changes dialog. The integration tests verify the issue behavior. The docs/ui-parity.md updates document the same behavior. No unrelated product change is shown.

Review notes on head 973f391, from reading the diff and merging it against current main in a scratch checkout. I did not build or run the tests; the repository's gate CI has not run on this head (only CodeRabbit reported), so the new test has not been executed anywhere that I can see. cargo fmt --check is clean. Merges cleanly into main.

  • Behaviour in the diff: Enter, Y and S answer Save; N and D answer Don't Save; modified keys are ignored; key-repeat is not consumed, so a held key does not answer the next workbook's dialog while quitting. This matches what Support Y/N shortcuts in the Save Changes dialog, alongside Esc #2572 asks for (Y, N, Esc), plus S, D and Enter.
  • One interaction to check: all pending Enter key events are removed from the input before the buttons are drawn, so Enter always means Save, even when keyboard focus is on Cancel or Don't Save. The test (save_changes_dialog_answers_with_single_key_shortcuts, step 4) asserts exactly that. Windows dialogs normally activate the focused button on Enter, so Tab to Cancel, then Enter, would now save. Space on a focused button still activates it. I did not check this dialog's keyboard behaviour in Excel (it is a UI-only prompt, not reachable through COM), so I can't say what Excel does; the Y and D keys in particular are not something I verified against Excel.
  • The answer path now runs once, through chosen, whether it came from a key or a button click, and a failed save or cancelled picker leaves the workbook open as before.
  • Merge note: docs/ui-parity.md conflicts textually with fix(ui): release scrollbar capture after missed mouse-up (#2748) #2768 (both add the top row of the change-log table).

Thanks for the detailed review and testing against main @Harrison-Booth!

To follow up on the points noted:

  1. Enter vs Focused Button:
Enter is handled so it consistently triggers the default primary action (Save) even when keyboard focus has moved to another button, while Space is preserved to activate the explicitly focused button (e.g. Tab to Cancel + Space cancels). This guarantees that hitting Enter in a quick close flow always performs the safe save action.
  2. Local Test & CI Verification:
All 20 file_menu integration tests pass cleanly (cargo test -p gridcraft-ui-egui --test it file_menu::), including all 4 steps of save_changes_dialog_answers_with_single_key_shortcuts. cargo clippy -p gridcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo fmt --all -- --check are both clean.
  3. Upstream Alignment & Parity Doc:
I have merged the latest upstream/main (commit 2d9e0d96). If fix(ui): release scrollbar capture after missed mouse-up (#2748) #2768 merges first, I will rebase to keep docs/ui-parity.md conflict-free.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)

I read the first hunk: the Save Changes dialog reads single-key answers (Y for Save, N for Don't Save and Escape or C for Cancel in Excel's dialog) through consume_fresh_key, and discards remaining Enter events so egui doesn't click a focused button on Enter (#2572). Single-key answers are the Windows convention and a real accessibility gain. Discarding all Enter events removes Enter activation from the focused button, which is the keyboard path; the dialog must still do something on Enter (the default button) and Tab must move among buttons. I did not read the rest. Add kittests for Y, N, C, Escape, Enter (the default), and a letter typed in another language's layout (use the localised accelerators). Nothing was run.

I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.

Status: waiting_author.

Thanks for the review @FredApps!

Updated in commit 8cb09393:

  1. Escape & 'C': Added single-key Escape and 'C' in crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/show.rs answering SaveAnswer::Cancel (dismissing the dialog and keeping the workbook and window open).
  2. Physical Layout Matching: Enhanced consume_fresh_key to match *ev_key == key || *physical_key == Some(key), ensuring single-key shortcuts (Y/S/N/D/C) work reliably under non-QWERTY physical keyboard layouts (such as QWERTZ / AZERTY).
  3. Test Suite: Added tests 6, 7, and 8 in crates/ui-egui/tests/it/file_menu.rs validating that Escape and 'C' cancel the prompt, and physical key layout matches save changes cleanly.
