Italian: native-speaker review, and every key the other catalogs translate - #2460
Italian: native-speaker review, and every key the other catalogs translate
docs/localization-parity.md listed Italian as awaiting a native-speaker review. This is that review, by Carmine Zacchia (@carminezac), plus the strings Italian was missing.
What changes
crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/it.rs:
74 translations corrected;
the 189 keys other catalogs translate and Italian lacked are added: cell styles, conditional-formatting rules and icon sets, chart types, borders and more.
cargo xtask i18n-report now lists no Italian gaps (1,149 entries).
docs/localization-parity.md: Italian at 1,149 strings, native review yes, with a revision-history entry.
How the words were chosen
Every string was reviewed by a native speaker.
Labels that Excel also shows were checked black-box in Excel 365 with the Italian interface, by opening the menus, dialogs and tooltips. Nothing was copied from Microsoft documentation, the Microsoft Terminology Collection, Office files or LibreOffice.

"report" is used throughout for PivotTable reports, e.g. «Filtro report» and «Layout report».
Where GridCraft deliberately differs from Excel
CSV. In Italian Excel both CSV types write ; with decimal commas, observed on 2026-10-24:
«CSV UTF-8 (delimitato da virgole)» writes UTF-8 with BOM;
«CSV (delimitato dal separatore di elenco)» writes ANSI.
A "comma-delimited" file that holds semicolons is Excel's quirk, not something to copy. GridCraft's export writes commas, so both Italian labels now say «delimitato da virgole». They wrongly said "separatore di elenco" before. A follow-up PR will add an explicit semicolon-delimited export.
Shared keys that need a context in code (not changed here)
Comma is both the cell style («Migliaia» in Excel) and the Text to Columns delimiter («Virgola»). It keeps «Virgola».
Left / Right are used for alignment («A sinistra»), borders («Sinistro») and fill direction. They keep «Sinistra» / «Destra».
A context|label key in the code would let each place say the right word.
Related: #682, #1473. Formula names in Italian were checked the same way and posted on #714 and #1894; a separate interface/formula language setting is proposed in #2458.
Updated Italian interface wording and added translations for account and workbook actions, shortcuts, formatting, charts, printing, and drag-to-fill guidance.
Conditional-formatting menus and chart subtype labels now display in the selected language.
Italian coverage increased to 1,169 strings, with complete key coverage relative to other catalogs and native-speaker review completed.
Documentation
Updated the localization coverage report with Italian review details, terminology notes, revised coverage counts, and a 2–4 hour estimate to reach full parity.

The Italian catalog updates existing translations and adds interface mappings. Conditional-formatting and chart subtype menus now translate their labels through the UI language. The localization parity document records the revised Italian string count, coverage, review status, estimate, and revision history.
Changes: Italian localization
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Revise existing Italian labels crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/it.rs
Existing Italian translations change across interface commands and labels, including formatting, navigation, charts, printing, and CSV exports.
Add catalog entries and update parity record crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/it.rs, docs/localization-parity.md
The catalog adds Italian mappings for report layout and other interface strings. The parity document reports 1,169 strings, complete key coverage, completed native-speaker review, and a revised review history.
The localization code is mergeable, but the parity history should be corrected so its published review statistics match the final catalog.

What I checked: the open PR list of this repository today (titles, changed files, created and updated dates). I did not run or compare the catalogs themselves, so the overlap is by scope, not by line. it.rs is already on main, so open PRs that add the catalog from scratch will conflict with it.
Could the authors agree between you on one PR to carry Italian (the others could then close, or be cut down to what the first one lacks)? Whichever you pick is fine; this isn't a ranking. The maintainers decide what merges.
For reference: the shared translation catalogs live in https://github.com/storytold/craft-i18n. GridCraft's own catalogs haven't moved there yet, so for now interface translations still go in this repository (crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/).
Hi everyone! I’m not sure how my version compares to the others, but since
it is already about two weeks old, I am closing it. Feel free to reach out
if you need anything else!

This PR builds on the it.rs already on main, so it doesn't conflict with it. cargo xtask i18n-report shows it: 0 missing. The labels Excel also shows were checked black-box against Excel 365 with the Italian interface, and nothing was copied from Microsoft's localization files or documentation.
Formula names are a separate scope that this PR doesn't touch. #1894 (@Alftakeaway) looks like the place for the Italian formula locale. I posted the Italian names of all 514 functions there, as observed in Excel. I've also proposed a separate "formula language" setting in #2458, so you can use the Italian interface with English formulas.
If anyone spots a translation they'd phrase better, feel free to comment here and I'll fold it in.
Thanks for the pointer, and for checking the catalogs of all nine PRs against each other — that table is the clearest picture of the Italian work anyone has posted.
Confirming the split from my side: #1894 is the formula half only. It adds FormulaLocale::It in gridcraft-formula (464 aliases — SOMMA, SE, CERCA.VERT, RIF.COLONNA, ASS, DEV.Q, LIBERA, SE.NON.DISP., …), the ; list separator and , decimal separator, and 12 descriptions plus 17 argument names in crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/it_functions.rs. It does not touch it.rs, so it cannot conflict with this PR.
The names are the ones you posted, applied as given rather than re-translated — including the ~50 functions Italian Excel keeps in English (MAX, MIN, INT, MAP, MAKEARRAY, XOR, CONCAT, LAMBDA, LET, …) and the two names with a trailing dot (SE.NON.DISP., INTERVALLO.DISTRIB.BINOM.N.). Rebased on main today as 9a386207.
On #2458: the default you describe — same as interface — is exactly what #1894 does today. Language::It maps to FormulaLocale::It and every other interface language keeps English formulas, so the setting can be layered on top without reworking the tables: the mapping becomes one of the choices instead of the only one. Happy to reshape #1894 to whatever form you and the maintainers prefer for that.
Two smaller things, for whoever ends up coordinating:
"Attiva calcolo iterativo", "Numero massimo:" and "Scarto consentito:"
(observed in Excel 365 with the Italian interface, File › Opzioni ›
Formule), and the two validation messages that use them; `it` has no
missing strings again (1,169 entries).

Translate chart and conditional-formatting labels before display.
The chart subtype popup and the conditional-formatting submenus pass English labels directly to ui.button. Italian users see English text for Treemap, Sunburst, and the conditional-formatting items, even though the Italian catalog defines them. menu_items and the number-format dropdown already call lang.tr(...). Apply the same call at these renderers. Keep the English identifiers in the act and open_dialog payloads.

Update the Italian revision entry to match the final catalog.
At the reviewed head, i18n/it.rs contains 1,169 entries, with 193 additions and 75 changed values. The revision entry records 1,149 entries, 189 additions, and 74 corrections. The surrounding parity table also states 1,169 strings, so the page is internally inconsistent.
