GridCraft's host bridge (?host=parent) can open a workbook, hand over saved files and report dirty state, but a host page cannot drive the open workbook. WordCraft's bridge (#2919) and DeckCraft's (#983) have cmd and response messages for that. This adds the same to GridCraft, so a host can, for example, write an answer into a cell of the workbook the user has open.

What it does

  • gridcraft:cmd (from the parent): { id, params?, requestId? } runs the engine command id (cell.set, home.bold, ...) like a ribbon button. params is a JSON string (absent or null means {}), as in WordCraft's bridge; requestId is an optional string.
  • gridcraft:response (to the parent): { id, requestId?, ok, value? } or { id, requestId?, ok: false, error }, once per gridcraft:cmd. The requestId comes back, so a host can match replies to commands.
  • Malformed params, params that is not a string, params over 1 MiB and a missing id are refused with an error response; nothing runs.
  • Only the parent window on the page's own origin is heard, as before.
  • The commands waiting for the next frame are bounded: at most 256, and at most 8 MiB of params text together. A command beyond that is answered at once with ok:false.

The parsing and the response shape are a pure module (host_cmd.rs) with native unit tests, like prefs.rs; the wasm-only part just posts and drains a queue once per frame.

Testing

  • cargo test -p gridcraft-web passes (10 tests); cargo fmt --all -- --check is clean; cargo clippy -p gridcraft-web --all-targets -- -D warnings is clean.
  • trunk build succeeds. In headless Chrome with a same-origin harness page I checked that after ready, cell.set with =1+1 on B2 answers ok:true with {cell:"B2", value:"2"} and the same requestId, the dirty state turns true, and an unknown command, missing parameters, invalid JSON in params, a non-string params and a missing id each answer ok:false with an error.

Not covered: I did not run the full cargo xtask ci. cargo clippy --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -D warnings fails on a dead-code warning in gridcraft-ui-egui (Modified::Unknown), which this change does not touch. Open, save and ?author= are unchanged. A save acknowledgement like WordCraft's save-ack is not part of this.

Prepared with AI assistance (Claude Sonnet 5.5; the commit carries the Co-Authored-By trailer) and reviewed by me before submitting.

Part of one change across the Craft suite. The same host bridge protocol (<app>:ready, open, save, dirty, cmd, response) in every app, so a host page can drive all of them the same way:

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Parent integrations can send commands to GridCraft and receive responses containing results or errors.
    • Commands can include parameters and an optional request ID, which is returned with the response. Missing or null parameters default to an empty object.
    • Valid commands run against the app’s current state.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Invalid commands and requests that exceed limits are rejected with errors.
    • Parameter text is limited to 1 MiB per command, with a maximum of 256 queued commands and 8 MiB of combined queued parameter text.

…craft:response)

A same-origin parent page can now drive the open workbook, the way
WordCraft's and DeckCraft's host bridges do: gridcraft:cmd {id, params?,
requestId?} runs the engine command like a ribbon button and
gridcraft:response {id, requestId?, ok, value?|error} answers every one.
params is a JSON string, as in WordCraft's bridge; malformed or oversized
params and a missing id are refused with an error response, not run.

📝 Walkthrough

The web host bridge accepts parent commands, validates and queues them, runs them through the app, and posts success or error responses to the parent.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to ce177

Commands sent after a successful workbook open now run against the opened workbook. No outstanding issue identified here prevents merging after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 1aaed

Existing same-origin and parent-window restrictions remain intact. However, independently queued workbook opens and commands can cause a command to modify a different workbook than its sender intended, including after an unsuccessful open. This creates a workbook-integrity and failure-containment risk.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Open messages and command messages enter separate queues. If open A, a mutation intended for A, and open B arrive before one frame, both opens are processed before the mutation, which can modify B and return success. An unsuccessful or password-blocked open also does not prevent subsequent commands from running against the previous active workbook or a blank fallback. The new execution path therefore lacks target-ownership and failed-open containment; the available evidence does not establish a parent-side sequencing contract that excludes these cases.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The admitted principal is the same-origin parent, which can now invoke UI and engine commands over the app session, including workbook activation and lifecycle operations. The demonstrated containment issue concerns workbooks in that session; the inspected path does not establish cross-origin, cross-tenant, or server-side privilege escalation.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No origin-check bypass was established. The supported failure path instead requires accepted parent messages: an intervening open or failed open changes the effective target before a queued mutation runs. This can compromise workbook integrity without requiring a malicious parent.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Origin and source identity are checked before command fields are read. Admission rejects invalid requests and limits pending command count to 256. Engine commands then pass through the existing command-enabled check rather than bypassing engine dispatch.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The 4 MiB parameter limit applies per command, not across the queue. A full queue can therefore retain roughly 1 GiB of string payload data plus allocation overhead before a frame drains it. This is a resource-budget limitation, not an established new attacker privilege: the sender is already a same-origin parent, and workbook-open admission was already unbounded.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define workbook-target semantics explicitly. A unified ordered operation stream or workbook-generation binding with successful-open acknowledgement could prevent commands from silently falling through to another document after interleaving or open failure.
  • proposed — Consider an aggregate queued-byte budget alongside the command-count limit to keep memory consumption predictable when rendering is throttled.

Process queued workbook opens before commands.

gridcraft:open places the workbook in the inbox, but WebShell::logic executes queued commands before self.app.logic(ctx) processes that inbox. A command sent after an open can therefore target the previous workbook or fail when no workbook is active.

…re the commands

CodeRabbit review on storytold#2360: the queue of commands waiting for the next frame was
unbounded, so it holds at most 256 and answers the rest with an error. And the commands now
run after app.logic, so a workbook the parent just opened is the one a following command
runs on.

Both findings are addressed in 1aaed2a.

  • Unbounded queue. The commands waiting for the next frame are capped at 256 (host_cmd::MAX_PENDING_COMMANDS). Beyond that, receive_command answers the new command at once with ok:false and "too many commands are waiting; try again", echoing its id and requestId. The decision is a pure function (has_room) with a unit test. In headless Chrome, 400 commands sent in a loop all got a response: 395 ok, 5 refused.
  • Opens before commands. WebShell::logic now runs app.logic(ctx) first, which applies the workbooks the inbox holds, and then runs the queued commands, so a command sent after a gridcraft:open runs on the opened workbook. I did not test an open followed by a command end to end; the order follows from the code.

cargo test -p gridcraft-web (11 tests), clippy -D warnings and the wasm check pass.

CodeRabbit review on storytold#2360: 256 commands of up to 4 MiB each could queue a gigabyte of text.
The per-command limit is now 1 MiB and the queue holds at most 8 MiB of params text.

The new finding (a count limit alone still allows a large amount of queued text) is addressed in ce1771c: a command's params are limited to 1 MiB (was 4 MiB), and the commands waiting for the next frame hold at most 8 MiB of params text together, in addition to the limit of 256 commands. has_room takes the queued count, the queued bytes and the incoming bytes, with unit tests for both limits. The PR description is updated. cargo test -p gridcraft-web (12 tests), clippy -D warnings and the wasm check pass.

…bounded queue

Aligns gridcraft:response with the family protocol the WordCraft (storytold#2919) and
DeckCraft (storytold#983) bridges use — the same alignment chief-nerd proposes for the
GridCraft bridge in storytold#2360:

- gridcraft:response is { id, requestId?, ok, value? } or
{ id, requestId?, ok: false, error }, so multi-command hosts can match replies.
- deckcraft:cmd layout matched on receive: absen/null params mean {};
a params that is not a string, params over 1 MiB, a missing id, and commands
beyond the queue bounds (256 commands / 8 MiB of params text) are answered
at once with ok:false instead of being dropped or run unvalidated.

@chief-nerd Your #2360 and my #1854 now overlap: #1854 already adds gridcraft:cmd/gridcraft:response on top of its behavioral work (open/save/dirty/docClosed, drain queued opens before commands, refuse malformed params, the host-close commit gate, save-receipt binding) — and as of 17da1968 it responds in exactly the format you describe here: { id, requestId?, ok, value? } / { id, requestId?, ok: false, error }, with malformed/oversized params, a missing id and an over-queue command answered at once with ok:false, and the same 256/8 MiB bounds.

To spare the maintainers the conflict: if your host_cmd.rs module lands first, I can rebase #1854 onto it and drop my inline parts; if #1854 lands first, the module can replace them with the behavior kept on top. Whichever order the maintainers prefer works for me.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)

I read the head of the diff: the web host bridge runs engine commands. A parent page can send gridcraft:cmd with { id, params?, requestId? } to run any engine command in the open workbook, and the app answers with gridcraft:response. A message bridge that executes commands is a security boundary: the receiving code must check event.origin against an allowed list (or the parent that embedded the page), not accept messages from any window; commands should be limited to an allow-list or marked as safe for the host (a page that can run file.save or open links can do harm), and the params string must be size-limited and parsed defensively. The module comment does not say who may send. gridcraft#1854 raised the same concern for another bridge, and the suite's host-bridge copies should share one hardened implementation. I did not see the origin check. I have not run it, and no exact-head CI result exists for this head. Nothing was run.

I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
