Draw: Ink to Shape mode, ported from WordCraft's recogniser - #1776
Ink to Shape is a before-drawing mode, and the recognition is now a port of WordCraft's geometric recogniser (storytold/wordcraft, crates/engine/src/cmd/ink_shape.rs, from PRs #408 and #1520; same MIT/Apache-2.0 licences) instead of a bespoke classifier.
What changed
Ported recogniser (crates/engine/src/cmd/ink_shape.rs): WordCraft's recognise() is unchanged — line kept to the chord between its ends, arrow from a shaft plus two barbs drawn in one stroke, ellipse by the normalised-radius RMS of the inscribed ellipse, polygon from Ramer–Douglas–Peucker corners (3–8), upright quads as rectangles, and square/circle snapping. Only the MAX_POINTS import and the module doc were adapted; WordCraft's own test suite came with it (9 tests).
Mode (Session::ink_to_shape, draw.inkToShape {on}): while on, draw.stroke converts each completed stroke. {id} and {} still convert one stroke for the control channel, CLI and MCP; one undo step per conversion. The UI highlights the button while the mode is on.
GridCraft mapping (cmd/draw.rs): the recogniser's InkShape is mapped onto GridCraft's shape model — line, arrow, rectangle/square, ellipse/circle, triangle/right triangle, and 4-corner polygons via the corner tests (diamond/parallelogram/trapezoid/rectangle); 5- and 6-corner polygons as the pentagon/hexagon presets. 7–8-corner polygons stay ink because GridCraft has no freeform preset (WordCraft stores them as freeform shapes).
Preset kinds / XLSX / renderers: carried over from the previous revision of this PR — Diamond, Parallelogram, Trapezoid, Pentagon, Hexagon, RightTriangle, BlockArrow, ArrowDouble, with DrawingML presets (diamond, parallelogram, trapezoid, pentagon, hexagon, rtTriangle, rightArrow, leftRightArrow), screen/PDF rendering, and round-trip tests.
cargo test -p gridcraft-engine --lib — 298 passed (the ported recogniser suite plus the mode/conversion tests)
cargo test -p gridcraft-engine --test ink_roundtrip — 4 passed (reopened ink still converts; anchors unchanged)
cargo test -p gridcraft-xlsx --lib — 174 passed (preset round-trips)
cargo test -p gridcraft-ui-egui — full crate suite
cargo xtask wasm — ok
Offscreen render with --cmd 'draw.inkToShape={"on":true}' shows the button active.
Attribution
Ported from storytold/wordcraft under the same MIT/Apache-2.0 licences; the module header records the source. No Office code, assets or models are involved.
Summary by CodeRabbit

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 6fc54
The remaining documentation formatting issue was already present before this change. The PR is mergeable after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 6fc54
The inspected drawing and replay paths preserve object identity and existing script restrictions. No introduced security issue was established. Recorded replay now changes a session-wide drawing setting that can remain changed after a later failure, and the wider rendering and file-format changes were not fully assessed.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — In the inspected paths, caller-controlled stroke data affects drawing objects in the active workbook sheet and the conversion mode affects session-level drawing behavior. The added conversion and recorded prefix do not introduce a file, network, credential, or cross-document selection capability.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Stored-script execution retains its existing trust requirement. Before executing steps, it rejects file, link, window-switching, and path-bearing commands. Execution enters ScriptSandbox and removes URL-opening requests. These controls are unchanged by the inspected PR comparison.

Explanation
[#1775] The before-drawing mode, explicit conversion, preset model, XLSX mappings, rendering, and tests are present. The linked issue also requires double-headed arrows and block arrows. recognise() only returns InkShape::Arrow with head_at_end: true and head_at_start: false, so convert_at() cannot produce ShapeKind::ArrowDouble. polygon_kind() maps only 3–6 corners and returns None for 7–8 corners, and no other conversion path maps a stroke to ShapeKind::BlockArrow.

Add recognition and conversion tests for double-headed arrows. Return both arrow-head flags for strokes with heads at both ends, and map them to ShapeKind::ArrowDouble. Preserve the right-triangle orientation during conversion.
recognise returns polygon corners without normalizing their orientation. triangle_kind accepts a right triangle from side lengths alone, but convert_at discards the right-angle corner and leaves both flips unset. For a stroke with the right angle at the bottom-right, both preset renderers therefore draw the right angle at the bottom-left.
Set the preset flips from the recognised right-angle corner. Preserve the current behavior for other polygon kinds.

Fixed in 214674f (outside-diff finding: right triangle orientation).
convert_at now turns the recognised right-angle corner into the RightTriangle preset's mirror flags, so the converted shape keeps the orientation the stroke was drawn in:
right_triangle_flips (next to triangle_kind) finds the corner opposite the hypotenuse (the longest side) and compares it with the triangle's bounding-box centre.
flip_h is set when that corner is on the right half, flip_v when it is on the top half. GridCraft's preset has its right angle at the box's bottom-left, so mirroring moves it to bottom-right / top-left / top-right as drawn.
The anchor for RightTriangle is taken from the recognised polygon bounds (box_anchor), so the flips and the box agree. All other polygon kinds are unchanged (still no flips).
Regression test ink_to_shape_keeps_a_right_triangles_right_angle_corner draws a right triangle with its right angle at the bottom-right (expects flip_h, not flip_v) and another with it at the top-left (expects flip_v, not flip_h).
Verification on 214674f: cargo test -p gridcraft-engine --lib 413 passed, --test ink_roundtrip 4 passed, cargo clippy -p gridcraft-engine -p gridcraft-xlsx -p gridcraft-model -p gridcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings clean, cargo fmt --all -- --check clean. Scale the right-angle tolerance to the shorter box dimension.
With automatic conversion enabled, the stroke [[0,5],[100,0],[0,10],[0,5]] is classified as a RightTriangle. Its right-angle vertex is (0,5), the middle of the box's short side. The current check accepts it because 5 <= 0.15 * 100. Conversion then applies no flips and renders the preset right angle at the bounds corner (0,10), moving it away from the ink.
Use the shorter dimension for this corner tolerance so a vertex in the middle of a short side remains ink.

instead of using the longer dimension. A long, thin box can no longer accept a right-angle vertex halfway along its short side: [[0,5],[100,0],[0,10],[0,5]] has its right angle 5 points in on a 10-point side, so the old tolerance (0.15 × 100 = 15) accepted it and misplaced the preset; the new tolerance (0.15 × 10 = 1.5) rejects it.
Regression test ink_to_shape_leaves_a_rotated_right_triangle_as_ink now covers both that stroke and the earlier bottom-edge-midpoint triangle; both stay ShapeKind::Ink. The corner cases (bottom-right flip_h, top-left flip_v) are unchanged and still pass.

Reject invalid explicit id values instead of selecting the last stroke.
u32_param returns None for invalid JSON IDs. ink_to_shape then treats the ID as omitted and converts the last Ink stroke. With two Ink strokes, an explicit invalid id can convert the wrong stroke instead of rejecting the request.

Update `ink_to_shape` to distinguish an omitted `id` from an explicitly provided

Cover the vertical mirror flag in the XLSX round trip.
This test round-trips only flip_h: true, flip_v: false. The reader and writer handle flip_v separately, so a regression that drops or swaps flip_v during save or load would still pass. The engine tests check vertical flips, but they do not reach XLSX serialization. This is a coverage gap. No production failure is shown.
Extending this test is the smallest fix. It needs no production change. The loop covers the vertical-only and both-flags cases, and it keeps the existing horizontal case.

Reject strokes above the recogniser bound instead of classifying their first 4,000 points.
recognise keeps only the first 4,000 raw input points and classifies that prefix. The filters for finite values and repeated points run after that cut. Points past the prefix cannot affect the result. A stroke can still have more than 4,000 usable points and be stored in full. With Ink to Shape on, convert_at then converts the stored stroke using only the prefix. The drawn remainder is not reflected in the preset. A stroke over the bound should stay ink, as the convert path already does for strokes that are not shapes.
Reachable triggers:
draw.stroke accepts up to 20,000 finite points.
The UI appends every pointer sample to the ink buffer without a limit and sends the buffer when the drag ends.

Strokes with 4,000 usable points or fewer behave as before. The loop still stops at the bound, so the work stays bounded. The draw.stroke storage is unchanged. Update the doc comment on MAX_POINTS so it says that longer strokes are not recognised.

Invert both flips for head-end arrows.
When an external line has headEnd plus both flipH and flipV, read_shape preserves both flips but converts the line to a model Arrow. The renderer always places the arrowhead at the mirrored second endpoint, so the imported arrow points opposite to the source. The exporter then persists that wrong direction as tailEnd.
The merge base ignored both flips. For this double-flipped case, that happened to keep the arrow at the source head endpoint. Invert both flags when importing a head-only arrow.

Validate triangle geometry before selecting the Triangle preset.
triangle_kind maps every non-right three-corner polygon to the upright Triangle preset. This distorts reachable scalene strokes. The preset also represents upright isosceles and equilateral triangles, so rejecting every non-right triangle would remove supported conversions. Accept only corners that match the preset within the recognizer's wobble tolerance; return None for irregular triangles.

ink_shape.rs:70-80 — strokes above the 4,000-point bound were classified from a prefix: fixed in bf67d6e. recognise filters first and returns None past MAX_POINTS, and the MAX_POINTS doc says longer strokes are not recognised. drawing.rs:235-236 — a head-only line (a:headEnd, no non-nonea:tailEnd) pointed opposite the source: fixed in 4f28e46. read_shape detects the head-only case and inverts both imported flips, so the model arrowhead (the mirrored second endpoint) lands on the source head; the export writes a tailEnd with those same flips, so the arrow stays put. Test head_end_arrows_import_with_inverted_flips covers the four flip combinations, a tail head, both heads and type="none", plus the save round trip.
draw.rs:184-205 — non-right polygon presets kept the raw stroke bounds: fixed in 7546f70. Every recognised polygon, not only RightTriangle, now anchors to found.bounds() through box_anchor (no flips for the kinds that need none). Test ink_to_shape_anchors_polygon_presets_to_the_recognised_corners: a hexagon whose top edge bows out 4 points, dropped by the simplifier, so the corners box is 100 × 60 while the stroke is 100 × 64.

draw.rs:255-269 — every non-right triangle became the centred-apex Triangle preset: fixed in 7546f70. triangle_kind now validates the geometry and returns the flips: a right angle still goes to RightTriangle; a triangle whose apex is centred on one horizontal side with its base corners at the box corners (within the 0.15 × shorter-side wobble the right triangle already uses) converts, mirrored down when the apex is on the bottom edge; a scalene or otherwise rotated triangle stays ink instead of being drawn with its apex moved. polygon_kind now carries the flips for every polygon kind. Test ink_to_shape_keeps_only_triangles_the_preset_can_draw (apex up, apex down with flip_v, scalene stays ink).

extra.rs:981-988 — recorded scripts dropped the initial off state of Draw ▸ Ink to Shape: fixed in 6fc54c2. record now always prepends draw.inkToShape with the mode captured when recording started, {"on": s.recording_ink_to_shape}, instead of only when it was on, so a replay restores either state and never converts a stroke that was recorded as ink. New test a_script_recorded_with_ink_to_shape_off_replays_its_strokes_as_ink records a rectangle stroke with the mode off, turns the mode on and replays: the replayed stroke stays ink. recorded_strokes_replay_the_ink_to_shape_mode_they_were_drawn_with still covers the on case. The script now always opens with one step, so the two tests that assert a recorded step count (recording_keeps_its_steps_when_the_journal_is_trimmed, record_actions_is_unchanged_by_the_buffer) count it, and docs/architecture.md says the mode is saved on or off.
