Dependencies and merge order

Independent feature; proposed landing position 8, after the baseline validation fixes. Land before #1922 in the proposed sequence. Their integration must retain cancellation in the shared host job constructor, add cancel: None to the export-preflight job initializer, and preserve both export test groups. We will carry the saved, tested resolutions into #1922 after this lands.

Full nine-PR index, merge instructions, audited heads and validation evidence. The first five positions are independent, not a serial dependency chain. Combined CI evidence is not a claim of nine standalone full-suite passes.

Review status for e1a2625: all current actionable findings are addressed. CodeRabbit verified that failed scrub mixing clears queued audio and confirmed its old merge-risk text is stale and must not remain a blocker (correction). The combined CI and strict Clippy checks passed; CodeRabbit's separate Clippy execution remains timed out.

Time Remap changes picture source time, but the shared audio mixer previously used only stretch-adjusted layer time. A 15-second composition remapping source seconds 26–39 therefore played/exported audio from seconds 0–15.

Evaluate Time Remap per output audio sample, including holds, reverse source motion, jumps and nested compositions. Linear resampling changes pitch; pitch-preserving time stretching is outside this change.

Keep sample evaluation practical and bounded: exact scalar arithmetic expressions use a prepared evaluator; unsupported syntax uses the production JavaScript runtime. Source pages are bounded and reused. Shared work, instruction-yield and native time allowances include nested mixes and audio parameter expressions. Playback, scrubbing and export propagate cancellation/resource failures instead of accepting partial audio. Exports split large audio batches without changing sample alignment. The public mixer now returns Result and its callers are updated.

Oversized ordinary time-stretch reads are paged with interpolation lookahead, without weakening cumulative work/cancellation controls. Property-read pass exhaustion also marks the active audio control failed instead of silently falling back. Regression tests cover both reproduced review findings.

Scope

Validation

  • Exact reduced source: 116 focused mixer/expression/export tests passed in the latest follow-up, zero failures; one existing export diagnostic ignored. Coverage includes mixer/effects, real expression runtime, export formats, low-frame-rate exports, sample alignment, cancellation and UI scrubbing.
  • Opt-in workload matrix passed. Eight layers over 180 seconds at 48 kHz processed in 19.2 seconds; expected excessive-work rejection also passed.
  • Native Windows checks passed: fresh launch, same-session reopen, replay, arithmetic expression, looping, natural endpoint, cancellation, work-limit reporting/recovery and second-process playback. Audio remained active past 12 seconds. Evidence uses playback telemetry/meters and an inspected screenshot, not audio loopback capture. One restart attempt hit a busy test control port; retry on a fresh port passed.
  • Exact reduced cargo xtask ci is blocked by the preexisting Windows Stills dead-code test-helper warning (test(engine): guard the Unix-only importer fixture #1889). For integration validation only, the existing companion fixes from test(engine): guard the Unix-only importer fixture #1889/test(text): isolate metric-font fallback tests from host fonts #1890/fix(script): interrupt blocked socket writes on close #1891/test(render): make automatic backend checks independent of timing #1915/test(ui): serialize Windows viewer screenshot harnesses #1916 were temporarily applied: full cargo xtask ci passed, 3680 tests passed, zero failed, 33 ignored; fmt, strict release Clippy, audits and the 32-crate WASM check passed. Those companion files were restored byte-for-byte before committing; they are not in this PR. Merge the companion PRs separately to make the Windows baseline gate green.
  • Native smoke on functional-fix commit dc0e3b3 repeated fresh playback, cancellation, work-limit reporting and recovery successfully. The subsequent two-line wording correction was validated by full CI, including the existing UI error assertion.
  • Build settings: CARGO_PROFILE_RELEASE_LTO=false and CARGO_PROFILE_RELEASE_CODEGEN_UNITS=16. WASM retains the existing unrelated dead-code warning.

Limitations
General JavaScript expressions can still be too expensive for real-time playback. Native deadlines are cooperative and cannot preempt blocking media providers/native callbacks; WebAssembly uses instruction/work allowances. Exceptionally costly legitimate projects can hit limits. Scrubbing uses a tighter allowance and reports failure rather than queueing partial audio.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Audio playback and export now support time remapping, stretching, and scalar expressions.
    • Added cancellation and shared work limits for audio processing.
    • Export jobs propagate cancellation and audio-processing errors.
    • Audio playback accounts for device latency before natural completion.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved accuracy across sample rates, nested compositions, reverse playback, and large time jumps.
    • Playback, scrubbing, and exports now report audio failures and recover correctly.
    • Added safeguards for oversized requests and excessive preroll.

📝 Walkthrough

Audio mixing now supports sample-level time remapping, linear interpolation, shared cancellation, work limits, and fallible results. Errors propagate through expression evaluation, export, playback, scrubbing, and audio-to-keys conversion.

Changes: Audio Mixing and Cancellation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Controlled audio expression evaluation
crates/render/src/eval.rs, crates/expr/..., crates/expr/tests/audio_remap.rs
Adds bounded audio-expression parsing, evaluation hooks, runtime interruption, yield limits, and recovery tests.
Remapped audio within shared limits
crates/render/src/audio.rs, crates/render/src/lib.rs, crates/render/src/tests_audio_fx.rs
The mixer returns AudioError, shares limits across nested operations, and uses linear interpolation with bounded source pages.
Mixer cancellation and errors through export
crates/engine/..., crates/host/src/lib.rs, crates/export/...
Render jobs share cancellation tokens with exporters. Export paths propagate mixer errors and test cancellation, work limits, and output formats.
Mixing failures in playback and scrubbing
crates/ui-egui/src/audio.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, apps/effectcraft/src/audio_out.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/ui_audio_scrub.rs

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e1a26

A failed scrub can briefly play audio from the previous scrub. This is a bounded playback issue to address or explicitly accept before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to e1a26

The change adds resource controls and prevents failed audio blocks from being accepted as successful output. No new privilege or external-access capability was identified in the reviewed paths. Platform-specific interruption and concurrent device behavior remain only partially verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A project author can influence audio work through expression text, extreme stretch values, remap times, and nested compositions. The inspected path reaches processing and output performed by the application when preview, scrub, or export is requested. The demonstrated exposure concerns local processing resources and authorized audio/output operations; broader service or tenant exposure was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The scalar fast path accepts bounded arithmetic syntax and declines unsupported input to the production expression runtime. Production audio evaluation installs shared interruption state and restores the previous state on exit. Property-read exhaustion marks the active audio control failed, preventing resource failure from being silently accepted through keyframed fallback.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Failure containment applies to the current unpublished block, not to audio already delivered to the device. Scrub cleanup removes samples still queued but cannot retract samples pulled concurrently. Mixing before replacing the queued snippet and asynchronous native consumption both predate the PR; the regression test establishes queue cleanup, not retroactive device-output suppression.

Drive the scrub through the egui_kittest harness.

scrub_reports_excessive_audio_work calls app.scrub_audio(...) directly. It does not inject the real scrub gesture, which is a Ctrl/Cmd-drag of the current time (playback.scrubAudio). The test checks app.ui.status and the feed. It does not check the rendered status or toast. Inject the scrub through the headless harness and assert the visible status text. Keep the existing feed and session-state assertions.

As per coding guidelines: "crates/ui-egui/tests/**/*.rs: Test targeted UI interactions with the headless egui_kittest harness, injecting the interaction and asserting both relevant UI behavior and resulting session state".

@h-a-n-a-s-h-i Could you review this when you have a chance? The latest commit, 6666eba9, addresses the new audio feedback and the two additional concerns from the automated review.

I reproduced all three before fixing them: valid low-frame-rate exports exceeded the mixer limit, a failed movie mix left a partial output, and an expression runtime limit silently fell back and retried per sample. Exports now mix bounded blocks; failed jobs remove only their owned output paths; audio expressions share a cumulative deadline/yield budget, with a shorter scrub deadline. The scrub test now drives the real Cmd-drag gesture and checks the drawn error toast, audio feed, current time, and recovery.

Full cargo xtask ci passed on Windows: 3,676 passed, 0 failed, 33 ignored, plus strict Clippy, audits, and 32-crate WASM checks. The opt-in workload matrix and 180-second streaming run were also rerun, with unchanged sample hashes. New coverage includes large exact-sample mono/stereo mixes at 44.1/192 kHz, cancellation in a later block, low-frame-rate MOV/VP9/AV1 exports, and failed-output cleanup. Native device playback was validated on the preceding revision; this last revision uses automated production-runtime and headless UI tests.

For merge order, the small Windows helper fix #1889, font-test isolation #1890, and socket fix #1891 are separate PRs; their changes are included here so this branch's complete Windows CI passes. Merging those first would reduce this PR's diff. The Chinese fallback race fix #1907 is independent. Happy to adjust the split if a different review order is preferable.

The two retained audio architecture concerns are addressed in 6a9ebb5b and ready for review:

  • Reproduced a nested volume script ignoring a zero-yield budget. Volume and audio-effect parameters now enter the same shared control as Time Remap, including nested mixes. Tests cover resource exhaustion, cancellation, ordinary-error fallback, runtime recovery, and a shared allowance across eight layers nested twice.
  • Reproduced cancellation deleting another writer's replacement at the destination. Disk outputs now stay in unique temporary files on the destination volume until encoding succeeds; failed jobs discard staging files rather than unlinking final paths. Coverage includes overlapping independent jobs, preserved old destinations, successful publication, publication failure and dropped-job cleanup. Publication is atomic per file, not across a whole sequence; completed files already published before a rename failure remain.

Full cargo xtask ci passed: 3,683 passed, 0 failed, 33 unchanged ignored, strict Clippy, formatting, audits, and all 32 WASM crates. Seven regression tests were added. The opt-in workload matrix and 180-second stream were rerun; all eight hashes/errors match the previous results. This revision uses automated runtime and UI tests; native device playback was not repeated.

CI also reproduced two existing failures previously reported in other PRs. Those now have separate test-only fixes: #1915 removes wall-clock assumptions from Auto backend tests; #1916 serializes only the four Windows viewer screenshot harnesses after reproducing a d3d10warp.dll crash with three parallel screenshot tests. Ten backend-test repetitions, five screenshot-subset repetitions, two full viewer runs, and full CI passed afterward. No test was newly skipped and production graphics behavior is unchanged.

Documentation updates are also pushed to #1889 and #1891. Suggested merge order: the small companion fixes #1889, #1890, #1891, #1915 and #1916 first, then this audio PR (their changes are included here as separate commits where applicable). The Chinese fallback fix #1907 remains independent.

Native playback rerun on 6a9ebb5 passed: fresh process, same-session reopen, replay after stop, arithmetic expressions, looping, cancellation, work-limit reporting/recovery, and a second process. Audio remained active past 12 seconds and normal runs stopped at the intended 359/24-second endpoint. Manual cancellation stopped an expensive script in 25 ms; allowing it to continue produced the expected work-limit message in 658 ms. Verification used the native audio-device path/status/meters plus a visual screenshot, not a loopback recording or listening assessment.

The new review findings are addressed: Unix staging files now request mode 0666 subject to umask, with a Unix-only regression comparing normal file creation; screenshot harness overlap is removed and post-release state assertions added. The Unix-only test cannot run on this Windows host. The general request to lock UI-only viewer tests does not apply to the installed lazy renderer; construction assertions and the explanation on #1916 document why those tests stay parallel.

Pushed in 5adbd8f. Final combined Windows cargo xtask ci: 3,683 passed, 0 failed, 33 unchanged ignored; formatting, strict Clippy, audits, and 32-crate WASM checks passed. An additional 64-thread ui_viewer run passed all 66 tests. Companion PR files are byte-identical to those validated in the combined audio branch.

Reproduced the restricted-file issue on Linux: the previous implementation exposed staging media with group/other read bits under umask 022. Staging files now start owner-only at creation. Existing Unix access-mode bits are captured and are intersected with any tighter destination mode observed before publication. New destinations retain ordinary umask-filtered creation modes, measured with a separate empty probe that never contains media. Failure to inspect the destination policy aborts publication.

Added regression coverage for 0600/0640/0400 replacements, staging confidentiality, permissions changed or destinations removed during encoding, and permission-lookup failure/cleanup. The actual production out.rs and pending.rs modules were compiled into a small Linux test harness and executed in WSL on its Linux filesystem: all seven tests passed under each of umasks 022, 077 and 002, and Unix-target strict Clippy passed. This is focused Linux verification, not a full Linux application build.

The socket recovery hardening from #1891 is also included in this branch as a separate companion commit.

Pushed in 7b81eb7. The final combined Windows cargo xtask ci passed: 3,685 tests passed, 0 failed, 33 unchanged ignored; formatting, strict Clippy, audits and 32-crate WASM checks passed. The standalone socket PR file is byte-identical to the file validated in the combined audio branch.

@coderabbitai full review

The latest commit narrows this PR to audio Time Remap and its necessary evaluation/cancellation/error handling. Please review the current aggregate diff against the base branch.

Export staging/file replacement was removed and preserved for separate follow-up, so the symlink and group/ACL findings against that implementation are no longer part of this diff. The existing direct-write/cleanup limitations are explicitly documented in the PR description. Companion socket/font/platform-test fixes remain in their own PRs.

Validation: 118 focused tests, representative and 180-second workloads, and native playback/reopen/restart/cancel/recovery checks passed on the exact reduced source. Full CI with the separately tracked companion fixes temporarily overlaid passed (3,680 tests, zero failures); the overlay was removed before committing. Exact standalone Windows CI still encounters the baseline #1889 test-helper warning. The description distinguishes these results.

@coderabbitai review

Reproduced both current-head findings and addressed them within the audio scope:

  • Strong time stretch: a 16,384-frame block at 65x failed with WorkLimit. Oversized source spans now use bounded pages with an interpolation lookahead sample; ordinary-sized reads are unchanged. The original cumulative source-work allowance remains in place, with per-page charging and cancellation checks. Regression coverage compares every sample at 44.1/48 kHz, three stretch factors, a nonzero start, and direct/nested sources; it also checks cancellation and cumulative-budget exhaustion.
  • Property-read pass exhaustion: a script issuing a fresh host request on each replay reached the actual property-read pass limit, but the mix returned successful fallback audio. That exhaustion now marks the active shared audio control failed. The regression verifies the precise pass-limit error, mix failure before source reads, and recovery of the same runtime for a valid expression.

Validation passed: 116 focused mixer/expression/export tests and the exact-source native fresh-playback/cancellation/work-limit/recovery smoke checks. Full cargo xtask ci passed with the same separately tracked companion fixes temporarily overlaid: 3683 passed, zero failed, 33 ignored, plus fmt/strict Clippy/audits/32-crate WASM. All overlay files were restored byte-for-byte before committing; the standalone Windows baseline limitation remains as documented.

The unrelated companion fixes and export-file redesign remain outside this PR.

@coderabbitai review

Updated the work-limit message to mention time stretching alongside remapping and nested compositions, and updated the existing scrub-error UI assertion. This is a two-line wording change; work limits and mixing behavior are unchanged.

Full cargo xtask ci passed with the documented temporary companion overlay: 3683 passed, zero failed, 33 ignored, plus formatting, strict Clippy, audits and the 32-crate WASM check. This includes the updated UI error assertion. All overlay files were restored before committing; no unrelated changes are included.

Rebased onto main b55cb5b and pushed 2175376. The Unix fixture is now exactly upstream's version from #1855; #1889 is no longer a pending prerequisite. The final audio PR patch is unchanged by the rebase.

Validation on the rebased branch, without companion fixes:

  • Formatting and strict workspace/all-target release Clippy passed.
  • The workspace test run reached 2,667 passed, 2 failed, 15 ignored, then stopped at the two existing socket tests covered by fix(script): interrupt blocked socket writes on close #1891: a_write_to_a_peer_that_stops_reading_fails_after_the_timeout and a_blocked_socket_doesnt_hold_up_the_others_and_close_interrupts_it. crates/script/src/socket.rs is unchanged from main. This is NOT a standalone full-CI pass.
  • All 10 audio_remap tests and 12 render_settings tests passed in that run. The already-built ui_audio_scrub test binary was then run separately: all 5 passed.
  • Layer, asset, PDF dependency policies and the 32-crate WASM check passed. WASM emitted a dead-code warning for pointer_wrap.rs State.disabled.

No unrelated fixes were added. A fresh CodeRabbit review has been requested because automatic review was paused.

CodeRabbit's manual review request completed with 'No files to review' and its marker now lists 2175376 as last reviewed. It posted no new findings; this was not a new full analysis or a rerun of its previously timed-out Clippy tool.

Thanks for tackling this. Per-sample remap with absolute page alignment is a good approach, and the block-boundary tests are convincing. A few things need to change before this can land:

  1. Pre-roll is charged against a budget sized only by the output block. mix_comp_with_control allows frames*1024 + 65536, but layer_audio passes n + pre to layer_raw, which charges it once up front and again as src_n. By my reading of that arithmetic against audio_fx::preroll (I haven't run these), it rejects ordinary projects with default effect settings:

    • two default-Compressor layers in a 1024-frame preview block at 48 kHz;
    • one layer with Compressor + Delay;
    • a remapped precomp containing one compressed layer, on page-straddling blocks;
    • one default Compressor in a 192 kHz export (over the 1,048,576 cap);
    • a WAV export whose span ends a few ms past a whole second.

    The pre-roll tests run at 8 kHz from layer start, which would hide this. Please scale the allowance with n + pre per layer (or exclude pre-roll), and add a 48 kHz test with two default Compressors mid-timeline.

  2. Export budget depends on chunk size. Export mixes per video batch (batch_size() depends on the thread count) and in 1 s blocks plus a remainder, so whether an export succeeds varies by machine and by span end. Please use a budget that does not depend on chunk length.

  3. The 5 s wall-clock deadline also covers footage decode and export (AudioEvalControl::new → Budget::charge/exhausted()). A slow first read of a long FLAC can then fail both export and preview, with a remap/stretch message. Please drop the deadline for export (cancellation already covers user aborts) and apply it only to expression time in preview.

  4. Nested remapped precomps re-mix 4097-frame pages per call with no cross-block cache. I'd expect cost to grow roughly twofold per nesting level, and preview to fail where export passes. Caching pages across preview blocks, or sizing the budget for nested page reads, would avoid that; a nested-precomp benchmark case would show how much it matters.

  5. wasm: unprepared remap expressions (loopOut(), valueAtTime, Math.*) run per sample on the UI thread in pump, with nothing bounding them. Please add a per-pump time or work cap, and a loopOut() benchmark case; the "long" case uses the prepared path.

  6. Holds repeat one sample, giving a DC level and clicks (the large-jump test asserts a constant 0.25). Is that intended? Silence or a short fade during a zero-speed hold would avoid the clicks.

  7. Rebase: move the test additions into tests/it/ per docs/testing.md (including the new crates/expr tests), squash the history (it contains reverted unrelated work), and consider moving the audio_out.rs drain-tail change to its own PR.
