A composition created from imported media can resolve its default render output to that same media file. The render queue now rejects outputs that would replace footage, an attached proxy or the project file, and moves conflicting default names aside. Explicit paths are kept and refused with a reason; other valid queued items can still render.
This PR is scoped to source protection. It does not add an overwrite flag, change ordinary-file replacement defaults for CLI/scripts/MCP, or add a confirmation dialog. #1922 owns staged export and the single preflight / confirmation replacement flow; its merge must retain the source check before export dispatch. The generic overwrite policy therefore needs no decision to land this guard.
Existing aliases are checked by native file identity, including hard links, symlinks, junctions and Windows short names. Identities are indexed once, hash matches are verified, and handles are closed after indexing. Same-size sequences no longer trigger pairwise source/output file comparisons.
Create Proxy chooses a new default filename when the current proxy is protected, for both movies and stills. An explicit protected proxy output is refused.
A folder-numbered sequence exceeding 100,000 frames is refused rather than checking only a prefix. Fixed-folder sequences are scanned by directory; Skip Existing Files leaves existing frames alone.
Mixed queues report pre-dispatch refusals in command results and exit with an error in CLI render, run and exec, while valid items still finish. A real CLI integration test verifies the imported PNG remains unchanged and the valid GIF is written.
After a Pre-render output is imported, re-queueing its original path is refused too; running Pre-render again chooses a fresh default. No last_output exemption bypasses source protection.
Save Current Preview uses the same output checks, including sequence frames and render logs.
Regression coverage includes aliases, default names, proxy recreation, the late sequence frame, linear identity lookup, and real PNG import through file.import followed by saving/reopening the project. The proxy, late-frame and identity regressions were confirmed to fail after temporarily removing their fixes; the import/reopen regression fails with the queue guard disabled. The mixed-queue CLI regression also fails with the old started-timestamp filter restored (exit 0 instead of 1). All fixes were restored afterward.
CLI failure integration tests: 2 passed, covering production render, run and exec.
Strict Clippy for engine, project and CLI, all targets: passed.
Formatting, dependency layers and asset attribution: passed.
WASM engine/project check: passed.
A focused GitHub Actions matrix runs the guard and naming regressions on Linux and Windows. Both matrix legs passed at final head 39137fbd784ca202142b349fa3c9db544b04f58c (Linux 5m42s, Windows 10m58s). The full hosted cargo xtask ci gate passed in 35m28s (run). Packaging lint, Nix evaluation, SonarCloud and CodeRabbit also passed. Windows has not been tested locally. The full local cargo xtask ci gate was not run.
The guard runs before dispatch, not atomically with filesystem writes. Exporter-side revalidation and staged replacement remain #1922's responsibility. Save/Save As and script File writes are outside this PR.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Render outputs are checked against project footage, proxies, project files, and render logs. Conflicting outputs are refused with a reason, while other valid queued items can continue.
Default output names are adjusted when they conflict with protected files; explicit paths are retained and refused if they conflict.
Preview exports are checked before saving, and image-sequence outputs are checked across the requested frame range.
Render results now include queued items that failed.
Documentation
Added details on output protection, sequence checks, and handling refused render items.

I can't approve this as it stands. The footage guard for #1743 is the right fix, but the PR bundles more than that, and some of it isn't ready.
Please split it. The PR does three separate things in 3,173 added lines across 39 files:
the #1743 fix: a render never writes over footage, a proxy or the project file, plus the Replace / Cancel prompt;
the same guard on about a dozen other commands (comp.saveFrameAs, file.saveCopy, file.collectFiles, file.exportTimeline, anim.savePreset, shortcuts.export, MCP render_frame and others);
refusing two queue items that write the same file, and numbering default names.
Each can be reviewed and reverted alone. I'd review the first one quickly.
New text is untranslated. The PR says "the new dialog strings have no translations yet". panels/overwrite.rs adds, among others, "Replace Existing File?", "Replace Existing Files?", "“{}” already exists in “{}”. Do you want to replace it?", "{} files that this render writes already exist. Do you want to replace them?", "Replacing it can't be undone." and "and {} more". Each needs a row in every language. The catalog is crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/ui.rs, and the only change there registers the new file with the scan test.
Rebase. GitHub reports the branch as conflicting.
Scripts and the CLI change behaviour.effectcraft-cli render --out X now fails when X exists unless --overwrite is passed, and a script's renderQueue.render() throws over an existing output. The description says this on purpose, which I appreciate. It is a break for anyone with a script that re-renders to the same file, so a maintainer should agree to it before it merges.
The description also says the full cargo xtask ci gate was not run. Hosted CI has not built this head.
Translations. The prompt's strings ("Replace Existing File?", "Replace Existing Files?", the two questions, "and {} more", "Replacing it can't be undone." and the rest) have a row in all seven catalogs (ja, zh-hans, zh-hant, uk, pt-br, cs, es), using each catalog's own words for file, render and frame. A test now fails if any of them is missing in any language, and checks that the file name still comes before its folder. I don't have native speakers for these, so a review by one is welcome.
Rebase. Onto current main. One conflict, in effectcraft-cli's help text, where --progress and --overwrite both added documentation; I kept both.
Behaviour change. It now has its own section in the description with the three changes spelled out. Please say whether you're happy with it. If you would rather not break scripts, I can keep replace-by-default for the CLI and scripts and keep only the footage guard and the prompt.
Hosted CI has not run on this head. The local checks are in the description; the full cargo xtask ci was not run.

Walkthrough
The change checks render outputs against project footage, proxies, project files, and render logs. It refuses conflicting outputs, adjusts conflicting default names, and applies checks across queue, proxy, pre-render, and preview operations. It also adds sequence-path helpers, tests, CI coverage, and documentation.
Sequence helpers format and recognize numbered paths, recover frame numbers, and insert numeric suffixes into templates. Tests cover path round-trips, candidate validation, and template numbering.
The output guard builds normalized source paths and native file-identity indexes. It checks sequence frames, identifies protected outputs, and selects alternate default names when needed.
Render operations exclude refused items from dispatch. Queue, composition, proxy, pre-render, and preview operations apply source avoidance or output checks. Failed queued items remain included in render results.
Regression coverage and supporting updates crates/engine/src/tests_render_overwrite.rs, apps/effectcraft-cli/tests/it/cli.rs, .github/workflows/render-source-protection.yml, docs/agents.md, docs/render-source-protection.md
Tests cover protected outputs, aliases, sequences, default naming, and CLI behavior. CI runs related tests on Ubuntu and Windows. Documentation describes the checks and their boundaries.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 39137
A render can still replace source footage if an output path is changed after the protection check. Resolve or explicitly accept that remaining risk before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 39137
The reviewed changes strengthen protection of footage, proxies, and project files without an established increase in write authority. Protection occurs before export, however, and is not an atomic guarantee against concurrent filesystem changes. Ordinary-file replacement behavior remains unchanged.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The relevant exposure is caller-selected output paths written with the application's existing filesystem permissions. The new guard narrows which native destinations can be dispatched; it does not introduce elevated privileges or a new write sink. Ordinary files outside the protected project-source set retain their previous replacement exposure.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — An actor able to change an output path or its aliases after preflight could still redirect a later truncating open onto a protected file. The guard documents this limitation, and the exporter remains unchanged from the PR base. This is a pre-existing exposure, not an established introduced or worsened concern.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The wasm branch bypasses the new guard. Browser exports use an in-memory sink that writes into the existing virtual-file table before downloading results, rather than opening native source files. This prevents treating the native-filesystem attack path as applicable to browser files, but does not establish source protection inside the shared virtual namespace. The inspected browser sink and store are unchanged from the PR base.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Source refusal is contained to the queue item before dispatch. Later job updates remain keyed by item identity, cancellation records stopped states, and finished worker threads are joined. Mixed-queue failure results remain visible to callers rather than being omitted merely because a refused item never started encoding.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — If protection must withstand concurrent filesystem mutation, extend enforcement into the exporter using non-destructive opening, opened-handle identity validation, and safe publication semantics. Pre-dispatch path checks alone cannot provide that stronger guarantee.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1743 requires that a render from footage does not silently replace the source file. The output guard checks footage paths, sequence frames, proxies, and the project file before export. It refuses protected outputs with or without overwrite permission. Default output names move to numbered names. Tests cover the reported composition workflow, explicit protected outputs, aliases, hard links, and queue continuation.

CodeRabbit's three findings are fixed in three commits on this branch:
65028b9: the Brazilian Portuguese row for "frames" now says "quadros", like the rest of that catalog.
785f912: Replace answers only for the outputs the prompt listed. If the queue's outputs change while the prompt is open (an agent can run renderQueue.setOutput over the control channel), the render stays pending and the prompt asks again about what is there now.
564746b: a hard link to footage under another name is footage, so a render can no longer truncate it through the other name. This adds one dependency to the engine on native targets, same-file; it was already in Cargo.lock through walkdir and is Unlicense or MIT.
The description is updated, and #1829 and #1830 are rebased onto this.

Do not cap protected-frame discovery for directory sequences.
When skip_existing is false, frames_on_disk checks only the first 100,000 frames. A protected footage frame after that limit is absent from there, so protected.find does not block it. With overwrite disabled, the preflight check then allows the render. The exporter calls std::fs::File::create, which truncates the existing frame before writing.

Open output files without truncating, then validate the opened handle. The render queue checks the pathname before rendering, but crates/export/src/out.rs later calls std::fs::File::create(path). A concurrent replacement can make this call follow a symlink or hard link to protected footage and truncate it. Open the file without truncation, compare the opened handle with protected files, and truncate only after the identity check succeeds.

Agreed: a pre-dispatch pathname check cannot close the check-before-write race. This revision does not implement opened-handle validation or claim atomic source protection. The limitation is explicit in output_guard.rs, docs/render-source-protection.md and the updated PR body.
The PR is now scoped to the source guard and safe default names. Exporter-side revalidation and staged replacement are left to #1922, whose integration must retain the source check before export dispatch. This thread remains open because the race itself is not fixed here.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@nanox333 Understood. The narrower scope does not fix the check-before-write race, so this finding remains valid and the thread should stay open.
For #1922, retain the source check before export dispatch. Verify that a link replacement between the check and the write cannot truncate protected footage.
Is #1922 sufficient to track this work, or would you like a separate follow-up issue?
Thanks for splitting this and for the careful write-up. The footage guard holds up well. I tried symlinks, hard links, .., case, sequence frames and Windows short names, and the identity fallback in alias_of catches every one of them once the file exists. A few things before it can go in:
Create Proxy can't refresh a proxy any more.file.createProxy (crates/engine/src/commands/proxy.rs:186-194) keeps the fixed [compName]_proxy… name and doesn't call avoid_sources. A second Create Proxy on the same comp therefore targets the current proxy, and the item fails with "a render never replaces a proxy". On main that workflow works. The one-line else { s.avoid_sources(&mut it); } is in #1743, part 3: two Render Queue outputs never write the same file, and default names avoid the queue's other outputs #1830; please move it into this PR, since this PR introduces the refusal, and add a test.
alias_of is quadratic on same-size frames.output_guard.rs:137-151 calls same_file::is_same_file (two opens and stats) for every existing output file against every protected file of the same size, and keeps going when nothing matches. Uncompressed TIFF/EXR sequences and earlier renders imported as footage all share one size, so re-rendering a long sequence over its previous output can take N×M opens. That runs on the UI thread in overwrite::guard (panels/overwrite.rs:54), again on Replace, and again in start_render_with. Could you build a set of identity() values once per Protected and look outputs up in it?
PROBE_LIMIT (output_guard.rs:32,231), which CodeRabbit also flagged: a footage frame beyond frame 100,000 of a sequence whose number is in a folder name is neither blocked nor counted as existing. Either drop the cap for the protected check or refuse when count > PROBE_LIMIT.
panels/overwrite.rs:71: a single sequence output with one existing frame reads "1 files that this render writes already exist".
Please rebase. It conflicts in Cargo.toml/Cargo.lock, engine/src/lib.rs, script/src/prelude.js, ui-egui/src/{i18n/ui.rs,lib.rs,menus.rs} and docs. Then re-check that the regression tests fail without the fix, and get hosted CI green. Most of the engine tests also hand-build Footage; one more that imports through file.import and reopens the project would cover the production path in the engine, not just the CLI.
Preserve existing exports until rendering succeeds and confirm overwrites #1922 adds a second overwrite prompt and a different renderQueue.render contract (preflight → confirmation, with overwrite only valid alongside it). We need to settle on one API before either lands. Your output_guard blocked/protected logic would fit under either.
On the default change: the footage/proxy/project guard is clearly right. Whether CLI, scripts and MCP should refuse existing files by default is for the maintainers to decide. #1922 proposes the same flip, so that decision covers both PRs.

Allow a pre-render item to reuse its previous output.
After the first render, ImportAndReplace imports the output as footage. renderQueue.setRender can re-queue the completed item, but the next render sees the same output path as protected footage and marks the item failed. This blocks updating a pre-render in place.
Allow the item to replace its own last_output, or route that case through replacement consent. Keep protection for footage used by other queue items.

This is deliberate in the narrowed source-protection revision: after ImportAndReplace, the output is footage, so last_output cannot grant permission to replace it. Re-queueing that same path is refused. Running render.preRender again chooses a fresh numbered default, or the user can choose another Output To.
39137fb adds refreshing_a_pre_render_uses_a_new_default_without_exempting_imported_footage and documents this behavior in docs/render-source-protection.md. It checks refusal of the original path, preservation of the first output, and successful rendering to the new default. The focused Ubuntu/Windows regression jobs pass on that head. This addresses the refresh workflow through a new output; it does not implement in-place replacement. Leaving this open for review of that behavior.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@nanox333 Your explanation addresses my concern. Once ImportAndReplace imports the output as footage, last_output must not bypass source protection. My recommendation to allow in-place replacement was incorrect for this revision.
Using a fresh numbered default through render.preRender supports another render without replacing imported footage. The described regression test covers that intended behavior.
I withdraw the requested exemption. I will leave the thread open as you requested. I have not independently verified the reported CI results.

Fix #1743: a render never replaces footage or the project file, and asks before replacing other files
Fix #1743: protect render outputs from replacing project sources
Oct 25, 2026
@skylartaylor@FredApps Thanks for checking the aliases and for the specific follow-ups. I've narrowed this revision to the protected-file guard and safe default names, leaving staged ordinary-file replacement and its one confirmation API to #1922. There is no longer a separate overwrite prompt or CLI/script/MCP default change in this PR.
The proxy default-name fix is now in this PR, with both movie/still recreation and explicit-path refusal tested. Native identities are indexed once and matching IDs are verified, while closing handles after indexing; this preserves Windows hard-link detection without keeping every source open. Folder-numbered ranges over 100,000 frames are refused rather than partially checked. Removing this PR's prompt also removes the single-sequence pluralization bug.
The branch is rebased onto current main. There is a new engine regression that imports a generated PNG through file.import, saves/reopens the project, and confirms the imported frame remains protected. The key regressions were also checked with the relevant fixes temporarily removed. A focused Linux/Windows CI matrix covers source protection and output naming.
A final CLI check also found that an early source refusal was hidden when another queue item succeeded. The command reply and CLI now include those refused items, so mixed queues still complete valid exports but report failure to callers. The regression uses a real generated PNG, production import/save/reopen and real GIF export through render, run and exec.
On the new pre-render comment: once an output is imported, it is protected footage. Exempting last_output would bypass that invariant, so re-queueing that same path is deliberately refused. Running Pre-render again chooses a fresh default name. This behavior is documented and covered by a regression. The checkout step also disables credential persistence.
Final local validation: engine 714 passed / 4 ignored; project render-queue 12 passed; CLI failure integration 2 passed; strict Clippy (engine/project/CLI, all targets), formatting, layers, assets and engine/project WASM check passed. The CLI regression also fails when its reporting fix is removed. The full local cargo xtask ci gate was not run. Linux and Windows focused CI passed at final head 39137fbd784ca202142b349fa3c9db544b04f58c. The full hosted cargo xtask ci gate also passed (run); all checks are green on that head.
The title and description now reflect this scope and validation. The check-before-write filesystem race remains documented and open for exporter-side revalidation; this revision does not claim to close it.

Fixes #1743.
#1922 owns staged export and the single
preflight/confirmationreplacement flow; its merge must retain the source check before export dispatch. The generic overwrite policy therefore needs no decision to land this guard.render, runandexec, while valid items still finish. A real CLI integration test verifies the imported PNG remains unchanged and the valid GIF is written.last_outputexemption bypasses source protection.Regression coverage includes aliases, default names, proxy recreation, the late sequence frame, linear identity lookup, and real PNG import through
file.importfollowed by saving/reopening the project. The proxy, late-frame and identity regressions were confirmed to fail after temporarily removing their fixes; the import/reopen regression fails with the queue guard disabled. The mixed-queue CLI regression also fails with the old started-timestamp filter restored (exit 0 instead of 1). All fixes were restored afterward.Validation on Linux, rebased onto
