What this adds

DrawingML run properties carry kumimoji on a:rPr (組み文字): per ISO/IEC 29500-1 it "specifies whether the numbers contained within vertical text continue vertically with the text or whether they are to be displayed horizontally while the surrounding characters continue in a vertical fashion. If this attribute is omitted, a value of 0, or false, is assumed."

DeckCraft read and wrote dozens of a:rPr attributes but not this one, so it was dropped on open (and therefore gone on save), and East Asian vertical text (a:bodyPr/@vert="eaVert") laid ASCII digits on their side because only ideographs/kana stand upright. A Japanese vertical slide with 組み文字-marked numbers was both lossy and wrong on screen.

  • Model: RunProps.kumimoji: Option<bool> in crates/model/src/text.rs, with the spec wording and the Japanese meaning in the doc comment; merged with the other run properties in RunProps::inherit.
  • Round trip: read in crates/pptx/src/read/dml.rs::rpr(), written in crates/pptx/src/write/dml.rs next to noProof (only when Some), so 1, 0 and absent all survive an open + save.
  • Layout: the per-grapheme upright decision in crates/text now honours the flag in East Asian vertical text (Upright::Cjk): is_upright(c) || kumimoji(i). Runs without the attribute behave exactly as before, and horizontal text and stacked (Upright::All) text are untouched — per the spec the attribute only concerns vertical text.
  • Command: format.kumimoji ({"on"?: bool}, label Combine Characters (Kumimoji), menu: [] like format.caps since it is a run property with no ribbon button) toggles the selection's runs; off removes the attribute, which the spec reads as false. It is reachable from the command palette, the control channel, MCP and the CLI.

Tests

cargo fmt --all -- --check clean; cargo clippy -p deckcraft-model -p deckcraft-pptx -p deckcraft-text -p deckcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings clean; cargo test -p deckcraft-model -p deckcraft-pptx -p deckcraft-text and cargo test -p deckcraft-engine all pass (engine lib 317 passed, 0 failed, including every_command_survives_empty_and_hostile_params).

pptx kumimoji_round_trips Some(true)/Some(false)/None: kumimoji="1"/"0" in slide1.xml, all three re-read unchanged
text kumimoji_stands_digits_upright_in_east_asian_vertical_text 第1章 in eaVert: the 1 lies on its side without, stands with kumimoji, is unchanged with an explicit false, and horizontal/stacked are untouched
render kumimoji_stands_digits_upright_in_east_asian_vertical_text ink of "1" in eaVert: h>2w with kumimoji, w>2h without, the boxes transposes of each other
engine format_kumimoji_toggles_the_selected_text_and_survives_a_save on/off/toggle on a selection, then an eaVert body saved through file.saveBytes → deckcraft_pptx::import keeps both vert and kumimoji

Notes / uncertainty

  • The spec sentence does not spell out which value means which. We implement true → upright (numbers continue down the vertical line like the surrounding characters) and false/absent → today's behaviour (the glyph lies on its side). That reading follows the spec's default and matches PowerPoint's default orientation for digits in vertical text, but it was not observed in PowerPoint (none available here; reading the Office bundle is forbidden by AGENTS.md).
  • It applies the flag to every character of a marked run, a superset of the spec's "numbers".
  • An upright glyph still turns about its own advance box (upright_centre), so an upright digit keeps a proportional advance rather than a full em; PowerPoint's exact advance/centring for kumimoji is unverified.
  • We keep an explicit kumimoji="0" on round trip (the spec default); the command writes nothing when turning it off.
  • Not compiled: deckcraft-ui-egui, deckcraft-mcp, the apps — no ui-egui source changed, and no exhaustive RunProps literal exists outside the compiled crates (grepped); the command is not on a ribbon button or in the Font dialog, so a mouse-only user cannot reach it yet.
  • Docs: docs/file-format-parity.md (Text row + revision history) and one ROADMAP.md progress row.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a text-formatting option to keep numbers upright in East Asian vertical text.
    • The setting is preserved when importing and exporting PowerPoint files.

CI note (from the contributor side): the workflow run on this branch shows action_required — GitHub holds workflow runs from first-time contributors until a maintainer approves them, so no job has started yet and nothing has failed. A maintainer clicking Approve and run on the run will start it.

While waiting I ran the same gate locally (macOS, rustc 1.99.0, wasm32-unknown-unknown installed):

$ cargo xtask ci
CI summary: all 7 steps passed (fmt, pdf-deps, clippy, test, assets, layers, wasm)

So the branch is expected to be green once the run is approved.

Rebased onto main (a178b99). The only conflict was the ROADMAP.md progress log (and a revision-history row in docs/file-format-parity.md) — both sides had added a row in the same place; both are kept now. No code changed: the patch is otherwise identical to the one whose local CI run is described above, so the verification still applies.

No actionable merge-blocking issue remains; the historical timeline is preserved.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to cf814

The change remains confined to document formatting, rendering, and save behavior. The inspected paths retain existing document-selection and edit-recovery mechanisms; no material security risk was identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The introduced effects are bounded to presentation state, derived text layout, and saved PPTX run properties. An input document can influence glyph orientation through the new boolean, but the inspected changes do not turn it into a resource locator, executable input, credential, or permission decision.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The added command exposes another formatting operation through the existing registry, rather than introducing a separate privileged execution path. It retains the existing selection enablement and shared mutation mechanisms. This establishes the inspected engine boundary, not an independent assurance about authorization in every external host.

Rebased onto current main and force-pushed. The conflicts were documentation-only (the header and revision-history rows); code is unchanged, so the verification described above still applies.

…text

`a:rPr/@kumimoji` (組み文字) was neither read nor written, so a Japanese
vertical slide lost it on save, and crates/text laid every ASCII digit on
its side in eaVert because only ideographs and kana stand upright.

- RunProps.kumimoji (Option<bool>), inherited like its neighbours.
- PPTX read/write of the attribute, written only when Some.
- Layout: the internal char style carries kumimoji and the per-grapheme
upright test in `shape_cells` takes it in Upright::Cjk (eaVert) text
only; Upright::All (stacked) and horizontal text are unchanged.
- `format.kumimoji {on?: bool}` toggles the selected runs.

Tests: a PPTX round trip of kumimoji 1, 0 and absent; a layout test that
the digit stands in eaVert but not in horizontal or stacked text; a render
test that the ink of "1" is the transpose of the unmarked digit; and an
engine test that the command toggles the selection and survives a save.

Addressed the documentation findings in the latest push (rebased onto current main, so the files were re-resolved): the historical revision-history and progress-log rows keep their original dates again, the duplicate table rows the merge left behind are consolidated (the row this PR rewrites is the only copy now), and this PR's own entry is dated 2026-10-20. No code changed in that pass, so the verification above still applies.

The new progress-log and revision-history rows are dated 2026-10-20, but
docs/file-format-parity.md still said Last reviewed/Last updated
2026-10-17 and ROADMAP.md's header was left at 2026-10-18, so both were
older than their newest row. Put Last reviewed back to main's 2026-10-14
(the date the documents were reviewed), move Last updated to the newest
row's 2026-10-20 as every earlier update did, and carry the kumimoji
change into the Change line. The file-format Change chain also regained
"previous: minor, native chart payloads...", which the last rebase
dropped.

Add the ROADMAP revision-history row a progress-log entry gets (the
review's nitpick: the kumimoji progress row had no matching revision
row). Existing revision-history and progress-log rows keep their
original dates from main; only the new rows are dated 2026-10-20.

No code changes. Verified on the branch: deckcraft-engine 333 passed
1 ignored (+ integration tests), deckcraft-text, deckcraft-model,
deckcraft-pptx and deckcraft-render all pass (pptx 78 lib tests,
render 49, text 83); cargo fmt --all -- --check clean; clippy
--all-targets -D warnings on those crates clean.

Addressed the review findings in db6225a (documentation only; no code changed).

Header dates — docs/file-format-parity.md said "Last reviewed/Last updated 2026-10-17" while the new revision-history row is dated 2026-10-20, so the header was older than its newest entry. "Last reviewed" is back at main's 2026-10-14 (the date the document was reviewed) and "Last updated" is 2026-10-20, matching the newest row the way every earlier update did. The Change line now carries previous: minor, native chart payloads stored in bounded ZIP members; as well — that entry had been dropped when the branch was re-resolved. ROADMAP.md's header is fixed the same way (it was still at 2026-10-18) and names the kumimoji change.

Existing rows — the review's two other findings (the dates of the older revision-history and progress-log rows) were already addressed; re-checked against main: every existing row in docs/file-format-parity.md and ROADMAP.md keeps its original date and only the new rows are 2026-10-20.

Revision-history row (the nitpick) — ROADMAP.md now has the matching revision-history row for the kumimoji progress-log entry, dated 2026-10-20.

Verification (local, CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2) — no source files changed on this branch, but the branch was re-verified:

  • cargo test -p deckcraft-engine: 333 passed, 1 ignored, plus integration targets
  • cargo test -p deckcraft-text -p deckcraft-model -p deckcraft-pptx -p deckcraft-render: all pass (text 83, pptx 78 lib tests, render 49; round-trip and rendering kumimoji tests included)
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check: clean
  • cargo clippy -p deckcraft-text -p deckcraft-model -p deckcraft-pptx -p deckcraft-render -p deckcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean

The render test for `a:rPr/@kumimoji` required the ink of "1" to be more
than twice as wide as tall when eaVert lays it on its side, and more than
twice as tall as wide when kumimoji stands it up. That holds only for a
face whose "1" is unusually narrow; the default face on Linux gives the
rotated ink 54x34, so the test failed on the OS CI runs even though the
digit plainly lies on its side and the quarter turn is exact.

Assert that each ink is wider/taller than its other dimension and that the
two are each other's transpose. The transpose check is what proves the
quarter turn; the ratio only named the orientation.

Tests: cargo test -p deckcraft-text -p deckcraft-model -p deckcraft-pptx
-p deckcraft-render -p deckcraft-engine (all pass; render 175, text 81,
engine 333 + 1 ignored).

Checked at db6225a: the three review findings were already fixed on the branch (and the threads are resolved), so no code change was made for them.

Verification did turn up one real failure in this PR's own render test: crates/render/src/tests.rs required the rotated 1 ink to be more than twice as wide, but on Linux it measures 54×34 (1.6×). It now asserts the orientation plus the quarter-turn transpose check, which is what the test was really pinning. Fixed in e2cfbfc.

deckcraft-engine 333 passed/1 ignored, model 78, pptx 49, roundtrip 46 (kumimoji_round_trips ok), render 175, text 81; cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy -D warnings clean.

No conflicts: main merged cleanly into the branch.
Conflicts resolved by keeping both sides:
- ROADMAP.md: main's newer header lines and progress-log and revision-history
rows kept, with the branch's 2026-10-20 kumimoji entry kept beside main's
entry of the same date. Code merged without conflicts.
