Problem

Format Shape ▸ Fill ▸ Pattern fill sets a 25 % pattern in accent 1 on background 1, and the pane offers no way to pick another pattern or change either color. The solid-fill Color button under it replaces the pattern with a solid fill, and its Transparency slider does not change a pattern. Format Background ▸ Pattern fill lists 10 of the 54 presets as their XML names (pct5, ltHorz, dkDnDiag, ...).

PowerPoint's Fill pane shows the patterns to click, then Foreground color and Background color, each with a Color menu: Format Object (Fill pane), Pattern fill section (archived 2024-07-24).

Fix

  • fillui::pattern_editor draws a gallery of all 54 DrawingML presets in the fill's own colors, with Foreground and Background color menus. Each swatch has a name in words ("Dark downward diagonal", "Zig zag") for its tooltip and for screen readers. The swatch names follow the MsoPatternType descriptions (archived 2024-12-14).
  • Format Shape shows it when the selected shape has a pattern fill (shape.fill {pattern}), and hides the solid-fill Color button and Transparency slider for that fill. Format Background shows it in place of the 10 labels (design.background {pattern}).
  • deckcraft-render exports pattern_presets, pattern_tile and pattern_is_fg, which the gallery uses to draw its swatches.
  • A swatch with keyboard focus gets the same outline as a hovered or selected one.
  • Color parameters carry preset and system colors as {"preset": name} and {"system": name, "last": "#RRGGBB"} with their transforms, and the engine reads both forms. An imported pattern fill with such a color keeps it when the preset or the other color changes; before, cref_param sent #000000 for those bases.
  • ROADMAP progress log and the Format Shape row of docs/ui-parity.md.

Test

New tests in crates/ui-egui/src/pattern_fill_tests.rs:

  • shape_pattern_fill_picks_a_preset_from_the_gallery: Format Shape lists all 54 presets by name and no Transparency slider, and a click sets the preset in one undo step and keeps both colors. Fails on main.
  • shape_pattern_fill_sets_its_foreground_and_background_colors: each color menu changes its own color and keeps the pattern and the other color. Fails on main.
  • background_pattern_fill_offers_every_preset_and_both_colors: Format Background picks Zig zag, which it did not list before, and sets the background color. Fails on main.
  • shape_solid_fill_keeps_its_transparency_without_a_pattern_gallery: a solid fill still shows Transparency and no pattern gallery.
  • shape_pattern_fill_keeps_preset_and_system_colors and background_pattern_fill_keeps_a_system_color: a preset or color change keeps an imported preset or system color. Fail without the cref_param change.
  • pattern_gallery_shows_which_swatch_has_keyboard_focus: the focused swatch is outlined. Fails without the focus change.
  • cmd::tests::preset_and_system_colors_keep_their_base (engine): color_value reads both forms.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Format Shape and Format Background offer all 54 preset pattern fills, displayed with the current foreground and background colors.
    • Choose foreground and background colors independently from the pattern gallery.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Pattern fills no longer show solid-fill transparency controls; transparency remains available for solid fills.
    • Preset and system colors are preserved when editing fills instead of reverting to black.

…and Background colors

Format Shape's Pattern fill set 25 % in accent 1 on background 1 and
offered no way to change it, and Format Background listed 10 of the 54
presets by their XML names. Both panes now show the same editor: a
gallery of the 54 DrawingML presets drawn in the fill's own colors,
each named in words, and Foreground and Background color menus.

With a pattern fill, Format Shape no longer shows the solid-fill Color
button, which replaced the pattern with a solid fill, or the
Transparency slider, which did not change a pattern. The renderer
exports the preset list and tiles for the gallery to draw.

Walkthrough

Format Shape and Format Background now use a shared gallery for 54 preset pattern fills. The editor renders patterns with the current foreground and background colors and provides menus to change either color. Preset and system color data is also preserved during parsing and serialization.

Changes: Pattern Fill Galleries

Layer / File(s) Summary
Preserve preset and system colors
crates/engine/src/cmd/mod.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs
Color parsing accepts preset and system color objects. Serialization retains their identifying fields and supported modifiers.
Expose presets and build the gallery
crates/render/src/pattern.rs, crates/render/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/fillui.rs
The render crate exposes preset names and pattern tiles. The UI adds labels for 54 presets, renders pattern swatches, and provides an editor for preset and color selection.
Integrate pattern editing in panes
crates/ui-egui/src/panes.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/pattern_fill_tests.rs, ROADMAP.md, docs/ui-parity.md
Format Shape and Format Background use the shared editor. UI tests cover preset and color changes, transparency controls, and undo behavior. The roadmap records the gallery; the parity row retains its listed coverage.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 261e7

Pattern presets are available in both format panes, and edits preserve named colors. No identified issue remains to resolve before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 261e7

Pattern editing remains confined to presentation content. No new permission or external-access capability was identified, but broader compatibility and recovery coverage is incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The largest inspected mutation scope remains within the active presentation: shape fills can affect explicitly targeted or selected shapes and their group descendants; background commands can affect all slides and used masters, including inherited layout backgrounds. These targeting capabilities are unchanged by this PR.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No introduced privilege-escalation or markup-injection path was identified in the inspected color flow. Command-provided names become color-model data, use value-based resolution, and reach escaped document attributes. This conclusion is bounded to the inspected flow, not exhaustive dependent coverage.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The PPTX writer selects fixed color element names and writes supplied preset/system names as attribute values. The shared attribute writer escapes XML delimiters and quotes and drops invalid XML characters. The reader and writer already supported these named model variants before this PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Malformed pattern colors can still produce successful edits using theme defaults rather than errors. This behavior predates the PR, including for system objects lacking last; it is not a newly weakened rollback guarantee. Valid named-color preservation and a single undo entry are asserted by the added UI tests, which were inspected but not executed in this review.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: Format pattern fill now shows a gallery of all preset patterns, drawn with Foreground and Background color menus. The changeset matches this. It adds a 54-preset pattern gallery in fillui.rs, replaces the Format Background presets and color pickers with the shared pattern editor in panes.rs, hides the solid-fill color and transparency controls for pattern fills in Format Shape, and exports pattern_presets, pattern_tile, and pattern_is_fg from deckcraft_render. The title is concise and specific, and it does not use vague terms. The changeset also includes color-preservation fixes in engine cmd and ribbon, which the title does not mention, but the title still covers the primary change.

…shows focus

A pattern fill imported with a preset (prstClr) or system (sysClr) color
turned that color black on any change in the gallery or either color
menu, because the color parameter fell back to #000000 for those bases.
Color parameters now carry them as {"preset": name} and
{"system": name, "last": "#RRGGBB"}, with their transforms, and the
engine reads both forms.

A pattern swatch with keyboard focus now gets the same outline as a
hovered or selected one.
