File: save selected slides as a new file, split a presentation - #1108
file.saveSlidesAs {path, slides?, format?}: writes the selected slides (or slides: indices or a range such as 1-3;5) to a new .pptx/.deckcraft/.potx/.ppsx. The open deck and its file name stay as they are.
file.split {path, every | bySection, format?, overwrite?}: writes the deck as name-1.pptx, name-2.pptx… one file per N slides or per section (section names are added to the file name).
A part keeps the masters, media, sections and custom shows its slides use and drops the rest.
Every part is encoded and every file name checked before anything is written; existing files are only replaced with overwrite: true.
UI: File › Save Selected Slides As… and Split Presentation… (small dialog), and Save Slides As… in the slide list's context menu.
Tests: six engine tests (selection/range, split by N and by section, refusals write nothing, a part drops unused sections and media). fmt, clippy -D warnings, the engine and ui-egui test suites, assets, layers and the wasm check pass. The dialogs weren't clicked through in the running app (no desktop build here).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Save selected slides, individual slides, or ranges as a separate presentation in supported formats.
Split a presentation into multiple files by slide count or section.
Access slide export from the File menu or slide context menu, and splitting from the File menu.
Improvements
Invalid split settings and existing output files are reported before files are written.
Choose an output location when a save or split command needs a file path.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review a8957
Web downloads requested in other formats have misleading .pptx names, and a concurrent file creation could bypass the split operation’s no-overwrite check. These bounded issues are suitable for owner follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to a8957
Automated exports can replace existing output files despite overwrite being disabled when those files are writable but outside the permitted read folder. The exposure remains bounded by existing write permissions, but the new protection against unintended replacement is not reliable.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: The new exports can replace existing writable automation outputs with overwrite omitted or false. Their existence guard uses file_len, which returns None when read authority is denied. With separate input and output roots, an existing output therefore passes preflight, and the replacement-capable writer accepts it under write authority. This defeats the new no-overwrite contract and can destroy unrelated output data without escaping the permitted write root.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The retained integrity concern affects existing, non-open destinations within the caller's effective write authority, potentially across up to 500 split outputs per invocation. It does not establish a write-root escape, credential gain, or cross-tenant exposure. The underlying replacement-capable writer predates this PR; the new defect is reliance on a read-filtered helper for the export protection.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A confined automation caller can invoke a new export with an explicit destination inside its write root but outside its read root. For an existing destination not open in the session, read denial becomes a false absence result, so overwrite:false does not stop replacement. This is an unintended destructive export path, not additional authority for a caller already able to invoke general saves.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Native writes still pass through automation write-root checks, while browser output stays behind the download callback. Selected-slide saving sets overwrite=true after the native picker returns, relying on host confirmation behavior. Repository-local evidence does not prove that confirmation on every supported platform, but no confirmation bypass was established.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Existing-file refusal tests demonstrate protection in unconfined sessions, and open-file tests cover alternate path spellings and another open document. Those tests do not cover the read-denied, write-authorized configuration that invalidates the new guard.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Represent create-only versus replacement policy at the write boundary, independently of permission to read destination metadata. A write-authorized, fail-closed destination check and no-replacement commit mode would preserve the contract without broadening read authority and would also contain concurrent destination creation.

Explanation
[#1104] requires saving selected slides or splitting a deck by section or by a slide count. crates/engine/src/cmd/split.rs implements file.saveSlidesAs and file.split with these modes. slice preserves the selected slides, their masters, and referenced media. It also preserves used sections and custom shows. The commands write new files and do not modify the open presentation. The code checks output paths and encodes all parts before writing. Engine tests cover selection, ranges, both split modes, refusal without writes, and removal of unused content. The UI adds the requested File-menu and slide-list actions.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within [#1104]. The engine module implements selection and split behavior. The I/O helper supports safe open-file checks. The request and picker changes pass command parameters to the UI. The UI changes add the related dialogs, menu actions, context-menu action, and web downloads. The roadmap entry documents the work. No changed area demonstrates unrelated functionality.

split checks file_len before calling write_file, but write_file commits with std::fs::rename(&tmp, path). A file created after the check can therefore be replaced when overwrite is false. The path can also be redirected if a concurrent process swaps a path component for a symlink between the check and the write.
Use an overwrite-aware write primitive that performs an exclusive, no-replace final creation when overwrite is false, with no-follow handling where supported. Map AlreadyExists to the existing error. Preserve the current temporary-file behavior when overwrite is true.

Left as is: an exclusive no-replace create would need a second write path next to write_file's temp-and-rename, for a gap of milliseconds behind a save dialog. Happy to add it if you want it.

@Faabyy Understood. I won’t press for the extra write path in this PR. The race remains possible, so overwrite: false provides a preflight check, not an atomic no-replace guarantee. This remains a minor limitation, not evidence that an unintended overwrite has occurred.

Resolve the conflicts from the split of lib.rs and dialogs.rs: the save-selected-slides and
split-presentation code now lives in app/files.rs, app/commands.rs and dialogs/body.rs.
Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review notes (comment only). Read the engine side (cmd/split.rs, io.rs, the command registration) and skimmed the egui dialog and menu wiring. Ran it on the PR head built on Linux (CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2), and opened the files it wrote in real PowerPoint (Microsoft Office 16, Windows, COM, files copied to a temp folder, closed without saving).
What ran:
cargo test -p deckcraft-engine --lib split: 12 passed (the six new split tests plus other tests matching "split"). cargo test -p deckcraft-ui-egui --lib -- save_slides split: the tests that matched passed, including web_saves_selected_slides_and_split_parts_as_downloads.
With deckcraft-cli run --sample (8 slides in 3 sections) I ran file.split by section and every 3, and file.saveSlidesAs with "1-3;5", a single slide as .potx and as .ppsx. All nine files open in PowerPoint with no repair prompt, with the expected slide counts and titles: sec-1-Introduction.pptx 2, sec-2-Science.pptx 3, sec-3-In the Field.pptx 3; ev3-1/2/3.pptx 3/3/2; pick.pptx 4 slides. Each part has one design and the 11 layouts. PowerPoint's section list for each part matches what the slides came from (for example ev3-1.pptx has Introduction(2) and Science(1)), and the template and show files open as one slide in the Introduction section.
A second file.split onto the same names is refused with "exists already; pass overwrite: true" and nothing new is written. In a deck with a picture on slide 1, file.split every 1 writes the picture's media only into part 1 (ppt/media has 1 file in part 1, 0 in part 2).
Section names in file names go through file_safe (non-alphanumerics become _, 40 characters), so a section name can't add a path separator.
Not checked: the dialogs and context-menu entry (File > Save Selected Slides As, Split Presentation, Save Slides As in the slide list), which I did not run in the app; custom shows, preserved masters and the web download path beyond the unit test; PowerPoint has no split command, so the file naming is not compared with it.
The dialog moves into its own function like the others, and split.rs names its imports for the strict Clippy set.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)
I read the first hunk: a new split command module is registered, and per the title File gains "save selected slides as a new file" and splitting a presentation, as PowerPoint does through copying slides to a new presentation, or Split by sections. Writing new files from a selection is a data export, so: the new file must carry only what the selected slides use (layouts, masters, themes, fonts, media, notes), not the whole media library (privacy: a split file sent to someone must not contain the other slides' pictures), keep the order, and never overwrite an existing file silently. Splitting into many files (one per section, or every N slides) needs a file naming rule, a limit on the count, and a report of what was written. Hyperlinks to other slides in the split part would dangle: say what happens to them. I did not read the module. Add tests for a selection of two slides (the media of other slides is absent from the new file), a slide that uses a layout shared with others, a split by section, a name collision, and a write failure halfway through a split (the files written so far are reported). Nothing was run.
I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
