Summary

A config hot-reload stopped the old pipelines a fixed 30 seconds after the swap, even while requests that started on them were still open, affecting in-flight streamed responses, connect tunnels etc.

Each pipeline now counts the requests running on it. After a reload, the old pipelines are stopped as soon as the last of those requests finishes. A ceiling, now 10 minutes, still stops them so a long-lived tunnel cannot keep old plugins alive forever. When the ceiling is hit, a warning logs how many requests were still open. A request that starts during the swap moves to the new pipeline rather than holding the old one.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements

    • Requests remain tied to the pipeline handling them through completion, including during hot reloads.
    • Replaced pipelines wait for active requests to finish before stopping, up to a 10-minute limit. If the limit expires, a warning reports how many requests remain open.
    • WebSocket turns that cannot proceed release their associated resources before the connection closes.
  • Documentation

    • Updated reload lifecycle and response behavior guidance to reflect the longer drain window.

Walkthrough

Requests and WebSocket turns hold their selected pipelines through finishers. After a reload, the reloader waits for old pipelines to drain or for the 10-minute default window to expire before stopping them.

Changes: Pipeline reload lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Request pipeline pinning
core/pipeline/context.go, core/pipeline/pipeline.go, core/pipeline/holder.go, core/pipeline/holder_reload_test.go
Pipelines track request holds and signal when they drain. Holder.Run pins requests through Holder.Pin; RunFinish releases the hold after finishers run. Tests cover release behavior and concurrent pinning during reloads.
WebSocket turn pinning
core/listener/forwardproxy/websocket.go, core/listener/forwardproxy/websocket_test.go, core/listener/forwardproxy/websocket_review_test.go
Each WebSocket turn pins its outbound pipeline. If the pipeline cannot carry the socket, its finishers run before the socket closes. Tests check pipeline holds across reloads and after a refused turn.
Reload drain and shutdown
core/reloader/reloader.go, core/reloader/reloader_test.go, cmd/agentop/edit/edit.go, docs/framework-architecture.md, docs/lineage-wire-contract.md
The reloader waits for old pipelines to drain, up to a 10-minute default window, then stops them. It reports remaining request holds when the window expires. Tests check shutdown with drained and held requests; documentation and the deadline comment describe the updated lifecycle.

Explanation

Issue #1624 is directly linked and open. The PR adds atomic pipeline holder counts and releases each hold after RunFinish. Holder.Pin retries when a reload changes the holder, so a request does not pin a drained pipeline. WebSocket turns pin their starting pipeline for the turn lifetime. The reloader waits for Drained() and uses a default 10-minute ceiling. At timeout, it stops the old pipeline and logs the remaining requests count. Tests cover holder release, reload draining, timeout logging, and WebSocket holds.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed implementation files directly support issue #1624. The WebSocket changes implement the issue's named turn-holding path. The reloader and pipeline tests verify the new drain behavior. The documentation changes describe the new drain window and timeout behavior. The cmd/agentop/edit/edit.go change updates a reload deadline comment to describe asynchronous draining and does not add unrelated behavior. No demonstrated change lacks a connection to issue #1624.

Assert that a finished request re-pins to the current pipeline.

TestPipeline_HeldFromRunUntilRunFinish calls h.Pin(pctx) after RunFinish but does not check the returned pipeline. A change that returns the finished request's stale pctx.pinned pipeline would still pass, because the test checks only the replacement pipeline's Held() count. Comparing the returned pipeline with h.Load() catches that change.

This check does not cover the race where Pin loads the old pipeline before a Store. This test calls Store before the final Pin. The concurrent test exercises that race.

Add a test that pins the default drain window.

Every reloader test that builds a Reloader passes WithDrainWindow explicitly. The shared setupWith fixture passes WithDrainWindow(0), and the new shutdown test overrides it with its own window. No test reads drainWindow or asserts the 10-minute default in New. A change to a shorter default would leave the reloader tests passing.

New does not start a watcher or goroutine. A test can call it directly and check the default without calling Start.

Assert the drain-ceiling warning in the timeout subtest.

The timeout subtest checks only shutdownPlugin.held. It does not check the reloader: stopped old pipelines with requests still on them warning or its requests field. Removing that warning, or logging a wrong requests value, would not fail any test in core/reloader.

Capture slog output in this subtest, then assert the warning and its requests value. Install a test handler with slog.SetDefault and restore the previous default in t.Cleanup. Signal a channel when a slog.Warn record with the message reloader: stopped old pipelines with requests still on them arrives, and check that its requests attribute equals tc.wantHeld.

Wait for that channel after <-sp.stopped, not for sp.stopped alone. The warning is written after both Stop calls return, so sp.stopped can close before the record exists. Do not run this subtest in parallel with tests that use the default logger.

Summary

The fix does what it claims. Each pipeline counts the requests pinned to it, from Run until the end of their RunFinish. The reloader now stops each old pipeline on its own once Drained closes, with a 10-minute ceiling. Holder.Pin re-checks the pointer after taking its hold, and the reloader calls Drained only after Store. Together those close the race between a request pinning the pipeline and the reloader counting holds: with Go's sequentially consistent atomics, either the pin sees the new pipeline and moves to it, or the reloader sees the hold. I traced every listener that pins a request (forward proxy request/CONNECT/transparent, reverse proxy, ext_proc headers and body, and WebSocket turns, including the refused, prewarm and socket-teardown paths). Each pairs Run/Pin with a RunFinish, so a leaked hold only delays shutdown up to the ceiling, never forever.

Verification on head 42683365:

  • go vet, plus go test -race -count=3 on core/pipeline and core/reloader: pass.
  • go test -race on the forward proxy WebSocket/reload tests and on extproc: pass. The full core/listener/forwardproxy suite also passes without -race.
  • I wrote a throwaway probe (not pushed): a CONNECT tunnel opened before a Store keeps Held()==1 on the old pipeline, Drained stays open while the tunnel is up, and it closes promptly once the client hangs up. So the CONNECT case from #1624 works end to end, not just the WebSocket case the PR tests.

One design consequence is worth knowing (inline): a CONNECT tunnel or a WebSocket handshake holds the old pipeline for as long as the connection stays open. With clients that keep connections alive, the 10-minute ceiling will be the usual outcome of a reload, not the exception.

Out of scope, already on main: on SIGTERM, cmd/cortex and cmd/cortex-envoy stop the startup outboundPipeline/inboundPipeline variables, not Holder.Load() or any pipelines still draining. After a reload, the startup pipeline is stopped twice and the live one never. The longer window makes the draining case more likely, so it may be worth a follow-up issue.

suggestion: The hold is per pipeline, and the outer pctx of a CONNECT tunnel, or of a WebSocket handshake, holds from Run until the connection closes. With agents that keep connections to their LLM host alive (keep-alive CONNECT tunnels, Codex sockets), nearly every reload will run the full 10 minutes and then log the "requests still on them" WARN.

Two side effects:

  1. Old pipeline sets pile up across rapid reloads. For example, each save of a script folder triggers a reload, and Script.Shutdown is what releases that build's worker. So N edits in 10 minutes leave up to N old Python workers and N lineage tracer providers alive.
  2. The WARN will show up routinely.

I don't think this blocks the PR, since #1624 asks for exactly this trade-off. Consider documenting it next to the WARN or in framework-architecture.md step 8, so operators know a 10-minute linger is expected with open tunnels. Optionally, a later change could treat a tunnel-only hold differently from an in-flight exchange.

nit: The Run doc comment above still ends with "One atomic Load per call." That is no longer true: Pin does at least two loads, plus a retry loop when a Store races it.

Summary

Re-review of 97fa6cb7. The only change since my approval on 42683365 is that commit. It touches docs, comments and one test, and it changes no runtime code. Both points from my last review are addressed:

  • Tunnel/WebSocket holds run the full window: there is now a comment at the WARN in reloader.go, and step 8 of framework-architecture.md says the full window and the WARN are the usual outcome with open connections, and that rapid reloads keep several old plugin sets running. That is what I asked for.
  • Stale Run doc ("One atomic Load per call"): removed. The doc now says Run is h.Pin(pctx).Run(ctx, pctx), which matches the code.

The TestHolder_PinNeverLandsOnADrainedPipeline change is a real improvement. It now also asserts p.Held() > 0 after Pin, so a regression where Pin returns a pipeline it never took a hold on would fail the concurrent test. Before, that test only checked that the pipeline had not been stopped. Separately, the CodeRabbit suggestion to assert that a finished request re-pins to h.Load() is in place (TestPipeline_HeldFromRunUntilRunFinish).

Verification on head 97fa6cb7:

  • go vet on core/pipeline and core/reloader: clean.
  • go test -race -count=5 ./core/pipeline ./core/reloader: pass.
  • go test -race -run 'WebSocket|Reload' ./core/listener/forwardproxy: pass.

The SIGTERM shutdown follow-up from my previous review is still out of scope for this PR.

Summary

Re-review of aff0f639. The only change since my approval on 97fa6cb7 is that commit, and it touches only core/reloader/reloader_test.go. No runtime code changed.

The new check answers CodeRabbit's point about the RunFinish case hanging. Right after RunFinish, it does a non-blocking select on busy.p.Drained() before the blocking <-busy.stopped. That is correct without depending on timing: RunFinish releases its hold through a defer before it returns, and Drained() runs closeIfIdle. So the channel is already closed when the select runs, whether or not the reloader's own Drained() call has happened yet (the CAS shares a single drainSignal). The test is still deterministic.

Verification on head aff0f639:

  • go vet ./pipeline ./reloader: clean.
  • go test -race -count=5 ./pipeline ./reloader: pass.
  • Mutation probe (not pushed): with defer p.release() in RunFinish commented out, the subtest fails in 0.03s with the old pipeline is still held 1 times after the request finished instead of hanging until the drain window. So the assertion catches the regression it is meant to catch.
