Summary

On shutdown, both sidecar binaries stopped the pipelines they built at boot. After a config reload, that stopped those pipelines a second time and left the ones serving traffic running, so their plugins never flushed. Shutdown now goes through the reloader. It stops watching the config, stops the live pipelines, and stops every old pipeline still draining, all within the shutdown deadline. Each pipeline is stopped once, and in cortex this still happens before the cost ledger flushes.

Walkthrough

Reloader now coordinates shutdown of its watch loop, live pipelines, and old pipelines that are still draining. Both Cortex binaries call Reloader.Close during shutdown. Tests cover live and draining pipelines, canceled shutdown contexts, and reloads that finish building after closing begins.

Changes: Pipeline shutdown

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track watch-loop lifecycle
core/reloader/reloader.go
Reloader stores watch-loop cancellation and completion state. Its package comments describe that Close also stops old pipelines that are still draining.

Explanation

Directly linked issue #1662 has three coding objectives, plus an optional run-once guard. (1) Stop the live pipelines at shutdown, not the boot pipelines [#1662]: at the reviewed head, cmd/cortex/main.go and cmd/cortex-envoy/main.go no longer call Stop on the boot pipeline variables. Both now call rld.Close(shutdownCtx). (2) Stop old pipelines still draining after a reload [#1662]: core/reloader/reloader.go at head declares closing, closeCtx, drains (sync.WaitGroup), and cancelLoop/loopDone. The package comment says Close also stops the live pipelines and that old pipelines stop on drain, window expiry, or Close. Prior review read the Close body and the stopWhenUnheld closing branch and found that old pipelines stop with closeCtx on shutdown. (3) Provide Close(ctx) and call it before the cost ledger flush [#1662]: Close(ctx context.Context) is referenced at head. cmd/cortex/main.go calls rld.Close before the ledger flush block, and the updated comment states that order. The optional Pipeline.Stop run-once guard is not added; the issue marks it optional, so its absence does not fail this check. Limits: the Close function body and stopWhenUnheld were not re-read at the current head. The file read was truncated at 16000 bytes, and the inspection budget was used. The prior PASS for those paths is kept because the head struct fields and doc comments match the prior findings. reloader_test.go was not read in source.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed code relates to #1662. core/reloader/reloader.go adds Close, the watch-loop cancellation and completion tracking, the shutdown and commit ordering fields, and the old-pipeline stop conditions. cmd/cortex/main.go and cmd/cortex-envoy/main.go replace direct boot-pipeline Stop calls with rld.Close. The cortex comment is rewritten to describe the new ordering. Per the change summary, the tests in core/reloader/reloader_test.go and the docs in docs/framework-architecture.md cover Close and the new drain stop condition. Those are supporting changes for the same objective. No change found addresses unrelated behavior. The test and documentation files were not read in source during this review.

Cover a blocking live pipeline in the Close context test.

TestReloader_CloseDoesNotOutwaitItsContext blocks only the old draining pipeline. Both live pipelines use emptyPipeline(t). A Close that waits on live pipeline shutdown without honoring ctx still passes. The test name states the broader guarantee, so the live path needs its own case.

Summary

This moves shutdown onto the reloader. Close stops the watch loop, stops the pipelines the Holders actually serve, and cuts every in-flight drain short, so the boot pipelines are no longer stopped twice and the post-reload ones finally flush. That fixes all three problems in #1662. The happens-before on closeCtx (written before close(r.closing), read after the receive) is sound, and both binaries call Close before the ledger flush. I checked out the head and ran go test -race ./reloader/ ./pipeline/ in core/ (-count=5 on the new and drain tests); all pass, and go vet is clean.

One blocking issue: Close is not bounded by its ctx when SIGTERM lands while a reload is still running. It waits on <-r.loopDone unconditionally, and reloadOnce's build() ignores cancellation. A probe test with a 5 s build and a 1 s ctx kept Close blocked for 5.0 s. That contradicts the PR's "all within the shutdown deadline" claim and the second commit's own title. It is also a regression: on base, shutdown never waited on the loop. Details are inline.

must-fix: this wait has no ctx bound, so Close can run past the shutdown deadline whenever a reload is in progress at SIGTERM.

cancelLoop() cancels the ctx that startCtx derives from, so a ctx-aware Init bails out. But watchLoop only returns after reloadOnce returns, and r.build() takes no ctx. In cmd/cortex that includes the script plugin's Configure, which starts its workers on context.Background() with a 5 s DefaultStartTimeout, and any other Configure that does I/O.

I checked it with a probe in core/reloader (head ca0eff1): setupWith, a build that blocks for 5 s, a config write, then Close with a 1 s timeout ctx once build is entered:

zz_probe_test.go:36: Close took 5.003766437s with a 1s ctx
--- FAIL: TestProbe_CloseDuringSlowBuild (5.03s)

This matters most on a local install. There the budget is 1 s and the supervisor kills at superviseStopGrace (3 s), so a stop that lands while an edited script is loading gets SIGKILLed before costLedger.Close(), and the open minute this PR is careful to flush is lost. Base did not have this problem, because shutdown never waited on the loop.

A possible shape:

if r.cancelLoop != nil {
	r.cancelLoop()
	select {
	case <-r.loopDone:
	case <-ctx.Done():
		return // a reload is still building; the process is exiting anyway
	}
}

If you go this way, reloadOnce should also check parent.Err() after Start and before the swap, stop the new pipelines, and return. Otherwise a late commit could do r.drains.Add(1) while the drains.Wait() goroutine below is running, which is WaitGroup misuse, or Store pipelines nobody stops. Please add a test next to TestReloader_CloseDoesNotOutwaitItsContext for the in-flight-build case.

suggestion: this only shows that Close returns. With the ctx already cancelled, a regression that waited a few seconds would still pass. A timing check like start := time.Now(); r.Close(ctx); if d := time.Since(start); d > time.Second { t.Errorf(...) } would fail when Close outwaits its ctx, which is the point of the test. The same check suits the in-flight-reload test asked for above.

Thanks. I'd rather keep timing out of these tests, since a slow CI run could fail a correct build. The new test checks the same behaviour by waiting on events instead: the live pipeline's Shutdown has run while the build is still blocked, so Close didn't wait on it.

Summary

Re-review of 6b28468. This fixes the blocking point from my last review. Close now closes closing first, waits for the watch loop and runs the stops in a goroutine, and returns on ctx.Done(). I re-ran my in-flight-build probe on this head (a 3 s build, a config write, then Close with a 1 s ctx once build is entered). Close returned in 1.0 s, against 5.0 s on ca0eff1. The pipelines the late reload committed were still stopped afterwards, on the expired closeCtx, so nothing leaks. CodeRabbit's three points are also covered. stopCtx sends both the drain-woken stop and the outbound-Start unwind onto closeCtx once closing has begun, and the live stops sit inside the ctx-bounded select. The closeCtx write happens before close(r.closing), and every read follows a receive from it, so the ordering is sound.

I ran go test -race ./reloader/ ./pipeline/ in core/, plus -count=10 on the Close, drain and new StopsOnTheCloseContextOnceClosing tests. All pass, and go vet is clean.

The inline comments are non-blocking. One is a narrower trade-off from the new ordering: during a slow reload, the live pipelines now wait behind the build. One is my earlier test suggestion, still open, plus the regression test for the case this commit fixes. One is a comment nit.

suggestion: with this ordering, a SIGTERM that lands during a slow build() now delays the live pipelines' Stop until the build returns. On a 1 s local-install budget, that can mean after Close has already given up.

The same probe shows it. With a 3 s build and a 1 s ctx, the live outbound pipeline had not been stopped when Close returned. Its Shutdown ran about 2 s later, on an already-expired ctx, alongside costLedger.Close() and pluginStore.Close() in main. Then lineage's tp.Shutdown(ctx) gets no time to export, and session-budget takes its timeout branch and leaves its store open. Base stopped those pipelines straight away. The window is narrow (a stop has to land during a reload's build), and the process is exiting anyway, so I am not blocking on it.

If you want to close it later, stop the live pipelines first and have the commit back off. In reloadOnce, take a mutex, check closing just before the Stores, and if it is closed, stop newIn/newOut on closeCtx instead of swapping. Close would read the holders under the same mutex. That bounds the live stops without waiting on the loop.

suggestion (carried over from the last round): this still only proves that Close returns. The ctx is already cancelled, so a regression that waited a few seconds would still pass. A start := time.Now() and if d := time.Since(start); d > time.Second { t.Errorf(...) } around the call would catch that.

The case this commit actually fixes, Close during an in-flight reload, has no test yet. A builder that blocks on a channel, a config write, Close with a short timeout once build is entered, then an assertion that Close returned within the timeout. After unblocking the build, also assert that the pipelines it committed were stopped. That would pin both halves of the new ordering.

Summary

Re-review of 2f851dd. This commit addresses all three points from my last round. commitMu now orders a reload's commit against Close. Close closes closing and reads the live holders under the lock. A reload that reaches its commit after that stops newIn/newOut on closeCtx instead of storing them. So the live pipelines no longer wait behind a slow build(). Moving r.drains.Add(1) under the same lock also means no Add can race with Close's drains.Wait(). The closeCtx write still comes before close(r.closing), and the back-off path reads it only after observing closing closed, so that ordering holds. The main.go comment is fixed too.

I re-ran my in-flight-build probe on this head (a 3 s build, a config write, then Close with a 1 s ctx once build is entered), 3 runs. Close returned in 1.0 s, with both live pipelines already stopped on a live ctx (on 6b28468 the live outbound had not been stopped yet). The pipelines the late build produced were stopped afterwards on the expired closeCtx and were never stored. On timing assertions: fair enough. The new TestReloader_CloseDuringABuildStopsLiveAndBuiltPipelines uses events, and I checked that it does catch the regression. Against 6b28468's reloader.go it hangs at <-live.stopped. On this head it passes -race -count=50.

go vet ./reloader/ is clean. go test -race ./reloader/ ./pipeline/ and -count=20 on the Close/drain tests all pass. CodeRabbit's new point (stop liveOut and liveIn concurrently) is optional: base stopped them in the same sequence, so it is not a regression.

Summary

Re-review of 762eef3. The only change since my last approval on 2f851dd is that Close now stops liveOut and liveIn concurrently, through a sync.WaitGroup with Go (fine on the modules' go 1.26.10). Before, they stopped one after the other. So a plugin that blocks while shutting down in one direction no longer keeps the other direction's plugins from flushing. That was CodeRabbit's optional point from the last round.

I checked whether running the two Stops concurrently could race on anything the directions share. Every Shutdowner in core/plugins either touches only per-instance state, or guards what it shares. OPA's process-wide SDK singleton is refcounted under singletonMu. The script plugin's package-level worker pool takes p.mu in Release. Each CPEX plugin builds its own PolicyEngine. LIFO order inside each pipeline is unchanged. Neither binary on base relied on outbound finishing before inbound, beyond running them in sequence.

The strengthened TestReloader_CloseDoesNotOutwaitItsContext does catch the regression. With 2f851dd's reloader.go swapped in, it hangs at <-in.stopped (it timed out after 20 s). On this head it passes. go vet ./reloader/ is clean. go test -race ./reloader/ ./pipeline/ passes, and so does -race -count=50 on the TestReloader_Close* tests. The earlier findings remain addressed.

Serialize Start and Close lifecycle state.

Reloader promises concurrent use, but Start publishes cancelLoop and loopDone without the lock that Close uses for shutdown coordination. If Close runs during watcher registration, it can observe both fields as nil, return without cancelling or waiting for the loop, and then let Start launch a watcher after shutdown has begun. Protect the full Start initialization and the corresponding Close reads with a lifecycle mutex. If Close wins before initialization, Start must exit without launching the watcher.
