Addresses two bugs in the forward proxy's CONNECT path - a server-first protocol (SSH, SMTP) sends its banner before the client speaks. With the TLS bridge on, the proxy peeks the client for five bytes to classify TLS vs opaque, but the client sends nothing until it reads the banner, so the two sides wait on each other forever. The peek now carries the same read deadline sniffHost already uses; a short or empty result falls through to the opaque tunnel.
A client that half-closes its send side after writing the request and then reads the reply gets nothing: the opaque tunnel's copy loop closed both halves as soon as either direction's io.Copy returned. Each direction now CloseWrites the receiving side at EOF and only fully closes once both copies finish.
CONNECT requests that inspect client traffic for TLS bridging now avoid waiting indefinitely when no initial data arrives, allowing the connection to proceed promptly.
Tunnels continue relaying upstream responses after the client finishes sending data, preventing replies from being cut off. They also return when the upstream keeps its write side open, rather than waiting indefinitely for it to close.
Server-first responses are delivered promptly, and half-closed connections can continue receiving replies.

Walkthrough
The CONNECT path now bounds the TLS-bridge peek with a read deadline. The tunnel relays half-closes and allows the reverse copy to continue while data arrives. Tests cover server-first banners, reply delivery, streaming replies, and bounded tunnel return.

Summary
Bound the TLS-bridge peek core/listener/forwardproxy/sniff.go, core/listener/forwardproxy/server.go, core/listener/forwardproxy/connect_hang_test.go
The CONNECT path applies and clears a read deadline around the TLS-bridge peek. A test checks that a server-first SSH banner arrives through the tunnel.
Preserve replies after half-close core/listener/forwardproxy/sniff.go, core/listener/forwardproxy/transparent.go, core/listener/forwardproxy/connect_hang_test.go
The tunnel copies both directions concurrently and propagates EOF with CloseWrite when available. It waits for the other copy while data continues, then closes both connections after the drain interval expires. Tests check reply delivery, streaming replies, and bounded tunnel return.
rossoctl/cortex#1549: Adds notifyConn.CloseWrite; this PR adds peekedConn.CloseWrite and uses half-close during tunnel copying.

Explanation
PR #1599 addresses both coding requirements in issue #1544. The CONNECT TLS-bridge peek uses connectSniffTimeout, clears the deadline, and lets short or empty peeks use the opaque path, as shown by the supplied server.go summary and the server-first test. tunnel now half-closes the receiving connection at EOF, waits for the other copy with an idle drain timeout, and fully closes both connections only after both copies finish or the timeout expires. The tests cover server-first banners, direct and peekedConn half-close behavior, bounded teardown, and streaming replies. tunnel still returns both byte counts for tunnel close accounting, and the existing close-row path remains in place for durationMs. The repository could not provide the changed server.go diff, and tests were not executed in this review.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The production changes remain within issue #1544. server.go bounds the CONNECT classification peek. transparent.go preserves half-close behavior and bounded tunnel teardown. sniff.go forwards CloseWrite through peekedConn. The added tests cover these same CONNECT and opaque-tunnel behaviors. No unrelated production or test changes are shown.

- Line 383: Update the copy coordination in tunnel so that when either io.Copy
finishes, the other copy is allowed to complete only for a bounded period; if it
remains blocked, close both connections to unblock it and let tunnel return.
Preserve the existing half-close behavior for normal completion.
- Around line 399-403: Add a CloseWrite method to peekedConn that delegates to
the embedded connection when it supports half-close, falling back to closing the
underlying connection otherwise. This lets the existing CloseWrite type
assertion in the tunnel path preserve half-close behavior for wrapped
connections.

Reviewed against issue #1544 and verified independently: the issue's own reproduction tests — a server-first banner through the bridge, and a half-closed client reading its reply — fail on main and pass on this branch; the full forwardproxy package is green here. The bounded peek, the CloseWrite relay (including through peekedConn), and the drain-deadline-before-full-close all match what the issue asked for, with the teardown tradeoff documented inline.
One procedural note: the branch is BLOCKED against main — #1593 and #1596 moved the same handleConnect region — so it needs a rebase before merge.

Bounding the peek with sniffTimeout fixes the hang, but a server-first protocol now waits the full 5s for its first byte — #1544 suggested ~500ms to make the delay unnoticeable. Consider a shorter dedicated bound here, or a one-line comment justifying 5s for consistency with sniffHost; through the bridge, SSH currently feels broken-then-working.

halfCloseDrainVar as a package-level var is a workable test seam, but it's read on every teardown while tests mutate it — fine while package tests are sequential; worth a comment saying so.

timeout for the second copy, not a fixed total drain limit: track write activity
in both directions and extend the wait while bytes continue flowing, closing
both connections only after the peer has been idle for the full window. Add a
test verifying a reply that streams beyond halfCloseDrainVar completes without
truncation.

This flow is pre-existing. r.Host reaching slog.Debug in forward-proxy: streaming write error lives on main at server.go:2340 (blame points to adf92acf9 from 2026-10-14), untouched by this PR. CodeQL anchors the alert to the shifted line on the merge ref because my changes added lines above the log site; the flagged statement itself is unchanged. The same pattern repeats at ~10 other slog.* "host", r.Host call sites in this file. Filed #1612 to track; dismissing this alert on the PR.

Summary
Addresses two bugs in the forward proxy's CONNECT path - a server-first protocol (SSH, SMTP) sends its banner before the client speaks. With the TLS bridge on, the proxy peeks the client for five bytes to classify TLS vs opaque, but the client sends nothing until it reads the banner, so the two sides wait on each other forever. The peek now carries the same read deadline sniffHost already uses; a short or empty result falls through to the opaque tunnel.
A client that half-closes its send side after writing the request and then reads the reply gets nothing: the opaque tunnel's copy loop closed both halves as soon as either direction's
io.Copyreturned. Each direction nowCloseWritesthe receiving side at EOF and only fully closes once both copies finish.Assisted-By: Claude (Anthropic AI) noreply@anthropic.com
