Test: Check that tunnels behave like direct connections - #1652
This PR adds TestTunnel_BehavesLikeADirectConnection, a table test for tunnel behaviour (#1553). It is a test-only change.
Cases (4):
The server speaks first (an SSH-style banner).
The client half-closes, then reads the reply.
A 32 MiB transfer in both directions. The origin writes all of its data before it reads.
The client sends nothing, then closes.
Paths (5):
A direct connection. This proves each case.
CONNECT with the bridge off.
CONNECT with the bridge on, for a port that it does not bridge.
CONNECT with the bridge on, for this port. Non-TLS bytes go to the opaque tunnel.
HandleTransparentConn over a real TCP pair.
Assertions: on each path, the client and the origin see the same result as on the direct path, before a deadline. The tunnel's close row reports the correct bytesUp and bytesDown.
The PR also removes three tests from connect_hang_test.go, because the table covers the same cases.
Verification
All 20 subtests pass. -race passes. The full package passes.
I put each bug back for a short time to make sure the test catches it:
Added broader coverage comparing direct connections with CONNECT and transparent tunnels across server-first responses, half-closes, simultaneous transfers, idle connections, and client closures. Tunnel tests also check transferred byte counts.
Add a table test for tunnel behaviour (rossoctl#1553). It runs four protocol
shapes over five paths:
- Cases: the server speaks first, the client half-closes and then
reads, a 4 MiB transfer in both directions at once, and a client
that sends nothing and then closes.
- Paths: a direct connection, CONNECT with the bridge off, CONNECT
with the bridge on for another port, CONNECT with the bridge on for
this port, and HandleTransparentConn over a real TCP pair.
The direct path proves each case. Every other path must give the same
result before a deadline, and the tunnel's close row must report the
bytes that crossed in each direction.
When the rossoctl#1544 bugs are put back, the test fails: an unbounded peek
fails "server speaks first" on both bridge paths, and a full close
fails "half-close" on all four tunnel paths.

Explanation
The title names the main change, which adds the tunnel-versus-direct-connection behavior test table (TestTunnel_BehavesLikeADirectConnection). The raw summary and objectives confirm this is the primary intent. The title is concise and specific. It omits the removal of three overlapping tests in connect_hang_test.go, but that detail is secondary.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #1553 has four coding requirements. Each is covered in core/listener/forwardproxy/tunnelbehaviour_test.go, function TestTunnel_BehavesLikeADirectConnection.
Cases (tunnelCases):
Server speaks first: serve writes tunnelBanner; the client reads it. Covered.
Client half-closes then reads: the client calls CloseWrite, then reads the reply "GOT 5 BYTES". Covered.
Large transfer both ways at once: 32 MiB (bigTransfer) in each direction. The client writes in a goroutine while it reads. Covered.
Client sends nothing then closes: wantOrigin "0", wantClient "". Covered.
Paths:
CONNECT with bridge off (viaConnect(nil)). Covered.
CONNECT with bridge on for a port not bridged (bridge port 443). Covered.
HandleTransparentConn over a real TCP pair (tcpPair). Covered.
Assertions:
Each subtest checks the client-observed and origin-observed values against fixed expected strings, under tunnelDeadline. The same expected values apply on every path, including the direct baseline. This matches the issue requirement that each case behave as a direct connection within a short deadline.
Tunnel paths check closed.BytesUp and closed.BytesDown against tc.up and tc.down. This covers the issue requirement for bytesUp/bytesDown.
The PR adds two paths beyond the issue: the direct baseline and CONNECT with the bridge on for the bridged port (portOf). Both extend the required coverage. The bridged-port path targets the #1544 server-first hang.
The failure-mode claims in the PR description (reverting #1544 fixes) are author-reported. This assessment relies on source evidence of the test table and did not run the tests.
The objectives summary states a 4 MiB transfer. The current file uses 32 MiB. The issue does not set a size, so this difference does not affect compliance.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changes are test-only. The diff has two parts:
core/listener/forwardproxy/tunnelbehaviour_test.go is new (+240 lines). It contains the objective's test table. Every case and path maps to #1553.
core/listener/forwardproxy/connect_hang_test.go loses three tests (-133 lines). Their coverage is replaced by the new table:
TestHandleConnect_ServerFirstBannerArrivesPromptly is replaced by the "server speaks first" case on the bridged and unbridged CONNECT paths.
TestTunnel_HalfCloseRelaysTheReply is replaced by the "client half-closes then reads" case. The table runs that case through tunnel() on the CONNECT and transparent paths.
TestTunnel_HalfCloseThroughPeekedConn is replaced indirectly. The table's half-close case on CONNECT with the bridge on runs the peekedConn path end to end. That path is what the removed test checked directly. The replacement is indirect. The author reports that the table catches a full close instead of CloseWrite on all four tunnel paths.
Tests TestTunnel_ReturnsWhenUpstreamNeverHalfCloses and TestTunnel_ReplyStreamingPastDrainCompletes are kept. The tcpPair helper and the bufio, strings, and session imports are not removed from the head file, despite the AI summary. The new file uses tcpPair from connect_hang_test.go, and the head file still defines it. No non-test source file changes.
The removals are tied to the #1553 consolidation. No change at the reviewed head is shown to be unrelated.

Summary
A well-built parity table for #1553. The direct path proves each case before any tunnel path runs. Every case has a deadline, so a hang shows up as a failure and not a stuck test. The close-row bytesUp/bytesDown checks cover the accounting the issue asked for. I checked out the head and ran it: all 20 subtests pass (-count=5), go vet and gofmt are clean, and the bridged "server speaks first" subtests take the expected ~0.5 s (connectSniffTimeout). One suggestion inline, about a transparent-path variant the table doesn't reach yet. It doesn't block merge.

suggestion: The transparent path runs only with TLSBridge == nil, and the origin listens on a random port. So HandleTransparentConn never takes its sniffHost branch or its bridge branch here. That variant still has the #1544 server-first hang. In the bridge block, pc.Peek(5) (transparent.go, around line 236) runs with no read deadline: sniffHost's 5 s Peek(1) times out, its deferred reset clears the deadline, and then Peek(5) blocks until the client sends something. I checked with a throwaway probe, which I did not commit: connectServer + s.TLSBridge = bridgeEngine(t, portOf(origin), nil) + HandleTransparentConn(proxySide, origin) with the "server speaks first" origin. The client was still waiting for the banner when its 10 s deadline fired.
This is outside what #1553 asked for, and the fix is a product change, so it shouldn't block this PR. Two options: add a "transparent, bridge on, port bridged" path, marked t.Skip with a link to a follow-up issue until the deadline fix lands, or open that follow-up issue now so the gap is on record. Either way, the next regression on this path won't slip through the way #1544 did.

Compare the uploaded bytes at the origin, not only their count.
In the "large transfer both ways at once" case, serve returns readCount(c) (line 90), which reports only how many bytes the origin read. The case's wantOrigin is strconv.Itoa(bigTransfer) (line 111). The client-side bytes.Equal check (line 106) verifies the downstream payload only. A tunnel that alters upload bytes without changing their length would pass this case. Have the origin compare the bytes it reads with bigPayload, for example by reading into a buffer and calling bytes.Equal, so the test detects upload corruption.

90:
In the large-transfer bidirectional test, update the origin’s `serve` logic so
it verifies the uploaded payload contents against `bigPayload`, rather than
returning only `readCount(c)`. Preserve the existing client-side downstream
payload check and ensure the test fails if upload bytes are altered without
changing their length.

Summary
The new commit does what it says. With bigTransfer at 32 MiB, and the origin writing its whole payload before it reads, the large-transfer case now catches a tunnel that copies one direction at a time. I checked this locally: I changed tunnel to run the upstream copy and then the downstream copy in one goroutine. "large transfer both ways at once" then failed on all four tunnel paths (so did "server speaks first"), and the direct path still passed. I reverted the change afterwards. The three tests removed from connect_hang_test.go are covered by the table. The bridged CONNECT paths wrap the client in peekedConn, so the half-close-through-peekedConn case is still exercised. On head 2b8480c, go vet and gofmt are clean, the tunnel and CONNECT tests pass with -count=3, and the full package passes.
Earlier review (e7d780a): my suggestion about the transparent path with the bridge on is still open. That path is not in the table, and I don't see a follow-up issue for the unbounded pc.Peek(5) in transparent.go. This doesn't block merge, but please open that issue so the gap is on record. I also agree with CodeRabbit's minor point on line 90: the origin checks only the upload byte count, not the content. One nit inline.

nit: bigPayload is a package-level var, so every test binary for this package now allocates 32 MiB at init, even for -run filters that never reach this test. Each large-transfer subtest also grows an io.ReadAll buffer of at least 32 MiB. This isn't a problem today. If you want to keep it cheap, build the payload lazily (for example with sync.OnceValue), or build it inside the large-transfer case.
