Unknown fields, native records, and 0.4.0 - #1
Conversation
Kiwi data is not self-describing, so generated decoders rejected any message field their compiled schema lacked. Current Figma files carry up to ~200 such fields. With unknown_fields: :runtime_schema, decoders read the schema shipped with the data and skip those fields instead; the default still rejects them.
KiwiCodec.decode/3 takes the schema the data was written with and steps over message fields the generated modules lack, matching the Rustler runtime-schema mode.
Sparse decoders created the module, __kiwi_module__, and field-name atoms from their text for every map they built, taking the VM's atom table lock and hashing the name each time; that was two thirds of decoding large files. kiwi_atom caches them by the static name's address, per scheduler thread over a shared process-wide map, since atoms are never freed.
The :records feature decodes Kiwi data into records Rust code can read, change, and share without building Elixir terms, then encodes them as the sparse maps generated decoders return, optionally only some fields. The record runtime is schema-independent; the schema supplies a definition table and constants naming each definition and field.
Generated record constants now name enum values as well as definitions and fields, and records gain typed getters (record, records, array, str, bool, uint, int, float, enum_value) for code reading them.
An enum variant or field named DEFINITION collided with the definition index constant; definition indexes now live in kiwi_record_definitions.
put_record, put_records, map_record, and map_records update nested records without spelling out the value wrapping.
put_bool, put_uint, put_float, put_str, put_floats, floats, and field_ids let generated code build and rescale records without spelling out KiwiValue variants.
