Log Widget

The Log Widget provides a live view of the HAL log. The information is split up into different channels depending on their category like core, python or gui. The information can be filtered by selection either a specific channel or the all category in the drop-down list in the toolbar of the widget; the label next to it shows the channel currently displayed. The widget does not show channels in which nothing has been logged yet, so new channels may appear while using HAL. Typing the name of a channel into the drop-down list and pressing Enter adds that channel to the list.

The toolbar provides further filter options:

  • The magnifying glass toggles a search bar. Only messages matching the search text are shown; the search options of the search bar allow to enable Exact match, Case sensitive, or Regular expression matching.
  • The checkable buttons Debug, Info, Warning, and Error select which severities are shown. Their state is remembered for the next session. Critical messages are always shown.
  • Mute all unchecks all severity buttons, Show all checks all of them and switches to the all channel.

Everything a Python script or command prints (stdout) as well as Python errors is also written to the python channel. Conversely, messages that the HAL core logs while executing Python code (e.g., errors reported by the Python API) are only shown here and in the terminal, not in the Python Console Widget.
