chore: forward-port 3.9 identity work (#8549 #8552 #8556 #8562 #8564 #8565) to main - #8572
Conversation
) * fix(features): let any authenticated user read installed features GET /features/installed and GET /features/installed/{fullName} required system/features:view. Elsa Studio decides which modules to render from this list, so a user without that grant got a 403, Studio treated it as "nothing installed", and every feature-gated module disappeared -- even ones the user holds permissions for. Both endpoints now declare RequireAuthenticatedOnly(), mirroring GET /identity/me/permissions. Anonymous callers are still rejected. The system/features:view descriptor is kept (and re-described) so roles that already hold it keep resolving instead of being flagged by the startup validator, and the migration guide's mapping row stays valid. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * style(tests): brace single-statement ifs in installed-features authorization tests Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…8552) * feat(identity): revoke the sign-in session on POST /identity/logout Elsa Identity had no way to invalidate a refresh token, so signing out only discarded tokens client-side and a copied refresh token kept working until it expired. Refresh tokens are stateless JWTs, so revocation needs server-side state. Each sign-in now starts a session: refresh tokens carry an elsa:session_id claim, and refreshing carries it over. POST /identity/logout (authenticated, body { refreshToken }) records the session as revoked, and both refresh paths -- the RefreshToken bearer scheme behind /identity/refresh-token and DefaultIdentityRefreshTokenService used by the broker -- refuse every refresh token of that session, including ones it held before its latest refresh. The refresh endpoint answers 401, as for any invalid token. Other sessions of the same user are unaffected. Logout answers 204 for revoked, already-revoked, expired and unrecognised tokens; 400 for a token of this deployment that is not a refresh token, so sending the access token by mistake is not reported as success; 403 for another user's refresh token. Access tokens are not revoked; they stay valid until they expire (15 minutes by default). A denylist would put a store lookup on every request. Revocations are kept until the session's last refresh token would have expired, tenant-agnostic because the check runs before a tenant is resolved. IRevokedSessionStore defaults to memory; EF Core persistence adds a RevokedSessions table via a new RevokedSessions migration for SQL Server, SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL and Oracle. Refresh tokens issued before this change keep working; their session is derived from the token itself. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(identity): index RevokedSessions.ExpiresAt and cover review findings Every revoke prunes expired revocations by ExpiresAt, so RevokedSessions gets an index on it. The unmerged RevokedSessions migration is regenerated for all five providers to include it. Docs now record the DefaultIdentityRefreshTokenService constructor break, that the migration must be applied before upgraded hosts refresh tokens, the RefreshTokenLifetime assumption, and /identity/logout in the module README. Tests cover cross-tenant refresh-token ownership on logout and a revoked session being refused by the broker's local refresh_token grant. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * docs(identity): correct sign-out scope and limits; tidy logout tests Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * test(identity): assert logout succeeds before checking other sessions Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(identity): make session revocation outlive every refresh token it covers Refresh tokens now carry the session's latest refresh-token expiry in elsa:session_exp, carried forward on every refresh, so a revocation made after RefreshTokenLifetime was lowered outlives the longer-lived tokens the presented one was refreshed from. A revocation's expiry never decreases: IRevokedSessionStore.SaveAsync becomes AddOrExtendAsync, and the EF Core store writes it with a conditional update, then an insert that goes back to extending when it loses a concurrent race, instead of replacing the row or failing on the primary key. IAccessTokenIssuer's session-aware overload now takes a SignInSession and has no default implementation, so a custom issuer can no longer compile while silently starting a new session on every refresh. The migration guide records the break. The flaky RefreshAsyncRejectsAccessAndTamperedTokens changed the last signature character, whose two low bits are padding: about one token in sixteen stayed valid, which the test's user provider used to hide by returning no user. It now changes the first signature character. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(authorization): let a definition viewer open the designer (#8553) A role holding only workflows/definitions:view could list definitions but got 403 on every supporting call Studio makes when opening one. The read-only descriptor catalogs (activities, variables, storage drivers, output converters, expression descriptors, activation, incident, log persistence and commit strategies) and GET /resilience/strategies describe what is installed, not anything stored, so they now require an authenticated caller and no permission, mirroring /features/installed. Anonymous callers are still rejected. GET /workflow-definitions/{definitionId}/versions now requires workflows/definitions:view: a definition viewer can already read every version of a definition, so the list discloses nothing further. Deleting and reverting versions are unchanged. The permission descriptors stay in the catalog, re-described, so roles that hold them keep resolving. The migration guide documents the change. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(authorization): keep the activity registry refresh permission-gated (#8553) GET /descriptors/activities?refresh=true rebuilds the activity registry, so it still requires workflows/descriptors/activities:view; the plain read stays authenticated-only. The permission descriptions and the migration guide now say what each permission still guards, that the activity catalog also lists stored workflows marked as usable as an activity, and which designer calls keep their own permission. The catalog tests share their paths, allow an authenticated caller with no permissions, and assert the response body. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(authorization): ignore the registry refresh flag instead of rejecting it (#8553) GET /descriptors/activities?refresh=true only rebuilds the registry for callers holding workflows/descriptors/activities:view. Everyone else gets the current registry with 200, so Studio, which always sends the flag, still opens the designer for a definitions:view-only role while the expensive rebuild stays gated. Permission text and the migration guide say so. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * refactor(authorization): share the permission evaluator lookup and tighten the descriptor catalog tests (#8553) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(authorization): let definition viewers refresh the activity registry (#8553) Publishing updates the activity registry only on the node that handled it, so in a cluster Studio's refresh=true on each load is how other nodes pick up a new workflow-as-activity. Honour the flag for workflows/definitions:view as well as workflows/descriptors/activities:view; other callers still get the current registry. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… data (#8562) * feat(dashboard): gate each dashboard section by the permission of its data (#8561) Every dashboard endpoint required dashboard:view, so a caller who could read workflow instances, the runtime or the logs still could not see the matching dashboard widget. Elsa Studio now shows the Dashboard to every signed-in user and gates each widget by its data, so the API applies the same rule. dashboard:view keeps reading the whole overview. GET /dashboard/overview now requires an authenticated caller only and withholds each section the caller may not read: it comes back with Capability = Unauthorized and no data (runtime and workflowInstances gain a capability field for this). The workflow-trends, recent-activity, needs-attention and workflow-hotspots endpoints answer 403 unless the caller holds dashboard:view or workflows/instances:view. Checks run in the handler with the permission evaluator and allow everything when endpoint security is disabled. Contributions declare the permission of the data they add (DashboardOverviewContribution.Permissions, and Permission on metric cards, panels and findings), so third-party contributions are filtered the same way and the dashboard module keeps no reference to the workflow or diagnostics modules. Anything supplied without a declaration needs dashboard:view. Findings are filtered too, so needs-attention does not leak runtime or diagnostics data to an instance viewer. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(dashboard): skip unreadable contributors and gate trend, activity and hotspot rows (#8561) Contributors declare their overview permissions up front, so a caller who can read none of them no longer triggers their queries. Trend, recent-activity and hotspot contributions carry a permission, undeclared needs dashboard:view. The instances guard is one pre-processor, the default-permission rule one helper, and the overview blanks the deployment names when every section is withheld. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(dashboard): withhold deployment metadata from callers who read nothing Decide 'withheld' from whether the caller can read anything that was returned, and report every section as Unauthorized for such a caller so install status is not disclosed. Limit contributor skipping to the overview call; other endpoints invoke contributors and filter afterwards. Share the permission-header test handler and tighten the dashboard authorization tests. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(dashboard): keep runtime status through an instance store outage and decide withheld by permission The workflow contributor now reads runtime status independently of the instance queries, so a failing instance store yields the runtime section intact and the instances section Unavailable. The provider decides "withheld" from the caller's permissions against the declared and supplied permissions, and reports a readable section whose contributor failed as Unavailable, never Unauthorized. OverviewPermissions now covers everything a contributor adds to the overview (sections, cards, panels). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(dashboard): keep runtime findings when the instance store fails Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(dashboard): merge overview sections by one per-contribution rule Contributions the caller cannot read are ignored; if any readable contribution failed the section is Unavailable with no partial totals; otherwise the readable ones are merged; Unauthorized only when the caller can read none. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * style(dashboard): brace single-statement branches Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…requirements (#8564) * feat(authorization): declare and record "any of" endpoint permission requirements (#8563) EndpointPermissionRegistry mapped an endpoint to exactly one permission, so an endpoint accepting either of two could not be declared or recorded. The four single-purpose dashboard endpoints worked around it with a FastEndpoints pre-processor, which left them invisible to registry readers as needing no grant. RequireAnyPermission((resource, verb), ...) joins RequirePermission on every endpoint base class. RequirePermission is now its one-permission case, so both share the evaluator, the inline policy (401 anonymous, 403 without a matching grant), the registry record and the configure-time SecurityIsEnabled check. The registry records an EndpointPermissionRequirement (AnyOf, never empty, duplicates collapsed), read through the new FindRequirement and AllRequirements. Find and All keep their signatures and still return the permission of every endpoint requiring exactly one; they report nothing for an "any of" endpoint. The endpoint coverage gate accepts the new declaration. workflow-trends, recent-activity, needs-attention and workflow-hotspots declare RequireAnyPermission(dashboard:view, workflows/instances:view), and RequireInstancesAccess<T> is deleted. The dashboard tests that disable security now do so before the host maps its endpoints, as a deployment does, because the flag is read at configuration time like every RequirePermission endpoint. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * refactor(authorization): share the endpoint authorization test host and simplify the permission registry Extract AuthorizationTestHost into Elsa.Testing.Shared and use it from the RequireAnyPermission, Dashboard and descriptor catalog authorization tests. EndpointPermissionRegistry keeps a single dictionary; Find and All are derived from it and document that they omit any-of endpoints. Pin that an empty RequireAnyPermission throws with security enabled and disabled. Make DashboardAccess.InstanceEndpointPermissions a static readonly field. OutputConverterEndpointTests asserts FindRequirement is null: Find now returns null for any-of endpoints too, so FindRequirement is the accurate "no permission" assertion. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(testing): restore the security setting from before the authorization test host started Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… resolver behind (#8565) * test: stop endpoint host tests leaving a disposed FastEndpoints resolver behind UseFastEndpoints() points FastEndpoints' process-wide service resolver at the host's container, and nothing points it away when the host is disposed. Factory.Create only installs a resolver of its own when none is set, so after LogoutEndpointTests disposed its host, CreateUserContractTests failed with ObjectDisposedException depending on test order and parallelism. Host-based test classes now re-point the resolver at a container that outlives the run once their host is disposed, and share a non-parallel collection with the classes that use Factory.Create. Elsa.Workflows.Api.UnitTests had the same latent failure and gets the same fix. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * test: share one FastEndpoints collection and reset the resolver before disposal Review follow-up. The collection definition moves next to the resolver helper and is linked into both test projects, so the rule is stated once and Elsa.Workflows.Api.UnitTests no longer files Factory.Create tests under a collection named for the security flag. Hosts reset the resolver before they stop, so a failing disposal cannot leave it pointing at the host, and the resolver is also set when the test assembly loads, so Factory.Create sees the same resolver whether or not a host ran first. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * test: pin the FastEndpoints resolver cleanup in Workflows.Api and name the shared namespace honestly Review follow-up. The linked helper and collection move out of the Elsa.Testing.Shared namespace, which belongs to the library they cannot live in, and their docs now say which assemblies the rule covers, that a host also has to reset the resolver, and how the resolver differs from the unit-test one. Elsa.Workflows.Api.UnitTests gets the same regression test as Identity, over both of its host classes. Elsa 3 Code Review: REQUEST_CHANGES + HIGH @ 9ef18c2
Code Review, Round 1/4
Scope: forward-port of the 3.9 identity backend (#8549, #8552, #8556, #8562, #8564, #8565) to main. Base is main @ 78c349b, which is also the merge-base and is still main's tip.
Verdict: the port is faithful. Every source hunk is accounted for, the migrations are correct on all five providers, the merge resolutions are right, and every test suite I ran passes. I am requesting changes for one reason: the PR cannot pass the core merge gate at this head. Greptile scored it 4/5 and raised a valid P2, which also exists on release/3.9.0, and six review threads are unresolved. The code fix is small. The rest is replying to and resolving threads.
Required before approval
- Greptile P2: runtime-only callers still query the instance store (
DefaultDashboardProvider.cs:214-220,WorkflowDashboardContributor.GetOverviewAsync).- Verified. Gating happens per contributor.
WorkflowDashboardContributordeclaresRuntimeandWorkflowInstancestogether. - So a caller who holds
workflows/runtime:viewbut notworkflows/instances:viewselects the contributor.GetWorkflowMetricsAsyncthen runs one summary query and five count queries, and the provider throws the result away when it withholds the section. - Nothing leaks. The cost is wasted store work on every overview load for those callers.
- Fix: expose what the caller can read on
DashboardContext(for exampleCanRead(DashboardPermission)). The workflow contributor should skip the instance metrics and return the withheld capability whenInstancesViewisn't readable. Add a provider test asserting zero instance queries for a runtime-only caller. - The same code is on
release/3.9.0. Land the fix there too, in the same change or a sibling PR, so the two branches stay identical. Greptile needs to reach 5/5 on the new head.
- Verified. Gating happens per contributor.
- Resolve all review threads.
mainrequires every conversation to be resolved, and six are open:- Greptile P2: covered by item 1.
- CodeRabbit,
doc/migrations/authorization-model.md:68: "without any sign" is vague. Say "silently, without warning" (and onrelease/3.9.0too), or reply and resolve. - Code quality,
HttpContextPermissionExtensions.cs:17("dereferenced variable may be null"): this is a false positive. The only flagged caller,EndpointSecurity.cs:49, uses(context.Resource as HttpContext)?.GetPermissionEvaluator(), so a nullHttpContextnever reaches the method. Reply and resolve, or addArgumentNullException.ThrowIfNull(context). - Code quality, undisposed
HttpRequestMessage: three threads, inAuthorizationTestHost.cs:72,ResilienceStrategiesAuthorizationTests.cs:85andInstalledFeaturesAuthorizationTests.cs:89. They are test-only. Either useusing var request = …or reply and resolve.
- CI must be green on the final head. At this head,
ubuntu-latestand CodeQLAnalyze (csharp)were still running.
1. Fidelity
Each port commit is a cherry-pick of its source squash-merge on release/3.9.0. I compared normalized patches (git diff of each source commit against its parent, versus the same for the port commit) and the per-file stats.

Net state. In Elsa.Identity, Elsa.Api.Common, Elsa.Dashboard.*, the ConsoleLogs/StructuredLogs/Workflows.Runtime dashboards, Elsa.Resilience, Elsa.UserTasks, Elsa.Testing.Shared, test/unit/Shared and Elsa.Persistence.EFCore/Modules/Identity, the head is byte-identical to the release/3.9.0 tip, apart from these differences:
WorkflowActivationStrategies/List/Endpoint.cs:release-onlyISerializationTypeRegistryalias work, which correctly did not come across. The pre-existingvar response =newspacing ismain's.ExternalAuthentication/Extensions/ServiceCollectionExtensions.cs:mainregistersIIdentityProviderConnectionValidityAssessorasTryAddScoped,releaseasTryAddSingleton. This is pre-existingmaincode that the PR doesn't touch.- Docs:
main's #8571 (B1) and #8567 wording is kept. See the merge resolutions below.
Nothing extra and nothing 3.9-only leaks in.
- The PR's 121 files are exactly the six source PRs' files plus the merge.
- The per-TFM
Microsoft.AspNetCore.TestHostpins inDirectory.Packages.props(8.0.17 / 9.0.17 / 10.0.9) are verbatim from #8549/#8552 and matchmain's TFMs. main's in-repo Studio already modelsDashboardCapabilityStatus.Unauthorized, so #8562's newUnauthorizedcapability doesn't break the Studio client onmain.mainhas no additionalIDashboardContributorimplementations that #8562's per-section permission contract would have missed.
2. Migrations
IDs. All match the description: Sqlite 20260929170710, SqlServer 20260929170901, PostgreSql 20260929171015, MySql 20260929171114, Oracle 20260929171148.
No collision or reordering. On every provider, RevokedSessions is the newest Identity migration, after PerTenantIdentityUniqueness (2026-08-23). main has no Identity migrations of its own after that one.
- Sqlite, SqlServer, PostgreSql and MySql each have 8 migrations (Initial → V3_1 → V3_2 → V3_3 → V3_4 → V3_8 → PerTenantIdentityUniqueness → RevokedSessions).
- Oracle has 5 (V3_3 → … → RevokedSessions).
- In each provider, IDs are unique and in ordinal order.
Designer files and snapshot.
- The migration folders for all five providers (migrations, Designer files and
IdentityElsaDbContextModelSnapshot) are byte-identical torelease/3.9.0. So is the EF Core Identity configuration. - Built a design-time harness that creates each provider's
IdentityDbContextFactorycontext and callsDatabase.HasPendingModelChanges(), without a database. The result wasFalsefor all five providers: four on net10, and MySql on net9 because the harness pins Pomelo 9. - The snapshot matches the model, and nothing is left un-migrated.
3.9 → main upgrade. The migration IDs and model are identical on both branches. A database migrated through 3.9 already has RevokedSessions in __EFMigrationsHistory, so main applies nothing again. A database coming from an older main gets only the new RevokedSessions migration.
3. Interplay with main
#8567 zero-grant none sentinel. Still holds.
DefaultElsaTokenServiceon the head ismain's #8567 version plus #8552's session claims.PermissionClaims(context.Permissions)is still emitted, now followed byclaims.AddRange(tokenUseClaims).- Other #8567 files are unchanged against
main:DefaultApiKeyProvider,AdminApiKeyProvider, the UserTasks resolver, AI and Studio filters, andPermissionNames. - #8567's tests run and pass. They sit alongside #8552's session tests in
DefaultElsaTokenServiceTestsand shareCreateOptions().
#8571 B1 docs. Survived. authorization-model.md keeps main's statement that permission changes take effect on the next token refresh or expiry, with stamp-based revalidation planned for 3.10, and adds #8552's logout sections. identity-tenancy-security.md keeps the sentinel paragraph in main's wording ("remains unknown rather than a known empty set") and adds Signing Out.
Fail-closed IdentityPermissionContext and GET /identity/me/permissions. Untouched. The PR changes nothing under src/studio or Elsa.Identity/Endpoints/Me.
Overlap with open #8584 (refresh by sub). A real conflict.
- A trial merge of #8584's head (8280202) onto this head conflicts in six files:
RefreshToken/Endpoint.csDefaultIdentityRefreshTokenService.csLegacyRefreshToken.cs(both PRs add this file)DefaultElsaTokenServiceTests.csDefaultIdentityRefreshTokenServiceTests.csLegacyIdentityEndpointTests.cs
- Whichever PR merges second must keep both of these:
- From #8552: in
DefaultIdentityRefreshTokenService,SessionRevoker.GetSessionplus theIsRevokedAsynccheck happen before user resolution. Both refresh paths passsessionintoIssueTokensAsync(user, session, …), and the endpoint usesSessionRevoker.FindSession. - From #8584's Round 3 design:
RefreshTokenSubject.FindUserIdrejects a missing, blank or conflictingsub/NameIdentifier. The user is resolved by id, and the endpoint answers 401 rather thanLoginResponse(false).
- From #8552: in
- #8584's 401 matches #8552's documented "same 401 as an invalid token" for revoked sessions, so the contracts agree. Only the code needs merging.
- The second PR should also run both sets of refresh tests together, so that a revoked session is still refused after the
sublookup.
4. Retro findings (#8574–#8583)
Nothing reintroduced. The code that every issue cites at 9fbbef9 is identical on this head, apart from the #8567 sentinel lines, which came later. All open issues stay exactly as filed, and nothing is partly fixed. Per issue:
- #8574 (F1, refresh by name): still open on this head (
FindByNameAsync(User.Identity!.Name!)). The fix is #8584, so see the overlap above. - #8575 (B1, stamp docs): closed, and
main's corrected text is preserved. - #8576 to #8583: unchanged from release, so their checklists apply to
mainunchanged:- #8576: stamp enforcement
- #8577:
Elsa.Testing.Sharedheader handler and TestHost dependency, now also onmain - #8578: registry rebuild throttling
- #8579: describe-time UI options
- #8580: maintainability follow-ups
- #8581: the
user-tasks:managerrole - #8582: role and permission claims in refresh tokens
- #8583: constant-time admin key comparison
5. Build and tests (local, at 9ef18c2, net10.0)
| Project | Result |
|---|---|
| Elsa.Identity.UnitTests | 228 / 228 passed (matches claim) |
| Elsa.Api.Common.UnitTests | 108 / 108 passed (matches claim) |
| Elsa.UserTasks.UnitTests | 110 / 110 passed (matches claim) |
| Elsa.Dashboard.Api.UnitTests | 112 / 112 passed |
| Elsa.Workflows.Api.UnitTests | 73 / 73 passed |
| Elsa.AI.Host.UnitTests | 52 / 52 passed |
| Elsa.ExternalAuthentication.UnitTests | 205 / 205 passed |
| Elsa.Resilience.Core.UnitTests | 96 / 96 passed |
| Elsa.ExternalAuthentication.IntegrationTests (includes the revoked-session store contract tests) | 181 / 181 passed |
| Elsa.Resilience.IntegrationTests | 14 / 14 passed |
There were no skips and no build errors. Nothing under src/studio changed, so I didn't rerun the Studio suites.
Merge resolutions (git show --cc 9ef18c20). All correct:
authorization-model.mdandidentity-tenancy-security.mdcombine both sides, as described in section 3.DefaultElsaTokenService.cskeeps #8567'sPermissionClaimsand #8552'stokenUseClaimsand session claims.DefaultElsaTokenServiceTests.cskeeps both test sets.- In
FastEndpointsResolver.cs,Reset()ismain's (identical torelease's), and #8565's added remarks are kept.
6. Maintainability
- Because the port is verbatim, it inherits the open items in #8580. That is acceptable for a forward-port: they are tracked for 3.10 and should be fixed on
main, not diverged here. - Non-blocking follow-up.
mainnow carries in-repo MongoDB and Dapper Identity persistence undersrc/extensions/persistence. Neither registers anIRevokedSessionStore, so they fall back to the in-memory store: single node, lost on restart.- These projects are
IsPackable=falseonmaintoday, so nothing ships with the gap yet. - Before they ship, they need a persistent store. That means a Mongo collection with an
AddOrExtendthat keeps the later expiry, and for Dapper a FluentMigrator table. - Alternatively, the "custom persistence provider" sentence in

Elsa 3 Code Review: REQUEST_CHANGES + HIGH @ 989065d
Code Review, Round 2/4
Reviewed the delta since 9ef18c2: the two fix commits (5317647, 989065d) and the main merge e289476 (#8584 and #8585). Main tip b6447e3 is fully merged. The refresh-token reconcile is correct, the nits are fixed, and the dashboard fix works and fails closed. One thing blocks the merge: the fix breaks a public record that already shipped. The 3.9 twin of this PR (#8589) has the same problem, and Greptile flags it there. Both branches should take the same fix so later forward-ports stay clean.
Blocking
1. DashboardContext.CanRead breaks a public record that shipped in 3.8.
DashboardContext is public in Elsa.Dashboard.Abstractions and has shipped with five positional parameters since 3.8.0. Adding CanRead as a sixth positional parameter removes the five-argument constructor and the five-value Deconstruct. An extension compiled against 3.8 or 3.9 then throws MissingMethodException at runtime. AGENTS.md says to preserve public APIs unless the task needs the change, and this one doesn't. Make it an init-only property on the record body instead:
public record DashboardContext(
DashboardRange Range,
bool IncludeSystem,
CancellationToken CancellationToken,
string? TenantId = null,
string? EnvironmentName = null)
{
/// <summary>
/// Whether the caller may read data guarded by a permission, with the dashboard's default rule already applied
/// (<c>dashboard:view</c> reads everything, and data with no declared permission needs it). It only tells a
/// contributor which queries it can skip; the provider still filters what the contributor returns.
/// <c>null</c> means unrestricted.
/// </summary>
public Func<DashboardPermission?, bool>? CanRead { get; init; }
}and in DefaultDashboardProvider.CreateContext, write new(range, includeSystem, cancellationToken, EnvironmentName: environment.EnvironmentName) { CanRead = canRead }. The tests' _context with { CanRead = ... } keeps compiling. I tried this on the 3.9 branch: it builds and all 114 Dashboard tests pass.
2. Document the new contributor hook.
CanRead is a new public extension point, and AGENTS.md requires public API changes to be documented. The doc comment above covers the API. Also add one sentence to the "Modules that add to the dashboard" paragraph in doc/migrations/authorization-model.md: a contributor can check DashboardContext.CanRead to skip queries for data the caller can't read, and null means unrestricted.
3. Drop the GetFindingsAsync guard, which the shipped API never reaches.
GET /dashboard/needs-attention has RequireAnyPermission(dashboard:view, workflows/instances:view). So every caller that reaches GetFindingsAsync through the API can read instances, and CanReadInstances always returns true there. The guard only helps someone calling IDashboardProvider directly, and no test covers it: remove it and the suite still passes, as Greptile showed on #8589. Remove it rather than add a test for a path the shipped API never takes. Keep the overview guard, where the runtime-only case is real.
4. Resolve the new CodeRabbit thread (doc/migrations/authorization-model.md:74, the same sentence in doc/wiki/identity-tenancy-security.md:78). It's right. "At most RefreshTokenLifetime after the upgrade" holds only if the operator doesn't lower the lifetime during the upgrade, because pre-upgrade tokens keep their own exp. Suggested wording: "stay valid until their own expiry, at most the refresh-token lifetime they were issued with". The text was ported unchanged from 3.9, so fix it here and carry the same sentence to 3.9 as a docs follow-up. It's not a 3.9 blocker.
Verified
Dashboard skip (Greptile P2 from Round 1).
- Fails closed. The skip only saves work.
DefaultDashboardProviderpasses the samecanReadit filters with, andMergeSectionstill decides readability. So a wrong or missingCanReadcan at worst cost extra queries; it can't expose data.nullfalls back to querying, which matchesDashboardAccess.WithDefault(null)(unrestricted). - Empty section. For a runtime-only caller, the overview returns
Runtimeplus an emptyWorkflowInstances.MergeSectionsees a supplied section the caller can't read and reports itUnauthorized, as documented. Leaving the section out (the first attempt, in 5317647) would have reportedAvailablewith zero counts. The inline comment explains this. - The tests mean something. I ran both controls on the identical 3.9 code. Reverting the contributor fails both new tests. Leaving the section out fails the provider test and the existing
WithFailingInstanceStore_...theory. The store returns 99 for counts, soRunning == 0really shows nothing was queried. The contributor test and the provider test overlap heavily. Keeping only the provider test would be enough, but this is not blocking. - Simple enough. One private predicate, one early return, and a context property. Once the property moves off the positional list (item 1), it's easy to maintain.
Nits.
- The migration note now reads "without warning".
using varis on all threeHttpRequestMessagehelpers:AuthorizationTestHost,ResilienceStrategiesAuthorizationTests, andInstalledFeaturesAuthorizationTests. Each is nowasyncand awaits the send, so the request outlives the call. No caller reusesHttpContentafter the send.- The
HttpContextPermissionExtensions:17null warning is a false positive. The parameter is a non-nullableHttpContextwith nullable reference types enabled solution-wide. The thread reply's reason ("the only caller uses?.") is wrong, though: there are five callers.EndpointSecurityuses?., and the other four (DashboardAccess,ConnectionEndpointSupport, and two Workflows.Api endpoints) pass a non-nullHttpContext. The conclusion holds. No change is needed.
Refresh-token reconcile with #8584. I compared the PR head with main for all six refresh files.
RefreshTokenSubject.csis identical to main. It returns null when the sub/NameIdentifier is missing, blank, or conflicting./identity/refresh-tokenendpoint. It keeps main'sFindUserId, which returns 401 on null, and main'sFindByIdAsync, which returns 401 if no user is found. It addsSessionRevoker.FindSessionand callsIssueTokensAsync(user, session, ...). The revoked-session check runs in the refresh scheme'sRejectRevokedSessionAsync(IdentityTokenOptions), so it fails the request before the handler looks up the user.DefaultIdentityRefreshTokenService.IsRevokedAsyncruns beforeRefreshTokenSubject.FindUserIdandFindByIdAsync, and the session goes intoIssueTokensAsync.DefaultElsaTokenService. It keeps main'ssubcomment andPermissionClaims, and adds the session claims.- Tests. No test method on main is missing from the head. The only removed lines move
IssueTokensAsyncstubs to the session overload. The head adds the session tests (IssueRefreshTokenCarriesTheSession*,RefreshAsyncContinuesTheSessionOfTheRefreshToken,RefreshAsyncRejectsARefreshTokenOfARevokedSession,RefreshAsyncCarriesALegacyRefreshToken...) alongside #8584's subject tests. - #8585 files. No file from #8585 differs between main and the head, so it came in unchanged.
Threads. All six Round 1 threads are resolved. The CodeRabbit thread in item 4 opened after the push and is still unresolved.
Local run. Elsa.Dashboard.Api.UnitTests passes 114/114 at this head.
Merge gate
core needs APPROVE + HIGH, green CI and Greptile 5/5 on the tip.
- Review: REQUEST_CHANGES + HIGH (items 1–4).
- CI at 989065d:
ubuntu-latest(build and tests) and one CodeQLAnalyze (csharp)job were still running when I checked. Everything else passed, andrun-affected-testswas skipped. - Greptile: 5/5 on 989065d. Greptile raised the same binary-compatibility issue against identical code on #8589 (4/5), so I'm treating it as blocking here too. A fresh Greptile 5/5 is needed on the new tip.
- Threads: 1 unresolved (CodeRabbit, item 4).

Elsa 3 Code Review: APPROVE + HIGH @ c228bc2
Code Review, Round 3/4
The only change since Round 2 is c228bc2, a single commit on top of 989065d. Main tip b6447e3 is still fully merged. The commit resolves all four Round 2 items, and the change is the same as the one on #8589 (3.9 review).
Round 2 items
1. Binary compatibility: fixed, checked against the shipped package.
DashboardContext keeps its five positional parameters again, and CanRead is now an init-only property on the record body. I compared the public surface of DashboardContext in three builds: the Elsa.Dashboard.Abstractions 3.8.4 package from nuget.org, release/3.9.0, and this head.
- 3.8.4 and release/3.9.0 are identical.
- This head only adds
CanRead: the property,get_CanRead, andset_CanRead(init). The constructor(DashboardRange, bool, CancellationToken, string = null, string = null)andDeconstruct(out DashboardRange, out bool, out CancellationToken, out string, out string)are unchanged. - Runtime check: I compiled a small consumer against the 3.8.4 DLL; it constructs with five arguments, deconstructs, uses
with, and compares. It runs unchanged against this head's DLL. As a control, the same consumer throwsMissingMethodExceptionagainst the old positional-parameter build (5090663).
2. Documentation: done.
- XML doc: the doc comment on
CanReadsays it carries the dashboard's default rule, that it only tells a contributor which queries it can skip, that the provider still filters, and thatnullmeans unrestricted. That matches the code. - Migration guide: the new sentence ("A contributor can check
DashboardContext.CanReadto skip queries for data the caller cannot read;nullmeans unrestricted") is accurate. - Optional nit: the sentence sits between "declare the permission of their data" and the
OverviewPermissionsexplanation. It would read better at the end of that paragraph, after the reader knows how contributors declare permissions.
3. Findings guard: removed. GetFindingsAsync is back to its original form, and the overview guard stays.
4. Refresh-token wording: fixed in both the migration guide and the wiki. The new text says tokens stay valid "for the remaining time under their issued expiry, which can outlast the current RefreshTokenLifetime if that setting was lowered during the upgrade". That's accurate: pre-upgrade tokens carry no session claims, and the lifetime validator checks only exp. CodeRabbit confirmed and resolved the thread.
What the CanRead default means
nullis unrestricted, not fail-closed. AnullCanReadmeans "unrestricted":CanReadInstancesreturns true and the contributor queries, which is the 3.8 behaviour. This is the right default. Anyone still using the old five-argument constructor never setsCanRead, and that includes extensions, custom providers and tests. Ifnulldenied, those callers would silently get empty instance sections even when the caller may read them.- Where fail-closed lives. Fail-closed comes from
DefaultDashboardProvider, not from this property. The provider filters every section with the samecanReadit passes in, so a missing or wrongCanReadcan only cost queries, never expose data. - Construction sites. The only production construction of
DashboardContextin core isDefaultDashboardProvider.CreateContext, used byGetOverviewAsyncandGetNeedsAttentionAsync, and both setCanRead = canRead. That value isDashboardAccess.WithDefault(query.CanRead).- Every dashboard endpoint fills
query.CanReadfromDashboardAccess.CreateReadCheck(HttpContext). - That check returns true for
workflows/instances:viewand fordashboard:viewcallers. - It also returns true for everyone when endpoint security is disabled.
- So no caller who may read instances is skipped.
- Every dashboard endpoint fills
- Other contexts. The trend, list and hotspot contexts are separate types and don't carry the property.
Tests still catch regressions
The Dashboard suite passes 114/114 on this head. I applied five mutations and confirmed each one is caught:
| Mutation | What catches it |
|---|---|
| Revert the contributor guard | Both runtime-only tests |
Provider stops setting CanRead |
The provider runtime-only test |
| Leave out the empty instance section | Both runtime-only tests plus the existing failing-store theory |
Treat null as deny |
WorkflowContributor_WithFailingInstanceStore_KeepsRuntimeAndReportsInstancesUnavailable |
Skip whenever CanRead is set |
The failing-store theory |
Non-blocking: the two over-hiding mutations are caught only by failing-store tests. Consider adding a provider-level test for a caller with workflows/instances:view that asserts the real counts come through.
Branch parity
- c228bc2 and #8589's 40d54a4 change the same lines.
- The three dashboard source files and the two test files are byte-identical between the two heads.
- The two DLLs expose the same
DashboardContextsurface.
Threads
All 7 threads are resolved. The HttpContextPermissionExtensions correction is posted and accurate: there are five callers, one uses ?., and four pass a non-null HttpContext.
Merge gate
core needs APPROVE + HIGH, green CI and Greptile 5/5 on the tip.
- Review: APPROVE + HIGH @ c228bc2.
- CI at c228bc2: all checks green, including
ubuntu-latest(build and tests), all CodeQL jobs, the pack jobs, GitGuardian and CLA.run-affected-testswas skipped, as on earlier rounds. Merge state is CLEAN. - Greptile: 5/5 on c228bc2, with no outstanding findings.
- Threads: 0 unresolved.
- The gate is met at this head.

release/3.9.0: #8589. Mongo/Dapper revoked-session follow-up: #8588 (3.10).Code Review R2
CanReadis now an init-only property on theDashboardContextrecord body. The five positional parameters (and therefore the 3.8 constructor andDeconstruct) are unchanged.CreateContextsetsCanReadvia an object initializer. TheGetFindingsAsyncstore skip is removed (/dashboard/needs-attentionalready requiresdashboard:vieworworkflows/instances:view); the overview skip stays. The hook is documented on the property and in the migration guide.Pre-upgrade refresh tokens stay valid for the remaining time under their issued expiry, not "at most
RefreshTokenLifetimeafter the upgrade" (that bound is wrong if the lifetime is lowered during the upgrade). Same wording on #8589.Design decisions
ClaimsPermissionService.nonesentinel is fix(identity): emit a permissions claim for users with zero grants #8567, already on main.POST /identity/logout+RevokedSessions). Studio's OIDC logout-as-POST is PR B (#1081).Conflicts resolved on the #8584 main merge
In the six refresh files: kept this PR's revoked-session check (before the user lookup) and the session passed into
IssueTokens, and #8584'sRefreshTokenSubject.FindUserId(401 on a missing, blank or conflictingsub/NameIdentifier). All tests from both sides are kept.Migration IDs (not regenerated)
