Purpose

Port elsa-studio release/3.9.0 identity and permission work into consolidated src/studio on elsa-core main. Production gating stays on fail-closed GET /identity/me/permissions (IdentityPermissionContext), not 3.9's claims-based ClaimsPermissionService.

Closes elsa-workflows/elsa-studio#1107
Closes elsa-workflows/elsa-studio#1111

Those two issues live in elsa-studio, not this repository. GitHub will not auto-close them from an elsa-core PR; they should be closed manually after this merges.

This is PR B of the F4 split. PR A (#8572) has merged into main (8d88d04f). This branch merged that commit so CI runs against A's logout, RevokedSessions, and dashboard backends.

Do not start leftover Studio UX ports here (#1077, #1090, #1094, #1098). That is PR C (#8587).

Scope

  • New feature
  • Bug fix (behavior change)

Source PRs

Ported (this PR)

Source Title Status
#1075 3.9 identity & access polish ported (adapted) onto IdentityPermissionContext. Session gate, sign-in busy state (4 LoginChooser tests), 12 role-editor advanced-grant tests, 2 ExtAuth wildcard HasAsync tests, Refit rename, AUTHENTICATION_ARCHITECTURE hunk (already identical to 3.9). ClaimsPermissionService is not ported (ruling).
#1076 Hide in-page actions the user cannot perform ported (PermissionView, workflow/labels/secrets action gates, UserPermissionsExtensions).
#1080 test remaining permission-gated actions ported (WorkflowActionPermissionTests).
#1081 OIDC sign-out to the app bar ported as POST-only + antiforgery + #8585 LocalReturnPath/SafeRedirectUri. Logout form action is PathBase-aware (HostedAuthenticationPaths.LogoutFormAction).
#1088 persist-component-state tag ported (_Host.cshtml + HostAuthenticationConfigurationTests).
#1092 one access-denied presentation ported, including in-page connection-editor gate.
#1093 landing-page redirect to first accessible page ported. The stock dashboard never triggers the fallback; that is intended #1103 behaviour.
#1100 revoke the session server-side on sign-out ported. Studio POSTs /identity/logout. The backend route is on main via #8572.
#1101 / #1102 timer-callback helper already on main / BlockingTimerCallback ported.
#1103 open the dashboard and gate widgets ported. Index.razor.css empty-cell rule, FeatureCatalogTests, blueprint + 007 PRD access hunks. Widget data sections use #8572 backend permissions. A workflows/runtime:view-only user already loads the overview for the runtime chip; the stale "no widget ⇒ request nothing" sentences in the blueprint and 007 PRD were corrected.

Excluded / adapted (with reason)

Item Reason
ClaimsPermissionService Ruling: fail closed on /identity/me/permissions.
FeatureCatalog short-name / companion-catalog matching Main matches RemoteFeatureAttribute.Name to FullName. The ported FeatureCatalogTests use FullName (Elsa.DefaultOnly), not the 3.9 short-name matcher.
#1077, #1090, #1094, #1098 Follow-up PR C (#8587) — ported there.
#1089 Ported in PR C (#8587) (Roles / Role editor / Connection editor waits). B already has the ElsaIdentitySignOutTests consumer those waits attach to.
#1096 Ported in PR C (#8587) (PopoverTestExtensions.OpenMenu) once B brought in the workflow permission menu tests.
#1097 Ported in PR C (#8587) (picker TransformOrigin + MenuPopoverAssert). B already has AppBarUserMenuTests.
Abstract IFeatureService.IsInitialized Restored as a default interface member (=> false).
B's earlier LocalReturnPath Discarded. #8585's algorithm and SafeRedirectUri won the merge.

Design decisions

  1. Fail closed. IdentityPermissionService maps 401/403/unavailable/timeout/exception to UserPermissions.FromGrants([]).
  2. One permission source. ExtAuth reads IPermissionService. Old ExtAuth names are gone, not aliased.
  3. Webhooks * admin. Studio still gates on http/webhooks:view. The backend catalog advertises that resource so * administrators receive it.
  4. Logout endpoint. On main via chore: forward-port 3.9 identity work (#8549 #8552 #8556 #8562 #8564 #8565) to main #8572. This branch merged 8d88d04f.
  5. OIDC PathBase. Logout form action is HostedAuthenticationPaths.LogoutFormAction(BaseUri). AddOpenIdConnectAuth calls AddControllersWithViews() so [ValidateAntiForgeryToken] is registered. Elsa Identity navigates with ToAbsoluteUri("login").
  6. Permission cache contract (R4/R5). IdentityPermissionContext is the single owner of IPermissionSnapshotCache. Invalidate and check-and-store publish a (generation, snapshot) pair under one lock. An overtaken load is retried at most three times, then Unavailable is returned without being cached. Environment switch raises IPermissionRefreshSignal (Core scoped, no dependencies). A silent JWT refresh raises it only when the refresh failed, or when the sub or permissions claim changed. PermissionTrackingComponentBase, NavMenu, UserAdministrationAccessBoundary, and RoleAdministrationAccessBoundary subscribe to Changed. The access boundaries keep mounted content while re-checking, show the spinner only on first load, coalesce a Changed that arrives mid-check, and pass view-only CanCreate/CanUpdate/CanDelete until the new access result arrives.
  7. Sign-out fail-safe. If clearing stored tokens fails twice, the service logs and stays on the page. It does not navigate to login with the token still present.
  8. Hosts without Security. Match 3.9: missing IPermissionService uses UserPermissions.Unknown. The CustomElements host runs in this Unknown mode.
  9. run-affected-tests. pr.yml NUKE Test already runs Studio tests.

Studio public API release notes

  • Direct OIDC logout is POST-only: GET /authentication/logout does not sign the user out. The hosted form posts to HostedAuthenticationPaths.LogoutFormAction(baseUri) so a PathBase such as /studio/ is preserved.
  • AddOpenIdConnectAuth calls AddControllersWithViews(), not AddControllers(). The logout action's [ValidateAntiForgeryToken] filter is registered only with the MVC view features.
  • Permission cache: IPermissionSnapshotCache.Invalidate drops the snapshot then raises Changed. IPermissionRefreshSignal is the no-dep scoped notifier. JwtTokenProvider raises it only after a failed refresh or a sub/permissions claim change. GetAsync caps overtaken reloads at three and returns an uncached Unavailable snapshot (fail closed).
  • DefaultEnvironmentService now takes optional IEnumerable<IPermissionRefreshSignal> instead of IEnumerable<IPermissionSnapshotCache>. The previous two-argument constructor that accepted the cache enumerable is gone.
  • JwtTokenProvider gained an IEnumerable<IPermissionRefreshSignal> constructor parameter; the original four-argument constructor remains and passes an empty set.
  • ElsaIdentitySignOutService.LoginPath is obsolete. Sign-out uses NavigationManager.ToAbsoluteUri("login").PathAndQuery.
  • Refit: IExternalAuthenticationConnectionsApi → IExternalAuthenticationConnectionManagementApi; IExternalIdentityLinksApi → IExternalIdentityLinkManagementApi.
  • ExternalAuthenticationPermissions values now use {resource}:{verb}.
  • IFeatureService.IsInitialized remains a default interface member.

No data migration is required.

R5 follow-up

Addressed the open Greptile P1 on a244d07eb in one push (c937a27a7). No force-push. Scope stayed on B2 and that thread.

  1. B2. Users and Roles access boundaries still keep ChildContent mounted and coalesce a mid-check Changed. While a re-check is in flight they pass a view-only access copy so Save/Delete cannot run on discarded grants. Tests: Render_WhenChangedArrivesDuringACheck_KeepsEditsAndHonoursTheQueuedRefresh now asserts create:False during the blocked reload and that the draft survives.
  2. Thread 4174421427 replied and resolved.

CI on c937a27a7 then failed the User mid-check test CodeRabbit flagged (Calls expected 3, actual 2, run 37146137227). c67ff78d0 waits inside WaitForAssertion for Calls == 3, an empty Results queue, create:False, and no spinner on both User and Role tests.

Environments and JWT refresh raise a no-dep IPermissionRefreshSignal
instead of taking IPermissionSnapshotCache, so Security plus
Environments can resolve. Invalidate bumps a generation token, drops
the snapshot, then raises Changed so PermissionView and NavMenu
re-fetch after sign-in, environment switch, and silent refresh.
Sign-out stays on the page when token clear fails.

Elsa 3 Code Review: REQUEST_CHANGES + HIGH @ 1572857

Code Review, Round 3/4

Scope: core#8586 @ 1572857d, base main 8d88d04f (includes #8572), merged in via b302ee38. Since Round 2 (7b1c75ca): 28 files, +1412/−119. PR B of the F4 Studio forward-port.
Design reviewed against: the release lead's ruling. Port onto main's fail-closed IdentityPermissionContext (GET /identity/me/permissions).

Summary

Good progress. Both Round 2 blockers are fixed in substance:

  • The Security + Environments hang is gone. I re-ran my Round 2 repro with the modules' real registrations; it resolves at once in two scopes.
  • What re-renders no longer depends on DI construction order. I re-ran the zero-grant-after-admin repro with a PermissionView constructing the cache first; the admin action disappears.

The fidelity gaps are closed, CI is green with all 17 Studio test projects, and #8585 and #8572 survived the merge intact.

This is Round 3 of 4, so every remaining blocker below is listed with the exact change and the test that should prove it. There are five, and all are small:

  1. The refresh signal is a process-wide singleton, so on Blazor Server one user's token refresh or environment switch invalidates every user's cache (3.1). One line fixes it.
  2. The generation token has three race and stale-return holes (3.2).
  3. The Users and Roles access boundaries never re-resolve (3.3).
  4. The NavMenu hook is untested (3.4).
  5. The "real expired-JWT" test doesn't use its JWT (3.5).

Gate: Greptile 4/5, and 14 threads are open (section 6).

1. Claim-by-claim verification

# Claim Verdict Evidence
1 DI cycle broken by IPermissionRefreshSignal; IdentityPermissionContext is the only cache owner True
  • DefaultEnvironmentService and JwtTokenProvider now take only the signal. The cache subscribes to the signal and to AuthenticationStateChanged.
  • My repro (AddCoreInternal + AddRemoteBackend + AddEnvironmentsModule + AddSecurityModule) resolves IEnvironmentService and IPermissionSnapshotCache in two scopes at once. In Round 2 it never returned.
  • CombinedEnvironmentsAndSecurityHost_ResolvesWithinTimeout passes.
  • But the singleton lifetime is wrong (3.1).
2 Generation token; Changed after clear; components follow Changed; stale load not stored; hook tests fail when their hook is removed Mostly true
  • Construction order fixed (probe above).
  • No leak: after 100 disposed scopes plus one live scope, the singleton holds exactly 1 subscriber. Dispose unsubscribes in the context, the tracking base and NavMenu.
  • Handlers marshal through InvokeAsync, so raising Changed from another thread is safe for the UI.
  • Revert checks H1–H7 are caught (section 5). NavMenu is not (3.4).
  • The generation logic has the holes in 3.2, and the access boundaries don't follow Changed (3.3).
  • WASM External Authentication: TokensChanged → NotifyAuthenticationStateChanged → the cache's auth subscription → Changed. Covered by composition; the last step is tested by PermissionView_AfterSignInChangesToZeroGrant_HidesTheAdminAction. No direct test, which is acceptable.
3 Fidelity: the 18 tests, the AUTHENTICATION_ARCHITECTURE hunk and the #1103 items; two exclusions True Section 2
4a SignOut_WhenClearingTokensFails_DoesNotNavigateToLogin True It fails if the early return is removed. One should-fix in section 4.
4b A real expired-JWT permission test False 3.5
4c Release notes and authorization-model.md Mostly true POST-only logout, the cache contract and both constructors are documented. Gaps are listed in section 4.
4d CustomElements Unknown-mode doc True authorization-model.md and the PR body both say the CustomElements host runs without Security.
4e Body updated for #1089/#1096/#1097 on PR C True Three rows in the excluded table.
5 All 28 threads resolved, each with a reply Resolved: true. Each with a reply: false. Six code-quality threads were resolved with no reply: 4173656647 and 4173656650 (constant condition, Index.razor.cs), and 4173656652, 4173656660, 4173656662 and 4173656665 (generic catch). 14 new threads are open (section 6).
— Merge kept #8585 and A True
  • LocalReturnPath.cs is byte-identical to main and to #8585's final head 9c066d47.
  • AuthenticationController differs from main only in Logout, which is POST + [ValidateAntiForgeryToken] + [FromForm], still through SafeRedirectUri.
  • Of the 121 non-Studio files #8572 changed, only doc/migrations/authorization-model.md differs at this head, and only by B's added sections.
  • Outside Studio, B adds only the Webhooks permission provider, its csproj, and HttpWebhooksResourceIsAdvertisedSoStarAdministratorsReceiveIt in the smoke tests, which ran in CI (9/9).

2. Fidelity (re-run)

I compared every added line of each source hunk against the head file.

Item Result
#1075 RoleEditorSurfaceTests: the 12 advanced-grant tests Ported. 155 of 156 added lines are present. The remaining one, Assert.DoesNotContain("Direct grant", …), guards a label that core never had; core asserts the grant's aria-label instead. That adaptation is fine.
#1075 LoginChooserTests: the 4 busy-state tests Ported. The only difference is Change(...) → Input(...) on the two fields, which is equivalent.
#1075 External Authentication HasAsync_HonorsCoreGrantsAndWildcards / HasAsync_RejectsGrantsThatDoNotCoverTheRequirement Ported onto IPermissionService, with identical InlineData. Dropping HasAsync_FailsClosedWithoutPermissionClaims is justified, because it is claims-specific; HasAsync_WhenPermissionServiceIsMissing_FailsClosed covers the same intent.
#1075 AUTHENTICATION_ARCHITECTURE.md Both added lines were already present. My Round 2 finding was wrong, and the Engineer's "already identical" is correct.
#1103 Index.razor.css, blueprint, 007 PRD All added lines present.
#1103 FeatureCatalogTests #1103 added one test, InitializeFeatures_IsReportedThroughTheEnvironmentAwareService, and it is ported. The file didn't exist on main, so its companion tests came along, adapted to FullName. The source comment above the test was dropped (nit).
Exclusion: ClaimsPermissionService Holds. The ruling requires /identity/me/permissions.
Exclusion: FeatureCatalog short-name matching Holds. Main's DefaultFeatureService matches RemoteFeatureAttribute.Name against FullName (line 46). Short-name matching would be a behaviour change outside this port.

3. Blocking findings (all required for Round 4)

3.1 The refresh signal must be scoped, not a process-wide singleton

AddCoreInternal registers TryAddSingleton<IPermissionRefreshSignal, PermissionRefreshSignal>(). On Blazor Server every circuit's IdentityPermissionContext subscribes to that one instance.

Probe (real module registrations, two scopes from one provider, environment switch in scope A):

Signal lifetime Changed in scope A Changed in scope B (another user)
Singleton (this head) 1 1
Scoped 1 0

Effect:

  • Every user's silent JWT refresh, and every environment switch, invalidates every connected circuit. Each one re-fetches /identity/me/permissions and re-renders its guards, views and menu. That is O(users) backend calls per refresh, across all users.
  • Invalidate() also runs on other circuits' threads, which is what makes the races in 3.2 reachable.
  • CodeRabbit (Major) and Greptile (P2) flag the same thing.

Scoped works because:

  • DefaultEnvironmentService and JwtTokenProvider are scoped.
  • The authenticating handler resolves ITokenProvider from the circuit's scope through IBlazorServiceAccessor.
  • The signal still has no dependencies, so the cycle stays broken.

Required:

  • Change the registration to services.TryAddScoped<IPermissionRefreshSignal, PermissionRefreshSignal>();. With only that change, Security (138) and Environments (19) tests all pass.
  • Add a test: two scopes from one provider with AddEnvironmentsModule + AddSecurityModule; SetCurrentEnvironment in scope A raises Changed in A and not in B.
  • Update the remarks on IPermissionRefreshSignal ("process-wide"), the comment in AddCoreInternal, authorization-model.md ("a no-dependency singleton") and the PR body.

3.2 Make the cache's read and store atomic, and never hand out superseded grants

IdentityPermissionContext has three holes. Each matters once Invalidate() can run on another thread. After 3.1 that can still happen, because JwtTokenProvider raises from the HTTP handler pipeline, whose continuations can run on the thread pool.

  • (a) The fast path reads the field twice. if (HasCachedSnapshot) return _snapshot!; reads _snapshot twice. An Invalidate() between the two reads returns null through the !.
    • Fix: var snapshot = _snapshot; if (snapshot is { State: not IdentityPermissionSnapshotState.Unavailable }) return snapshot;. Do the same for the check inside the lock.
  • (b) Check-then-store is not atomic with Invalidate(). An Invalidate() landing between if (generation != Volatile.Read(ref _generation)) and _snapshot = loaded stores the superseded grants after Changed has already fired. Nothing re-resolves after that, so the UI keeps them until the next invalidation.
    • Fix: a small _sync lock around both sides: lock (_sync) { if (generation == _generation && loaded.State != Unavailable) _snapshot = loaded; } and lock (_sync) { _generation++; _snapshot = null; }, raising Changed outside the lock. Or publish (generation, snapshot) as one immutable object with Interlocked.CompareExchange.
  • (c) An overtaken load returns the superseded grants to its caller. That is return HasCachedSnapshot ? _snapshot! : loaded;, and GetAsync_WhenInvalidatedDuringLoad_DoesNotCacheTheStaleSnapshot currently asserts it (stale.HasPermission(users:view) is true). Any caller that doesn't re-resolve on Changed keeps them. 3.3 shows a concrete one. CodeRabbit raised this as a security finding (CWE-863).
    • Fix: when the generation moved, loop and load again (or return the newer cached snapshot), so GetAsync only ever returns grants for the current generation.
    • Change the test to assert that the overtaken caller receives the new, zero-grant snapshot. Add a test that calls Invalidate() between the generation check and the store, using a hook or a paused fake.

3.3 The Users and Roles access boundaries don't re-resolve

UserAdministrationAccessBoundary and RoleAdministrationAccessBoundary load their access once in OnInitializedAsync, and again only from their own "Try again" button. Neither subscribes to IPermissionSnapshotCache.Changed.

Probe (bUnit, the same registrations as AddSecurityModule): users view,create,update,delete → view only, then an auth change. The boundary still renders CanCreate = True and made no second request. The page guard above it stays, because view is still granted, so the create, edit and delete actions stay visible. The backend still refuses them. Round 2 required that permission-dependent UI re-resolves after invalidation.

Required:

  • In both boundaries, subscribe to every IPermissionSnapshotCache.Changed (resolved as the tracking base does), and call InvokeAsync(() => LoadAccessAsync(_lifetime.Token)). Unsubscribe in DisposeAsync.
  • Add one test per boundary: full grants → view-only + auth change hides create/update/delete; and an environment-style Invalidate() does the same.

3.4 The NavMenu Changed hook has no test

Reverting NavMenu to auth-only (if (_caches.Length > 0) → if (false)) passes all 119 Core tests. So an environment switch or silent refresh that leaves the menu showing the previous grants would go unnoticed. The claim that "each fails when its hook is removed" doesn't hold for NavMenu.

Required: a NavMenu test with a cache present. Render the menu with an item that requires a grant, remove the grant, call Invalidate() (or raise the signal), and assert the item disappears. It must fail under the revert above.

3.5 The "real expired-JWT" test doesn't use the JWT

PermissionService_WhenTokenIsExpired_FailsClosed now creates an expired JWT and asserts IsExpired(). The token is never passed to anything: the IMePermissionsApi stub still returns 401 unconditionally, exactly as the anonymous test does. Round 2 asked for this test to be renamed or made real.

Required: one of these.

  • Make it real: drive an expired access token through ElsaIdentityAuthenticatingApiHttpMessageHandler → JwtTokenProvider, with a failing refresh, so the 401 leads to a known empty set. Optionally add a second case where the refresh succeeds and grants load with the new token.
  • Or delete the unused JWT and rename the test to what it checks, e.g. PermissionService_When401_FailsClosed.

4. Should-fix (not blocking)

  • Sign-out failure is silent to the user. When clearing fails twice, the service logs an error and returns. The user clicked "Sign out" and sees nothing happen. Show a message through IUserMessageService (for example, "Sign-out could not clear this browser's session. Try again.") and assert it in SignOut_WhenClearingTokensFails_DoesNotNavigateToLogin.
  • Release notes and authorization-model.md:
    • Name the public HostedAuthenticationPaths.LogoutFormAction. The notes say the form posts to NavigationManager.ToAbsoluteUri("authentication/logout"), which isn't what the code does.
    • List the IdentityPermissionContext constructor change. Main's two-argument constructor is gone, which breaks compiled callers.
    • Mention that AddOpenIdConnectAuth now registers AddControllersWithViews().
    • Fix the "singleton" wording after 3.1.
  • Explanatory comments dropped from Index.razor.cs, both dashboard Feature.cs files and the IFeatureService.IsInitialized doc are still missing (open since Round 2), along with the FeatureCatalogTests comment.
  • Constructor parameter: IdentityPermissionContext takes IEnumerable<AuthenticationStateProvider>, which constructs every registered provider just to subscribe. An optional AuthenticationStateProvider? authenticationStateProvider = null says what is meant. (Nit.)

5. Tests and revert checks

CI on this head ran all 17 Studio test projects, and all passed: Security 138, Environments 19, External Authentication 465, Core 119, Dashboard 107, Administration 60, Workflows 479 and the rest. Locally in Release, Core, Security, Environments, Dashboard and Administration match. External Authentication showed timing-only failures on my overloaded machine; it passes 465/465 in CI.

Mutation Result
H1: cache doesn't subscribe to AuthenticationStateChanged caught (PermissionView_AfterSignInChangesToZeroGrant_HidesTheAdminAction)

6. Gate status @ 1572857

  • CI: green. ubuntu-latest (Compile + Test, including all 17 Studio projects and the smoke tests) succeeded at 19:26 CEST. CodeQL/Analyze, pack-studio-core, pack-slack-only, select-tests, solution filters, GitGuardian, CLA, CodeRabbit and the Greptile check all pass. run-affected-tests is skipped, as it is dispatch-only.
  • Greptile: 4/5 on 1572857d (reviewed 19:19 CEST; 5/5 needed). Two P2s:
    • cross-user refreshes (3.1);
    • required class braces. UngatedPage, DashboardPage and WorkflowInstancesPage in PermissionPageGuardTests.cs (lines 373, 376, 415) are declared : ComponentBase; without a body. Give them { }.
  • Review threads: 42 in total. The 28 earlier ones are resolved, six of them without a reply (section 1). 14 new threads are open, all posted 19:18–19:19 CEST:
    • Greptile: cross-user refresh and braces;
    • CodeRabbit: the singleton signal (Major), the superseded grants returned to callers (security), and a blueprint/PRD rule (load the overview when only workflows/runtime:view is held);
    • code quality: 9 threads (generic catches, the Index.razor.cs constant conditions again, an undisposed HttpResponseMessage in the sign-out tests).
  • Mergeability: MERGEABLE, state BLOCKED (reviews).
  • Greptile's outside-diff note, about WorkflowDashboardContributor runtime-status isolation, is backend code from #8572 that is already on main. It isn't this PR's to fix; track it separately.

Maintainability (HIGH bar)

The signal and generation design is the right shape, and it is far easier to follow than Round 2's:

  • one owner of the cache;
  • producers that only raise a dependency-free signal;
  • consumers that follow a single Changed event, with documented semantics on IPermissionSnapshotCache.

The XML docs say what happens and why. Three points remain:

  • The lifetime is part of the contract. A per-user signal must be scoped, and the docs should say so (3.1).
  • The concurrency rules belong in the code. Name the invariant on IdentityPermissionContext: "a snapshot is stored only for the generation it was loaded under, and GetAsync returns only current-generation grants". Implement it with one lock or one atomic publish, so a reader doesn't have to reason about interleavings (3.2).
  • Every Changed consumer should be visible. The tracking base, NavMenu and the two access boundaries should share one small pattern, or a helper, so the next consumer doesn't miss it (3.3).

Required for Round 4

  1. Register IPermissionRefreshSignal as scoped. Add the two-scope isolation test and update the docs and body (3.1).
  2. In IdentityPermissionContext: read _snapshot once on the fast paths; make generation check-and-store and invalidate atomic; never return superseded grants. Update GetAsync_WhenInvalidatedDuringLoad_DoesNotCacheTheStaleSnapshot to expect the new grants, and add the between-check-and-store test (3.2).
  3. Make the Users and Roles access boundaries reload on Changed, with one test each (3.3).
  4. Add a NavMenu test that fails when its Changed hook is reverted (3.4).
  5. Make the expired-JWT test real, or rename it and drop the unused JWT (3.5).
  6. Add braces to the three test page classes. Reply to and resolve the 14 open threads, and add replies to the six resolved without one. Get Greptile to 5/5 (section 6).

Register IPermissionRefreshSignal per circuit, publish (generation,
snapshot) atomically, reload overtaken GetAsync callers, and re-resolve
Users/Roles boundaries plus NavMenu on Changed.

Raise IPermissionRefreshSignal only when a JWT refresh fails or the
sub/permissions claims change, and cap overtaken GetAsync reloads so a
near-expiry token cannot livelock. Keep Users and Roles content mounted
while re-checking access, and honour a Changed that arrives mid-check.

Elsa 3 Code Review: APPROVE + HIGH @ c67ff78

Code Review, Round 5/5 (final, extra round approved)

Scope: core#8586 @ c67ff78d, base main 8d88d04f. Since Round 4 (e07d2e3a) there are three commits:

  • a244d07e: B1, B2, the three threads, the corrected reply on 4174098626, and the nits;
  • c937a27a: disables admin mutations while access is re-checked;
  • c67ff78d: test-only fix for the queued-refresh race.

As agreed, I reviewed only B1, B2, those threads and the claimed nits, plus regressions against Round 3 and Round 4 behaviour.

Summary

Approve. Both Round 4 blockers are fixed in production code:

  • B1: the reload loop is gone, real permission changes still reach the UI, and a failed refresh fails closed.
  • B2: the editors stay mounted, the spinner shows only on first load, mid-check changes are coalesced, and mutations are disabled during a re-check and re-enabled after.

The only problem at c937a27a, the flaky queued-refresh test that made CI fail, is fixed by the test-only commit c67ff78d. That fix is stable locally. Every revert probe for the new behaviour fails a named test, and every Round 3 and Round 4 revert probe still does.

Gate met: CI is green on this exact head, Greptile is 5/5 on this exact head, all 49 threads are resolved with replies, and the PR is MERGEABLE/CLEAN.

The follow-ups at the end are all non-blocking.

1. Delta since c937a27a: test-only, confirmed

git diff c937a27a c67ff78d touches one file, SecurityMenuAndBoundaryTests.cs (+16/−6). It changes only the end of the two Render_WhenChangedArrivesDuringACheck_KeepsEditsAndHonoursTheQueuedRefresh tests:

  • the final assertions now run inside one WaitForAssertion: create:False, no "Checking access", Calls == 3 and an empty Results queue;
  • after that, the draft must still read "kept".

There is no production change.

Why this is enough:

  • At c937a27a the final wait passed immediately, because the view-only copy shown during the re-check also reads create:False. Calls == 3 was then checked before the queued third call started. CI run 37146137227 failed on exactly that (Expected: 3, Actual: 2).
  • Now the wait cannot finish until the third call has run and taken the queued result.
  • The markup still can't tell the in-check copy from the queued view-only result, since both show create:False. Rendering update with a distinguishable third result would close that gap. That's optional.

Stability at c67ff78d:

Run Result
The test alone (Role + User), 30 runs 30/30 passed; at c937a27a, 0/25
Full Security project, 10 runs 10/10 passed (145/145 each); at c937a27a, about 1 failure in 7
Revert: a mid-check Changed is dropped (both boundaries) caught (both tests fail)

2. B1: endless reload loop, fixed

  • Signal only on real changes: JwtTokenProvider raises the signal only when the refresh failed, or the old and new tokens differ in sub or permissions. The values are compared as sorted ordinal sequences, and a missing or unparsable refreshed token counts as changed.
  • The comparison covers what the UI depends on. /identity/me/permissions evaluates the bearer principal, and DefaultElsaTokenService always issues sub plus one permissions claim per grant (none when there are none).
    • Reordered values, or a single string versus a one-item array, don't signal.
    • An added, removed or changed value signals, and so do a changed sub and none → grant.
    • [a,a] → [a] also signals. That's harmless; the backend never issues duplicates.
  • Probes:
    • Round 4 livelock (the refreshed token keeps landing inside the 2-minute window, same claims): now 1 load, 0 signals. At e07d2e3a it ran about 1.43 million loads in 5 s.
    • Changed claims: 1 signal, then it settles after 2 loads.
    • Failed refresh: 1 signal, tokens cleared, then Forbidden, which fails closed.
  • Cap: after the cap, an uncached Unavailable is returned. The cap is 3 loads, i.e. 2 retries; the docs say "retried at most three times" (wording nit). Reaching the cap logs nothing.
  • Tests: GetAsync_WhenNearExpiryRefreshKeepsSubAndPermissions_DoesNotLoop and GetAsync_WhenOvertakenReloadCapIsReached_ReturnsUnavailableWithoutCaching each fail when their behaviour is reverted. PermissionView_AfterSilentTokenRefresh_ReloadsGrants now refreshes to a same-sub token with a different permissions claim, which proves a real permission change still updates the UI.

3. B2: access boundaries, fixed

  • No more remount: the boundaries no longer clear _access. The spinner shows only on first load, and a mid-check Changed sets _reloadRequested, which the loop then runs.
  • Mutations disabled during a re-check (c937a27a): DisplayedAccess passes a copy with CanCreate/CanUpdate/CanDelete false while a re-check of Ready access is running. The flag is cleared in finally, and the method renders once more at the end.
  • Probes (real context, access service and boundary):
Case Result
Changed with unchanged grants no remount, no spinner
Admin → view-only flips in place
Zero grants content hidden
Re-check returns full access disabled during the check, re-enabled after
Re-check throws, or returns Unavailable Unavailable alert (fail closed); "Try again" recovers
Stuck re-check disabled while pending, no remount. In production the backend HTTP timeout bounds the wait, then it becomes Unavailable, so it can't stay disabled forever.
Dispose 0 Changed subscribers left
  • Drafts: they survive on the edit pages. The editors reload only when their Id changes.

4. Revert checks

Mutation Result
Always or never raise on a successful refresh; compare sub only caught
Remove the overtaken-reload cap caught (the test hangs; the blame-hang timeout aborts it)
Boundary clears _access before a check; boundary drops a mid-check Changed (User / Role) caught
No downgrade during a re-check; no render at the start of a re-check; always downgrade caught
Round 3/4 regressions: H1–H3, H5, H5b, H6, H7, H8 (NavMenu), H10 (sign-out), signal back to singleton, boundary subscriptions removed all still caught
Failed refresh doesn't raise not caught (test gap; the code is correct per the probe)

5. Threads and nits

  • All 49 threads are resolved, each with a reply. None are open.
  • I re-read the replies posted on this round's threads:
    • 4174464590 (CodeRabbit, the queued-refresh race): the reply cites CI run 37146137227 and the c67ff78d fix. CodeRabbit confirmed the race is addressed and resolved the thread. Accurate.
    • 4174461472 and 4174461478 (code quality, "constant condition" on !_disposed): answered as false positives, because DisposeAsync can set _disposed while GetAsync is awaited. That is correct; the analysis assumes a single thread.
  • Earlier required threads:
    • 4174270385, 4174262142 and 4174262154 are resolved with accurate replies;
    • 4174098626 now gives the right reason (Index.RequiredScope already loads the overview for runtime-only users) and the doc sentences are fixed;
    • 4174421427 (old admin controls stay active) was fixed by c937a27a.
  • Nits:
    • AfterLoad is test-only ([EditorBrowsable(Never)], documented);
    • TestWidget has a body;
    • the blueprint and PRD runtime-view text is corrected;
    • the release notes now name HostedAuthenticationPaths.LogoutFormAction, fix the ToAbsoluteUri description and mention AddControllersWithViews().

6. Gate status @ c67ff78

  • CI: green on c67ff78d.
    • ubuntu-latest (Compile + Test) succeeded at 21:45 CEST in 22 min. All 17 Studio test projects passed with 0 failures: Security 145, Core 120, Environments 20, External Authentication 465, Workflows 479, Dashboard 107, Administration 60, Workflows Designer 83 and the rest. The smoke tests passed 9/9.
    • Both CodeQL Analyze (csharp) jobs pass, as does the aggregate CodeQL check. pack-studio-core, pack-slack-only, select-tests, solution filters, GitGuardian, CLA, CodeRabbit and the Greptile check all pass.
    • run-affected-tests is skipped, as it is dispatch-only.
  • Greptile: 5/5 on c67ff78d (last reviewed commit = this head, 21:29 CEST): "No outstanding findings block merging". The outside-diff summary says no findings remain.
  • Threads: 49 in total, 0 open, 0 resolved without a reply.
  • Mergeability: MERGEABLE, state CLEAN.

7. Greptile's 1/5 on #8587 (stale administration data after a user or environment switch)

  • User switch: not reachable.
    • Every sign-in and sign-out path navigates away, mostly with a forced reload. Login pages are separate routes, so the admin page is unmounted before a new user signs in.
    • A silent refresh can't change sub: the backend resolves the refresh by sub.
    • A failed refresh leads to Forbidden → Access Denied.
  • Environment switch: real, but it predates this PR, and it isn't a disclosure.
    • Nothing reloads pages on a switch; only EnvironmentPicker re-renders. So the admin page keeps showing data from the previous backend, to the same user, who was allowed to see it there.
    • If the new environment also grants access, the controls re-enable, and a Save would send the old draft to the new backend.
    • Base main does the same on every Studio page, without even re-checking access. This PR is strictly better: it re-checks against the new backend, disables mutations meanwhile, and shows Access Denied or Unavailable when refused.
  • Ruling: out of scope for B2 (preserving drafts on a permission re-check), not a blocker; follow-up below.

Non-blocking follow-ups

  1. Reload page data on environment switch, app-wide. For these two pages, keying ChildContent on the backend URL the access was checked against would make a backend change remount the editor while same-backend re-checks keep drafts.
  2. Create pages: during a re-check, CanOpen => _isCreate ? Access.CanCreate : … renders "your current sign-in cannot create a role/user" and unmounts the form.
    • The committed values survive, but text in the field being typed in, not yet committed, is lost.
    • Treat a re-check as read-only on create pages instead.
  3. Release notes: list the removed two-argument IdentityPermissionContext constructor, which is a binary break.
  4. Add a test that a failed refresh raises the signal.
  5. Change the cap wording to "3 loads, 2 retries" and log a warning when the cap is reached.
  6. Optionally make the queued-refresh tests prove the third result is rendered (render update, with a distinguishable third result).
  7. From Round 3, still open:
    • failed sign-out is silent to the user (IUserMessageService);
    • restore the dropped explanatory comments;
    • the IEnumerable<AuthenticationStateProvider> parameter nit.

Verdict

APPROVE + HIGH @ c67ff78d0a67a7b05116b549fb7b8dad1055573b. Every Round 3 and Round 4 blocker is fixed, nothing new is blocking, and the gate is met: CI green, Greptile 5/5 and no open threads, all on this head.

PR C must re-merge exactly this head, c67ff78d0a67a7b05116b549fb7b8dad1055573b, and nothing later. The Engineer reports that C was already re-merged onto it as cf32c527f; verify that against C's history before C's own review. If B moves again, this approval doesn't carry over.
