test(web): permanent layout gate for table cells and badges; correct stale cost-column docs - #240
Conversation
…stale cost-column docs (#223) bin/ui-geometry renders the Accounts and Keys tables in headless Chromium (pinned Playwright) against a seeded fixture served from route mocks, at 1024/1280/1440px, and fails when a cost block leaves its cell, cost text meets a credential badge, a badge is not opaque, or a selector matches nothing. No request leaves the runner and no claude subprocess can start (no refreshable account exists). Wired into CI as a gating job. #62's fix was checked once by hand and #94 later undid the layout with CI green; this keeps it. Stale comments/spec that still described a separate Accounts COST column are corrected. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
The pinned-font check cannot fail when DejaVu is missing.
document.fonts.check() returns true when the FontFaceSet has no face that still needs to load for the font list. The SPA does not declare DejaVu as a web font. It is only a local system font. If it is missing, check('16px "DejaVu Sans"') still returns true, and the browser silently uses the sans-serif fallback. Every measured pixel then changes, and the "pinned fonts unavailable" check never fires. Determinism is the stated reason this gate exists.
Detect the font by measuring text width instead. Compare the rendered width in DejaVu against the generic fallback.

…n clock and font; v2.27.0 - Cost containment, cost-vs-badge and Keys neighbour checks now measure painted text (Range over contents), not element boxes, so nowrap text overflowing a narrowed box (the #62 failure mode) fails; neighbour cells are compared by their content ink. - Counts pinned to the fixed fixture: every row must yield a cost block and a cost-text span, so a renamed selector or a silently empty row fails. - Font guard is a real rendered-width probe; the browser clock is pinned to the fixture's NOW; alpha checked on every badge; gate code gets its own strict tsconfig in the build graph; fixture typed against the SPA's real view types; routes awaited; build to a temp outDir. ui-geometry-pipeline
Adds a headless-Chromium layout gate (bin/ui-geometry, CI job, fixture mocks, geometry rules, unit tests) and corrects stale cost-column comments. Gate is green, but the accounts rules never inspect the neighbouring cells they already measure, leaving credential-column overflow there unguarded.
concern-security
No product auth or credential surface widens; the two security findings are in the new harness's egress fence, which does not cover WebSocket upgrades and silently fulfills cross-origin /api/admin requests instead of recording them.
concern-tests
Failure-first unit tests pin every rule the new geometry gate enforces; the one gap is that assertAccounts never asserts the per-row neighbour measurements it collects, so cell-to-cell ink overlap is guarded on /keys only.
concern-style-nits
Style verdict: three nits — the keys minGap docblock describes the wrong quantity (cell box vs painted ink), a provably unreachable fixture length guard, and fixture ids/labels duplicated between the entity arrays and the usage rows.
ui-geometry-pipeline (handoff)
Geometry gate rules are pure and fail-closed, and the handed tsconfig check passes: ../dist-types-gate resolves to apps/web/dist-types-gate. Two issues: the mock fence fulfills rather than aborts cross-origin /api/admin/** calls, and rules.ts documents keys minGap as cell box when it measures ink.
No findings from: release-and-build-wiring, concern-api-contract, release-and-build-wiring (handoff).

minor · security context.route never intercepts WebSocket upgrades, so a page-opened WS to any origin connects for real and the "nothing leaves the runner" fence covers HTTP only. Add a closing route beside the catch-all: context.routeWebSocket("**/*", ws => { blocked.push(ws.url); ws.close() }).

Re-checked at a894dbf8ad57: still open at apps/web/ui-geometry/admin-mock.ts:54. Head's installAdminMock registers only HTTP context.route handlers (catch-all ends line 54, admin mock line 56); no context.routeWebSocket call exists anywhere in the file, so a page-opened WS to any origin still bypasses the "nothing leaves the runner" fence. Changes since the finding touch only OIDC/translation/config files, never this fence, and no thread reply declines the finding.

minor · security The **/api/admin/** pattern matches any origin, so a cross-origin /api/admin request is fulfilled with fixture data instead of being aborted — the catch-all never sees it and the egress-fence violation log stays silent. Compare url.origin against the static origin here and abort mismatches into blocked.

Re-checked at a894dbf8ad57: still open at apps/web/ui-geometry/admin-mock.ts:56. The **/api/admin/** handler at head still fulfills/404s every matching request without comparing url.origin to the static origin, and being registered second it takes precedence over the **/* catch-all (comment at lines 44–45) — a cross-origin /api/admin GET is answered from GET[] and blocked stays silent. minor · bug Playwright runs routes in reverse registration order (as this file's own comment states), so a cross-origin request to /api/admin/** hits this handler first, gets a 200 from the fixture, and is never recorded — the catch-all abort fence and violations() stay green. Re-checked at a894dbf8ad57: still open at apps/web/ui-geometry/admin-mock.ts:58. Unchanged since the finding: the admin handler still registers last (so Playwright consults it first) and still parses the URL without any origin comparison — line 58 goes straight to the method check, so a cross-origin /api/admin/** GET is still fulfilled with fixture data and never reaches the catch-all abort fence or blocked. The suggested url.origin !== origin guard is absent at head.

The docblock at head still reads "neighbouring cell's box (keys)" while line 206 still computes minGap via gap(block, other.ink) — content ink, not the cell's box. The changes since the finding only added a STORED-badge check to this file and never touched the docblock, so the box-vs-ink wording mismatch remains.

minor · test assertAccounts never reads row.others (already measured by measureTables) and tests cost ink only against credential badges, so a CredentialCell plan pill or login line painting over the TrafficCell figures — or figures spilling into Status — fails nothing, the exact #94 shape this gate exists to stop.

Re-checked at a894dbf8ad57: still open at apps/web/ui-geometry/rules.ts:117. At head assertAccounts still intersect-tests cost text only against credential badge boxes (lines 117–123) and, unlike assertKeys (lines 195–207), never reads row.others nor checks neighbouring ink stays in its own cell — so a CredentialCell pill over TrafficCell figures or figures spilling into Status still fails nothing. The newly added check only pins that a "stored" badge exists in the fixture; it adds no cross-cell overlap coverage.

minor · test assertAccounts drops the per-row others measurements it collects (geometry.ts:112-117): on /accounts a neighbouring cell's ink painting over the cost figures stays green, while assertKeys fails the identical geometry via its neighbour checks. Add the contained(other.ink, other.cell) and intersects(text, other.ink) checks here, or stop measuring others on the accounts surface.

Re-checked at a894dbf8ad57: still open at apps/web/ui-geometry/rules.ts:117. assertAccounts' row loop at head still checks only costCell containment and badge intersections; the newly added STORED-badge check guards fixture presence, not neighbour ink. ui-geometry-harness
New ui-geometry gate (harness, fixture, rules, unit tests, CI job) is sound; two small gaps: the fixture's usage breakdown — the rows the gate measures — is the only untyped fixture export, and the 2.29.0 changelog heading has no link definition.
concern-tests
Test surface holds: the gate's rules ship with failing-case pure unit tests wired into both the typecheck and test jobs, the CI job runs the browser gate with no continue-on-error, and every behaviour this diff changes is covered or comment-only; one small changelog link defect found.
concern-style-nits
minGap's doc says 'box' while the code measures 'ink', and the accounts path's badges count and alphaRule walk different badge sets.

minor · docs The new ## [2.29.0] heading is a bracketed reference with no link definition — the definition list at the file's end stops at [2.28.0]/[2.27.0], so this release renders literal brackets where every other release heading renders as a link. Add the [2.29.0] definition beside the others.

minor · test usage is the only fixture export with no wire type: a drift in the usage response's byKey/byAccount rows — the spend figures this gate exists to measure — renders silently instead of failing typecheck the way accounts/keys do, since fixture-types.ts restates only WireTotals. Restate the row shape (id/label/totals/series) beside WireTotals and annotate usage with it.
grounded: apps/web/ui-geometry/fixture.ts, apps/web/src/lib/usage-index.ts:91, apps/web/src/routes/usage/UsageTopN.tsx …
… typed, no person handle - Shared id constants join the fixture's keys/accounts to their usage rows; the gate asserts rendered rows equal the fixture and that the stress cells really show their figures (the big-spender cost, the STORED row's metered and notional), so a broken join fails by name. - Every admin mock body is typed against the SPA's own types (the auth-methods mock had the wrong shape); usage typed as WireSummary; badge opacity must be 1 as well as background. - A table that never renders is a named failure that still reports unmapped/egress calls. - Fixture key owner is a placeholder; bun.lock carries only the playwright addition; KeysTable comment reworded; CHANGELOG link line for 2.29.0. Check ancestor opacity before accepting a badge. If a credential cell or row has opacity: 0.5, its badge becomes translucent, but the badge’s own computed opacity remains "1". alphaRule then accepts a badge whose background does not paint opaquely. Check opacity along the badge’s ancestor chain. (w3.org)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Verify that stress figures paint, not only that they exist in the DOM. If a cost block has opacity: 0, textContent still contains the expected figure and its geometry remains measurable. Playwright also treats an opacity-zero element as visible, so the ready selector does not reject it. The gate can pass while the cost figure is invisible. Check effective opacity when recording rendered cost text. (playwright.dev)

… typecheck every gate test - rules: a Keys row that matched zero neighbouring cells now fails by name instead of passing the intersection checks vacuously; unit test added. - tsconfig: include ui-geometry-*.test.ts so the stress test is typechecked too. - admin-mock: an /api/admin call to another origin is blocked and reported, not answered. - run: resolve the web dir with fileURLToPath so a path with spaces works. - KeysTable comment and the CHANGELOG/CLAUDE.md gate wording: Keys has no credential badge; its check is containment against neighbouring cells. … unpriced #240's fixture restates the admin usage wire totals; this PR makes unpriced a required field on them, so the merged tree did not typecheck. The fixture now sends a measured zero; the layout gate still passes (243 checks). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* feat(usage): count unpriced attempts in the daily rollup; v2.28.0 (#220) An attempt with unknown cost added 0 to both cost columns, so unpriced traffic read as free. usage_attempt_daily_v2 gains a nullable unpriced_attempts (1 per unknown-cost attempt that used tokens; NULL = not measured, never back-filled), carried in the contribution payload and summed by a per-kind upsert. usage_history_state.unpriced_since is written (insert-or-update; the v2 row is created lazily) as the day after the migration. The read path projects the measure from all four historySource parts, including the receipts query that answers today, and reports unpriced: { attempts, since } on totals and breakdown rows; a window wholly before since reads null, never 0. Migration 0035_unpriced_attempts (renumbered after #221's 0034). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * test(usage): #241 review: pin the additive merge, the since gates and the day-after rule; drop the unused raw measure - New tests catch: an overwrite (or missing coalesce) in the additive upsert; removing the receipts on-or-after-since gate; `+ 0` instead of `+ 1` in the migration; dropping the exclusive-end rule. - The raw-records repository no longer carries an unpriced measure (unused by the summary, and it could only ever say 0); the since fragment and payload measure list live in one shared module. - Docs/CHANGELOG: rollback past 2.28.0 needs unpriced_since moved forward on re-upgrade; router_cost_basis_total counts unknown attempts that reached an account. Tests are independent of each other and avoid the midnight edge. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * test(usage): #241 review: order-independent migration-seed test; delete the dead two-table read - The seed test snapshots the v2 state row before any test moves `since` and asserts unpriced_since = updated_at's UTC date + 1, both written by the migration's statement; passes under --randomize, fails on `+ 0`. - readTotals/readBreakdown and their rollup helpers had no callers; deleted with the tests that only exercised them, instead of carrying unpriced plumbing through dead code. - A test pins the never-migrated fallback (attempts null, since 'infinity'); CHANGELOG link line for 2.30.0. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(usage): #241 review: migration 0035 takes unpriced_since and updated_at from one clock unpriced_since used clock_timestamp() while updated_at used now() (transaction start), so a fresh-database migration crossing UTC midnight would put them a day apart. Both now come from now(). The fallback test restores only the v2 state row. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix(db): #241 review: migration 0035 locks usage_history_state before the rollup table Every runtime transaction takes the history lock (usage_history_state) before it writes usage_attempt_daily_v2; the migration took them the other way round, so an upgrade overlapping a running replica could deadlock. Same statements, reordered; schema and snapshot unchanged. The rollback note now says old-image days carry no or partial measure, and covers an overlapping upgrade. Restores the journal's trailing newline. Closes #223. Part of #216.
What
bin/ui-geometryrenders the Accounts and Keys tables in headless Chromium at 1024/1280/1440 px, using a pinned Playwright, against a seeded fixture. It runs on every PR as a gating CI job (nocontinue-on-error, no|| true). It fails when:Why
#62's overlap fix was checked once by hand. A month later #94 changed the layout with CI green, because no check existed. This makes the check permanent.
Changes
bin/ui-geometryandapps/web/ui-geometry/*: the engine, a static server, a mock admin API with an egress fence, the fixture and the rules, each file under 300 lines.apps/web/test/unit/ui-geometry-rules.test.tsholds pure rule tests..github/workflows/ci.yml: a new gatingui-geometryjob.package.json/bun.lock:playwrightpinned exactly.KeysTable.tsxandSpendCell.tsxcomments, and the/accountsrow indocs/idea/08-observability.md. Accounts renders cost insideTrafficCellsince feat(web): accounts grouped by provider, subscription login expiry and reconnect-all, live refresh after actions #94. The/keysrow,Badge.module.scssandUsageCell.tsxwere accurate and are unchanged.Provider safety. The admin API is served to the browser from Playwright route mocks, and a catch-all aborts any cross-origin request. So no request leaves the runner and no
claudesubprocess can start: no refreshable account exists. The seeded subscription row also has a null config dir, and HTTP accounts point at a dead localhost port.No layout fix was needed: the gate passes on the current layout.
Verification
