feat(usage): count unpriced attempts in the daily rollup; v2.30.0 - #241
Conversation
An attempt with unknown cost added 0 to both cost columns, so unpriced traffic read as
free. usage_attempt_daily_v2 gains a nullable unpriced_attempts (1 per unknown-cost
attempt that used tokens; NULL = not measured, never back-filled), carried in the
contribution payload and summed by a per-kind upsert. usage_history_state.unpriced_since is
written (insert-or-update; the v2 row is created lazily) as the day after the migration.
The read path projects the measure from all four historySource parts, including the
receipts query that answers today, and reports unpriced: { attempts, since } on totals and
breakdown rows; a window wholly before since reads null, never 0. Migration
0035_unpriced_attempts (renumbered after #221's 0034).

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
The raw totals query returns 0 for a window that lies wholly before unpriced_since.
The raw unpricedAttempts aggregate is count(*) filter (...). count never returns NULL. If a raw-only window, such as ?window=today on migration day, ends before since, the API returns attempts: 0 and not null. This breaks the contract in UsageUnpriced and in the docs. historySums handles the same case with a lastDay check, so the two read paths now give different results. The API rollup also turns a raw 0 combined with a history null into 0.
Add the same window check here. The window's last touched day comes from window.to - 1ms. If that day is before since, return null.
Proposed fix
const unpricedAttemptsFor = (window: UsageWindow) => {
const lastDay = new Date(window.to.getTime() - 1).toISOString().slice(0, 10)
return sql<number | null>`(case when ${unpricedSinceDate} > ${lastDay}::date then null else count(*) filter (where ...) end)::float8`
}Build the aggregates for each window in totals and breakdown.

… the day-after rule; drop the unused raw measure - New tests catch: an overwrite (or missing coalesce) in the additive upsert; removing the receipts on-or-after-since gate; `+ 0` instead of `+ 1` in the migration; dropping the exclusive-end rule. - The raw-records repository no longer carries an unpriced measure (unused by the summary, and it could only ever say 0); the since fragment and payload measure list live in one shared module. - Docs/CHANGELOG: rollback past 2.28.0 needs unpriced_since moved forward on re-upgrade; router_cost_basis_total counts unknown attempts that reached an account. Tests are independent of each other and avoid the midnight edge. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

db-usage-unpriced-data-layer
Adds an unpriced_attempts measure to the daily usage rollup and history repository read path. Migration 0035 adds the columns and seeds unpriced_since; the read path masks pre-since days to null.
concern-tests
Server-side unpriced behaviour is pinned by real-HTTP tests on both serving paths plus the since passthrough; the only gap is client-side — the new addTotals unpriced merge and wire parse ship with no test.
New suites pin storage, since-gating, boundaries, repair and read paths tightly; two minor gaps: the token-less success combination is unpinned, and the state-row backup in the delete test selects unfiltered.
concern-api-contract
No contract surface breaks: the new unpriced wire field, the two nullable columns and the optional contribution-payload key are additive with a documented rollback path, and every reshaped signature (historySums(window), narrowed read returns) left no caller unupdated.
Contract verdict: the pinned read shape ({ attempts, since } with the 'infinity' sentinel and null-never-0 pre-since windows) is coherent across storage, receipts and breakdown and breaks no existing caller; one minor fragility in the state-row restore test.
concern-style-nits
Style concern: no misleading names, stale comments or dead code; two nits — a thrice-repeated magic slice(0, 9) and a last-write-wins since in the web totals fold that trusts a comment instead of checking.
Style verdict: both new test files read clearly and their comments match the behavior they assert; only nits are an unfiltered state-row save/restore and a twice-duplicated legacy payload literal.
api-usage-read (handoff)
Counts token-using unpriced attempts in the usage read and deletes the api-side two-table stitch (aggregate.ts, splitWindow/sumTotals) in favor of the db-side projection; version 2.30.0. Logic is coherent; one gap — no read-path test pins the documented legacy/request-table NULL projection.
web-usage-client (handoff)
Web client passes the new unpriced field through cleanly: null-propagating sums in addTotals, pass-through in parseTotals, EMPTY_TOTALS sentinel — consistent with the stated server rule. Risk: the client-side mapping and null branch ship with zero web-side test coverage.
db-usage-unpriced-data-layer (handoff)
Adds the unpriced-attempts measure end to end — migration 0035, payloads, additive upsert, since-gated reads — with null-means-unmeasured held consistently and tests pinning counting, gating and repair. Gap: the migration's upgrade-only ON CONFLICT branch is never executed by any test.
No findings from: api-usage-read, web-usage-client, release-bump-docs, concern-security.

minor · test The new client-side addTotals unpriced merge (all-null stays null, measured rows coalesce to a sum) and the unpriced parse in usage-wire.ts ship with no test, so a regression that turns a pre-measurement null into a false 0 passes CI — the coverage-gap class of kb:review/pr-152. The unpriced coalescing in addTotals is still untested: the diff only edited a SQL migration and a server-side integration test in packages/db/test/integration/usage-unpriced.test.ts. No unit test over sumTotals (line 207) pins the all-null or mixed null+measured outcomes, so the regression window the finding flagged remains open.

minor · test The ON CONFLICT branch runs only on upgraded installs where the v2 state row predates 0035; the fresh-DB fixture never executes it, so a regression leaves unpriced_since NULL on every upgrade and the measure dies silently (kb:review/learnings). Add a case that nulls unpriced_since on an existing v2 row and re-runs this statement, asserting it is set.

Re-checked at 262533414d43: still open at packages/db/test/integration/usage-unpriced.test.ts:58. The only test-file change adds a WHERE clause to an existing SELECT; no new test was added that nulls unpriced_since on a pre-existing v2 row and re-runs the migration to assert the ON CONFLICT branch sets it. The defect remains.

minor · bug ON CONFLICT coalesce(table.col, 0) + excluded.col for unpriced_attempts returns NULL when excluded.col is NULL, nullifying any existing non-NULL value. The 'not measured wins' comment assumes pre-measure rows only exist pre-since, which isn't enforced anywhere — a repair that pulled only pre-measure rows for an already-measured day would silently lose the measurement.

Re-checked at 262533414d43: still open at packages/db/src/repositories/usage-contribution-aggregate.ts:64. The coalesce(table.col, 0) + excluded.col expression is unchanged: if excluded.unpriced_attempts is NULL, the sum is NULL and the existing measurement is lost. The diff only touched the migration's initial since value and a test query — neither addresses the NULL-propagation defect.

minor · test Only the token-less failure pins 0; a token-less success on an unknown basis is untested, so a predicate keyed on outcome instead of token use passes this whole suite. Fold both outcomes into this case (kb:review/learnings coverage-gap class).

Re-checked at 262533414d43: still open at packages/db/test/unit/repositories/usage-contribution-unpriced.test.ts:35. The token-less test still only exercises outcome "upstream_error"; the "success" branch on an unknown basis with zero tokens remains uncovered, so a predicate keyed on outcome instead of token use still passes the suite.

… unpriced #240's fixture restates the admin usage wire totals; this PR makes unpriced a required field on them, so the merged tree did not typecheck. The fixture now sends a measured zero; the layout gate still passes (243 checks). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

concern-tests
Four test gaps in the new unpriced measure: HTTP pre-since null projection and legacy usageDaily source path unpinned, web parseTotals and addTotals unpriced merge uncovered.
Two coverage gaps the prior reviewers' flagged regressions would slip past: the unit test only exercises token-less failure, and the integration test never proves a pre-measure NULL repair preserves an existing measurement.
concern-api-contract
The unpriced widening on the wire and the read-repository narrow are by design, but the upsert's coalesce(existing,0)+excluded actively writes NULL over measured unpriced_attempts whenever the new sum is NULL — a one-way corruption that violates the "NULL = not measured" contract the new field…
No new contract violations in the integration/unit test slice; the assertions pin the {attempts, since} shape, NULL pre-measure semantics, and idempotency correctly.
concern-style-nits
Two nits: a magic-number slice and an incomplete comment.
Test files use clear names and accurate docstrings; no comment overpromises a guarantee the assertions don't pin down.
No findings from: feature-stack-unpriced, release-plumbing, concern-security.

major · bug The unpriced_attempts ON CONFLICT branch computes coalesce(table.col, 0) + excluded.col, which evaluates to NULL in standard SQL whenever excluded.col is NULL — and it is NULL whenever the group sums any payload that lacks the field (every pre-2.30.0 receipt, every request-terminal payload).

Closes #220. Part of #216.
What
Unpriced traffic is counted instead of reading as $0. The usage API reports

An attempt whose cost basis is

usage_attempt_daily_v2.unpriced_attempts bigint, nullable. NULL means not measured, and nothing is back-filled.grain(), so request rows don't carry it.usage_history_state.unpriced_since dateis written by insert-or-update as the day after the migration runs. Thev2row is created lazily, so an UPDATE alone would leave a fresh install without one.router_cost_basis_total, which also counts them; the docs say so.historySourceprojects the measure from all four parts: the v2 attempt table, NULL for the legacy and request tables, and the receipts query that answerstoday.
