Follow-ups from the review of #1954.

Problem

1. Sidebar state written while closing. While the client closes, MicrobotPluginManager stops the Hub plugins, and ClientUI.removeNavigation removes their tabs. When the removed tab was the open one, it called openPanel(entry.navBtn, entry.sidebarOpen) with an older history entry. That goes through toggleSidebar, which writes runelite.clientSidebarClosed whenever the visibility changes. #1954 stopped the tab write but not this one.

In the real client, the reachable case is the reverse of the one named in the review. Removing the selected tab while the sidebar is visible makes JTabbedPane select a neighbour, and the change listener pushes (visible, neighbour), so the fallback matches the current state and nothing is written. When the sidebar is hidden, the listener pushes nothing. The fallback is then an older (true, X) entry, so the sidebar reopens and clientSidebarClosed is unset during the exit window. A user who closed the sidebar can therefore get it back open on the next start. I reproduced this live (see Testing).

2. Console appender lost after a logback reset. In dev runs from an exploded classpath, logback.xml (scan="true") can trigger a reconfiguration. The LoggerContext reset detaches and stops the programmatically attached ConsoleLogAppender. The new STDOUT ConsoleAppender targets System.out again, which is the console tee. The review said the console stops receiving lines, but that is not quite what happens: lines keep reaching the panel through the tee, in the long STDOUT format. The console appender stays detached for the rest of the session, and the STDOUT binding from #1951/#1954 is gone. If the appender were reattached without rebinding STDOUT, every line would show twice.

Change

  • ClientUI.removeNavigation: while closing (the flag fix(ui): keep the saved sidebar tab and stdout intact while closing #1954 added), call openPanel(entry.navBtn, sidebar.isVisible()). The sidebar keeps its current visibility, toggleSidebar returns early, and no clientSidebarClosed write happens in either direction. Outside closing, behaviour is unchanged. This is a one-line change in the upstream file. The rest of the ClientUI diff replaces the five appender-setup lines with ConsoleLogAppender.install(...) and drops the now-unused Logger import.
  • ConsoleLogAppender is now a reset-resistant LoggerContextListener, installed through install(context, stdout, consumer):
    • onReset: restarts the appender, reattaches it to root, and marks a STDOUT rebind as pending. onReset runs before the new configuration exists, so the rebind cannot happen there.
    • append: while a rebind is pending, runs bindStdoutAppenders. The pending flag clears only once at least one STDOUT appender was actually bound. A line logged between the reset and the end of reconfiguration therefore does not use up the rebind. The appender is attached before the new STDOUT on root, so the first line after reconfiguration is rebound before STDOUT writes it, which prevents double lines.
    • onStop: detaches and stops itself, because LoggerContext.stop() calls reset() first.
    • uninstall() removes the listener (the tests use it).

Testing

  • ./gradlew :client:runUnitTests --offline: 2368 tests, 0 failures, 2 skipped.
  • New tests, each checked to fail without its fix:
    • ClientUITest.removingTheOpenTabWhileClosingDoesNotReopenAClosedSidebar: without the fix it fails with NeverWantedButInvoked: unsetConfiguration("runelite", "clientSidebarClosed"). The test helper's change listener now pushes history like the real ClientUI listener, so the history matches the live client.
    • ConsoleLogAppenderTest.reconfigurationKeepsTheConsoleAppenderAndStdoutBinding: real JoranConfigurator reset and reconfigure. With no listener (the old code), the console appender gets 0 lines (expected:<1> but was:<0>). With reattach but no rebind, the line also reaches the panel through the tee (expected:<0> but was:<1>, a double line).
    • ConsoleLogAppenderTest.lineLoggedBeforeReconfigurationEndsDoesNotLeaveStdoutUnbound: logs between reset and reconfigure. It fails the same two ways.
    • ConsoleLogAppenderTest.stoppingTheLoggerContextDetachesTheConsoleAppender guards the new onStop. It also passes on the old code, because there was no listener.
  • Live, on the shaded jar from this branch, without logging in:
    • Logback: I started the client with -Dlogback.configurationFile set to a copy of the config with scanPeriod="1 seconds", and a probe bumped the file's mtime twice. The status list showed 2 × "Will reset and reconfigure context". After each reset the root appenders were ConsoleLogAppender (started), STDOUT (stream = CloseShieldOutputStream) and FILE. Probe lines logged after the reset appeared once in the panel, in the short console format, and once in stdout.
    • Sidebar, using a probe nav button: open it, close the sidebar, then remove the button. With closing=true the sidebar stayed hidden and clientSidebarClosed stayed true. With closing=false (the pre-fix path) the sidebar reopened and the key was unset.
    • Normal close: with the sidebar open on Notes, I closed the window and confirmed the exit dialog. The profile then had clientSidebarTab=Notes and no clientSidebarClosed. After a restart the sidebar was visible with Notes selected. I restored the original state (no saved tab) afterwards.

Not verified: no Hub plugin with a sidebar panel was installed in the test profile. I exercised the closing path with a probe nav button and a forced closing flag, not with a real Hub plugin being stopped at exit. I also did not reproduce the race where a config flush persists the value during the exit window; the change removes the write itself.

…ack resets

While the client closes, removing the open Hub tab fell back to an older
history entry and opened or closed the sidebar to match it, which wrote
runelite.clientSidebarClosed during the exit window. removeNavigation now
keeps the current sidebar visibility while closing, so toggleSidebar is a
no-op and nothing is written.

A logback reset (scan=true reconfiguration) detached and stopped the
console appender, and the recreated STDOUT ConsoleAppender wrote through
the System.out tee again. ConsoleLogAppender is now a reset-resistant
LoggerContextListener: on reset it reattaches itself and rebinds the
STDOUT appenders to the real stdout on the first event after the new
configuration attaches them. On context stop it detaches itself.

Walkthrough

ClientUI now preserves the sidebar’s current visibility when it removes a navigation entry during shutdown. ConsoleLogAppender now installs and uninstalls as a logger context listener, reattaches after context resets, and retries stdout binding during append. Tests cover sidebar shutdown behavior and appender routing across reset and shutdown.

Custom file-only or stderr-only logging can incur avoidable CPU work after a reset. This is a bounded merge risk; rate-limit rebinding attempts.

Rate-limit pending stdout rebinding attempts.

The supported shaded-jar launch path permits a -Dlogback.configurationFile override before -jar. With a valid file-only or stderr-only configuration, ConsoleLogAppender remains installed after a reset, but bindStdoutAppenders returns false. Each log event then scans every logger and its appenders.

This adds avoidable per-event CPU work that grows with the logger and appender count. Retry at a bounded rate while rebindPending is true. Keep retrying so a later configuration that adds STDOUT can still rebind it.
