Problem

Follow-up from the #1955 review. MicrobotPlugin.startUp attached GameChatAppender and ScriptErrorReporter to the root logger directly. A LoggerContext.reset() (the scan="true" reconfiguration in logback.xml, which reloads in dev runs from an exploded classpath) calls root.recursiveReset(), which detaches and stops every root appender. Nothing put these two back, so game-chat logging and error telemetry silently stopped for the rest of the session.

Two smaller issues in the same code:

  • shutDown only stopped GameChatAppender and never detached it, so every plugin restart left another stopped appender on the root logger.
  • fix(ui): keep sidebar state and console logging across close and logback resets #1955 judge nit: ConsoleLogAppender.append kept rebindPending set until it found a STDOUT ConsoleAppender. If a reconfiguration had no STDOUT appender, every later log line called context.getLoggerList() (which copies and sorts all loggers) for the rest of the session.

Change

  • New net.runelite.client.util.ResetResistantAttachment: a reset-resistant LoggerContextListener that holds one appender. It is the fix(ui): keep sidebar state and console logging across close and logback resets #1955 pattern, pulled out of ConsoleLogAppender so all three appenders share it.
    • attach(context, appender, onReset) registers the listener and adds the appender to root.
    • On every reset it runs onReset to restart the appender, then re-adds it. Logger.addAppender is add-if-absent, so the appender is attached exactly once. If onReset throws, the error goes to the logback status manager, the appender is still re-added, and the other listeners still run.
    • On context stop it detaches and stops the appender.
    • remove() removes the listener, detaches the appender and stops it, so plugin restarts do not leak listeners.
  • ConsoleLogAppender no longer implements LoggerContextListener itself. It installs through the helper, and uninstall() calls remove().
  • GameChatAppender.install(context, enabled) and ScriptErrorReporter.install(context) own their wiring. MicrobotPlugin calls them in startUp and calls remove() on both attachments when the plugin stops.
    • After a reset, GameChatAppender restarts only when game chat logging is enabled, as before.
    • ScriptErrorReporter.start() now returns early when the reporter is already started, so the 5-minute flush task can never be scheduled twice.
  • The STDOUT rebind is bounded. After a reset, ConsoleLogAppender tries to rebind on at most MAX_REBIND_ATTEMPTS = 1000 log events, then stops looking. A successful rebind ends the search right away, as before.

Telemetry gating is unchanged. ScriptErrorReporter still drops everything when disableTelemetry / microbot.disableTelemetry is set. The new tests use a mocked MicrobotApi and a mocked executor, so they send nothing.

Testing

  • ./gradlew :client:runUnitTests --offline: BUILD SUCCESSFUL, 2379 passed, 2 skipped, 0 failed.
  • New tests:
    • ResetResistantAttachmentTest (6 tests): reattached once after a reset, still attached once after 3 resets, remove() leaves no listener and no attachment, remove-then-reattach gives one listener, a failing restart still reattaches, context stop detaches.
    • ScriptErrorReporterTest (+3): an installed reporter keeps collecting errors after a reset and its flush task is scheduled exactly twice (install + reset); reinstall then reset counts an error once; a removed reporter ignores errors.
    • GameChatAppenderTest (+2): an installed appender still mirrors a WARN to chat after a reset and stops after remove(); a disabled appender stays stopped after a reset.
    • ConsoleLogAppenderTest (+2): the rebind is still pending after 999 lines with no STDOUT and stops at line 1000; uninstall() leaves no listener.
  • Checked that the tests fail without the fix:
    • Making onReset a no-op fails 10 tests: 4 in ResetResistantAttachmentTest, both reset tests for the installed reporter, the game-chat reset test, and 3 ConsoleLogAppender reconfiguration tests.
    • Restoring the unbounded rebind, dropping removeListener from remove(), and letting onReset exceptions escape together fail 5 tests: the bound test, the uninstall test, and 3 helper tests.
  • Live check: I built the shaded jar, started the client (-Dmicrobot.disableTelemetry=true, not logged in) and deployed a probe that reset LoggerContext twice and reconfigured it from the bundled logback.xml.
    • Before the resets the root logger had ConsoleAppender/STDOUT, RollingFileAppender/FILE, ConsoleLogAppender, GAME_CHAT and SCRIPT_ERROR_REPORTER, all started, plus 3 attachment listeners.
    • After the first and the second reset it had the same 5 appenders, all started, and still 3 listeners.
    • The probe's post-reset log line appeared once in stdout and once in client.log, so it was not duplicated through the System.out tee.
    • The probe was undeployed and the client stopped afterwards.

Not verified:

  • A real scan="true" file-change reload. The shaded jar's logback.xml is inside the jar, so logback does not watch it; the probe called reset() + JoranConfigurator directly, which are the calls the scan task makes.
  • Game-chat output in a logged-in session after a reset. Only the attachment and started state were checked live.
  • A MicrobotPlugin stop/start cycle in the running client. The plugin is always on; this path is covered only by the unit tests.
  • LoggerContext's listener list is a plain ArrayList in logback 1.2.9, so a remove() racing a reset on the scan thread is still unsynchronised, as it was for ConsoleLogAppender.uninstall before.

…logback resets

MicrobotPlugin attached GameChatAppender and ScriptErrorReporter to the
root logger directly. A LoggerContext reset (logback.xml scan=true
reconfiguration) detaches and stops every root appender, so game-chat
logging and error telemetry silently stopped for the rest of the session.
Plugin shutdown also left the stopped GameChatAppender attached.

ResetResistantAttachment is a reset-resistant LoggerContextListener that
attaches an appender to the root logger, restarts and reattaches it after
every reset (exactly once, addAppender is idempotent), detaches it when the
context stops, and on remove() drops the listener, detaches and stops the
appender. ConsoleLogAppender, GameChatAppender and ScriptErrorReporter all
install through it; MicrobotPlugin removes both attachments on shutdown.
GameChatAppender only restarts when game chat logging is enabled, and
ScriptErrorReporter.start() is idempotent so the flush task is never
scheduled twice.

ConsoleLogAppender now gives up rebinding STDOUT after 1000 log events
following a reset, instead of scanning the logger list on every line
forever when the new configuration has no STDOUT appender.

Walkthrough

The changes add a shared ResetResistantAttachment for Logback appenders. Game-chat logging, script-error reporting, and console logging use the helper to restore attachments after context resets. Microbot startup installs the logging attachments, and shutdown removes them. Console logging also retries stdout binding for a limited number of append attempts after a reset. Tests cover reset handling, removal, restart failures, and stdout rebinding.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 00aea

The new reset-resistant logging attachments work as intended in normal use. In a rare case, shutting down the plugin while Logback reloads its configuration can interrupt the reload or leave an appender attached. Adding synchronization around removal and reset would close this gap, but it is unlikely to cause widespread failures.

Coordinate removal with reset before detaching the appender.

If plugin shutdown overlaps a Logback reset, removeListener(this) can modify the listener list while Logback iterates it. The reset can then throw ConcurrentModificationException after it has stopped the root appenders. A reset callback can also pass the removed check before removal and reattach the appender afterward. Coordinate these lifecycle operations so removal cannot interrupt listener iteration or leave an appender attached after shutdown. Logback 1.2.9 uses a mutable ArrayList for these callbacks.
