Follow-up to #1942 with the fixes from its pre-merge review.

Changes

  • Proxy key: the shared budget was keyed by SOCKS host only. Many residential proxy gateways give each port or each session username its own exit IP on the same host, so those clients shared one 390/93 budget and waited far more than needed. The key is now host, port and a SHA-256 hash of the proxy username (the username itself is not written to the file). ProxyConfiguration keeps the username for this.
  • Clock set backwards: a stored updatedAt in the future meant no refill until the wall clock caught up. Reading the budget now moves that timestamp back to now.
  • Corrupt token value: NaN, Infinity or a negative token count in the file made hopToWorld wait forever. These are now treated like any other corrupt value: a full budget.
  • Refill rate 0: only reachable by editing the profile, it made waits endless and the status text negative. configure now clamps it to at least 1 per hour.
  • Safer writes: the file is written to a temporary file and moved over the old one, under a separate microbot-hop-budget.properties.lock. A crash mid-write can no longer leave a shorter number.
  • Thread check first: on the client thread and the Swing thread, awaitHopBudget now uses this client's last known state and doesn't touch the file or wait for its lock. persistTo reads the file once at startup, so that state is never an unread file treated as a full budget.
  • Long waits: the longest wait (after a real lockout empties the budget) is about 13 minutes, longer than the 5-minute idle logout. While waiting, awaitHopBudget now:
    • returns false as soon as the player is logged out;
    • presses backspace a random 60–200s before the client's idle timeout, the same key Rs2Reflection already uses. It reuses Rs2Player.checkIdleLogout, so it follows the Logout Timer plugin's setting. It skips the press while the chatbox or an input dialog has typed text.
  • Rs2Player.checkIdleLogout now reads the idle counters on the client thread, which removes its entry from the client-thread guardrail baseline.
  • Docs: ARCHITECTURE.md updated.

Not included: CodeRabbit's atomic-admission suggestion from #1942. The reviewer judged it non-blocking: the overdraw is bounded by the number of clients hopping at the same moment, and doesn't build up over time. A proper fix needs reserve/refund/expiry bookkeeping.

Upgrade notes

  • Budgets saved under the old proxy key (proxy.<host>) are no longer read, so proxy users start from a full budget once after upgrading. The direct key is unchanged.
  • While old and new client versions run at the same time on one machine, they lock different files, so their writes aren't coordinated. This lasts until all clients are updated.

Testing

  • :client:runUnitTests: 2,312 passed, 0 failed. New HopBudgetTest cases:
    • proxy port and username give separate keys, the key doesn't contain the username, and usernames with equal hashCode still get separate keys;
    • a fresh client sees an exhausted shared file through the cached check;
    • NaN, Infinity and negative tokens are treated as a full budget;
    • writes leave only the data and lock files;
    • refill resumes after the clock goes back an hour;
    • a refill rate of 0 is clamped;
    • the cached wait reflects only this client's last read.
  • Live test on an F2P account with a runtime-deployed probe (allowance 25, reserve 24, 10 per hour):
    • Login and hops were counted; the lock file was created and no temporary file was left.
    • Hop 1 went through immediately.
    • Hop 2 waited 356s, longer than the default 5-minute idle logout, and then landed. That build pressed backspace at a fixed 100–200s idle, and each press reset keyboard idle (seen twice). The player staying logged in proves nothing here, because this profile's Logout Timer is set above 5 minutes.
    • Hop 3: the probe logged out 35s into the wait, and hopToWorld returned false within 1s without hopping.
  • Live, after the review fixes: same probe. Hop 2 waited 357s and landed; hop 3 stopped within 1s of the logout. This profile has the Logout Timer plugin set above 5 minutes, so idle reached about 5m50s with no key press and the player stayed logged in, as the configured timeout allows.

- Key the shared budget by SOCKS host, port and a hash of the proxy
  username, so rotating-port and session-user gateways get one budget
  per exit IP instead of sharing one.
- Repair a stored timestamp from the future so refill resumes after the
  clock goes backwards.
- Treat non-finite or negative stored tokens as corrupt instead of
  waiting forever.
- Clamp the refill rate to at least 1 per hour.
- Write the budget to a temporary file and move it into place under a
  separate lock file, so a crash mid-write can't leave a short number.
- Check the calling thread before reading the file; the client and
  Swing threads use this client's last known state.
- While waiting for a hop, stop if the player is logged out and press
  backspace before the idle logout, as Rs2Reflection already does.

Walkthrough

HopBudget now builds proxy keys from the sanitized host, optional port, and a hash of the proxy username. It adds cached delay reads, clamps the refill rate, normalizes future timestamps, and revises file locking and replacement. Microbot uses cached delays for client-thread and Swing-EDT callers. Other callers stop waiting when logged out and may press Backspace after a randomized idle threshold.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e263c

A fresh client can hop despite an exhausted saved budget, so cached admission should be fixed before merging. Distinct proxy usernames can also share a budget key, and the new wait loop needs to follow the client-thread access rule.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Clear the username when proxy credentials change.

If setupProxy configures an authenticated proxy and later configures one without credentials, username retains the first proxy’s username. HopBudget.networkKey() then selects the wrong budget key. Assign username = user for both credential states, before the authenticator check.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Do not treat an unknown cached state as a full persisted budget.

After a fresh client calls persistTo, FileStore.peek() can return a null seed without reading the existing budget file. refill(null, now) then reports a full budget. A client-thread hop can pass the check even when the persisted budget is exhausted. Initialize the cached state off the client thread before allowing cached admission, or reject admission while that state is unknown.

- Read idle counters and chat input on the client thread, and reuse
  Rs2Player.checkIdleLogout so the keep-alive follows the client's
  configured idle timeout; checkIdleLogout now reads on the client
  thread too, which drops its guardrail baseline entry.
- Skip the keep-alive backspace while the chatbox or an input dialog
  holds typed text.
- Hash the proxy username with SHA-256 instead of String.hashCode.
- Read the shared file once in persistTo so the client- and Swing-thread
  check never mistakes an unread file for a full budget.
- Always set the proxy username, clearing it for proxies without one.
