image-builder: ISO types ignore bootc composefs backend / UKI (anaconda ostreecontainer) #90

Open

Description

@cgwalters-bot

From review of forge image-builder#4: manifestForLegacyISO/manifestForISO don't consult composefs-backend (or UKI), so an anaconda ostreecontainer install silently produces an ostree system. Pre-existing. Relates to the Anaconda composefs stretch item. Also: customizations.bootloader could be allowed for composefs BLS (grub2.d console.cfg uses bootupd mounts).

    Parked until bootc-dev/bootc#2300 lands, per D8 (#244, A).

Triage (21 Oct 2026): valid and still present on upstream main. The full fix stays parked on bootc-dev/bootc#2300 as decided in D8 (#244, A), but one small slice does not depend on it: make the two Anaconda ISO types fail or warn up front instead of silently installing an ostree system. The plan for that slice is below, wrapped, because it can't be dispatched yet (see "Unclear").

Reproducible from the code (osbuild/image-builder main f43ddf4):

    • manifestForISO and manifestForLegacyISO never read bd.unifiedKernel; only manifestForDisk does. Nothing in pkg/bootc detects a composefs-native container (the only composefs reference is raw_bootc.go:172-174, UKI implies composefs for the disk install stage).
    • Both ISOs write an ostreecontainer kickstart plus a %post running bootc switch --mutate-in-place (anaconda_installer_iso_tree.go:675-692). Anaconda's ostreecontainer path is an ostree deploy, so a composefs-native container is installed with the ostree backend. For a UKI container bootc itself only installs with composefs (install.rs:1812-1819); what Anaconda's ostree deploy of one does is untested, and at best it is an ostree system too. Neither case is reported. The disk type got the equivalent warnings upstream in osbuild/image-builder#2730 (merged 7 Oct); the ISO types did not.

What changed since D8 (2 Oct), which matters for the eventual full fix (#96), not for this slice:

    • bootc v1.17.0/v1.17.1 ship both #2483 (install mount) and #2500 (composefs chosen from the container); D8 called #2483 "closed", it was merged on 28 Sep.
    • Anaconda has had a bootc kickstart command since pykickstart F43 (commit a4133027, Aug 2025) that runs bootc install to-filesystem --bootloader=grub --karg=... (installation.py:846-865), and osbuild's kickstart stage supports it (bootc option, osbuild 09466dbc). image-builder has no NewKickstartStageOptionsWithBootc yet (kickstart_stage.go). But Anaconda's post-install still assumes an ostree deployment: PrepareBootcMountTargetsTask bind-mounts physroot into sysroot and FinalizeBootcTask skips when get_ostree_deployment_path finds nothing (L1121-1124). That is exactly what bootc#2300 (--[re]assemble-root, still a design issue with no PR) and bootc#2513 are for, so the parking decision stands.
    • A likely extra blocker to verify when image-builder: anaconda ISO with composefs backend (stretch) #96 is unparked: Anaconda's bootc task writes /etc/ostree/prepare-root.conf into the installer's own root if missing (L830-838), and bootc reads that file from the running root to decide the default backend (install.rs:1794-1819, defaults_to_composefs_backend). Since bootc_iso's installer root is the target container itself, that workaround would steer a composefs-native image back to ostree even with the bootc kickstart command.
    • The issue's second point (allow customizations.bootloader on composefs BLS disks) is already how draft cgwalters-forge/image-builder#7 behaves: it refuses the bootloader customization and the grub2.d console.cfg stage only for UKI images, so BLS composefs disks keep them. Nothing to add here.

What fixing the slice takes: one small PR in image-builder. Detect a composefs-native container in the resolver the way bootc does (/usr/lib/composefs/setup-root-conf.toml present and no ostree prepare-root.conf); closed draft cgwalters-forge/image-builder#4 already has that as commit 39935a2b9 (composefsBackend() in pkg/bootc/resolver.go) with tests, and it can be cherry-picked. Then, in both ISO manifest functions: a UKI container is an error (the ISO cannot install it), a composefs-native non-UKI container is a manifest warning that the ISO installs the ostree backend. bootc_generic_iso installs nothing and is left alone.

    Unclear, for cgwalters:

    1. You parked image-builder: ISO types ignore bootc composefs backend / UKI (anaconda ostreecontainer) #90 until bootc#2300. This slice is only the diagnostic that #2730 and forge bootc: Add finalize-staged hold unit to fix /boot automount reboot hang (plan-44 flake) #2 give the disk type; if you would rather keep the whole item parked, ignore the plan.
    2. On forge composefs-rs: bootc-revdep.yml records a failed run on every push #4 you asked whether image-builder needs its own backend detection at all. For the ISO it cannot ask bootc at build time (Anaconda runs bootc later), so the choice is this duplicated check or first adding the backend to bootc container inspect in bootc. The plan takes the duplicated check; say so if you prefer the bootc-side change first.
    3. The plan can't be dispatched as is: cgwalters-forge/image-builder is not in dispatch.toml's repos and has issues disabled, and a plan's item must be an issue in its repo. As for #37, add the fork to the bounds, enable issues there, copy this task into a fork issue and post the plan on it with item set to that number.

"brief": "tracker#90, first slice: make the bootc_iso and bootc_legacy_iso image types stop silently installing an ostree system for containers built for the composefs backend. Staged draft PR for the fork; nothing goes upstream. Base: fork main synced with osbuild/image-builder main. (1) Cherry-pick commit 39935a2b9 from the closed PR cgwalters-forge/image-builder#4 (branch bot/bootc-composefs-backend): it adds composefsBackend() to pkg/bootc/resolver.go, detecting /usr/lib/composefs/setup-root-conf.toml with no etc/ostree or usr/lib/ostree prepare-root.conf, plus bootcInfo.ComposefsBackend and tests; drop any part of that commit that touches the disk path (pkg/manifest/raw_bootc.go, pkg/image/bootc_disk.go). Plumb the flag into BootcDistro in pkg/distro/defs/bootc.go next to unifiedKernel. (2) In pkg/distro/defs/bootc_imagetype.go, at the top of manifestForISO and manifestForLegacyISO: if bd.unifiedKernel, return an error saying the Anaconda ISO installs with ostree and cannot install a bootc container with a unified kernel (UKI), and point at the bootc_disk type; if bd.composefsBackend, return a manifest warning (the second return value, as #2730 and forge #2 do) saying the ISO installs the container with the ostree backend, not composefs. Leave bootc_generic_iso, bootc_disk and pxe_tar unchanged. (3) Tests in pkg/distro/defs/bootc_image_test.go using the existing fake bootc in pkg/distro/bootc/bootctest: UKI container plus bootc-installer or bootc-rpm-installer fails with that error; composefs-native container warns and still produces a manifest; a plain ostree container produces no new warning. (4) tools/gen-manifest-checksums.sh must report no checksum change on any commit, since no manifest for an ostree container changes. Run gofmt, go vet, and go test -count=1 ./pkg/bootc/... ./pkg/distro/... ./pkg/manifest/...; report each command and its exit status in the PR description, and say that no ISO was built or booted. PR description: one paragraph on what changes and why, linking tracker#90 and noting that the full composefs ISO install (tracker#96) waits for bootc-dev/bootc#2300."

Re-triage (28 Oct 2026): still valid and still present upstream, but nothing that blocked a plan has changed, so this is still waiting on cgwalters. I am not posting a plan. The 21 Oct triage still holds, as do its wrapped plan for the warn/error slice and its three open questions.

    What I checked:

Needed from cgwalters: decide whether the warn/error slice should go ahead while the rest stays parked, and whether it should use image-builder-side detection or wait for a bootc container inspect field. If it goes ahead, add the fork to the bounds and enable its issues, then post the plan from the 21 Oct comment on a fork issue.
