Retire or update bot-tmt-number once bootc tmt tests have no numbers #301

Open

Description

@cgwalters-bot

Repo: cgwalters-bot/homegit

bootc is dropping the tmt test numbers (prep PR for tracker#238: tests and plans are named by slug and the generated tmt files are one per test), so bin/bot-tmt-number and its reservations no longer have anything to reserve. Once that PR merges upstream: retire bot-tmt-number (script, the tmt-numbers board state item, its tests and docs), and drop the 'bootc tmt test numbers' rule from dotfiles/.agents/skills/coordinator/worker-preamble.md, replacing it with a pointer to tmt/tests/booted/README.md ('Adding a test').

    Hold: run 37637863292 was dispatched by accident at 14:34Z, when the board cleanup (#342) gave this untriaged item the Status Todo while it still carried the dispatch label. Its precondition is not met: the bootc change that drops test numbers (cgwalters-forge/bootc#41) is still a draft on the fork and nothing has merged upstream, so bot-tmt-number is still needed. Do not apply this run's patch until that has merged; then dispatch again.

    ✅ dispatch ended well. Result: #301 (comment)

    Triage (22 Oct 2026): obsolete, close as not planned. Every file this item would change is in cgwalters-bot/homegit, which is frozen: nothing is added to it and it is about to be archived (docs/homegit-freeze.md, table row "everything else: the local workers, ... the skills, docs" → dropped). No PR is needed.

    Evidence:

    • bin/bot-tmt-number and the "bootc tmt test numbers" rule (worker-preamble.md L30) still exist, but only homegit's local coordinator workers used them. The workstation supervisor and sweep that ran those workers were stopped and disabled on 22 Oct (freeze doc, step 1). Archiving the repo (step 3) retires the script, its board state and docs along with everything else.
    • Neither the hosted harness (dispatch.yml/poll.yml here) nor agenthome or agent-board reserves tmt numbers or carries this rule. A code search for bot-tmt-number and tmt in those repositories found nothing. Caveat: GitHub code search may not have indexed every repository.
    • The precondition hasn't been met either way. tmt: Generate one file per test and plan, drop test numbers bootc#41 was closed in favour of upstream tmt: Generate one file per test and plan, drop test numbers bootc-dev/bootc#2581 ("drop test numbers"), which is still open and unmerged. Upstream tmt/tests/booted/ still holds numbered tests (test-01-readonly.nu, test-44-..., test-49-...) next to slug-named ones.

    One point for cgwalters, not a blocker for closing: until #2581 merges, hosted runs that add a bootc tmt test have no number reservation, so two of them in parallel can collide on a number (the same problem as #238). If that matters, it belongs in a new item against agenthome's instructions, not here. Once #2581 merges, the README's "Adding a test" section makes it moot.
