Closes the deferred P3 from #176: registerClient({ document: D }) then relaunch({ window: W }) made the hydration listener watch W.document while launch uses D (explicit document wins), losing hydration errors during that relaunch window.

The client now keeps the raw document/window (merged per key like core's relaunchWith) and resolves the target with launch's precedence. Tests use distinguishable documents (previously {} compared equal); two mutants verified caught.

…, as launch does

The hydration target was recomputed from the latest options, so registerClient({ document }) then relaunch({ window }) watched the window's
document while the launch used the explicit one. Keep the raw document/window and resolve with launch's precedence.

Review of PR #178: astro relaunch keeps an explicit document over a later window

  • Read the diff, the surrounding code and the tests
  • Compared against core relaunchWith, RELAUNCH_KEPT_OPTIONS and launch's document resolution
  • Posted the review

I found no real bugs or regressions, and I did not run the tests or tooling. This is a read-through only.

What I checked

  • Precedence matches launch. launchDocument returns the explicit document if it is defined. Otherwise it reads window.document inside a try/catch. This is the same order as packages/browser/src/launch.ts:964-975 (options.document ?? <guarded window.document>). The launch window and the launch no longer disagree, which fixes the P3 from feat(core): frame.origin = 'call' marker (async origin capture, step 1) #176.
  • Merge matches core. relaunchWith spreads { ...keptOptions(last.options), ...options }. RELAUNCH_KEPT_OPTIONS includes window, document, carrier and onError (packages/core/src/carrier.ts:266-272). Keeping the raw document and window and merging each key separately reproduces that. The earlier code collapsed them into a single resolved target and lost the precedence information.
  • Hostile window. A throwing window.document getter yields no target, so the listener falls back to its default (globalThis.document). The new test covers this. The getter is read again on every registerClient or relaunch, but only inside the guarded path, so repeated reads are harmless.
  • State handling. last is assigned before start(), so a failed launch still leaves the merged options for the next relaunch. That is the same behaviour as before the PR. Core also records the options when it launches, so I don't see it as a regression.
  • Tests. Using distinguishable { id } documents fixes the real weakness in the old tests, where {} compared equal to any other {}. The new tests cover both directions. An explicit document on the relaunch still wins over the kept one. A later window alone does not displace an explicit document.

Minor note (P3, not blocking)

Core's { ...kept, ...options } lets an explicitly passed undefined override a kept key. For example, relaunch({ document: undefined }) drops the kept document, and launch then falls back to the window. This PR ignores undefined (!== undefined checks), so it keeps the old document. Because setCarrierLastLaunch filters out undefined values, only a relaunch that passes an explicit undefined can show the difference. This is unlikely and the effect is limited to one hydration window. I'd leave it alone. If you want exact parity, test 'document' in options instead.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The change is small, local to the Astro client, and has no effect on the core or browser packages.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve and merge. I can't approve formally.
  3. Most important issues: None. The only thing to consider is the optional undefined parity note above.
  4. Positives:
    • The precedence is now written in one place (launchDocument) and mirrors launch.
    • The raw-state-plus-resolve design avoids the lossy merge.
    • The comments say why, and the tests use distinguishable values.
    • The PR description says two mutants were verified caught, which matches the repo's mutator-loop standard.

  • Bug Fixes
    • Client relaunches now retain previously successful launch options unless you explicitly override them, including with undefined.
    • Relaunches wait for any pending launch to finish before proceeding, helping prevent overlapping operations from using outdated settings.
    • Failed launches no longer replace remembered options, and hydration listeners receive the appropriate document when available.

The Astro client now tracks raw launch options and the last successful client. Fresh registrations use their supplied options. Relaunches merge remembered options with explicitly supplied keys, including keys set to undefined. Relaunch waits for a preceding operation to settle before reading remembered options. Tests cover document selection, failed operations, overlapping operations, and listener options.

A fresh registration no longer merges with earlier calls (core's plain launch carries nothing over), a relaunch builds on the remembered
options, the state moves only after a successful start, a repeat registration (the same live client) changes nothing, and an explicit
undefined overwrites a kept value as core's spread does.

Review of PR #178 (re-run after the second commit): astro relaunch keeps an explicit document over a later window

I found no real bugs or regressions. This was a read-through only. I did not run the tests, typecheck or lint.

Earlier note is fixed

The first review's P3 was that an explicit undefined on a relaunch should override a kept key, as core's { ...kept, ...options } does. Commit 506709c1 fixes it: pick() tests key in options, and there is a test for relaunch({ document: undefined, … }).

Core also drops undefined values when it records lastLaunch (setCarrierLastLaunch, packages/core/src/carrier.ts:308-322), so the next relaunch loses that key in core too. Remembering undefined here matches that.

What I re-checked against core

  • Remember only after success. withHydrationWindow moves remembered only after start() resolves (packages/astro/src/client.ts:86-91). Core's launchCore calls setCarrierLastLaunch only after a build that produced internals (packages/browser/src/launch.ts:720-723). A failed relaunch leaves core's last-launch options unchanged, and now leaves the Astro ones unchanged too. The new failure test covers both launch and relaunch.
  • The repeat-registration guard works.
    • It relies on a repeat launch returning the same client object.
    • launchCore returns alreadyLaunched with internals: undefined (packages/browser/src/launch.ts:755-763).
    • The umbrella's withPerformanceFacade mutates the client in place and returns that same object (packages/bugsee/src/performance-facade.ts:32-45).
    • So client !== lastClient is false on a repeat registration and the remembered options stay put.
    • A relaunch always builds a new client, so it always updates them.
  • A fresh registration starts from {}. After stop(), core launches with only the new call's options, and registerClient passes {} as base, which matches.
  • launchDocument follows launch's precedence: an explicit document first, then a guarded window.document.

Observations, no action needed

  • A relaunch() before any registerClient (for example the client was launched through another entry) starts from remembered = {}. The listener then uses its default target even though core kept a document. This was already the case before the PR.
  • Two concurrent registerClient calls with different options could update remembered in a different order than core records lastLaunch. I could not tie it to a realistic Astro flow, so I'm not reporting it.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The change is local to @bugsee/astro's client and touches no core or browser code.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve and merge. I can't approve formally.
  3. Most important issues: None.
  4. Positives:
    • Keeping raw document and window and resolving the target in one place (launchDocument) removes the lossy merge.
    • The "remember only on success" and "ignore repeat registrations" behaviour mirrors core.
    • The tests use distinguishable { id } documents, so they no longer compare equal by accident, and they cover precedence, explicit undefined, failure and repeat registration.
      · branch fix/astro-relaunch-hydration-target

…s told the carrier and sink explicitly

A relaunch now reads the remembered options only after a pending launch has settled, as core's relaunchWith does, and the carrier/onError are
always passed so an explicit undefined replaces what the hydration listener kept.

Review of PR #178 (re-run after commits 717f1865 and 6613d5ba)

I found no real bugs or regressions. This was a read-through of packages/astro/src/client.ts, client.test.ts and hydration.ts. I did not run the tests, typecheck or lint (pnpm isn't available in this runner).

Earlier findings

Both earlier reviews' notes are fixed by the current head:

  • Explicit undefined now overrides a kept key. pick() tests key in options, matching core's { ...kept, ...options }.
  • Remembered state moves only after a successful start, and a repeat registration (same client object) leaves it alone.

What the two new commits do, and what I checked

  • The relaunch waits for the launch in flight.
    • withHydrationWindow(..., afterPending = true) awaits inFlight before it reads base(). It swallows a rejection with .then(undefined, () => undefined), so a failed earlier launch doesn't block a relaunch. This mirrors core's relaunchWith, which awaits the pending launch.
    • inFlight = run is set synchronously, so a second relaunch queues behind the first. The caller still awaits run, so no rejection goes unhandled.
    • The two new tests cover both cases: a relaunch queued behind a pending registration, and a relaunch queued behind a failed one.
  • The listener is told the carrier and sink explicitly.
    • listenForAstroHydrationErrors merges { ...existing.options, ...options } (hydration.ts:75). An absent key would therefore bring back a carrier or sink from an earlier call.
    • openWindow now always passes onError and carrier, as explicit undefined when absent, so a relaunch that drops them really clears them. clientOf falls back with options.carrier ?? globalThis, and report skips an undefined onError, so the undefined values are safe.
    • A failed start still updates the listener's options but not remembered. Because every key is restated on the next call, the listener can't keep stale values from the failed attempt.
  • The target. launchDocument still follows launch's precedence: an explicit document, then a guarded window.document. When both are missing, target is omitted and the listener uses its default. The listener's listening map is keyed by target, so a missing target can't carry a stale target across.
  • Tests. Documents are distinguishable ({ id }), and toHaveBeenLastCalledWith treats an undefined property as absent. The "always states the carrier and sink" test therefore asserts with Object.hasOwn(...) and does check that the keys are present.

Observations, no action needed

  • A repeat registerClient with different onError or carrier still updates the listener's options, while core ignores it and remembered stays put. This matches the documented "latest options win" behaviour in hydration.ts:7-8 and was already the case before the PR.
  • The two limits noted in the new comment (a client launched directly through the umbrella isn't known to Astro, and a listener on an abandoned document stays attached) are accurate and reasonably accepted.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The change is local to @bugsee/astro's client and touches no core or browser code.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve and merge. I can't approve formally. CI is the gate for the lint, typecheck and coverage checks I couldn't run.
  3. Most important issues: None.
  4. Positives:
    • The raw-state-plus-resolve design keeps launch's document precedence in one place (launchDocument).
    • Serializing relaunches behind the in-flight launch mirrors core.
    • Restating every key to the listener closes the stale-merge gap.
    • The tests cover precedence, explicit undefined, failure, repeat registration and the pending-launch ordering.

Copy inherited document and window before relaunching.

relaunch() passes options to core's relaunchWith, which spreads own properties only. An inherited document or window therefore reaches the hydration target but not the launch, which keeps the previous document. Copy both keys as own properties before calling the umbrella relaunch.

Re the CodeRabbit follow-up (inherited document/window): valid, fixed in 0da3d48, but the other way round. Core's relaunch spreads OWN properties only, so the launch never sees an inherited document; copying them into the launch would change what it does. pick now uses Object.hasOwn, so the hydration target follows exactly what the launch gets. Test added (fails with key in).

Review of PR #178 (re-run after commit 0da3d487)

I found no real bugs or regressions. I read packages/astro/src/client.ts, its tests and core's relaunchWith (packages/core/src/relaunch.ts). I did not run the tests, typecheck or lint.

Earlier findings

The notes from the earlier reviews are fixed. These were explicit-undefined parity, remember-only-after-success, repeat registrations, waiting for the launch in flight, and restating the carrier and sink to the listener.

CodeRabbit's note about inherited document and window

The finding is already handled by the head commit 0da3d487. It is not an open issue.

  • The review was written against 6613d5ba, where pick() used key in options. That counted inherited properties, which core's { ...kept, ...options } spread (relaunch.ts:88) ignores.
  • 0da3d487 switches pick() to Object.hasOwn(options, key) (client.ts:59). The listener now sees exactly what core's launch sees, so the two cannot disagree.
  • The new test, "only OWN option properties count", passes Object.create({ document: inherited }) and expects the listener target to stay the kept own document.
  • CodeRabbit's suggested fix would copy the inherited keys onto the object passed to the umbrella relaunch. That would make the launch follow the inherited value, which is different from core's spread semantics. I'd keep the current approach, which makes the hydration listener match core.

Observations, no action needed

  • The Remembered type, lastClient and inFlight are module-level state. That is fine for a per-isolate singleton like this one. The comment at client.ts:51-52 states the accepted limits.
  • The comment block at client.ts:51-54 mixes two topics. The inFlight comment (line 53) sits under the "Known limits" lines. Moving line 53 up next to let inFlight would make it easier to read. This is cosmetic only.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The change is local to @bugsee/astro's client and does not touch core or browser code.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve and merge. I can't approve formally, and CI is the gate for lint, typecheck and coverage.
  3. Most important issues: None.
  4. Positives:
    • launchDocument keeps the launch's document precedence in one place.
    • The remembered state mirrors core's lastLaunch. It keeps the raw keys, moves only after a successful start, and ignores repeats.
    • Relaunches queue behind the launch in flight, as in core.
    • The tests use distinguishable documents and cover precedence, explicit undefined, failure, repeats and own-versus-inherited properties.

Stale comment

Reviewed at 6613d5b (four commits). The original #176 gap is closed: raw document/window are kept and the hydration target is resolved with launch's document over window.document precedence. The follow-up commits also match core lastLaunch on the success path (remember only after a new client, explicit undefined overwrites, relaunch waits for the in-flight start).

One real regression remains on the documented singleton-repeat path.

Findings

P2 — Repeat registerClient() blanks a live custom-carrier listener

Location: packages/astro/src/client.ts (openWindow 101–114, registerClient 129–133)

Problem: registerClient always starts from an empty base and openWindow always passes onError / carrier into listenForAstroHydrationErrors, including when they are undefined. That happens before client !== lastClient can treat the call as a no-op. listenForAstroHydrationErrors then does { ...existing.options, ...options } on the same EventTarget, so omitted keys become explicit undefined on the live listener.

Impact: After a documented repeat registerClient() ("returns the existing client"), hydration error reporting looks up the client on globalThis. If the live client sits on a custom carrier, events are queued then dropped, and later events with pending === 0 are dropped too — until a later relaunch() restates the remembered carrier. onError is cleared the same way.

Scenario:

  1. registerClient('tok', { carrier: C, onError }) — listener on globalThis.document with carrier: C.
  2. registerClient('tok') or registerClient('tok', { captureLogs: false }) — singleton ignore, same default target.
  3. Listen merge writes { carrier: undefined, onError: undefined }.
  4. An island dispatches astro:hydration-error. clientOf uses undefined ?? globalThis, finds no client, drops the error.

The default inject path (no custom carrier) still resolves globalThis and is fine. The repeat test uses a different window document, so it never hits this same-target merge.

Fix: If a client is already live on the launch carrier (getCarrierClient — @bugsee/core is already a dependency), open the hydration window from remembered rather than {} (or skip the listen/options replace). Do not use lastClient for that decision; it is not cleared on stop(). Add a test: live { carrier, onError } then a bare registerClient('tok') still listens/flushes with that carrier and sink.

Always-stating undefined is correct for relaunch({ carrier: undefined }). It is not correct for a fresh-base registerClient that is about to be ignored as a singleton.

Residual (not blocking)

  • lastClient does not see a client launched through the umbrella directly (already noted in the comment).
  • Abandoned-document listeners stay attached (also noted).
  • toHaveBeenCalledWith ignores undefined keys; only the Object.hasOwn test pins always-stated carrier/onError.

Did not run tests locally (node_modules was not present). CI lint/coverage was still pending at review time.

Overall

  1. Overall risk: Medium
  2. Merge recommendation: Request changes
  3. Must fix: Repeat registerClient() must not replace the live listener's carrier/onError with undefined when the launch is a singleton no-op
  4. Positives: The stated #176 P3 is actually fixed; tests now distinguish document identity; success-only remember, in-flight wait, and explicit-undefined spread are the right core mirrors

Stale comment

The #176 document-vs-window precedence fix is real, and the second/third commits correctly mirror core on success-only remember, key in options undefined, and waiting for an in-flight launch. One hole is left in the new remember-vs-repeat design.

Findings

P2 — Repeat registerClient rewrites the live hydration listener from an empty base

Location: packages/astro/src/client.ts:129-133 (empty base), 101-114 (always-stated carrier/onError, then lastClient only skips remembered)

Problem: registerClient always opens the hydration window as a fresh launch (base is {}) and always passes carrier/onError, including undefined. lastClient only prevents remembered from changing after start() returns the same object. The listener is already updated before that check. listenForAstroHydrationErrors merges with { ...existing, ...options } (packages/astro/src/hydration.ts:75), so undefined clears a kept carrier or sink. Core still ignores the repeat (launchCore returns alreadyLaunched and does not call setCarrierLastLaunch).

Impact: After a no-op second registerClient that omits carrier / onError, island hydration errors are looked up on globalThis (or reported with no sink) for the rest of the session, until a later successful relaunch() restores from remembered. The live client is unchanged.

Scenario:

  1. await registerClient('tok', { carrier: C, onError: sink }) — client and listener on C.
  2. await registerClient('tok') — integration injectScript cannot JSON-encode a carrier/sink, so a manual first call plus the injected second call (or View Transitions re-running the injected module) hits this. Core returns the same client.
  3. openWindow listens with { carrier: undefined, onError: undefined }. Merge clears C and sink. client !== lastClient is false, so remembered still has C.
  4. An astro:hydration-error on the page document: clientOf uses undefined ?? globalThis (hydration.ts:52). The client is on C. With pending === 0 after flush, the error is dropped, not queued.

The new repeat-registration test only asserts a later relaunch(); it does not assert listen of the second registerClient, and ./hydration is mocked so the merge is never exercised.

Fix: If a client is already live on remembered.carrier ?? globalThis, do not open a replacement window from {}. Skip listen/flush (errors report immediately; the client exists) or listen with remembered and ignore the new options — core discarded them. Keep the empty base only when getCarrierClient is empty (stopped / first launch). Add a test that uses the real listener (or asserts the second listen payload) for registerClient({ carrier, onError }) then registerClient().

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Medium — the #176 mismatch is fixed, but a no-op registerClient can now silently drop hydration errors for the session.
  2. Merge recommendation: Request changes.
  3. Most important issues: The repeat-registerClient listener rewrite (P2).
  4. Positives: Raw document/window plus launchDocument matches options.document ?? window.document. Success-only remembered matches setCarrierLastLaunch. inFlight wait matches relaunchWith. Explicit undefined via key in options is tested. Documents are distinguishable. The accepted-limits comment is honest.

Package tests were not run here (node_modules absent). Vitest 4.1.7 was checked separately: extra undefined keys compare equal to missing keys, so the { target: doc } assertions still pass.

…n listener alone

Core ignores a repeat launch and returns the live client, so there is nothing to listen for or remember; opening a window from nothing
overwrote the live listener's carrier and sink with undefined. Asks the carrier the launch would use (also covers a client launched outside
Astro).

Review of PR #178 (re-run after 0da3d487 and f0b6823c)

I read client.ts, the new tests, hydration.ts, and launchCore/buildLaunch in packages/browser/src/launch.ts. I did not run the tests, typecheck or lint. Nothing was modified.

Earlier findings

  • Cursor P2, repeat registerClient rewrites the live listener (both comments): fixed for the sequential case by f0b6823c.
    • registerClient now checks getCarrierClient(options.carrier ?? globalThis) first (client.ts:132). If a client is live, it returns launch(...) directly. It does not call listen, flush or touch remembered.
    • This uses the carrier slot rather than lastClient, which avoids the stop() staleness Cursor warned about.
    • The new tests pin it: listen/flush are not called, and a later relaunch() still restores { target, carrier, onError }. A second test asserts the carrier lookup is options.carrier, else globalThis.
  • CodeRabbit inherited document/window: already handled by 0da3d487 (Object.hasOwn), matching core's own-property spread. I agree with the maintainer's reasoning.
  • Earlier notes on explicit undefined, remember-on-success, in-flight wait and restating the carrier and sink are still fixed.

New finding

P3, a repeat registerClient while the first launch is still in flight still clobbers the listener

  • Location: packages/astro/src/client.ts:132-139, with the merge at hydration.ts:75
  • Problem: the new guard only sees a client that is already on the carrier. buildLaunch first awaits resolveBrowserDeviceId (launch.ts:745), and only then reads getCarrierClient. During that window the slot is empty, so a second registerClient skips the guard. It takes the withHydrationWindow(..., () => ({})) path and calls listen({ onError: undefined, carrier: undefined, ... }), and the listener merges those over the live options.
  • Scenario:
    1. registerClient('tok', { carrier: C, onError }) is called without awaiting.
    2. The injected registerClient('tok') runs before step 1 resolves.
    3. The listener now has carrier: undefined and no sink.
    4. Core resolves the second call to the same client (alreadyLaunched). lastClient stops remembered from changing, but the listener is already overwritten.
    5. Later astro:hydration-error events look up globalThis, miss the client on C, and are dropped once pending === 0.
  • Impact: the same silent loss of hydration errors as the P2, but it needs an overlapping call. That limits it to the first-load race, and a plain globalThis carrier is unaffected.
  • Note: the comment at client.ts:52-53 says lastClient "catches a repeat whose client has not reached the carrier yet". That is only true for remembered, not for the listener.
  • Fix: have registerClient wait for inFlight and then re-check the carrier guard. relaunch already does this through afterPending. Add a test where a second registration is issued while the first launch is pending and the listener's carrier and sink survive. If you accept the race, narrow the comment instead.

Observations, no action needed

  • If a client was launched through the umbrella directly, the new guard skips the listener entirely. The comment on inFlight and the removal of the old "known limit" line show this is a deliberate trade-off. Hydration errors from such a client are only reported if a listener already exists.
  • The two new tests mock @bugsee/core, so the real carrier is not exercised. That is fine for a unit test. The existing e2e coverage should be what CI relies on.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The change is local to @bugsee/astro's client and touches no core or browser code.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve and merge. The sequential repeat-registration P2 is resolved. The in-flight P3 is optional to fix. I can't approve formally, and CI covers the lint, typecheck and coverage gates I did not run.
  3. Most important issue: the P3 above (serialize registerClient behind inFlight, or fix the comment).
  4. Positives:
    • launchDocument keeps launch's document precedence in one place.
    • Remembered state mirrors core's lastLaunch.
    • Relaunches queue behind the launch in flight.
    • The guard uses the live carrier slot rather than lastClient.
    • The tests use distinguishable documents and cover precedence, explicit undefined, own versus inherited keys, failure, and repeat registration.

Re-review at 0da3d48. The inherited-keys commit is the right call: object spread copies own properties only, so Object.hasOwn makes the hydration target follow what relaunchWith actually passes to launch. Copying inherited document/window onto the launch (CodeRabbit's suggestion) would change launch, not match it. The new test fails under key in as claimed.

The P2 from the last pass is unchanged. registerClient still opens the window from {} and always states carrier/onError (including undefined) before lastClient can treat the call as a singleton no-op.

Findings

P2 — Repeat registerClient still blanks a live custom-carrier listener

Location: packages/astro/src/client.ts:129-133 (base: {}), 101-114 (always-stated keys, then lastClient)

Problem / impact / scenario / fix: Same as the previous review. 0da3d487 does not touch this path. After registerClient({ carrier: C, onError: sink }) then registerClient('tok'), core returns the live client on C, but the listener merge writes { carrier: undefined, onError: undefined } on the same default document. Later astro:hydration-error events look up globalThis and are dropped.

Residual (not blocking)

registerClient still passes the options object by reference into launch(), which does read inherited properties (options.document). pick now ignores them. Only relaunch is aligned. Exotic; the new test covers relaunch only.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Medium
  2. Merge recommendation: Request changes
  3. Must fix: Repeat registerClient() must not replace the live listener's carrier/onError with undefined when launch is a singleton no-op
  4. Positives: Object.hasOwn is the correct core-parity fix for inherited keys; #176 document-over-window remains fixed

Did not run package tests (node_modules absent).

Re-review at f0b6823. The repeat-registerClient P2 is fixed.

registerClient now returns launch() immediately when getCarrierClient(options.carrier ?? globalThis) is already set. That is the carrier core would use, so a same-carrier singleton ignore no longer opens a window from {} and no longer writes carrier: undefined / onError: undefined onto the live listener. The new test (same carrier, omitted document/sink) asserts listen/flush are not called and that a later relaunch() still restores the remembered document, carrier, and sink. Using options.carrier rather than remembered.carrier is correct: a second call with a different host is a new launch, not a no-op.

No remaining P0–P3.

Residual (not blocking): two registerClient calls that overlap before setCarrierClient still both open windows (lastClient only protects remembered). Inherited keys on registerClient still reach launch by property access while pick uses Object.hasOwn (relaunch is aligned).

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve
  3. Most important issues: None
  4. Positives: Live-client skip matches core’s per-carrier singleton; #176 document-over-window, success-only remember, Object.hasOwn, and in-flight relaunch wait all still hold

Did not run package tests (node_modules absent).

Re-review at f0b6823 (six commits). The #176 document-vs-window mismatch is still correctly fixed on the successful registerClient path: raw keys, launchDocument matching options.document ?? window.document, Object.hasOwn, success-only remembered, and relaunch waiting on inFlight.

f0b6823c stops a same-carrier, already-live registerClient from opening an empty-base window. That sequential case is fixed. The skip is still the wrong shape for a repeat, and the in-flight window the hydration queue exists to cover is still unprotected.

Findings

P2 — Live-client skip is too aggressive after settle, too late during launch, and keyed only on this call's host

Location: packages/astro/src/client.ts 126–139 (skip), 93–119 (openWindow always-states then listens before lastClient)

Problem: A live client is treated as "nothing to listen for." That is true of core's launch singleton, not of the Astro hydration listener. The skip also does not run until getCarrierClient is set, which is at the end of buildLaunch — after await resolveBrowserDeviceId (packages/browser/src/launch.ts:750-755, 1705). lastClient only skips the remembered assignment; it does not skip listenForAstroHydrationErrors. registerClient still uses base: {} and does not wait on inFlight / getCarrierPendingLaunch.

Impact:

  1. After the integration inject has launched, a later registerClient({ onError }) is ignored. clientInitScript JSON-stringifies options (integration.ts:32), so functions and host objects never ride the injected call. On main, a second registerClient merged defined keys onto the listener. This skip is the only remaining way to attach onError/carrier when using bugsee(), and it now no-ops.
  2. A client launched via launch() (not registerClient) then hit by the inject never gets a hydration listener. Island astro:hydration-error events are dropped for the session.
  3. Two registerClient calls overlapping the device-id window still listen from {} with always-stated carrier/onError undefined, wiping a live custom carrier/sink. The new test passes { carrier } on the second call and waits until the first has settled, so it misses both (1) and (3).

Scenario (inject + sink, the realistic non-JSON path):

  1. Inject: registerClient("tok", {}) — fire-and-forget, launch in flight.
  2. Island: registerClient('tok', { onError }).
    • If launch already settled: skip, onError never reaches the listener.
    • If launch is still in IndexedDB device-id: empty-base listen applies onError (and carrier: undefined), remembered stays the inject's {}, a later relaunch() restates onError: undefined and clears it.
  3. Same pattern with a manual { carrier: C, onError } followed by the inject's bare registerClient("tok", {}): skip looks at globalThis, not C, so it does not skip and the default-document merge still clears C.

Fix:

  • Wait for inFlight (or getCarrierPendingLaunch on this host) before deciding.
  • If a client is live: still attach the listener once if missing (use carrier lastLaunch / remembered for target/carrier/onError). Do not open a flush window from {}.
  • Always-state undefined only on relaunch. A no-op registerClient should pass pick(options) without forcing omitted keys to undefined, matching main's defined-key merge so an explicit later onError can attach without wiping carrier.
  • Tests: inject-shaped registerClient('tok') after { onError } (same default host); { carrier, onError } then bare registerClient('tok'); overlapping calls before getCarrierClient is set; launch() then registerClient() actually listens.

Residual (not blocking)

  • Abandoned-document listeners stay attached (already noted).
  • Skip does not seed remembered from lastLaunch, so launch({ document: D }) → skipped registerClient() → relaunch({ window: W }) is the original #176 mismatch again. Same root as the skip.

Did not run package tests (node_modules is not present in this environment).

Overall

  1. Overall risk: Medium
  2. Merge recommendation: Request changes
  3. Must fix: Repeats must not skip hydration setup, and must not empty-base-listen during the pending-launch window
  4. Positives: #176 precedence is right when registerClient actually records remembered; Object.hasOwn matches core's spread; success-only remember and relaunch-vs-inFlight match relaunchWith

…peat attaches only its defined options

All launches wait for the one in flight (the carrier is set only at its end). A registration while a client is live is a repeat: it listens
with the remembered options plus only the options it defined (core discarded the rest) and remembers nothing. Fresh launches and relaunches
still state carrier/onError explicitly. Replaces the lastClient heuristic.

Review of PR #178 (re-run after f8f1a89d)

I found no new bugs or regressions. This was a read-through of packages/astro/src/client.ts, client.test.ts and hydration.ts. I did not run the tests, typecheck or lint, so CI is the gate for those.

Earlier findings: fixed by the latest commits

  • Cursor's P2 (repeat registerClient blanks a live carrier or sink) is closed.
    • registerClient no longer returns early when a client is live. It waits for inFlight (client.ts:91) and then asks plan() (client.ts:141-144).
    • Because the plan is read after the wait, a registration that overlaps a launch sees the carrier already set. This covers the device-id window I flagged last round (P3), because the carrier is only set at the end of a launch.
    • A repeat builds on remembered and passes only its defined onError/carrier to the listener (client.ts:108-113). The listener's { ...existing.options, ...options } merge (hydration.ts:75) therefore cannot clear them.
    • A repeat records nothing (client.ts:121). Core discards the call, so a later relaunch() is back on the original launch's options.
    • This also restores what Cursor's second point wanted: a late registerClient({ onError }) attaches the sink instead of being skipped.
  • The in-flight P3 I raised last round is fixed. The overlap test (client.test.ts:265-282) checks that the second call does not start until the first settles and that { carrier, onError } survives.
  • The feat(core): frame.origin = 'call' marker (async origin capture, step 1) #176 document-over-window precedence, Object.hasOwn, remember-only-on-success and explicit-undefined parity all still hold.

Observations, no action needed

  • A repeat that passes its own document or window re-targets the listener.
    • pick(options, true) still takes defined document/window (client.ts:56-68). registerClient('tok', { document: E }) while a client is live on D would attach a listener on E, although core ignores the call.
    • The injected call cannot do this, because clientInitScript JSON-encodes its options. Only a manual call with a different document can, and the listener only reports to the live client. I'd leave it, but the repeat test only pins document: undefined, so the behaviour is untested either way.
  • Registrations are now serialised module-wide. A registration for carrier C2 waits for one still launching on C1. The added latency is limited to the device-id read, so it is negligible.
  • The "known limit" comment is detached from its code. It sits at client.ts:54, after the inFlight declaration and followed by a blank line. Moving it above remembered would read better. This is cosmetic.
  • A client launched directly through the umbrella is unknown to Astro. remembered starts as {}, so a relaunch() after a skipped repeat falls back to the listener's default target even if core kept a document. This was already the case before the PR.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The change is local to @bugsee/astro's client and touches no core or browser code.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve and merge. I can't approve formally. CI covers the lint, typecheck and coverage gates I did not run.
  3. Most important issues: None.
  4. Positives:
    • launchDocument keeps launch's document precedence in one place.
    • The Plan split (fresh, relaunch, repeat) mirrors core's semantics clearly.
    • Serialising behind inFlight removes the race class the reviews kept finding.
    • The tests use distinguishable documents and cover the repeat, overlap, failure and own-versus-inherited cases.

Re-review at f8f1a89. The skip-when-live shape is gone, and the prior P2s are addressed.

Every registerClient / relaunch now waits on inFlight before reading the carrier, so overlap is decided after setCarrierClient. A live same-host call is a repeat: it still listens, from remembered plus only defined keys (pick(..., definedOnly)), and does not write remembered. Always-stating undefined is limited to fresh launches and relaunches. That matches core (repeat launch is ignored; undefined on relaunch is a real spread) and restores the inject-then-registerClient({ onError }) path without wiping carrier.

The new tests cover late sink-only, no-options repeat, and overlapping calls. Cross-carrier registerClient('tok') while a client lives on C is correctly left as a fresh launch on globalThis.

No remaining P0–P3.

Residual (not blocking): abandoned-document listeners; inherited keys on registerClient still reach launch by property access while pick uses Object.hasOwn.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve
  3. Most important issues: None
  4. Positives: Repeat vs relaunch vs fresh is now three distinct plans; serialization matches relaunchWith; #176 document-over-window still holds on the success path

Did not run package tests (node_modules absent). CI was green on f0b6823c; this SHA had not finished checks at review time.

Re-review at f8f1a89. The #176 document-vs-window mismatch is still correctly fixed, and the previous P2 on repeat registerClient is actually closed this time — not just skipped.

I read packages/astro/src/client.ts / client.test.ts against hydration.ts (the { ...existing.options, ...options } merge), packages/browser/src/launch.ts (options.document ?? window.document, setCarrierClient at the end of buildLaunch, alreadyLaunched after resolveBrowserDeviceId), and core relaunchWith / setCarrierLastLaunch / RELAUNCH_KEPT_OPTIONS. I did not run package tests (node_modules is not present). CI lint/coverage was still pending at review time.

Previous P2 — addressed by f8f1a89

The live-client skip in f0b6823 was the wrong shape. The new path is:

  1. Serialize first. Every registerClient / relaunch waits on inFlight before plan(), so “is a client live?” is answered after setCarrierClient (end of buildLaunch). Overlapping registerClient({ carrier, onError }) then registerClient({ carrier }) no longer both open empty-base windows.
  2. A live client is a repeat, not a no-op. getCarrierClient(options.carrier ?? globalThis) still keys on the host this launch would use (correct: a different carrier is a new singleton slot). If live: base: remembered, pick(..., definedOnly), do not remember the call. A later registerClient({ onError }) — the realistic inject follow-up, since clientInitScript JSON-drops functions — attaches the sink without writing carrier: undefined.
  3. Always-state undefined only for fresh launches and relaunches. That is the right mirror of core's { ...kept, ...options } for relaunch({ carrier: undefined }), and it is no longer applied to a singleton-ignored registerClient.

The new tests pin (1) and (2): late sink-only repeat, no-options repeat (keys, not just toHaveBeenLastCalledWith), and overlapping calls that wait. Cross-carrier registerClient('tok') while a client lives on C is a fresh launch on globalThis; that is core's per-slot singleton, not a remaining wipe of a repeat.

What I re-checked on the original fix

  • launchDocument matches packages/browser/src/launch.ts:966-979 (document over guarded window.document). Raw keys in remembered plus per-key Object.hasOwn match core's own-property spread; an inherited document is ignored, as relaunchWith ignores it.
  • remembered moves only after a non-repeat start() resolves, matching setCarrierLastLaunch only when internals exist.
  • relaunch still builds on remembered (including explicit undefined) and waits for the in-flight start, matching relaunchWith's pending-launch wait.
  • A failed start does not replace remembered. The listener is still updated for that attempt (same as main, where lastHydration moved before start()); the next successful relaunch() restates from remembered.

No remaining P0–P3 with a credible Astro-path failure.

Residual, not blocking: remembered is Astro's copy of last-launch, not getCarrier().lastLaunch. A client first launched through the umbrella (not registerClient) then relaunch({ window }) from this module can still disagree on document — mixing entries, not the integration inject path.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve
  3. Most important issues: None
  4. Positives: Repeat vs relaunch is now two different listen shapes instead of a skip; in-flight wait matches relaunchWith; launchDocument keeps precedence in one place; tests distinguish document identity and cover the inject-shaped late onError call
