fix(astro): follow core's recorded launch options; stop listening on a document the page left - #179
Follow-up to #178 (merged). Two of the three limits it left:
State from core, not a copy. Astro kept its own remembered copy of the last launch, so a client launched through the umbrella directly could disagree with relaunch({ window }) on the document. A relaunch (and a repeat registration) now builds on core's lastLaunch for the host relaunchWith would pick (options.carrier ?? lastHost ?? globalThis).
Stale listeners. When a successful launch moves to another document, the old document's listener is removed (stopListeningForAstroHydrationErrors).
Tests were rebuilt around a faithful fake of core's carrier (records kept options on success only, returns the live client for a repeat, relaunch merges {...lastLaunch.options, ...options}), so they exercise behaviour rather than mirror the implementation. Eight mutants caught; 105 package tests, 100% coverage.
Not changed: a bare registration on the global carrier while another client lives on a custom carrier (two clients, one document; no defined product behaviour).
…a document the page left
The hydration state is no longer a second copy of last-launch: a relaunch, and a repeat registration, build on core's lastLaunch for the host
relaunchWith would pick, so a client launched through the umbrella directly is followed too. When a launch moves to another document the old
document's listener is removed. Tests run against a faithful fake of core's carrier.

Review of #179 (Astro follows core's recorded launch options; stops listening on a document the page left)
I read the diff and the code around it (packages/astro/src/client.ts, hydration.ts, core's relaunch.ts and carrier.ts, and the launchCore and relaunch entry points). I did not run the tests or tooling. I posted two inline comments.

activeTarget is a single global slot, but core's state is per carrier host. Launching a second carrier with its own document removes the listener of a document a live client on the first carrier still uses. Hydration errors on that document are silently dropped. Before this PR both documents were listened on.
P3
client.ts:131
Only launches with an explicit or window-derived document are tracked. Moving from the default globalThis.document to an explicit document leaves the default listener behind, and moving from an explicit document to the default leaves the explicit one behind. client.test.ts:355 locks in the second case.
Suggested fix for both: key the tracked document by carrier host and track the resolved target (target ?? globalThis.document). Add tests for two carriers with two documents (no stop) and for default-to-explicit moves.
Summary
Overall risk: Low to Medium. The change is confined to Astro's hydration listener bookkeeping. The worst outcome is lost hydration-error reports in multi-carrier setups.
Merge recommendation: Fine to merge after the P2 is fixed. The P3 can follow.
Most important fix: scope activeTarget per carrier host.
Earlier findings: none, this is the first review.
Positives
Reading the state from core's lastLaunch removes the duplicated remembered copy, and the host resolution matches relaunchWith (options.carrier ?? lastHost ?? globalThis).
The tests now use a fake of core's carrier, so they check behaviour rather than mirroring the implementation.
stopListeningForAstroHydrationErrors is safe on an unknown target.

Bug Fixes
Relaunches now retain the successful options for the selected host and use the appropriate host when choosing launch settings.
Moving a launch to a different document now stops hydration-error listening on the previous document, preventing stale listeners.
Hydration-error reporting can resume on a target after its listener state is cleared.
Repeat registrations and relaunches now read recorded launch options from the selected core carrier. After a successful launch moves to a different document, the client stops listening on the previous document. A new hydration API removes a target’s listener and associated state.

Explanation
The title names the main change: Astro now follows core's recorded launch options, and it stops hydration-error listeners on a document that a successful launch leaves. Both parts match the raw summary, which covers the lastLaunch reads in client.ts and the new stopListeningForAstroHydrationErrors function in hydration.ts. The title is somewhat long at 93 characters, but it stays specific.

Severity: P2 Medium
Problem:activeTarget is one module-level slot, but core's state is per carrier host. A fresh launch on carrier B removes the listener of a document that carrier A's live client still depends on.
Scenario:
awaitregisterClient('tok',{carrier: A,document: docA});// activeTarget = docAawaitregisterClient('tok',{carrier: B,document: docB});// client on B is undefined → fresh, repeat=false// → activeTarget (docA) !== docB → stopListeningForAstroHydrationErrors(docA)
Client A is still live, but astro:hydration-error events on docA are no longer listened to and are silently lost. Before this PR both documents were listened on. registerClient already looks up options.carrier ?? globalThis per call and client.test.ts exercises custom carriers, so multi-carrier use (an iframe or micro-frontend with its own carrier) is a supported shape. This is different from the "bare registration on the global carrier while another client lives on a custom carrier" case the PR description sets aside.
Fix: Track the listened document per host, for example WeakMap<object, EventTarget> keyed by the host recordedBy resolves (options.carrier ?? globalThis for register, options?.carrier ?? getCarrier().lastHost ?? globalThis for relaunch). Compare and stop only within the same host. Add a test with two carriers and two documents asserting that stop is not called.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Confirmed and fixed in 5c56464. The listened document is now tracked per carrier host (Map<host, document>), and release() stops a document only when no host is on it, so a launch on carrier B can no longer remove carrier A's listener, and two carriers sharing one document keep it until the last has left. Tests: two carriers/two documents, two carriers/one shared document (stops only when the last leaves), and a failed launch on one carrier not releasing a document another still uses.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Severity: P3 Low
Problem:target !== undefined means only launches with an explicit or window-derived document are tracked. A launch that falls back to the listener's default (globalThis.document) never sets activeTarget, and never counts as a move away from one.
Scenario:
registerClient('tok') with no document. The listener attaches to globalThis.document, and activeTarget stays undefined.
relaunch({ document: other }). The activeTarget !== undefined guard is false, so nothing is stopped. The default document keeps a live listener with stale options.
The reverse also leaks. After registerClient('tok', { document: A }), relaunch({ document: undefined }) listens on the default document, but A is never stopped. client.test.ts:355 ("a launch with no document at all leaves the old listener alone") locks in this second half.
Fix: Track the resolved target, target ?? globalThis.document. You could also have listenForAstroHydrationErrors return, or expose, the target it actually attached to. Then compare that against the previous one.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Confirmed and fixed in 5c56464, both halves: the tracked document is the one the listener really attaches to (target ?? globalThis.document), so default→explicit and explicit→default both stop the old one. The test that asserted the leak was rewritten. Also closed in the same commit: a failed launch now releases the listener it had opened, a repeat no longer attaches on a document core ignored, and a relaunch waits for core's own pending launch before reading its record.

Review findings on the first cut: one module-level slot let a launch on one carrier remove the listener another carrier's client depends on; the
default page document was never tracked; a failed launch leaked the listener it had opened; a repeat attached a listener on a document core
had ignored; and a relaunch read core's record before core's own pending launch had finished. Documents are released only when no host is on
them.

Re-review of #179 after 5c564646 (per-host listener tracking)
I read the new commit and the code around it (client.ts, hydration.ts, and the new tests in client.test.ts). I did not run the tests or tooling. I posted one new inline comment.
Earlier findings: both look fixed
P2, single global activeTarget:activeTargets is now a Map keyed by carrier host, and release() skips a document another host still uses. The tests "two carriers on two documents", "two carriers sharing one document" and "a failed launch on a carrier does not release a document another carrier still uses" cover it.
P3, default document not tracked:tracked = target ?? globalThis.document now matches what hydration.ts listens on (targetOf). The "default then explicit" and "explicit then default" tests cover both directions.

client.ts:153
A repeat registration attaches a listener but is never recorded in activeTargets (!repeat guard). If the client was launched through the umbrella directly, the listener opened by registerClient (repeat) on the recorded document is never released by a later relaunch({ document: other }).
Suggested fix: record tracked for a repeat only when the host has no entry yet, and never move or release on a repeat. Add a test for that sequence.
Checked and found fine
activeTargets.set runs before release(left), so release does not see the document it is leaving.
A failed start releases only a document no host tracks. A failed relaunch onto the host's own document is a no-op.
flushQueuedAstroHydrationErrors returns early when the state was already removed, so the failure path is safe.
A repeat that states onError: undefined keeps the recorded sink.
Summary
Overall risk: Low. The change is confined to Astro's hydration-listener bookkeeping. The remaining gap is a leaked listener with stale options in one mixed umbrella/Astro sequence.
Merge recommendation: Fine to merge. The P3 can follow.
Most important issue: track the listener a repeat registration opens (the P3 above).
Positives
Core's lastLaunch is now the single source of truth, and the host resolution mirrors relaunchWith.
Per-host tracking comes with shared-document handling.
The tests exercise behaviour through a fake of core's carrier, including the failure and multi-carrier paths.

Severity: P3 Low
Problem: A repeat registration attaches a listener (listenForAstroHydrationErrors(hydration) runs for repeats too, on the document recorded by core), but !repeat here means it is never put in activeTargets. If Astro never made a non-repeat launch on that host, nothing remembers the listener and nothing can release it.
Scenario:
The client is launched through the umbrella directly with document: docA. Astro has not tracked it.
registerClient('tok') is a repeat. recordedBy(host) gives docA, so the listener attaches to docA. activeTargets stays empty.
relaunch({ document: docB }) succeeds. left is undefined, so docA is never stopped. It keeps a live listener with stale options.
This is the "client launched through the umbrella directly" case the PR sets out to fix, but only for the document choice, not for the listener's lifetime.
Fix: For a repeat, record tracked when activeTargets has no entry for host yet. Never move or release on a repeat. Add a test: umbrella launch on docA (set in the fake carrier), registerClient, then relaunch({ document: docB }), and assert stop(docA).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Confirmed and fixed in 7b86dd5. A repeat now records the document it attached to when the host has no entry yet (never overwriting or releasing an existing one), so a later relaunch to another document stops it. Tests: umbrella launch on docA, registerClient (repeat), relaunch to docB asserts stop(docA); and a repeat never moves what is already tracked. Both mutants caught.
Re-review of #179 after 7b86dd50 (repeat registration records its listener)

The repeat-recording guard is !activeTargets.has(host). If the host already has an entry and core's recorded document differs (the app called the umbrella's relaunch({ document }) directly in between), the repeat attaches to the recorded document but never tracks it. A later Astro relaunch releases only the old entry, so that listener stays live with stale options.
This is the same "client touched through the umbrella directly" case the PR targets, now for a second mixed sequence. It only leaks a listener and does not drop reports, so it can follow.
Checked and found fine
withHydrationWindow serializes calls through inFlight and waits for core's pending launch before plan(host) reads lastLaunch, so repeat is decided from settled state.
activeTargets.set runs before release(left), and a failed launch releases only a document no host tracks.
stopListeningForAstroHydrationErrors does not touch queued state for other targets. It is a no-op for an unknown target.
A repeat drops document/window and a stated undefined, matching what core discards.
Summary
Overall risk: Low. The change is confined to Astro's hydration-listener bookkeeping, and the worst remaining outcome is one stale listener in a mixed umbrella/Astro sequence.
Merge recommendation: Fine to merge. The P3 can follow.
Most important issue: reconcile a repeat's attached document with the host's tracked entry (client.ts:153).
Positives:
Core's lastLaunch is the single source of truth, and host resolution mirrors relaunchWith.
Per-host tracking handles carriers that share a document.
The tests drive behaviour through a faithful fake of core's carrier, including failure and multi-carrier paths.
· branch fix/astro-hydration-state-from-core
A repeat's document comes from core's record, so it is tracked like a launch's and releases the one Astro knew when the client was moved
behind its back. Drops two conditions release() already makes redundant.

Severity: P3 Low
Problem:!activeTargets.has(host) makes a repeat skip recording whenever the host already has an entry, but the repeat still attaches a listener (listenForAstroHydrationErrors(hydration)) on the document core recorded. If that recorded document differs from the tracked one, the new listener is never tracked and never released.
The app calls the umbrella's relaunch({ document: docB }) directly (the case this PR sets out to keep consistent). Core's lastLaunch now says docB; Astro's map still says docA.
registerClient('tok') is a repeat. recordedBy(host) gives docB, so the listener attaches to docB, but the map is left at docA.
A later Astro relaunch({ document: docC }) releases only docA. docB keeps a live listener with stale options.
Fix: For a repeat, compare tracked with the host's entry. If they differ, the page already moved without Astro, so release the old entry and record tracked. Or reconcile the entry with core's recorded document at the start of every call. Add a test for this sequence.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Already handled by e099938, which removed the !activeTargets.has(host) guard this describes (it was unobservable): on any success, launch or repeat, the host's entry is set to the document the listener is on and a different previous one is released, so docA is released when a repeat finds the client recorded on docB. The test a repeat after the umbrella moved the client to another document releases the one Astro knew is this exact sequence (first doc, recorded record moved, registerClient, assert stop(first)).
Re-review of #179 after e0999382 (one tracking path for launches and repeats)
I read the new commit and the code around it: client.ts, hydration.ts, core's relaunch.ts and carrier.ts, and the umbrella relaunch. I did not run the tests or tooling, because pnpm isn't available in this runner. This review rests on reading the code only.
New findings: none.
Earlier findings
The P2 (single global activeTarget), the first P3 (default document not tracked) and the second P3 (a repeat's listener never recorded) were all reported before. They look fixed by 5c564646, 7b86dd50 and this commit.
e0999382 merges the repeat and launch bookkeeping into one if (tracked !== undefined) block. For a repeat, tracked comes from core's recorded document, so a client the umbrella moved directly is picked up. For a launch it is the document just started on.
Checked and found fine
Host resolution.options?.carrier ?? getCarrier().lastHost ?? globalThis matches relaunchWith. The umbrella passes options?.carrier as carrierHost (bugsee/src/launch.ts:67), so Astro and core resolve the same host.
Pending launch. Astro waits for core's pending launch on that host, as relaunchWith does (relaunch.ts:71-75). Astro then reads lastLaunch after the wait, as core does.
Ordering in release.activeTargets.set(host, tracked) runs before release(left). When left === tracked, release finds the host still on that document and does nothing.
Failed launch.release(tracked) skips a document any host still tracks. stopListeningForAstroHydrationErrors also drops that document's queue. flushQueuedAstroHydrationErrors in the finally is safe afterwards because the state is already gone.
Repeat. A repeat never reaches the catch release (!repeat guard). Core also returns the live client for a repeat, so it can't take the failure path.
Pending windows. Registrations are serialised through inFlight, so left has no open window and dropping its state loses no queued errors.
Option precedence. A repeat takes only defined onError and carrier. A launch states both, so the listener doesn't resurrect a sink from an earlier launch.
Not reported as findings (design limits, already acknowledged in the PR description)
Two carriers sharing one document share one listener state, and the latest options win. This is the "no defined product behaviour" case.
activeTargets holds strong references to hosts and documents until they are released. The old remembered slot did the same, and hydration.ts's listening is a WeakMap, so a long-lived page that creates and discards many iframe carriers could accumulate entries. I did not build a concrete failure from it.
Summary
Overall risk: Low. The change is confined to Astro's hydration-listener bookkeeping, and the remaining gaps are documented limits.
Merge recommendation: Fine to merge.
Most important issues to fix: none outstanding. Before merging, run the package tests and the 100% line / ≥90% branch coverage gate in CI (pnpm --filter @bugsee/astro exec vitest run, pnpm test:coverage). I couldn't run either here.
Positives
Core's lastLaunch is now the single source of truth. The host selection mirrors relaunchWith exactly, including the wait for core's pending launch.
Tracking is per host and shared-document aware, and failure paths release only what the launch opened.
The tests use a faithful fake of core's carrier, so they check behaviour rather than mirror the implementation.

Stale comment
Follow-up to #178. The first half — drop the Astro-side remembered copy and read core's lastLaunch / lastHost — matches setCarrierLastLaunch and relaunchWith. Relaunch host selection, raw document/window plus launchDocument precedence, defined-keys-only repeats, and success-only recording all line up with core.
The second half (stop the listener of a document the page left) does not. listen still runs before start, activeTarget is only recorded when launchDocument returns a defined value, and it is a single module slot. That leaves three concrete holes in the new stop path, including the default Astro launch (no document option) that this package actually injects.
Findings
1. P2 Medium — default / omitted document is invisible to stop logic
Location:packages/astro/src/client.ts:131-135 Problem:activeTarget is updated only when target !== undefined. launchDocument returns undefined whenever the launch did not pass document or window.document, and listenForAstroHydrationErrors then attaches to globalThis.document. That attachment is never recorded, so it can never be stopped. Impact: The stale-listener fix does not apply to the path the Astro integration actually uses (registerClient(token) with no document). A later successful launch on an explicit document leaves the page-document listener in place; a later default launch leaves an earlier explicit-document listener in place. Hydration errors from the document the session is no longer bound to keep being reported. Scenario: Integration injects registerClient('tok') (default page document). App later relaunch({ document: iframe.contentDocument }) (or { window: iframe.contentWindow }). activeTarget is still undefined, so stop is skipped. Both documents now have listeners, and iframe/page hydration errors both land on the one client. The inverse is locked in by a launch with no document at all leaves the old listener alone. Fix: Resolve the EventTarget the listener will actually use (target ?? globalThis.document) up front, pass that as hydration.target, and use it for activeTarget / stop. Invert the “no document → do not stop” test: a fresh launch that lands on a different resolved target must remove the old one.
2. P2 Medium — failed document-move never rolls back the speculative listen
Location:packages/astro/src/client.ts:128-139 Problem:listenForAstroHydrationErrors runs before start(). On success, a different document stops the old target. On failure, nothing stops the new target. flush in finally only closes that target's launch window (pending = 0); the addEventListener stays. The new test (a failed move leaves the old listener alone) checks only that stop is not called, and client.test.ts mocks listen/stop, so this never hits the real WeakMap. Impact: After a failed relaunch({ document: other }), other keeps a live listener. relaunchWith has already stopped the old client. A later successful relaunch() restores the original document from lastLaunch, but the leaked listener on other still reports astro:hydration-error into that recovered session. Scenario:registerClient({ document: pageDoc }) succeeds. relaunch({ document: iframeDoc }) fails (device-id / launch error). relaunch() recovers on pageDoc. The iframe is still in the DOM and fires hydration errors; they are attributed to the page session. Fix: On a non-repeat failure, if target is defined and is not activeTarget, call stopListeningForAstroHydrationErrors(target) (after flush, or instead of relying on the later finally flush). Cover it with an unmocked hydration test, not the listen/stop mocks.
3. P2 Medium — one activeTarget can disable another live client's listener
Location:packages/astro/src/client.ts:56 and :131-135 Problem:activeTarget is process-wide. A successful non-repeat launch on document B stops whatever document A last recorded, even when A still has a live client on another carrier. The PR explicitly leaves two-clients-one-document undefined; two-clients-two-documents is different: #178 leaked both listeners, this change silently drops the first. Impact: A still-running client stops receiving island hydration errors. No warning. Scenario:registerClient('tok', { document: iframeDoc, carrier: iframeCarrier }), then registerClient('tok', { document: pageDoc }) (or another carrier). Second launch succeeds, stop(iframeDoc) runs, iframe client is still launched. Fix: Key the last listened target per carrier (the host registerClient / relaunch already selected), and only stop that host's previous document.
Overall risk: Medium
Merge recommendation
Request changes. The core-state follow is the right design and looks correct; the new stop path should not land until (1) and (2) are fixed. (3) can ship as a follow-up if two-carrier Astro is still considered undefined, but it is a regression in the code this PR adds.
Most important issues to fix
Record and stop the resolved listen target, including globalThis.document.
Roll back the speculative listen on a failed document move.
Positive observations
Reading getCarrier(host).lastLaunch?.options instead of a parallel remembered copy is the right seam; an umbrella launch then Astro relaunch() can no longer disagree on document.

Follow-up Comments
Remove the listener that a failed move leaves on its target document.
131-135: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value
Remove the listener that a failed move leaves on its target document.
When a relaunch to a new document fails, openWindow keeps the listener it added on that document. The finally block only flushes the queue. A later successful move to a third document does not remove it, because activeTarget records only successful targets. If the failed document later dispatches astro:hydration-error and no custom carrier is set, its errors are reported to the current client.

The disposer returned by listenForAstroHydrationErrors removes state.listener, then calls listening.delete(target) without checking the current entry. If a target is stopped, registered again, and the old disposer is then called, the new entry is deleted while its listener stays attached. A later stopListeningForAstroHydrationErrors(target) then does nothing. Add a test that calls a stale disposer after re-registering.

Astro's repeat registration can target a different document than the WebView client.
Astro's repeat registration can target a different document than the WebView client.
The WebView launch sets the carrier client without recording its launch options in core. Astro reads that record for repeat registrations. When the WebView uses an explicit document or window, Astro's repeat registration can attach its hydration listener to the default document instead.
This gap is in the WebView package and predates this PR.
Recording the WebView options in core would also make core's relaunchWith carry them into later relaunches. That change affects more than Astro and needs its own review first.

Update the WebView launch path so Astro repeat registrations retain and use the
explicitly supplied document or window instead of falling back to the default
document. Keep this correction in the WebView package; do not change core
lastLaunch.options or relaunchWith behavior.
Assert the stopped document by identity in the move test.
Assert the stopped document by identity in the move test.
doc() returns a new { id } object on each call. toHaveBeenLastCalledWith(doc('first')) compares structure, so a copy with the same id also passes. The real stopListeningForAstroHydrationErrors removes the listener from the stored document, and removal requires the original object. A regression that passes a copy would leave the listener attached, and this test would not detect it. Keep a reference to the registered document and assert identity with toBe.

In the move test, retain the document object passed to registerClient and assert
that stop received that exact object by identity using toBe, rather than
comparing it with a newly created doc('first') object. Keep the existing
call-count and relaunch assertions unchanged.
The unit tests mock listen/stop, so they cannot see which documents still have a listener. These run the real hydration module on real
EventTargets with the real core carrier (umbrella launch/relaunch stubbed): a failed move releases its destination, the default page document
is released, two carriers do not silence each other, and a repeat on an umbrella-launched client is tracked.

Re-review of #179 after 8416f1b9 (hydration listeners tested against the real registry and carrier)
I read the new commit and the code around it: client.ts, hydration.ts, client.test.ts, client.integration.test.ts, and core's carrier.ts and relaunch.ts. I did not run the tests or tooling, so this rests on reading the code only.
New findings: none. I posted no inline comments.
Earlier findings (all fixed or dismissed)
Single global activeTarget (P2): fixed in 5c564646. State is now per carrier host.
Default document not tracked (P3): fixed in 5c564646. The tracked document is target ?? globalThis.document.
Listener from a repeat registration not tracked (P3): fixed in 7b86dd50 and e0999382.
Repeat attaches to a document that differs from the host's tracked one (P3): fixed in e0999382. A successful repeat now releases the previous document.
Cursor's failed-move listener (P2): fixed. The catch releases a document no host tracks, and the unit and integration tests cover it.
Checked in this commit
The test fake matches core.
RELAUNCH_KEPT_OPTIONS (core/src/carrier.ts:245-305) includes document, window, onError and carrier, which is the fake's KEPT list.
setCarrierLastLaunch drops undefined values and records lastHost on the default slot.
relaunchWith merges {...last.options, ...options} on options.carrier ?? lastHost ?? globalThis, after waiting for the pending launch (relaunch.ts:70-88).
The integration test uses the real core carrier. It stubs only the umbrella's launch/relaunch and calls the real setCarrierClient and setCarrierLastLaunch. It asserts where an error is reported, not whether stop was called. That covers the failed move, default-to-explicit, two carriers on two documents, and a repeat on a client launched through the umbrella.
The stopListeningForAstroHydrationErrors addition is safe. It is a no-op on an unknown target, and flushQueuedAstroHydrationErrors returns early once the state is gone, so the failure path's finally flush is fine.
Open bot comments I'm not raising as findings
CodeRabbit: the stale disposer deletes a re-registered entry (hydration.ts:111-114). This can't happen in this PR. client.ts discards the disposer listenForAstroHydrationErrors returns, and hydration.ts is not exported from the package index. Guarding with listening.get(target) === state would still be cheap hardening, but it isn't needed for merge.
CodeRabbit: assert the stopped document by identity. The test comparison (toHaveBeenLastCalledWith(doc('first'))) is structural. Only a release that passes a copy would be missed, and release receives the stored reference. The integration test already shows the real listener is removed. This is optional.
CodeRabbit: the WebView launch doesn't record lastLaunch. It predates this PR and sits outside the Astro package.
Cursor's three findings: all fixed in earlier commits, as above.
The shared-document case (two carriers sharing one document, where the latest options win) is the case the PR description sets aside.
Summary
Overall risk: Low. The change is confined to Astro's hydration-listener bookkeeping, and the remaining gaps are documented limits.
Merge recommendation: Fine to merge once CI is green on the package tests and the 100% line / ≥90% branch coverage gate. I couldn't run either here.
Most important issues to fix: none outstanding. The optional hardening is the listening.get(target) === state guard in the disposer.
Positives:
Core's lastLaunch is the single source of truth, and host resolution mirrors relaunchWith.
The integration test checks real listener behaviour on real EventTargets, which the mocked unit tests couldn't see.
Every earlier review finding has a regression test.

Re-review of #179 at 7b86dd5 (state from core, per-host listener tracking, repeat records the umbrella-launched document).
I read the surrounding code (packages/astro/src/client.ts, hydration.ts, core relaunchWith / setCarrierLastLaunch / launchCore already-launched) and the tests, including the 7b86dd5 cases. I did not run the tests or tooling (node_modules is not present in this environment).
Earlier findings: all three look fixed
P2, single global activeTarget:activeTargets is per carrier host; release() keeps a document while any host still lists it. Covered by the two-carrier tests.
P3, default document not tracked:tracked = target ?? globalThis.document matches hydration.tstargetOf. Default↔explicit tests cover both directions.
P3, repeat after an umbrella launch never recorded:7b86dd5 records on a repeat only when the host has no entry, and never moves/releases. The new umbrella→registerClient→relaunch({ document }) test covers the success path.

Issue
P2
client.ts:156-161
activeTargets is keyed by the lookup host (lastHost), captured before start(). relaunch({ carrier: undefined }) moves the client to globalThis (core’s spread + setCarrierLastLaunch clears lastHost), but the map entry stays on the old host, so a later document move never stops the previous listener.
P2
client.ts:164-167
A failed fresh launch on a second carrier sharing a live document is a release() no-op, but listenForAstroHydrationErrors already merged that failed launch’s carrier/onError onto the live listener. Hydration errors for the surviving client are then dropped.
Summary
Overall risk: Medium. Confined to Astro hydration-listener bookkeeping; the worst outcome is a leaked listener and dropped or stale astro:hydration-error reports after a carrier reset or a failed sibling launch.
Merge recommendation: Do not merge until the host-keying P2 is fixed. The shared-document restore belongs in the same change; the new tests imply the surviving carrier should keep working.
Most important issue: key activeTargets by the host the new client lives on after a successful start (next.carrier ?? globalThis), and delete the lookup-host entry when they differ.
Positives
Core’s lastLaunch is now the single source of truth, and host resolution for reading that record matches relaunchWith.
Per-host tracking with last-one-out release() is the right shape for two documents and for a shared document that both carriers leave.
Tests go through a fake of core’s carrier (success-only record, repeat returns the live client, relaunch merges) rather than mirroring Astro’s copy of the state.
… on; leave a shared listener alone until the launch succeeds
relaunch({ carrier: undefined }) moves the client to the global carrier, so the entry is keyed by next.carrier ?? globalThis and the lookup
host's old document is released too. A launch onto a document another host's live client listens on no longer merges its carrier and sink
onto that listener before it has succeeded, so a failed sibling launch cannot misroute the live client's errors.

Re-review of #179 after 3156a7c5 (tracked document keyed by the live host; shared listener left alone until the launch succeeds)
I read the new commit and the code around it: client.ts, hydration.ts, client.test.ts, client.integration.test.ts, and core's relaunchWith. I did not run the tests or tooling, so this rests on reading the code only.
New findings: none that block merge. I posted no inline comments.
Earlier findings
Cursor P2, activeTargets keyed by the lookup host after relaunch({ carrier: undefined }): fixed. After a successful start the entry is keyed by live = next.carrier ?? globalThis. The lookup host's entry is deleted and its document released (client.ts:176-187). This matches core, where the spread carries carrier: undefined and the new client lands on globalThis. Both the unit test and the real-registry integration test (client.integration.test.ts:158) cover the sequence.
Cursor P2, a failed sibling launch merging its carrier and sink onto a shared live listener: fixed. When another host already listens on the document, listenForAstroHydrationErrors is deferred until start() succeeds (client.ts:162-171). A failure then neither touches the listener nor flushes (client.ts:196). The integration test at client.integration.test.ts:139 covers it.
CodeRabbit's open comments are stale or optional, as the author replied. The listening.get(target) === state guard in the disposer is optional hardening, because client.ts discards the disposer.
Checked and found fine
Relaunch failure path:relaunchWith stops the old client before launching. A failed relaunch to a new document releases only a document no host tracks. A failed relaunch onto the host's own document is a no-op. The next relaunch() rebuilds from core's unchanged lastLaunch and states all four options again, so any merged-in options self-correct.
Deferred listen on success:existing.pending goes 0→1 in listen and 1→0 in the finally flush, so the window opens and closes once.
Release ordering:activeTargets.set(live, tracked) runs before the release(left) loop. When left === tracked, release finds the host still on it and does nothing.
Serialization:inFlight plus the wait on getCarrierPendingLaunch(host) means plan(host) reads settled state, as core does.
Non-blocking observation (P3, not raised inline)
This falls in the shared-document case the PR description sets aside. With carriers A and B both on document D, the usedByOther deferral means a relaunch({ carrier: A }) opens no launch window on D (client.ts:162). A's client is stopped while it restarts. If the shared listener's options last came from A, an astro:hydration-error fired during that restart finds no client. pending is 0, so queue() drops it (hydration.ts:37). If B registered last, the error goes to B's client instead. The trade-off was deliberate: before this commit a failed sibling launch could misroute the live client's errors. Worth a comment next to usedByOther, but no change is needed for merge.
Summary
Overall risk: Low. The change is confined to Astro's hydration-listener bookkeeping. The remaining gaps are limited to the multi-client-one-document case the PR leaves undefined.
Merge recommendation: Fine to merge once CI is green on the package tests and the 100% line / ≥90% branch coverage gate. I couldn't run either here.

Positives:
Core's lastLaunch is the single source of truth, and host resolution mirrors relaunchWith, including carrier: undefined moving the client to the global carrier.

Failure paths release only what the failed launch opened, and never touch another host's listener.
· branch fix/astro-hydration-state-from-core
P2, lookup-host map key: After a successful start the entry is keyed by next.carrier ?? globalThis, the lookup host is deleted when they differ, and both hosts’ previous documents are released. The unit and real-registry tests follow registerClient({ carrier: X, document: docA }) → relaunch({ carrier: undefined }) → relaunch({ document: docB }) and assert docA is stopped. A relaunch that changes carrier and document together is covered too.
P2, failed sibling launch on a shared document: If another host already listens on that document, this launch does not call listen/flush until start() succeeds, so a failure leaves the live listener’s carrier/onError alone. Real-registry test: A still receives the island error after B fails. A relaunch on its own document still listens before the restart.
No new high-signal issues in 3156a7c. Two-clients-one-document after a successful sibling launch still last-writer-wins on the shared listener; that matches the product limit already called out in the PR.
Overall risk: Low Merge recommendation: Approve. Most important remaining issue: none from this review.
Positives: Core lastLaunch is the single source of truth; per-host tracking with last-one-out release(); real-registry tests actually dispatch astro:hydration-error instead of only asserting mock stop.

Re-review at 3156a7c. The two previous P2s are fixed: tracking is keyed by the live host (next.carrier ?? globalThis) with the lookup host deleted on a carrier move, and a failed sibling registerClient on a shared document no longer merges onto the live listener. Both have unit + real-registry coverage.
One P2 remains, introduced by the skip-until-success fix. I did not run package tests (node_modules is not present in this environment).
Findings
P2 — Skip-until-success drops island errors during relaunch of the listener owner on a shared document
Location:packages/astro/src/client.ts:162 (usedByOther skip) with hydration.ts:37-38 (queue no-ops when pending <= 0)
Problem:usedByOther skips listenForAstroHydrationErrors (so pending is not incremented) until start() succeeds. That correctly avoids merging { carrier: B } onto A's listener when a fresh B launch fails. It also skips opening the hydration window for a relaunch of the host that currently owns the listener. relaunchWithstop()s that client before the new launch; with pending === 0 and no client, queue() drops the event.
Impact: The reason withHydrationWindow exists — island errors during restart must queue, not vanish — fails in the two-custom-carriers-one-document case this PR otherwise treats as in-scope. The guarantee is asserted only for a solo host (a relaunch that stays on its own document still listens BEFORE the restart).
Scenario:
constA={},B={},shared=document;awaitregisterClient('tok',{carrier: B,document: shared});awaitregisterClient('tok',{carrier: A,document: shared});// A listened lastconstrelaunching=relaunch({carrier: A});shared.dispatchEvent(hydrationError(err));// dropped: A is stopped, pending is 0awaitrelaunching;// err is not on A's new client
Fix: When usedByOther, still open the pending window without mergingcarrier/onError. Merge only after success; on failure just flush. Failed sibling launches stay protected (A's options never change), and relaunch errors queue. That needs a hydration helper that bumps pending (or replaces options) without spreading.
Verdict
Overall risk: Medium
Merge recommendation: Request changes
Most important to fix: Keep the hydration window open on a shared document; delay only the options merge, not pending++
What looks solid: Live-host keying for relaunch({ carrier: undefined }), last-user release(), default-document tracking, waiting on getCarrierPendingLaunch, and building on core's lastLaunch instead of a second remembered copy. The real-registry tests are the right tool for this.
…ipping it
Skipping listen for a document another host's client uses also skipped the queueing window, so a relaunch of the host that owns that
listener dropped island errors during the restart. The window is now held (pending+1, options untouched) and the new options are merged once
the launch has succeeded; a failure still leaves the live listener's routing alone. Adds holdAstroHydrationWindow and updateAstroHydrationOptions.

Earlier findings
Cursor P2, the skip-until-success deferral dropped island errors during a relaunch of the listener's owner on a shared document: this looks fixed.
openWindow now calls holdAstroHydrationWindow(tracked) when another host is on the document (client.ts:164-168). That increments pending and leaves state.options alone.
An error during the restart finds no client for the owner's carrier. Because pending > 0, queue() keeps it.
On success, updateAstroHydrationOptions merges the new routing, and the finally flush reports the queue to the new client (client.ts:171-173, 198).
On failure, the options are untouched and the flush settles the hold. release(tracked) is a no-op because another host is on the document.
The integration test "a relaunch of the host that owns a shared document's listener still queues errors during the restart" runs this through the real registry.
Pending count: the hold goes up by one in holdAstroHydrationWindow and down by one in the finally flush, whatever the outcome. If hold returns false (no listener on the target), the code falls back to a normal listen, so the count is still balanced. A unit test covers that branch.
Where the flush looks:flushQueuedAstroHydrationErrors(hydration) resolves the same target as tracked (targetOf uses the default document when target is absent). The hold and the flush therefore act on the same listener.
Repeat on a shared document: a repeat now holds, then merges only its defined onError and carrier after start() returns the live client. The result is the same as before.
Ordering:inFlight serializes calls, so the document can't be stopped between the hold and the update.
Not raised (the shared-document case the PR description sets aside)
If the listener's current options belong to host B while host A relaunches on the same document, an error during A's restart goes to B's live client. The window is held, but B's client is found, so nothing is queued for A. This is last-writer-wins routing on a shared listener. It cannot lose the error, so I'm not treating it as a defect. A one-line comment next to held would help the next reader.

Positives:
The hold and update split fixes the last open P2 without reintroducing the misrouting that the earlier deferral was added to prevent.
The new helpers have focused unit tests, including settling a hold without merging and updating options for an unknown target.
The key scenarios run against the real registry, not only the mocked listen/stop.

Shared-document relaunch window:usedByOther now holds the existing listener (holdAstroHydrationWindow: pending+1, options unchanged) instead of skipping it. New carrier/onError merge only after start() succeeds (updateAstroHydrationOptions); flush always settles the window. A failed sibling still cannot retarget the live listener; a relaunch of the owning host queues island errors during stop().
The real-registry test is the exact sequence from the finding (B then A on one document, relaunch({ carrier: A }), error mid-restart lands on A's new client). Hydration-level tests cover hold/update/flush on success and failure.

holdAstroHydrationWindow opens pending without touching options; updateAstroHydrationOptions merges only after start() succeeds; flush always settles. A failed sibling still cannot change routing (flush looks up state.options, not the failed launch's carrier). A relaunch of the listener owner queues mid-restart errors — covered by the real-registry test (B then A on one document, relaunch({ carrier: A }), island error reported to A's new client).
No remaining P0–P3. Residual, not a blocker: one listener per document, latest successful merge wins (if B currently owns the listener, errors during A's restart still go to B live until A succeeds). I did not run package tests (node_modules is not present).

The previous P2 (skip-until-success closed the hydration window when relaunching the listener owner on a shared document) is addressed:
usedByOther now holds the existing listener (pending += 1, options untouched) instead of skipping it.
Options (carrier / onError) merge only after start() succeeds (updateAstroHydrationOptions).
flush always settles the window, so a failed sibling still cannot steal routing, and a successful owner relaunch reports what queued.
Real-registry coverage: B then A on one document, relaunch({ carrier: A }) gated mid-restart, island error lands on A’s new client.
Walked the other failure paths against the new split: failed sibling hold+flush with no update; failed unique move still releases a document no host tracks; live = next.carrier ?? globalThis still keys the map after relaunch({ carrier: undefined }); host lookup still matches relaunchWith (options?.carrier ?? lastHost ?? globalThis).
Two-clients-one-document after a successful sibling launch remains last-writer-wins on the shared listener. That is the product limit already called out in the PR, not a regression.
