feat(ai): give the assistant the readable page tree of the workspace - #180
With "Account context" on, the assistant still answered "I cannot see your workspace": the prompt named the user and the open page, never the pages that exist.
Why
Asking the live assistant "what is in my workspace?" got a refusal or a request to paste content. The run had no list of pages and no instruction to use its own search_workspace / read_page tools.
What changed
services/osionos-ai/src/runs/workspace.ts — loadWorkspaceOverview(db, user, workspaceId): the readable roots, one level of children with child counts, the five most recent edits. Membership is joined live; every row goes through the page-row read predicate. A parent id is returned only when that parent is readable too, so a private page never leaks through its shared child. Not a member → null; table missing → empty overview.
src/runs/prompt.ts — workspaceBlock() renders a <workspace> block (3,000-char cap, truncated="true" past it, attributes escaped) placed after <view> in the user turn. A new system line tells the model to use its tools instead of guessing and never to say it cannot see the workspace. The data boundary now names <workspace> and stays the last line.
runner.ts / upstream.ts — load the overview when account: true, count it in the context size, pass it to the user turn.
Settings › osionos AI — the "Account context" description now says page titles are sent.
CI: new ai-service job runs services/osionos-ai/scripts/ci.sh: pnpm install on the service's own lockfile, tsc --noEmit, sparse clone of groot models/, then the full suite on the migrations listed in scripts/migrations.txt. Before this PR no CI job ran the service's tests.
Trade-offs
The overview costs one SQL round trip per run, and only when Account context is on.
The tree is capped at 60 entries and two levels. A larger workspace is truncated; the model is told so and can search.
ci.sh runs on groot main, not on the groot commit the live stack runs. A migration merged in groot but not yet applied live passes here first. The Caveat: in the script header says this.
Evidence
Local run of the same script CI runs:
MODELS_DIR=…/groot/models sh services/osionos-ai/scripts/ci.sh
[ci] tsc --noEmit
[ci] suite on 16 migrations
# tests 704
# pass 704
# fail 0
# skipped 0
New tests: tests/workspaceContext.test.ts (ACL harness: another user's private page, a shared child under it, an archived page, another workspace, truncation) and the block-order and char-cap cases in tests/accountContext.test.ts. App: typecheck and lint --max-warnings 0 green.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
When account context is enabled, AI conversations can use an overview of pages you can read, including page titles, hierarchy, and recently updated pages. Private and archived page details are excluded.
Improvements
The account context setting now clarifies that it includes titles of pages you can read.
With "Account context" on, the assistant was told who the user is and what
they have open, but not which pages exist, so it answered "I cannot see your
workspace". The run now loads an overview of the pages the caller can read
(roots, one level of children, the most recent edits) and quotes it in a
<workspace> block of the user turn, after <view>.
- runs/workspace.ts: loadWorkspaceOverview, live membership + the page-row
read predicate; a parent is named only when it is readable too (C101)
- runs/prompt.ts: workspaceBlock (3,000-char cap, escaped attributes), a tool
line that tells the model to use search_workspace / read_page instead of
asking, the data boundary extended to <workspace> and kept last
- tests: workspaceContext (ACL harness: private pages, archived pages,
another workspace, truncation), accountContext order + cap; the prompt
pins of agents/skills/workspaceSkills follow the six-line prompt
No CI job ran services/osionos-ai: tsc and its node --test suite passed on
local gates only. scripts/ci.sh installs the service on its own lockfile
(--ignore-workspace, as ai.Dockerfile does), type-checks it, sparse-clones
groot's models/ and runs scripts/test.sh on the migrations listed in
scripts/migrations.txt. The new ai-service job calls it.
Local run: tsc clean, 704 tests, 704 pass, 0 skipped.
The AI service now loads readable workspace page overviews and adds formatted workspace context to run prompts. The pull request also adds a CI job that installs and type-checks the service, prepares model files, and runs tests with an ordered migration list.
Adds overview data for readable, non-archived pages and recent pages. Tests cover page visibility, ordering, access, and configured limits.
Format and pass workspace context services/osionos-ai/src/runs/prompt.ts, services/osionos-ai/src/runs/runner.ts, services/osionos-ai/src/runs/upstream.ts, services/osionos-ai/src/agents/prompt.ts, services/osionos-ai/tests/accountContext.test.ts, services/osionos-ai/tests/agents.test.ts, services/osionos-ai/tests/skills.test.ts, services/osionos-ai/tests/workspaceSkills.test.ts, src/features/settings/ai/AiPanel.tsx
Adds a capped workspace block to user turns and includes its size in prompt context counts. Updates prompt guidance, data-boundary assertions, related tests, and the account-context setting description.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 4f4af
The change is mergeable with small follow-ups: include the new AI service job in the required CI gate, contain workspace-overview failures so a run is not left stuck, make the prompt wording conditional on the workspace block being present, and stop persisting checkout credentials in the new CI job.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 4f4af
When account context is enabled, readable page metadata is now included with each message. Access filtering remains in place, but the new validation job inherits unnecessary credential authority, and failures in the optional workspace lookup can temporarily block further messages in a conversation.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The new AI-service validation job executes service dependencies and repository-controlled tests with a persisted checkout credential and inherited package-write authority. The repository bind mount makes the checkout available inside execution containers. Equivalent exposure already exists elsewhere in CI, so this is an additional executable dependency path through an existing trust boundary, not a newly granted workflow-wide privilege. Fork restrictions reduce exposure; same-repository events retain the inherited authority.
Medium · reliability · observed: The optional overview lookup adds another unhandled failure path after inserting a running run. Errors other than missing-table errors escape before execution starts, leaving no stream to reattach to while the running row prevents another run in that conversation. Cancellation only publishes to an executor that was never started; recovery relies on stale-run cleanup. The underlying preflight-cleanup weakness predates this PR, but the new lookup extends its failure domain. No reservation has yet been taken on this path.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new outbound data exposure is workspace page metadata readable by the requesting identity, rather than unrestricted database access. CI exposure is separately bounded by event-specific job credentials. Package authority is inherited, while any downstream OIDC access depends on external trust policies not supplied here; production-account compromise is not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The retained credential-exposure and excessive-permission findings converge on one path: code executed by the new service validation job can access the mounted checkout and its persisted credential. Compromised service execution therefore reaches CI authority. Existing jobs already expose equivalent workflow authority to repository-controlled execution, and fork pull requests have restricted credentials; this limits the incremental assessment rather than establishing a new unrestricted external compromise.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Page titles can contain collaborator-controlled text. Attribute encoding prevents literal markup breakout, and the shared system guidance classifies workspace-tagged content as data rather than instructions. These are prompt-boundary controls, not an authorization mechanism or proof that semantic instruction injection is impossible.
observed — Membership is refreshed before overview loading, but membership and page reads do not share an atomic statement. Concurrent revocation can therefore overlap an in-flight read. Existing read and retrieval paths use the same separate-check pattern, so this inspection does not establish a newly introduced atomic-revocation regression.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Run ownership and idempotency checks prevent duplicate execution, but an overview rejection occurs before an executor exists. Repetition reattaches to the incomplete run instead of retrying initialization, and cancellation does not directly close the row. Stale-run recovery provides eventual cleanup without a reservation to refund on this particular path.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Give validation jobs explicit read-only permissions, disable persisted checkout credentials, and avoid credential setup that the tests do not require. For run initialization, either isolate optional overview failure or ensure every post-insertion preflight failure closes the run before returning.

Explanation
The title "feat(ai): give the assistant the readable page tree of the workspace" matches the main change. The PR loads a workspace overview (readable page tree with roots, one level of children, and recent pages) and injects it into the assistant's user turn in a <workspace> block when Account context is enabled. The title is specific and conventional. It omits the CI job and the settings description change, which the guidance allows as secondary details.

Include ai-service in test-gate.
test-gate is the single required check, but it neither depends on nor checks ai-service. An AI service failure can therefore leave the required gate successful.

Disable persisted checkout credentials for the AI service job.
The workflow grants packages: write and id-token: write, so the checkout token is broader than read-only contents for non-fork runs. scripts/ci.sh mounts the repository into /app and runs pnpm install and the test suite. Code executed by those commands can read the persisted token. Fork pull requests receive restricted token permissions, but push, manual, and same-repository pull request runs remain applicable.

Make the "never deny the workspace" rule conditional on the <workspace> block.
The system prompt is static, but the <workspace> block is not always sent. The block is built only when input.account === true and input.user is set. It is also omitted when loadWorkspaceOverview returns null. In those runs the prompt still says the block lists the pages and tells the model never to say it cannot see the workspace. The model may then invent page names. This also affects users who turned Account context off.
Make the rule conditional. Keep the text identical on every call so the prompt cache still works. Update the same line in BASE_LINES in services/osionos-ai/tests/agents.test.ts and the assertion in accountContext.test.ts.
Proposed wording
-The <workspace> block lists the pages the user can read, so never say you cannot see or access the workspace: name its pages and offer to open or read one.+When a <workspace> block is present, it lists the pages the user can read: name those pages and offer to open or read one. When it is absent, use search_workspace instead of guessing page names.

Prevent workspace overview errors from blocking the conversation.
startRun inserts the run before it loads the optional workspace overview. Any overview error other than 42P01 can reject startRun before a failure status is written. The row can then block later runs until the stale-row sweep runs.
