feat(ai): every agent may propose a write, and the prompt says so - #182
On the "Database architect" agent the assistant refused to create a page ("I only have read access, do it yourself"). The agent's tool list was read-only, so the refusal was accurate.
Why
User report from the live app, 2026-10-26: "create me a new page called …" → "I can't create new pages or archives in your workspace — I only have read and search access." The agent's tool list (src/agents/builtins.ts) gave db-architect, analyst and guide READ_TOOL_NAMES only. The general assistant had the write tools, but its prompt never told the model to use them.
What changed
src/agents/builtins.ts: every built-in agent carries the read and the write tools (AGENT_TOOL_NAMES). A write still produces an approval card; nothing is written until the user approves it.
src/runs/prompt.ts, tool line: names create_page (with its content), rename_page and archive_page. Says every change waits for an approval card the user decides, which is also what protects them from instructions hidden in pages. Tells the model to propose the change with the tool instead of telling the user to do it.
tests/agents.test.ts: the "read agents carry no write tool" pin is replaced by "every built-in carries every write tool", and the run-with-agent test asserts the write tools reach the model.
Trade-offs
An agent can now propose an archive or a rename. The approval card shows the real arguments (C5–C9), so the user still decides each write. Editing an existing page's content is NOT in this PR: there is no tool for it yet. It is the next PR (versioned append and block edit, behind its own review).
Stacked on #180 (the tool line it edits is introduced there). Merge #180 first.
The full suite runs in the ai-service job of this PR's CI.

New Features
AI assistants can now propose creating, renaming, and archiving pages directly. These changes wait for approval through an approval card before they take effect.
A user on the Database architect agent asked the assistant to create a page;
it answered that it only had read access and that they should do it
themselves. True for that agent: db-architect, analyst and guide carried the
read tools only. The safety of a write is the approval card the user decides
(C5-C9), not the agent's list, so every built-in now carries the read and the
write tools.
The tool line of the system prompt names create_page (with its content),
rename_page and archive_page, says every change waits for an approval card
(which is also the answer to "are you protected against prompt injection"),
and tells the model to propose the change with the tool instead of sending
the user to do it.
Tests: agents.test.ts pins the new contract (every built-in carries every
write tool; a run with db-architect sends them to the model). Local run of
agents, accountContext, skills, workspaceSkills: 48 tests, 48 pass.
All built-in agents now receive read and write tools. The system prompt names the write actions and describes approval through a user-decided approval card. Tests verify tool availability and the updated prompt.

Summary
Shared tools and agent assignments services/osionos-ai/src/agents/builtins.ts
A shared list combines read and write tools. All built-in agents use it.
Write-tool prompt and tests services/osionos-ai/src/runs/prompt.ts, services/osionos-ai/tests/agents.test.ts
The system prompt names the write tools and describes approval-card behavior. Tests verify the prompt text and confirm that built-in agents and model runs include write tools.
Requests to edit existing page content may receive an incorrect proposed action instead of a clear limitation; narrow the prompt before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to e51d9
More workflows can request page creation, renaming, and archiving, but changes still require explicit approval and permission checks. No approval bypass was established. Some existing failure-handling behavior and database protections remain incompletely verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The expansion increases proposal origins, not the execution principal's privileges. Effective write scope remains the deciding user's permitted workspaces and pages, including eligible archive descendants. The inspected flow does not establish cross-tenant or environment-wide authority.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — Attacker-controlled page text could influence a newly write-capable workflow to propose an unwanted action. In the inspected path, that action still becomes a pending approval and requires an authenticated owner decision plus downstream authorization. No unattended-write or approval-bypass path was established; the instruction text is not itself the security boundary.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Approval lookup and atomic claim both require the authenticated owner. The decision endpoint rejects extra payload fields, and execution rejects item selection for these non-builder tools. Pending status and expiry are part of the claim predicate, preventing concurrent or repeated decisions from executing the same approval twice.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The existing approval claim provides single-execution ownership, not a distributed transaction. Abandoned execution is reconciled to unknown without automatic retry, whereas caught bridge failures are recorded as failed even when the remote outcome may be ambiguous. Archive cascades are multi-step and can partially complete. These behaviors predate this PR; additional proposal origins do not remove the consent gate.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Verify and document database restrictions that keep approval arguments, tool, owner, and target immutable between display and execution. Application paths inspected treat these fields as immutable, but production schema enforcement was unavailable; this is a proof gap, not an observed mutation vulnerability.
proposed — Before adding automatic retries, preserve ambiguous remote outcomes explicitly and use a stable replay identity for page creation. The current single-approval claim does not prevent duplication through a later, separately approved proposal after a lost response.

Limit the tool instruction to supported changes.
If a user asks to edit existing page content, no write tool can perform that edit. The instruction to propose any requested change with a tool can lead the assistant to propose a different action instead of explaining the limitation. Limit this instruction to creation, renaming, and archiving. Tell the assistant to explain when an edit is unsupported. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
