What

  • At startup a background thread runs curl -sSI https://github.com/SusieeTheLinuxUser/rig-hub/releases/latest and reads the tag from the location: header. There's no new crate, and it doesn't use the GitHub API (60 requests/hour per IP).
  • If that tag is newer than this build, a small "⬆ Rig Hub X is out" button appears under "Report a bug" and opens the release page. Nothing is downloaded.
  • Silent on any failure: curl missing, offline, or odd output.
  • On Windows curl runs with CREATE_NO_WINDOW, so it doesn't flash a console window. Rig Hub is a windowed app there.

Version compare

alpha < beta < rc < release, with numbers compared as numbers (alpha.10 > alpha.3). Garbage on either side means "no update".

Tests

  • cargo test: 12 passed (4 new in update_tests). cargo clippy --all-targets -D warnings: clean on Linux.
  • Checked the real redirect: location: …/releases/tag/v0.1.0-alpha.3, the format the parser expects.
  • Not built for Windows locally (no mingw here), so CI covers that.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The app now checks for newer releases and displays an update button when one is available. Select the button to open the latest releases page.
    • Release checks recognize stable versions and numbered alpha, beta, and release-candidate versions, and ignore invalid version tags.

Walkthrough

The application checks release headers for a newer version, stores a valid newer tag in State, and displays a button that opens the latest releases page.

Changes: Release Update Check

Layer / File(s) Summary
Version and tag parsing
src/main.rs
Adds comparison for supported three-component versions and numbered alpha, beta, and rc prereleases. Extracts and validates a tag from the last matching Location: header. Tests cover version ordering and valid or invalid tags.
Update check and navigation
src/workers.rs, src/main.rs
Adds an optional release tag to State. A one-shot worker uses curl with a 10-second timeout to check release headers and stores a tag only when it is newer than the build version. The navigation UI displays a button when State.update contains a tag.

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review 1ffd6

The release notification change is mergeable after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 1ffd6

The change is notification-only: release metadata cannot choose the browser destination or issue device commands. Risk is limited, but the startup executable-selection boundary remains unresolved for supported Windows installations.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The new automatic startup check launches curl by bare name, delegating executable identity to host search policy. If a lower-trust actor can write a searched directory, that executable could run with Rig Hub's authority. This remains a conditional concern, not a verified attack path: supported Windows deployments' effective search directories and permissions are unresolved, and the documented installation is per-user.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Release-header manipulation can affect notification text or visibility, but the inspected flow does not give that data control over device commands or browser destinations. Executable substitution, if deployment permissions permit it, would instead execute code with the affected Rig Hub process's authority; broader privilege or cross-user exposure is unproven.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The supplied security assessment retains no verified findings. Its executable-resolution candidate is deferred because write access by a lower-trust actor to a searched directory has not been established. Repository inspection identifies a per-user Windows installation but does not resolve effective search-path permissions.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The network-to-UI boundary restricts accepted tags to numeric version components and known prerelease names. The tag is not interpolated into a shell command or navigation URL. Process invocation uses separate arguments, while executable selection remains dependent on host resolution policy.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Network execution and parsing occur before acquiring the state mutex. Successful publication changes only the update field through the existing synchronization helper, and the UI reads it under the same state mutex. The new path introduces no partial device-configuration transition requiring rollback.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make executable identity explicit for supported Windows installations, or document and validate the executable-search and directory-permission assumptions. This would reduce reliance on an unresolved deployment boundary without treating executable substitution as demonstrated.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 60.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 5 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Once at startup, a background thread asks GitHub where /releases/latest
redirects (curl -I, no new crate, not the 60-per-hour API) and compares
that tag with this build. When it's newer, a small "Rig Hub X is out"
button opens the release page. Any failure stays silent.

Pre-releases sort below their release (alpha < beta < rc < release) and
compare numerically (alpha.10 > alpha.3). On Windows curl runs without a
console window.
