Found while reviewing everything since v0.1.0-alpha.3.

The problem: the new "newer Rig Hub is out" notice compares GitHub's latest release tag with the version baked into the build (Cargo.toml). That still said 0.1.0-alpha.3. Tagging v0.1.0-alpha.4 from it would make every alpha.4 install nag "Rig Hub 0.1.0-alpha.4 is out" forever.

Fix:

  • Cargo.toml → 0.1.0-alpha.4 (plus Cargo.lock).
  • release.yml: a first step that fails when the pushed tag (minus the v) isn't the Cargo.toml version, so this can't slip again.

Checked: cargo clippy --all-targets clean, cargo test 12/12. Guard tested locally: passes for v0.1.0-alpha.4, fails for v0.1.0-alpha.5.

Rest of the review (settings save, lock handling, version compare, Kraken memory slots and sensors, button actions, Windows console flags): no real bugs found.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Release Management
    • Updated the package version to 0.1.0-alpha.4.
    • Release runs triggered by a tag now verify that the tag version matches the package version; non-tag runs skip this check.

The new update notice compares GitHub's latest tag with CARGO_PKG_VERSION.
Tagging v0.1.0-alpha.4 on a build that still says alpha.3 would make every
alpha.4 install say "Rig Hub 0.1.0-alpha.4 is out" forever. The release
workflow now fails early when the tag and Cargo.toml disagree.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The package version changed from 0.1.0-alpha.3 to 0.1.0-alpha.4. For tag-triggered runs, the release workflow now fails if the tag version does not match the version in Cargo.toml.

Changes: Release version check

Layer / File(s) Summary
Package version and tag validation
.github/workflows/release.yml, Cargo.toml
The package version is now 0.1.0-alpha.4. For tag-triggered runs, the workflow checks that the tag name without its leading v matches the package version and fails if they differ.

Possibly related PRs

  • SusieeTheLinuxUser/rig-hub#11: Adds a startup check that compares the latest release tag with the build version. This PR adds a release check that validates the tag against the package version.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 3072d

The version bump and tag check are safe to merge. Tagging an older commit would still bypass the check, so maintainers should tag only commits that include it.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 3072d

The new check blocks mismatched release tags before building or publishing. It does not expand permissions or change publication behavior for matching tags. No material security risk was found introduced or worsened by this change.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The changed control affects the existing five-target release matrix. The workflow retains contents: write permission and the same release action; the PR does not add credentials, permissions, deployment targets, or publication destinations.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The tag enters the new Bash check through a quoted GITHUB_REF_NAME expansion, rather than interpolation into shell source. The check only reads the tag and manifest and runs before build and release publication; it introduces no additional write authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The new validation has no persistent side effects and repeats the same comparison for a fixed tag and checkout. Failure or interruption before publication requires no gate-specific cleanup. Release-action retry, duplicate-upload, and concurrent-publication semantics remain external and unchanged by this PR.

Explanation

The title names two changes: the version bump to 0.1.0-alpha.4 in Cargo.toml, and a new release workflow guard that blocks releases when the tag does not match Cargo.toml. Both appear in the raw summary and the PR objectives. The title is specific, and it covers the main change without listing files.

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Enforce the check outside the tagged revision.

If a maintainer tags the parent commit 3a2303e as v0.1.0-alpha.4, GitHub runs that commit’s workflow, which does not contain this check. If the build succeeds, it publishes 0.1.0-alpha.3 binaries under the alpha.4 tag. (docs.github.com)

Use a release gate outside the tagged workflow, and prevent legacy workflows from publishing without it.

Not changing this. Releases are tagged from main after merge, and main will contain this check. Tagging an old commit by hand is a manual mistake that a separate gate wouldn't be worth the extra machinery for in a one-person repo.

@SusieeTheLinuxUser Understood. Releases tagged from main after the merge will include the check. I acknowledge your decision to accept the risk of tagging an older commit.
