The Open Veracity Standard (OVS)

Philosophy

The Open Veracity Standard (OVS) is an open-source framework designed to solve the "Market for Lemons" in political advertising. It operates on a simple premise: Truth should not be mandated by the state; it should be demanded by the market.

Rather than attempting to legislate political speech or rely on algorithms to filter out lies, OVS provides a voluntary, highly visible "Veracity Badge" (akin to the Nordic Ecolabel/Swan Mark). Politicians who use the badge signal to the System 2 (analytical) brains of voters that their claims are backed by objective, publicly accessible data.

Claims without the badge are entirely legal, but over time, the market will learn to interpret their absence as a guarantee of political swindling.

System Architecture

The OVS framework consists of three pillars:

  1. The Visual Layer (The Badge): An unmissable, standardized graphical badge (often employing a Green/Yellow/Red confidence gradient) placed on digital and physical political advertisements.
  2. The Data Layer (The Transparency Notice): A machine-readable JSON-LD payload attached to the ad, providing the exact mathematical model or public dataset used to generate the claim.
  3. The Enforceability Layer (The License): A legal Code of Conduct. By voluntarily using the trademarked OVS Badge, the claimant agrees to a binding contract regarding objective proof and symmetrical retractions.

How It Works in Production

  1. Pre-Deployment: A political campaign drafts an ad ("Our plan creates 10,000 jobs").
  2. Compilation: The campaign links their macroeconomic math to the OVS veracity-claim.json schema.
  3. Deployment: The ad is launched with the OVS Badge.
  4. Validation: Open-source watchdogs, journalists, and automated tools (like the European Fact-Checking Standards Network or AI agents) instantly audit the JSON payload against public databases.
  5. Failover: If the math is fraudulent, the campaign is legally bound by the OVS Code of Conduct to issue a Corrective Retraction.

The Implementation (Working Demo)

This repository serves as the official specification, schemas, and legal framework for the Open Veracity Standard.

To see the standard in action, please visit the working prototype repository. It contains a fully functional POSIX shell validator (ovs-validate.sh), a live browser UserScript for dynamic badge injection, and a simulated political ad environment:
