feat(keychron): Hall-effect keyboard controls behind a flag - #1287
Not verified on hardware. Built from static analysis of Keychron Launcher. Cannot merge until OpenMouse-Project/keyboard-protocol#6 is released. Controls are behind the openmouse.keychronHallEffect flag, off by default.
What's included
Controls for Keychron Hall-effect (HE/TMR) keyboards, on the shared device workspace tabs:
Overview: board identity from the device (command version, key matrix, travel step, profile count).
Performance: a keyboard-shaped key map with real key positions, legends from the board's current keymap and actuation in mm; actuation and rapid-trigger sliders limited to the board's declared range (board minimum to maximum plus dead zone); writes to all keys or the selected keys; live key travel. A write is two steps: write to the keyboard, then an explicit Save.
Buttons: key remapping with a layer switcher, a searchable picker built from the firmware's keycode table, a warning confirmation before risky replacements (for example the only layer key on a layer), a result line that says "set" only after the driver's read-back resolved, and a Restore previous action. Remaps persist in the keyboard's own memory. Macros, tap dance, encoders and resetting the keymap are out of scope and the page says so.
Profiles: switch, rename, clear (inline confirm).
Advanced: response curve graph (key travel in mm, output 0 to 127, Launcher's ranges, Linear preset; read-only when no key uses the analog mode), calibration start/read/stop with an inline confirm, and the switch axis.
Keychron keyboards show a neutral keyboard outline instead of the mouse placeholder.
Everything is behind a flag: set localStorage["openmouse.keychronHallEffect"] = "1" and reload. With it unset, no Keychron HID filter is offered and no Keychron client is created.
Dev-only preview
?keychronPreview=1 (dev server only) installs a fake Keychron board (v4, VIA protocol 12) so the UI can be tried without hardware. Add words after a comma: v5, legacy (protocol 10 keycode table), reject (board ignores key writes), novia (board ignores the VIA commands). It is imported only under import.meta.env.DEV; a search of the production dist finds none of it. The fake board is made-up data, not real firmware behaviour.
For reviewers
CSS budget raised from 165,000 to 168,000 bytes in build/check-bundle-size.ts (note added there): styles/areas/keychron.css adds about 3 kB.
Main chunk grew about 39 kB (now 1,246,243 of 1,600,000 bytes, 78%) because the Keychron driver and its keycode tables load eagerly, as other drivers imported by device-clients.ts do. Total JS is 3,562,903 of 3,600,000 bytes, so there is little room left. Lazy-loading the driver is a possible follow-up; it is not done here. The physical layout tables (about 250 kB) are already a separate lazy chunk.
Small shared-controller change: KeyboardClient gets an optional recoveredWorkspace(), and applyKeyboardCommand merges it once after a command throws. Only the Keychron client implements it; other keyboards are unaffected, but it is in the shared error path.
The keyboard outline (public/devices/keychron-keyboard.svg) is a generic silhouette drawn for this change, not real product art.
Dead zone and the rapid-trigger minimum follow what Launcher does (read from its code): the range runs from the board minimum to maximum plus dead zone, and there is no separate rapid-trigger minimum.
Test plan
Run locally on this branch, against a local checkout of keyboard-protocol#6 (linked with npm install --no-save; package.json and the lockfile are unchanged):
npm test: 583 of 583 pass (adds tests for the adapter, travel and curve ranges, the picker, remap flows including warnings, rejection and legacy firmware, tab wiring, device images, a CSS guard, and the preview board in v4 and v5).
npx tsc --noEmit: clean.
npm run build: passes.
npm run size: passes. MAIN 1,246,243 / 1,600,000; CSS 166,915 / 168,000; JS 3,562,903 / 3,600,000.
npm audit: not run.
Outstanding checks that need a real board (none have been done):
Open a real HE board and read version, profiles and names.
setTravel then Save round trip, ideally on a v5 board, and the value read back.
Response curve write and read back.
Calibration start, read state and stop.
Keymap read: legends match what Launcher shows.
A setKeycode write with read-back (this persists in the keyboard's memory).
Layer keys on a legacy-protocol board (protocol 10 keycode table).
Confirm what the work mode, key mode and calibration state bytes mean.
Look at the UI in Light, NieR and RTL.
The UI has only been looked at in the dev preview with the fake board, never against a real keyboard.
Note
Add Keychron Hall-effect keyboard support behind experimental flag
Adds a full Keychron Hall-effect keyboard client (keychron-keyboard.ts) handling profiles, travel settings, response curves, key remapping, live key travel, and calibration with confirmation guards and post-failure workspace recovery
Adds UI: key map, response-curve editor, remap card with searchable keycode picker, and Keychron-specific workspace tabs, all lazily loaded for keychron-family snapshots
Gating: client creation and HID filters only activate when the flag in keychron-flag.ts is enabled (localStorage entry set to 1)
Adds a dev-only fake-board preview installer (keychron-preview.ts) driven by a query parameter, plus translations and a Keychron keyboard SVG asset
Raises bundle budgets to 170,000 bytes CSS and 3,700,000 bytes JS in check-bundle-size.ts
Risk: applyKeyboardCommand in controller.ts now requests recoveredWorkspace from clients on command failure; KeyboardClient gains an optional method, so out-of-tree implementations without it skip the recovery merge
Added experimental support for compatible Keychron Hall-effect keyboards, including key remapping, profiles, actuation and rapid-trigger settings, live key-travel readings, calibration, and response-curve editing.
Added keyboard layouts and visual indicators for key modes and selected keys. Feature availability may vary by model or firmware.
Added warnings and confirmation steps for remapping actions that could limit access to other layers.
Bug Fixes
Preserved updated keyboard state when a command reports an error.
Key-travel telemetry no longer displays applying or completion messages.
Wraps KeychronHidClient for the keyboard workspace: profiles, staged
actuation and rapid-trigger writes with an explicit save, the response
curve with Launcher's ranges, live key travel, calibration, the switch
axis and key remapping through setKeycode. Keychron HID filters and the
keyboard factory only include these boards when the
openmouse.keychronHallEffect flag is set in localStorage.
KeyboardClient gains an optional recoveredWorkspace() so a failed write
can still show the keymap the board actually holds.
Not verified on hardware. Needs @openmouse/keyboard-protocol with the
Keychron driver (keyboard-protocol#6).
Overview, Performance, Buttons, Profiles and Advanced tabs on the shared
workspace: a keyboard-shaped key map with legends and actuation values,
actuation and rapid-trigger sliders with multi-key writes, a response
curve graph, calibration, the switch axis, and key remapping with a
layer switcher, a searchable picker, confirmations for risky changes and
a restore action. Keychron keyboards get a neutral keyboard outline in
place of the mouse placeholder.
Raises the CSS budget from 165,000 to 168,000 bytes for keychron.css.
?keychronPreview=1 installs a fake Keychron board (v4 at VIA protocol 12).
Add v5, legacy (protocol 10), reject (ignores key writes) or novia
(ignores VIA) after a comma. It is imported only under
import.meta.env.DEV, so it is not in the production bundle.

Walkthrough
This change adds experimental, feature-gated Keychron Hall-effect keyboard support. It adds device commands and controls, VIA remapping, a development HID preview, and supporting tests, translations, styles, artwork mapping, and bundle-size notes.
A local-storage flag gates Keychron HID filters and client creation. Keyboard types, workspace routing, and available tabs include the Keychron family.
Helpers convert and validate travel values, calculate curve bounds, load physical or fallback layouts, resolve legends, and filter keycode catalog entries. Tests cover conversion bounds, curve edits, and picker behavior.
HID client and workspace commands src/device/keychron-keyboard.ts, src/device/controller.ts, src/device/keychron-keyboard.test.ts
The client reads Keychron state and handles profiles, travel, curves, remapping, key-travel readings, and calibration. On command failure, recovered workspace state is merged into the current workspace.
VIA remapping and key selection src/device/keychron-remap.ts, src/features/devices/cards/KeychronRemapCard.tsx
The remapping model loads VIA keymaps, validates layer and key changes, tracks original assignments, and handles warnings, confirmation, and readback. The remap card provides layer, key, and picker controls.
The panel displays device status and provides travel, profile, curve, calibration, and remapping controls. Supporting changes add translations, styles, keyboard artwork mapping, layout tests, and a bundle-size note. The CSS budget increases from 165,000 to 168,000 bytes; the JavaScript budget is unchanged.
Development HID preview src/device/preview/keychron-preview.ts, src/device/preview/keychron-preview.test.ts, src/main.tsx
Development startup can install a fake Keychron HID board from query parameters. Tests cover preview settings, driver operations, remapping, and simulated failures.
OpenMouse-Project/openmouse#140 — The issue requests code splitting before new driver UI increases bundle pressure. This PR records the Keychron panel’s measured CSS and JavaScript additions but does not add code splitting.
The experimental controls remain feature-gated. Failed post-write reads no longer leave stale profile controls available, and absent optional data is distinguished from connection failures. No actionable blocker remains established; real-board validation is still outstanding.

🟠 Highcards/KeychronKeyboardPanel.tsx:163
Actuation-only writes for static keys fail with a RangeError: their zero advancePress and advanceRelease values remain in draft and are submitted here, then KeychronKeyboardClient.command validates both distances before omitting them for static mode. Clamp the submitted sensitivity values to the displayed bounds so writes succeed even when those fields haven't been edited.
travelToSteps unconditionally validates both rapid-trigger distances against the positive board minimum even when rapid trigger is off. TravelForm initializes these fields from advancePress/advanceRelease (zero for static keys, including the preview's Typing profile) and submits them unchanged when only actuation is edited. KeychronKeyboardClient.command calls this conversion before omitting those fields for static mode, so a valid actuation-only write throws RangeError and never reaches the keyboard. Skip rapid-trigger range validation when disabled, or normalize the unused fields before conversion.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The Keychron controls are default-off and include confirmation and read-back safeguards. Confirm the required protocol release works with the committed dependency, and resolve the open concern about recovering controls after an axis-read failure following a profile write.

Make the preview board reject sends while it is closed.
FakeKeychronBoard.sendReport accepts commands when opened is false. A real WebHID device rejects them with InvalidStateError. The preview tests call refresh without open(), so they can pass where a closed device would fail. Check opened at the start of sendReport, and call open() in the tests before sending commands.

Convert DataView input by its byte range in sendReport.
new Uint8Array(data as ArrayBuffer) does not read the bytes of a DataView. A DataView has no length property and no iterator, so the constructor creates a zero-length array. request[0] is then undefined. The command check fails, and the preview returns without replying to a valid DataView command. The BufferSource parameter permits DataView input.
Suggested fix
- const request = new Uint8Array(data as ArrayBuffer);+ const request = ArrayBuffer.isView(data)+ ? new Uint8Array(new Uint8Array(data.buffer, data.byteOffset, data.byteLength))+ : new Uint8Array(data);

If the recovery read also fails, the failure path retains state.keymap, yet the new kb.keychronRemapFailed message says the map shows what the keyboard holds.
The user is told that a potentially stale assignment is the board's current assignment.
This can occur when: A remap write or readback fails and the subsequent readKeymap(layer) fails.

Update the `kb.keychronRemapFailed` failure path to avoid presenting
`state.keymap` as the keyboard’s current map when `client.readKeymap(layer)`
also fails; report the map as unknown in that case, while preserving the
existing behavior when the recovery read succeeds.
This test file covers keychronPreviewRequested (lines 9-15). It also runs FakeKeychronBoard workflows through KeychronKeyboardClient (lines 17-55). No test calls installKeychronPreview, so a regression in the installer does not fail the suite. The installer runs only in development builds. src/main.tsx stops startup when it returns false.
Add a test that stubs localStorage, location, and navigator.hid, and restores them after each case. Cover these three cases:
No preview query: returns true. It does not write the flag or call location.reload().
Preview query, and openmouse.keychronHallEffect is not "1": sets the flag to "1", calls location.reload(), and returns false.
Preview query, and the flag is already "1": replaces navigator.hid with the HID device built from FakeKeychronBoard, and returns true.

Add tests for installKeychronPreview alongside the existing
keychronPreviewRequested tests. Stub localStorage, location, and navigator.hid,
restoring their original values after each case; verify the no-query path
returns true without writing the flag or reloading, the uninitialized preview
path sets the flag and reloads before returning false, and the
already-initialized path installs the HID device backed by FakeKeychronBoard and
returns true.
The test named replacing the only layer key waits for confirmation and writes nothing until then checks only the returned keymap, the warning, and the result. None of these assertions detects a key write issued before the confirmation check. A change that calls setKeycode before the guard would still pass, because the returned state does not reflect that write.
Add an assertion on the key writes made during the unconfirmed call. For example, count the writes the fake board receives after the request and expect zero. If FakeKeychronBoard does not record key writes, add that record first.

remapKey has no explicit choosability check before setKeycode; the picker filters offered codes, but the shared command accepts a numeric code from other callers.
An unsupported assignment may be written to keyboard memory instead of being rejected before the write.
This can occur when: A caller sends keychronRemap with a code such as 0xBEEF that the board cannot use.

When setKeycode throws after changing the board, the failure path can read the changed map but never records the pre-write code in originals.
The map shows the changed key while the session offers no Restore action for its previous assignment.
This can occur when: A write reaches the board but its acknowledgement or internal readback fails, followed by a successful full-keymap read.

Picker buttons are enabled for any selected layout position, even when its remap.keymap entry is undefined; remapKey rejects that position.
The card invites a remap that consistently fails with a range error.
This can occur when: A layout displays a position absent from the VIA keymap, such as a separately represented encoder.

curveScale prefers any defined travel.max, even zero, over a positive axisMaxMm; it then treats the zero result as missing and permits the full 255-byte range. A zero placeholder maximum may therefore bypass a known axis limit.
The curve editor and command validator can allow x coordinates beyond the known axis travel.
This can occur when: Status contains travel.max: 0 while the axis reports, for example, maxMm: 3.5.

Mark the Keychron workspace stale when a profile write succeeds but its refresh fails.
keychronSelectProfile sends selectProfile, then calls refresh(). If refresh() fails, the board keeps the new profile and the panel keeps the old one. Later writes reach the new profile. keychronRename, keychronSave, and keychronClear have the same gap. Mark the workspace stale after a failed refresh, and block profile-dependent commands until a refresh succeeds.

Check the minimum after rounding in travelToSteps.

Check the minimum after rounding in travelToSteps.
travelToSteps checks mm against bounds.minMm before rounding, but it does not check the rounded value. If travel.min is not a multiple of unit, a request at the minimum can round to a step below it. For example, a 0.12 mm minimum with a 0.1 mm unit yields 0.1 mm, and setTravel receives that value.

throw new RangeError(`${label} must be between ${bounds.minMm} and ${bounds.maxMm} mm.`);

Update travelToSteps to validate the rounded step value against both bounds:
reject represented travel below bounds.minMm or above bounds.maxMm, preserving

Clear the cached curve when the read after a curve write fails.
198-200: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Clear the cached curve when the read after a curve write fails.
If readCurve() throws after writeCurve() succeeds, keychronWriteCurve publishes no state. The cached curve keeps its pre-write value, and Reset and the dirty check compare against it. Mark the curve unknown on this path, as refreshAfterWrite does for profile writes.

Update keychronWriteCurve so a failed readCurve() after a successful
writeCurve() publishes state with the cached curve marked unknown, then rethrows
the read error. Keep the existing confirmation and recovery behavior when
readCurve() succeeds.
Assert the controller snapshot after a failed calibration start.
Assert the controller snapshot after a failed calibration start.
The new test checks only client.recoveredWorkspace(). No test calls applyKeyboardCommand, so removing the recovered-snapshot merge in src/device/controller.ts would not fail any test. Without that merge, the calibration card can miss the started phase on this failure path.
Add a controller-level test for a failed calibration start. Assert that the snapshot the controller produces reports calibrationPhase as "started".

Add a controller-level test for a failed calibration start that exercises
applyKeyboardCommand and asserts the controller-produced snapshot reports
calibrationPhase as "started". Keep the existing recoveredWorkspace assertion;
the new test should cover the controller snapshot merge on this failure path.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
refresh() awaits readCurve() without checking whether the board supports curves, so a curve-read rejection may block publication of otherwise available keyboard controls.
The keyboard workspace cannot load, or a post-write refresh clears its editable state, despite the other controls being usable.
This can occur when: A supported Hall-effect board provides status and profile data but does not implement the curve read, or consistently rejects it.

Keep a failed axis read from clearing the Keychron workspace.
Line 133 calls readAxisType() without a catch, so a rejected read propagates out of refresh(). On the post-write path, refreshAfterWrite() sets keychron to null and the panel hides every Keychron control. A board whose axis read keeps failing cannot complete refresh(), so the workspace cannot recover through that path. A null axis is already a valid state: AxisCard renders its no-axis note when kc.axis is null, and the write path and curveScale accept a null axis.
