feat(devices): keyboard placeholder image for keyboards with no art - #1357
Keyboards with no art of their own now show a keyboard placeholder instead of the mouse one. The new image is a black keyboard silhouette with a white question mark, the keyboard version of unknown-device.png.
This covers:
every device the app labels a keyboard (kind: "keyboard")
any device whose reported name contains "keyboard"
The placeholder shows in the device hero, the sidebar device list and the devices home. A keyboard image that fails to load falls back to the keyboard placeholder, not the mouse one (new placeholderImage(kind)). A keyboard that has its own art (for example Keychron M6) keeps it.
Removed (replaced by the new placeholder)
src/shared/KeyboardArt.tsx and its three .keyboard-art* rules in advanced.css. This was the drawn stand-in used only for Arbiter keyboards in the device hero. Arbiter boards now show the placeholder.
public/devices/keychron-keyboard.svg. This was the generic outline for Keychron HE/TMR boards. Those now resolve to the placeholder.
Image
public/devices/unknown-keyboard.png: 1428×716, transparent, 6.5 KB. It is served locally through LOCAL_OVERRIDES until a maintainer uploads it to the R2 bucket. public/devices/README.md has the provenance note and the upload follow-up.
The outline was traced from a pngtree stock render of a 60% keyboard. Only the shape carried over: no colour, keycaps or legends. Please confirm you're comfortable with the source before merging.

Add keyboard placeholder image for devices with no keyboard art
Adds a keyboard placeholder PNG in public/devices/ and a DeviceImageKind type (mouse / keyboard) in device-images.ts
deviceImage and the new placeholderImage take a device kind. Unknown or failed-load images now pick the keyboard placeholder for keyboards (by kind or a name containing “keyboard”) and the mouse placeholder otherwise
Removes the inline KeyboardArt SVG illustration from DeviceHero, along with its styles and shared component. Keychron Hall-effect/TMR names without art now resolve to the keyboard placeholder
Behavioral Change: deviceImage calls without a kind still default to the mouse placeholder, except names containing “keyboard” now return the keyboard placeholder; the Keychron SVG asset is deleted from public/devices/
Anything labelled a keyboard with no render of its own now shows a black
keyboard silhouette with a question mark, the keyboard twin of the mouse
unknown-device.png, instead of the mouse placeholder. Load errors fall back
to the placeholder for the device's kind.
The Arbiter KeyboardArt drawing and the Keychron HE keyboard-outline SVG
were stand-ins for the same job and are replaced by the new placeholder.

Keyboard image resolution now uses a shared placeholder for keyboards without matching artwork. Device views pass device kind to image lookup and use kind-specific placeholders after load errors. DeviceHero no longer uses the KeyboardArt SVG illustration.
Changes: Keyboard Image Fallbacks
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Placeholder resolution and asset mapping src/shared/device-images.ts, src/shared/device-images.test.ts, public/devices/README.md
The resolver adds keyboard-aware placeholder selection and maps Keychron Hall-effect names to unknown-keyboard.png. Tests cover keyboard and mouse placeholders and retained device-specific artwork. The README records the image source and local-serving notes.
Device list image fallbacks src/app/AppSidebar.tsx, src/features/devices/DevicesHome.tsx
Both views pass device kind to image lookup and use a matching placeholder when an image fails to load.
DeviceHero uses the keyboard placeholder for keyboard image errors when no custom artwork is supplied. The KeyboardArt component and its CSS rules are removed.
The keyboard fallback is mergeable with a small testing follow-up: the hero's error-handler selection remains untested, although the inspected connected-keyboard path selects the correct placeholder.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: a keyboard-specific placeholder image for keyboards that have no artwork. The changeset adds unknown-keyboard.png as the keyboard placeholder, adds placeholderImage and DeviceImageKind selection in device-images.ts, uses the placeholder in the device hero, sidebar, and devices home, and removes KeyboardArt. The title does not mention the removal of KeyboardArt or the Keychron outline replacement, but those are secondary to the main change. The conventional-commit prefix feat(devices): matches the scope of the change.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This replaces generic keyboard illustrations with a shared keyboard placeholder in device views and image-error fallbacks. The change is limited to presentation, preserves existing product artwork, and introduces no material operational or customer-data risk.

src/shared/device-images.test.ts: 1
371-374: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value
Cover the keyboard load-error branch in DeviceHero, not only placeholderImage.
The test the load-error placeholder follows the device kind calls only placeholderImage. The onError handler in src/features/devices/DeviceHero.tsx:85 selects the kind separately: placeholderImage(keyboard && !snapshot.deviceArtwork ? "keyboard" : "mouse"). No test renders DeviceHero or dispatches an image error event. Changing line 85 to always pass "mouse" would leave every current test passing.
The repository has no component-rendering test setup. package.json lists no DOM or rendering test library, and no *.test.tsx files exist.
Renaming the test corrects only its title. It does not cover the handler.
Move the kind selection into an exported pure helper in src/shared/device-images.ts. Call that helper from the onError handler, and test the helper directly. Keep the test title aligned with what it exercises.
