fix(topics): use each target's db_shard when routing and trimming - #4166
All shards used to share one mock Redis in tests, so a read or write on the wrong db_shard could never fail a test. This PR gives each shard its own mock, adds multi-shard tests for the code paths that look up a target's shard, and fixes the bugs those tests found.
Test infrastructure
mock_redis (openc3, cmd-tlm-api and script-runner-api spec helpers) keeps a separate MockRedis per db_shard. Store now exposes db_shard so build_redis can pick the right one.
Python test_helper.mock_redis gives each shard a FakeValkey with its own FakeServer. New helpers: set_target_db_shard, shard_redis, setup_system(db_shards=...).
The db_shard caches (Store, QuestDBClient) are reset per test.
rspec/mocks/standalone now loads once when spec_helper loads. Loading it mid-example from local_s3 pushed a new mock space, so allow_any_instance_of stubs leaked into later specs.
Bugs fixed (Ruby and Python)
Target name parsing:group_topics_by_db_shard, get_packets and the LogWriter trim used a regex that captured the stream type (e.g. TELEMETRY) instead of the target. They now share the new Topic.target_name_from_topic, which reads the {TARGET} hash tag.
RouterTopic.route_command wrote commands to shard 0. It now writes to the target's db_shard.
inject_tlm acks were written to, and read from, shard 0. They now use the target's db_shard.
LogWriter trim:
Ruby: the shard lookup now uses the topic's own scope.
Python: the trim loop iterated the dict wrongly, so it never trimmed anything. It now trims each topic on its target's shard.
Python Microservice.microservice_cmd looked up str keys, but read_topics messages have bytes keys. ADD_TOPICS (sent by TargetModel.dynamic_update) was silently ignored by Python decom and TSDB microservices.
Known issues not fixed here
ScopeModel#undeploy relies on an UNKNOWN shard lookup that breaks easily.
Thread-local topic offsets are keyed without the shard.
Python TargetModel has no as_json, so create() drops db_shard.
Test plan
openc3 rspec: 4776 examples. One failure, the thread_manager_spec.rb:67 timing flake, which passes when run alone.
cmd-tlm-api rspec: 845 examples, 0 failures
script-runner-api rspec: 220 examples, 0 failures
Python pytest: 3162 passed
New multi-shard tests fail when routing is forced to shard 0 or run against the old code
Commands, acknowledgments, telemetry, and packet data now use each target’s configured database shard, reducing the risk of missed or mismatched data when targets are distributed across shards.
Telemetry and command lookups, stream routing, and TSDB access now consistently respect target shard assignments.
Topic target names are extracted more consistently, and topic-addition messages work with either string or byte keys.
- Give mock_redis a separate mock per db_shard in the Ruby spec helpers
and Python test_helper so wrong-shard reads fail tests
- Add Topic.target_name_from_topic: the old regex in
group_topics_by_db_shard, get_packets and LogWriter captured the type
- Write RouterTopic.route_command and inject_tlm acks to the target's
db_shard instead of shard 0
- Trim LogWriter topics in the topic's scope; the Python trim loop
iterated the dict wrongly and never trimmed
- Read bytes keys in Python microservice_cmd so ADD_TOPICS takes effect

Walkthrough
The changes route target data and topic operations to configured database shards across stores, APIs, topics, microservices, QuestDB queries, and log cleanup. Test helpers now provide separate Redis mocks per shard, and new tests exercise shard-specific reads and writes.

Store exposes and retains its shard, and EphemeralStore forwards it. Test helpers create per-shard Redis mocks and configure targets with shard assignments.
Topic parsing and shard routing openc3/lib/openc3/topics/*, openc3/python/openc3/topics/*, openc3/spec/topics/*, openc3/python/test/topics/*
Topic target extraction uses a shared helper. Command routing selects the target shard. Topic tests cover command and telemetry streams, acknowledgments, and event streams across shards.
Target data and API access openc3/lib/openc3/api/tlm_api.rb, openc3/python/openc3/api/tlm_api.py, openc3/spec/api/*, openc3/python/test/api/*, openc3/spec/models/*, openc3/python/test/models/*
API and model tests cover shard-specific command and telemetry reads, CVT storage, target metadata, counts, and scope cleanup.
Microservices and QuestDB shard use openc3/lib/openc3/microservices/interface_decom_common.rb, openc3/python/openc3/microservices/*, openc3/python/openc3/topics/decom_interface_topic.py, openc3/python/openc3/microservices/microservice.py, openc3/spec/microservices/*, openc3/python/test/microservices/*, openc3/spec/utilities/questdb_client_spec.rb, openc3/python/test/utilities/test_questdb_client.py, openc3/spec/utilities/reingest_job_spec.rb, openc3-cosmos-cmd-tlm-api/spec/models/streaming_api_spec.rb
Injection acknowledgments, decom microservice operations, QuestDB lookups, reingest connections, and streaming tests use or verify the configured shard. microservice_cmd accepts byte or string keys for command fields.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 830e9
Intermittent failures remain possible in threaded multi-shard tests, but the identified risk is confined to test setup. The change is mergeable with awareness of that limitation.
Security architecture risk: High · up to 4825f
Correcting shard selection makes telemetry on additional shards readable, but packet reads do not recheck authorization for the streams named in a subscription ID. The Python log writer also begins trimming streams without confirming that their archive uploads succeeded. Both warrant design-level review.
Retained concerns
High · security · inferred: A caller-admitted get_packets request can name arbitrary topic streams in its ID. The method checks scope-level telemetry permission but not the embedded scope, target, or packet before using the target to select a shard. Corrected selection extends this existing input-binding gap to nonzero-shard streams; access to a particular restricted stream depends on its shard placement and the deployment's authorization rules.
High · reliability · inferred: The Python log writer now executes delayed stream trimming, but the delay is not a confirmation that its asynchronous archive upload succeeded. After upload failure, cleanup can delete Redis entries and discard its cleanup record; subsequent shutdown can remove the remaining temporary file. This can compromise retention of telemetry or command-log evidence.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed read path can reach target telemetry on any configured shard for which the caller-supplied scope resolves a target. It does not imply that shards are tenant boundaries; reading a particular other scope's stream additionally requires its topic key to be present on the selected shard.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A caller able to invoke get_packets can supply a constructed topic-and-offset ID instead of one returned by subscribe_packets. The corrected parser routes it to the named target's shard, while get_packets performs no per-topic permission check. This increases effective exposure of nonzero-shard telemetry relative to the base; deployment-specific permission enforcement remains unverified.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The inspected core Ruby authorization implementation checks for a scope and, when enabled, a valid token; it does not itself evaluate the supplied target and packet parameters. Deployment-specific authorization implementations were not inspected, so this is not evidence that every deployment lacks finer-grained controls.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Activation of Python stream trimming makes successful archival a prerequisite for retaining a complete historical record. That prerequisite is not enforced when an upload fails or remains unfinished at cleanup time.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Bind every get_packets topic to the authorized scope, target, and packet, or use subscription IDs whose contents and provenance are verified before shard lookup.
proposed — Gate stream trimming and cleanup-record removal on confirmed archive success, with recoverable state for failed uploads and interrupted workers.

@ryanmelt this feels like a big change but the vast majority is adding additional testing for sharding. Focus the review on the core changes which are all real issues that the new testing exposed.
Note there is overlap and conflicts with #4106. Some issues are fixed in both and some only in the respective branch. Which ever merges first I'll cleanup the other and resolve.
Use patch.object with addCleanup so each test gets empty caches and the
originals are restored afterwards, rather than mutating global state.
