test(cmd-api): wait for handler thread before sending commands - #4140
EmilyRagan wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
The interface cmd handler thread starts reading from the newest message the first time it reads a topic. setUp only slept 1ms, so a command sent before then was never seen or acked, causing a 30s ack timeout flake. Poll until the thread has recorded its offset for the INST cmd topic. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Register handler cleanup before the readiness wait.
If the five-second deadline expires, self.fail() raises inside setUp. unittest then skips tearDown, so the started handler thread is never stopped or joined. The handler reads the command topic until it receives a shutdown message, so the thread can keep running into later tests in the same process. Register the cleanup immediately after self.icht.start(). unittest runs cleanup callbacks even when setUp fails.
Cleanups run in last-in, first-out order. Register the join first so that graceful_kill runs before the join.

Claude recommended build the same topic list receive_commands builds, then poll until every topic has an offset. Replace the cmd_topic lines with:
# The handler thread starts reading from the newest message the first time it reads a topic.
# Wait for it to record its offsets or a command written before then is never seen (and acked).
offsets = EphemeralStore.instance().topic_offsets
topics = [f"{{DEFAULT__CMD}}TARGET__{name}" for name in self.interface.cmd_target_names]
topics.append(f"{{DEFAULT__CMD}}INTERFACE__{self.interface.name}")
topics.append("OPENC3__SYSTEM__EVENTS")
deadline = time.time() + 5
while not all(topic in offsets.get(self.thread.native_id, {}) for topic in topics):
if time.time() > deadline:
self.fail("Interface cmd handler thread never started reading")
time.sleep(0.001)
