Summary

LATEST resolves an item to the packet that received it most recently. Several APIs either ignored that, resolved it against the wrong thing, or accepted LATEST where it can't name a packet. This PR fixes those cases in both Ruby and Python.

Streaming and limits

  • StreamingObject#id includes item_key, so a LATEST item no longer collides with an explicit subscription to the same packet item. StreamingObjectCollection#remove falls back to removing by key.
  • get_limits resolves LATEST using the caller's scope and authorizes the resolved packet instead of the literal LATEST.
  • TargetModel caches the item-to-packet map per scope, so LATEST can't resolve against another scope's map.

Writes

  • override_tlm, normalize_tlm, enable_limits and disable_limits apply to every packet that contains the item.
  • set_limits and set_state_color accept LATEST and validate every packet before changing any, so a failure can't partially apply.
  • Each expanded packet is authorized before any change is made.

History

  • get_tlm_values with start_time queries every packet that contains a LATEST item at the requested time, instead of the packet received most recently now.
  • Each candidate packet is queried with the value types and limits it actually has. Asking for a missing column (e.g. VALUE__F) used to fail the whole QuestDB query.
  • tsdb_lookup aliases every column, since QuestDB renames duplicate names across tables (VALUE_2), which broke decoding.
  • get_tlm_available reports the best value type and limits across all LATEST packets.

Rejecting LATEST where it can't name a packet

  • Streaming rejects LATEST for commands, and skips LATEST packets the user can't access instead of failing the whole request.
  • get_tlm, get_tlm_packet, get_tlm_buffer, get_tlm_cnt, get_packet_derived_items, wait_packet, subscribe_packets and inject_tlm raise a clear LATEST error.

Python get_tlm_available and DERIVED items

  • Python counted a DERIVED item's read conversion as CONVERTED, but Packet.decom stores that value as the raw value with no __C. Historical lookups then queried a missing QuestDB column. It now returns RAW, matching Ruby.

Test plan

  • bundle exec rspec spec/api/tlm_api_spec.rb
  • uv run pytest test/api/test_tlm_api.py
  • New QuestDB integration tests: openc3/test/integration/tsdb/{python,ruby}/*latest_tsdb*

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • LATEST telemetry items are supported across value lookups, availability, overrides, normalization, and limit controls.
    • Historical LATEST queries select the newest applicable packet and support point-in-time and range queries.
    • LATEST streaming subscriptions can coexist with explicit subscriptions and be removed independently.
    • Time-series lookups can preserve nested row results when requested.
    • Telemetry packet table discovery is supported across database shards.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Unsupported packet-level uses of LATEST now return clear errors.
    • Limit changes validate all matching packets before applying updates.
    • Item-to-packet caching is isolated by scope and normalized target name.

jmthomas and others added 8 commits October 12, 2026 16:11
- Include item_key in StreamingObject#id so a LATEST item no longer
collides with an explicit subscription to the same packet item
- Fall back to removing by key in StreamingObjectCollection#remove
since items are added as [key, item_key] but removed by key alone
- Resolve LATEST in get_limits using the caller's scope, not
  $openc3_scope, and inline the single-use _get_item helper
- Authorize the resolved packet in get_limits (Ruby and Python)
instead of the literal LATEST, and upcase the names

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Key TargetModel item_map_cache by the scoped item_map_key instead of
the target name so LATEST can't resolve against another scope's map
- Clear the cache entry in test_cvt_model so the LATEST test no longer
  depends on test order

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- override_tlm, normalize_tlm, enable_limits and disable_limits expand
LATEST to every packet containing the item via
  _tlm_process_args_all_packets
- set_limits and set_state_color accept LATEST and validate every
packet before changing any so a failure can't partially apply
- Authorize each expanded packet before making any change
- Factor _tlm_extract_args and _tlm_resolve_packet_name out of
  _tlm_process_args (Ruby and Python)

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- get_tlm_values with start_time queries every packet containing a
LATEST item instead of the packet received most recently now
- A point in time queries each candidate packet on its own since the
ASOF JOIN only looks up other packets at the first packet's last row
- A range puts regular items first so they drive the rows; a range of
only LATEST items keeps using the packet received most recently now
- Alias every tsdb_lookup column since QuestDB renames duplicate names
across tables (VALUE_2), which broke decoding of the second one
- Add a flatten option to tsdb_lookup and QuestDB integration specs

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Historical LATEST queries each candidate packet with the value type
and limits that packet has; asking for a missing column (VALUE__F)
  failed the whole QuestDB query
- get_tlm_available reports the best value type and limits across all
LATEST packets instead of only the one received most recently
- Factor _tlm_available_value_type out of get_tlm_available

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Streaming rejects LATEST for commands since the item to packet map
  only covers telemetry
- Streaming skips LATEST packets the user can't access instead of
failing the whole request, raising only if none are accessible
- get_tlm, get_tlm_packet, get_tlm_buffer, get_tlm_cnt,
get_packet_derived_items and wait_packet raise a clear LATEST error

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Both take a packet name directly rather than through
_extract_target_packet_names so they missed the LATEST check; share
it as _tlm_reject_latest (Ruby and Python)

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Python _tlm_available_value_type counted a DERIVED read conversion as
CONVERTED, but Packet.decom writes no __C for it, so historical
lookups queried a missing QuestDB column
- Add Python and Ruby tests for a DERIVED item with a read conversion

- Match streaming removal fallback on source_key so removing an
explicit item by key leaves a LATEST item for the same packet
- Authorize every LATEST candidate packet in get_tlm_available before
reading its definition, in Ruby and Python
- Upcase target_name before building the item-to-packet map key so
lowercase lookups share the refreshed cache and store entry
- Align test_tlm_api_latest_tsdb base timestamp to microseconds

📝 Walkthrough

Telemetry and limits APIs now support LATEST item operations across mapped packets. Historical lookups compare candidate packet timestamps. QuestDB lookups add configurable result flattening and packet-table discovery. Item-map cache keys include normalized targets and scope. Streaming subscriptions expand LATEST; API documentation scans match exclusions against basenames.

Changes: LATEST Telemetry and Limits

Scope-qualified item map cache
openc3/lib/openc3/models/target_model.rb, openc3/python/openc3/models/target_model.py, openc3/spec/models/*, openc3/python/test/models/*
Item-to-packet map cache keys use normalized target names and include scope. Tests cover case normalization, scope separation, and cache expiration.
QuestDB table discovery and result decoding
openc3/lib/openc3/utilities/questdb_client.rb, openc3/python/openc3/utilities/questdb_client.py, openc3/lib/openc3/models/cvt_model.rb, openc3/python/openc3/models/cvt_model.py, openc3/spec/utilities/questdb_client_spec.rb, openc3/python/test/utilities/test_questdb_client.py
QuestDB lookups accept flatten and preserve nested single-row results when it is false. Selected columns use unique aliases that map back during decoding. Packet-table discovery returns packets whose tables exist.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2d198

LATEST support across telemetry, limits, history and streaming looks sound. One narrow edge case remains. In multi-shard QuestDB deployments, a historical range query that mixes a regular item with LATEST items can pair values from slightly different times. Single-shard setups are unaffected. This can be accepted as a follow-up or called out in the PR. The remaining comments are lint and cleanup items.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2d198

Per-packet authorization is preserved, but streaming handoff can discard matching subscriptions, and interrupted multi-packet restoration can leave monitoring controls inconsistent. Enforcement of deployed scope restrictions could not be fully verified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Source-key group removal is also used for internal per-object handoff. For a default-key LATEST subscription spanning multiple packets, handing the first eligible object to an existing realtime thread removes every sibling sharing its source_key from the logged collection. The topic snapshots share the underlying object arrays, so remaining candidates can disappear before being transferred, silently reducing monitored packet coverage. The base removed only the exact object. Initial whole-collection handoff and custom item aliases do not take this particular failure path.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: LATEST restoration now spans independently persisted packets. If enable_limits or normalize_tlm succeeds for one packet and a later write fails or execution stops, other matching packets can remain disabled or overridden. There is no aggregate completion record or compensation in the inspected paths. Authorization preflight prevents partial mutation caused by authorization denial, but does not provide recovery after writes begin. The per-packet persistence behavior predates the PR; the newly introduced risk is applying that contract to one multi-packet restoration request.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The intended mutation fan-out is the set of packets containing one requested item in a target and scope. Each requires tlm_set authorization before any write. The identified restoration concern therefore affects monitoring state within an authorized candidate set, rather than demonstrating newly gained packet or tenant authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — StreamingObject authorizes the concrete target and packet before deriving the scoped stream topic and before collection insertion. Read-only command streaming requests cmd_info rather than command-execution permission.
  • observed — The streaming request supplies scope and token, and channel validation only requires scope presence. The checked-in authorization fallback checks scope presence and, when configured, token validity; it does not enforce packet permissions. An enterprise replacement is loaded when available. This pre-existing boundary remains deployment-dependent, not a verified bypass introduced by this PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Collection add and remove operations are mutex-protected and indexed by subscription identity. API removal applies only to that broadcaster's realtime and logged threads. However, internal handoff invokes the same remove operation as external unsubscribe, coupling exact-object ownership transfer to source-group cancellation semantics.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate exact-object removal for handoff and completion from source-key group cancellation for unsubscribe. Preserve sibling candidates until each has transferred ownership or reached its own terminal state.
  • proposed — Define recoverable batch semantics for multi-packet control restoration, either through coordinated persistence or explicit per-packet completion and reconciliation. Distinguish validation-before-write guarantees from persistence and interruption recovery.

subscription ID includes source_key so LATEST and explicit items can coexist.
Historical LATEST lookups skip candidate packets with no QuestDB table yet.

The api docs spec reads every def as a public API, so the nested add
helper in tlm_api.py failed the doc and Ruby/Python parity checks. Match
the skip filters on file basename so a checkout path containing "stream"
no longer drops every Python script file.

A range of only LATEST items resolved the packet received most recently
but queried it with the requested value type and limits, so a packet
without those columns failed the whole QuestDB query. Use the matching
candidate, which carries the type and limits that packet has.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Select historical packets from the requested range, not the live CVT.

When a range contains only LATEST items, this branch selects the packet received most recently now. If another candidate held the item during the requested range, the query omits that candidate’s history. If the selected packet has no QuestDB table, the query can fail instead of using a candidate with historical data. Filter candidates by existing tables and resolve the range from their historical timestamps. The matching Ruby path needs the same correction. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Based on learnings, a runtime-added packet has no QuestDB table until its first row, and historical LATEST must exclude candidates without tables.

Keep range rows aligned across QuestDB shards.

When a regular item and a LATEST item belong to different shards, this query places the regular item first. QuestDB then queries each shard separately and merges rows by ordinal position, not packet time. A LATEST value from a later timestamp can therefore appear beside an earlier regular-item row. Align shard results by timestamp before selecting candidate values, or reject this mixed-shard range until it can be aligned. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Restrict the fallback sweep to the requested item key.

An unknown explicit item pair must not remove other subscriptions. Do not restrict the fallback to key_only requests. A LATEST expansion can produce a different concrete object ID when the packet mapping changes, so an explicit-item removal can require the fallback. Match both source_key and item_key.

Remove the redundant LATEST resolver call.

_tlm_packet_names and CvtModel.determine_latest_packet_for_item use the same packet map. The resolver always returns a member of packet_names, so the union adds nothing. The resolver also performs an unnecessary CVT read for every candidate.

In Python, a candidate without current CVT values can raise before the existing try block. This behavior is pre-existing, not introduced by this PR.
