What changed

  • Interface microservices (Ruby and Python) now always queue CVT and stream writes, using DEFAULT_UPDATE_INTERVAL of 0.1 seconds
  • UPDATE_INTERVAL 0 (or less) disables queuing to write immediately
  • Document the new default and the disable option in interfaces.md

Why it changed

Queuing to Redis should be enabled by default. Customer indicates they had a 8x improvement in packet processing by setting UPDATE_INTERVAL in COSMOS 7.3.

Testing strategy

Unit test

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Interface data is now queued and written every 0.1 seconds by default, improving high-rate processing efficiency.
    • Update intervals can be configured globally across database shards.
    • Set the interval to 0 to write packets immediately without queueing.
  • Documentation

    • Updated configuration guidance explains interval behavior, performance trade-offs, and immediate-write mode.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for default, configured, shard-wide, queued, and direct-write behavior.

- Interface microservices (Ruby and Python) now always queue CVT and
stream writes, using DEFAULT_UPDATE_INTERVAL of 0.1 seconds

🟡 Changes recommended

Queue intervals are misconfigured for nonzero Redis shards, and the documented CVT batching is not implemented.

3 open findings
What changed in this PR

2 important, 0 nits.

Makes queued Redis writes the default for interface microservices at a 0.1-second interval.

Changes:

  • Enables queueing by default in Ruby and Python.
  • Allows non-positive intervals to disable queueing.
  • Documents and tests the new behavior.

Shard-specific queues retain the wrong interval, and normal CVT/decom writes are not actually batched as documented.

Open concerns for a human

  • Changing the default to queued writes means the CVT and the telemetry stream are now updated up to 0.1s after each packet instead of immediately. Anything that reads the CVT right after a packet arrives will see this. It should go in the release notes.
  • I couldn't run the tests because Ruby and the Python test dependencies aren't installed, so the new specs and tests haven't been run.
  • Test dependencies and Ruby are unavailable, so runtime verification remains outstanding.
  • The Trivy Scan / openc3-scan job failed and its log isn't available. The PR only changes Ruby, Python, tests and docs, not dependencies or images, so the failure is probably caused by a vulnerability database update or the infrastructure. A person should check it.
  • Trivy Scan failed without available logs; its cause and relationship to this PR cannot be determined.
Turn-by-turn log

Turn 1: Claude (commit df98c0ec5)

I fixed the two SonarQube findings in the new Python tests. I found no defects in the change itself: Redis writes are now queued by default every 0.1 seconds, an UPDATE_INTERVAL of 0 or less turns queuing off, and Ruby and Python behave the same way. I couldn't run the tests here because dependencies aren't installed.

  • Fixed: openc3/python/test/microservices/test_interface_microservice.py:890 - SonarQube python:S5906: replaced assertEqual(im.queued, True) with assertTrue(im.queued)
  • Fixed: openc3/python/test/microservices/test_interface_microservice.py:912 - SonarQube python:S5906: replaced assertEqual(im.queued, False) with assertFalse(im.queued)
  • Concern: The Trivy Scan / openc3-scan CI job failed but its log isn't available. This PR only changes Ruby, Python and docs, not dependencies or images, so the failure is probably caused by a vulnerability database update or the infrastructure, not by this change. A person should check it.
  • Concern: Changing the default to queued writes means the CVT and stream are now updated up to 0.1s after each packet instead of immediately. Anything outside the unit tests that reads the CVT right after a packet arrives would see this change in behavior. That is the intended design, but it should be called out in the release notes.

Turn 2: Codex (commit 75f0451a3)

Fixed a sharding regression in both implementations and added regression tests. Previous SonarQube fixes are correct; Python syntax and diff checks passed, but test suites could not run.

  • Fixed: openc3/lib/openc3/microservices/interface_microservice.rb:609 - Nonzero telemetry shards retained a one-second queue interval; apply the configured interval to every telemetry target shard.
  • Fixed: openc3/python/openc3/microservices/interface_microservice.py:696 - Fixed the equivalent shard interval bug and added Python and Ruby regression coverage.
  • Concern: Trivy Scan failed without available logs; its cause and relationship to this PR cannot be determined.
  • Concern: Test dependencies and Ruby are unavailable, so runtime verification remains outstanding.

Turn 3: Claude (no changes)

I made no changes this turn. Turn 1 already fixed both SonarQube S5906 findings, and Codex's turn 2 fix for the shard update interval is correct. Telemetry writes go to the queued store chosen by Store.db_shard_for_target, which is the set of shards being configured. Ruby and Python behave the same, and the docs match the new default.

  • Concern: The Trivy Scan / openc3-scan job failed and its log isn't available. The PR only changes Ruby, Python, tests and docs, not dependencies or images, so the failure is probably caused by a vulnerability database update or the infrastructure. A person should check it.
  • Concern: I couldn't run the tests because Ruby and the Python test dependencies aren't installed, so the new specs and tests haven't been run.
  • Concern: Changing the default to queued writes means the CVT and the telemetry stream are now updated up to 0.1s after each packet instead of immediately. Anything that reads the CVT right after a packet arrives will see this. It should go in the release notes.

📝 Walkthrough

Interface microservices now queue raw packet stream writes by default at 0.1 seconds and apply configured intervals across database shards. The changes add queued-store interval handling, tests and documentation, and copyright and license notices to two scripts.

Changes: Queued-write intervals

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared queued-store intervals
openc3/lib/openc3/utilities/store_queued.rb, openc3/python/openc3/utilities/store_queued.py, openc3/python/openc3/utilities/store_queued.pyi, openc3/python/openc3/utilities/store_implementation.py, openc3/python/test/utilities/test_store_queued.py, openc3/spec/utilities/store_queued_spec.rb, openc3/python/test/test_helper.py, openc3/spec/spec_helper.rb
Ruby and Python queued stores now support class-wide update intervals for existing and future shard instances. Explicit per-instance intervals remain supported. Tests cover interval propagation, overrides, and reset of shared interval state.
Interface defaults and shard configuration

Ruby and Python interface microservices use a 0.1-second default interval and configure queued stores across shards when the interval is positive. A zero or negative interval disables queuing. Tests cover interface settings and queued or direct telemetry writes. The documentation describes raw-stream batching and interval tradeoffs.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9faf3

The change is mergeable with a bounded edge-case risk: a direct caller supplying NaN can stop writes from flushing on a future Python shard. Reject that value before merging if this API is used with untrusted intervals.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 9faf3

Default batching improves throughput but makes interface packet delivery depend on an in-memory, best-effort queue. Failed flushes or process interruption can lose buffered packets after packet handling has returned. Existing shard separation and the direct-write opt-out limit the impact; no new privilege escalation or cross-tenant access was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Default interface writes now return after volatile enqueue rather than Redis completion. Workers remove actions before persistence and do not restore failed batches; final shutdown drains are best-effort. Consequently, Redis failures or process interruption can leave accepted raw packet writes missing without propagating the flush failure to the packet reader. This is an existing opt-in failure mode newly exposed by default, not a newly introduced queue algorithm.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A failed queue can affect writes for the topics sharing that queued-store shard in the producer process. All-shards interval propagation broadens timing effects across local queue instances, but the inspected change does not confer access to additional shards, credentials, or tenants.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected input-to-store path retains packet identification, target-enable checks, scoped topic construction, and target-based shard selection. The changed boundary is completion and durability: successful enqueue is no longer evidence that Redis accepted the packet write.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The queues have no configured capacity limit, and flush loops drain until empty. If production outpaces persistence, no queue-local bound or backpressure policy contains the backlog. This is a conditional failure-containment risk; an independently exploitable denial-of-service path was not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define the default queue's delivery and overflow contract explicitly. Where packet preservation is required, use a bounded, recoverable consumption strategy with explicit handling of partial writes and replay duplicates, and expose failed batches and unsuccessful shutdown drains operationally.

Assert the interval on each shard separately.

Both patched instance methods return the same mock for shards 0 and 1. If the production code omits set_update_interval(0.1) for shard 1, the current assertions still pass because they only check the shared return mock.

Return a separate mock for each shard and assert that both shard-specific mocks receive set_update_interval(0.1).

Seems like the shebang for the 2 scripts makes sense but is it required?

…ards

- Pass the interface UPDATE_INTERVAL to TelemetryTopic.write_packet so a
queued store created after startup (e.g. shard resolved after a failed
lookup) uses it instead of the 1s default
- Clarify that UPDATE_INTERVAL 0 only disables raw packet stream queuing
- Move script shebangs above the license header so direct execution works

Pass update_interval to new queued-store factories.

Each factory starts its worker before set_update_interval runs. If the worker reaches its first sleep first, it can use the one-second factory default and delay queued writes.

For unidentified packets, both interface microservices pass the queue flag to CvtModel.set. A positive UPDATE_INTERVAL therefore writes these CVT updates through StoreQueued. The current sentence incorrectly states that CVT writes are unaffected.

Suggested fix
-Decommutated telemetry and the Current Value Table (CVT) are written separately by the decom microservice and are not affected by this option.
+Decommutated telemetry is written separately by the decom microservice and is not affected by this option. CVT updates for unidentified packets received by an interface use queued writes when UPDATE_INTERVAL is greater than 0 and are written immediately when UPDATE_INTERVAL is 0 or less.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Start new shard queues at the selected interval.

If a packet arrives soon after queue creation, the worker can still be sleeping for its initial one-second interval. These calls create the worker with the queued store’s one-second default, then change update_interval to 0.1. The setter does not interrupt that sleep. The first queued writes can therefore arrive about one second late. Pass update_interval to instance when creating both stores. Apply the same correction to openc3/python/openc3/microservices/interface_microservice.py, Lines 707-708. Existing workers need a separate wake-up mechanism if their interval changes during a sleep. Writes are routed to each target's db shard, so setting the interval on
only shard 0 and the telemetry target shards left other queues, including
ones created later, on the 1 second default. StoreQueued now remembers
the interval and applies it to existing and future shard instances.
