…efaults Malformed JSON in cmd_params, interface_cmd or protocol_cmd (and, in Python, a missing target_name or cmd_name) is now acked with an error instead of killing the command handler thread. A released critical command whose target was disabled while held is acked with an error. Python validators now reject only on an explicit False and report the exception message. Ruby now treats missing range_check, hazardous_check, validate and log_message as true. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Replace the private flag helper in InterfaceCmdHandlerThread with a default: keyword on ConfigParser.handle_true_false, returned when the value is nil. The default is nil so existing callers are unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Handlers process missing fields and invalid cmd_params, apply defaults to command flags, and return disabled-target errors for released critical commands. Tests cover these cases and range, hazardous, validation, and logging defaults. ConfigParser.handle_true_false now accepts a default for nil input. |

The changes improve error handling and preserve existing command access checks, but deliberately change when validation permits execution. No introduced authorization bypass was established. Deployment-specific validator policies and critical-approval cleanup could not be fully verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- observed — Python no longer raises immediately when target_name is missing. For cmd_buffer messages, this newly allows identification against the consuming interface's mapped command targets, followed by resolved-target enablement checks. Normal inspected producers supply target_name. Exploitation through arbitrary direct publication was not established because broker permissions were not inspected.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — The inspected command API authorizes before publishing to scoped command topics. The handler retains target-enable checks and delegates transport to Interface.write, which checks connectivity and write permission. These controls are counterevidence to an API-level authorization-bypass claim; they do not establish broker ACL enforcement.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — The handler's critical-record create/read behavior is unchanged. The enterprise implementation and approval endpoint were unavailable, so release authorization, record consumption, concurrent release, replay prevention, and recovery cleanup could not be verified. The new disabled-release return does not itself establish those lifecycle guarantees.
- inferred — The malformed-input protection is not exhaustive: Python cmd_params catches ValueError, while its JSON object hook can raise other exceptions, and some decoding remains outside the guarded command block. Such escaping exceptions can terminate command reception without acknowledgment. These residual paths existed at the base and were not shown to be worsened by this PR.

Explanation
The title names the main change: malformed and released commands now get acknowledgments, and flag defaults are aligned. It matches the Ruby and Python interface microservice changes and the default-flag changes. The title is a single, specific sentence and does not use vague terms.

Summary
Interface command handler fixes, Ruby and Python kept identical:
cmd_params,interface_cmdorprotocol_cmdwas parsed outside the rescue, so it raised out of the handler, killed the command thread and was never acked. It's now acked with an error.target_name/cmd_nameraisedKeyErrorout ofprocess_cmd. It's now acked with an error like Ruby.Target <X> is disabled. Ordinary commands for disabled targets are still not acked.pre_check/post_checkresult (includingNone= unknown) and returned the full traceback as the reason. They now reject only on an explicitFalseand use the exception message, matching Ruby.ConfigParser.handle_true_false(nil)isnil, so a missingrange_check,hazardous_check,validateorlog_messagewas treated as false. Ruby now defaults these to true (andraw/manualto false) through a local helper, matching Python.handle_true_falseitself is unchanged.Behavior change: router
cmd_buffermessages carry no flags, so Ruby will now validate and log routed commands, as Python already does. All COSMOS API callers already send every flag explicitly.Fixes the IF-CMD-001 (except the write-protocol STOP item, which is intentionally kept), IF-CMD-005 and IF-CMD-006 deviations in
