feat(cmd-tlm-api): skip ahead when realtime streaming falls behind - #3949
When a realtime StreamingChannel subscription can't keep up with the telemetry rate, it currently keeps reading from its last offset forever. It falls further and further behind, graphs show stale data, and the growing backlog is held in the cmd-tlm-api process. Users never find out. For realtime displays, current values matter more than a delayed replay.
StreamingThread#redis_thread_body now records the newest msg_id read per topic and calls a check_lag hook after each pass. The hook does nothing in the base class, so LoggedStreamingThread (historical playback, which also runs this method) is unchanged.
RealtimeStreamingThread#check_lag measures lag as now minus the time of the most-behind topic's newest message (taken from its Redis stream ID). If the lag is over OPENC3_STREAMING_MAX_LAG_SECONDS (default 10, 0 disables it):
A stream that is catching up gets a grace window of the same length. Each window in which the lag shrinks starts a new window. This keeps logged→realtime handoff continuous, since a freshly handed-off stream can start a bit behind and then catch up.
If the lag doesn't shrink over a whole window, or goes over 6× the threshold (Redis only keeps about a minute before trimming), the stream sets every object's offset to Topic.get_last_offset (using the right db_shard), logs a warning, and sends a notice.
Client protocol (opt-in, backwards compatible)
Streaming messages have always been an Array of results. Some existing consumers would break on anything else: ArrayplotWidget iterates the message, and the Ruby/Python StreamingWebSocketApi.read_all concatenates it. So notices are opt-in. A client that sends notices: true in its add request may also receive an Object:
Graph.vue (Telemetry Grapher and the LINEGRAPH widget) now opts in and reports skips through its existing error mechanism: the toolbar alert icon and dialog, and screen-error for embedded graphs. Repeated skips are merged into one entry (total seconds and a count). An embedding screen gets it again at most once a minute.
Testing
New spec/models/realtime_streaming_thread_spec.rb: under-threshold, skip after a window with no improvement, catching-up gets more time, immediate skip when far behind, most-behind topic is used, disabled via env.
streaming_api_spec.rb: notices only go to clients that opted in, add opts in, and an end-to-end realtime stream with 2-minute-old data skips ahead and notifies.
Full cmd-tlm-api rspec: 773 examples, 0 failures.
pnpm lint --max-warnings 0 in openc3-vue-common: clean.
Not verified in a running browser.
Note: this works best together with a bounded XREAD count (separate PR). Without it, one read can return the whole backlog before the lag check gets a chance to run.
A realtime stream that can't keep up would fall further and further
behind, holding an ever growing backlog. Now when the newest data read is
more than OPENC3_STREAMING_MAX_LAG_SECONDS (default 10s) old and not
catching up, the stream jumps to the latest data and sends an opt-in
SKIPPED notice, which the graph reports in its errors.

The skip-ahead logic for realtime streaming is sound. Topic.get_last_offset accepts db_shard, offsets are updated on the shared objects that the next Redis pass reads, and only RealtimeStreamingThread overrides check_lag. I fixed both SonarQube findings that were failing the quality gate; I could not run the test suites here.

Reviewed the full PR and verified that the previous reviewer fixed both reported SonarQube findings. Found no additional defects requiring changes; test suites were not run because dependencies are unavailable.
Lag compared the API host clock to Redis-stamped msg_ids, so clock skew
between hosts counted as lag and caused constant skipping. Measure lag as
the gap between the newest msg_id read and the stream's newest msg_id,
which both come from the Redis clock. Only advance topics that are behind.

Walkthrough
Realtime streams check message lag against Redis stream heads and can advance lagging topic offsets. Subscriptions can opt in to notices. Graph displays skipped-stream notices as errors.

Streaming threads pass the newest message IDs to a lag-check hook. Realtime streams compare message IDs with Redis stream heads and advance offsets for topics over the configured lag threshold. Tests cover lag checks, skips, and notifications.
Graph requests notices and turns SKIPPED notices into an error. Later notices accumulate skipped time and occurrence count; existing errors are re-emitted at most once per minute.

Possibly related issues
OpenC3/cosmos issue 4089: The PR advances lagging stream offsets and surfaces skipped data in Graph, which overlaps with the issue’s reported backlog and slow catch-up behavior.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 6a8e8
Resolve the lag-check failure path before merging: a stream-head error can stop realtime updates. Also reject threshold values that silently defeat skip-ahead behavior.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 6a8e8
The change preserves existing access controls and makes skipped data visible to opted-in clients. However, a failure in the new lag check can stop all realtime data in a subscription without disconnecting it or automatically restoring delivery. This creates a bounded but meaningful availability and recovery risk.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: An exception from the newly added stream-head lookup terminates the subscription’s entire realtime producer, including topics on otherwise healthy shards. Cleanup clears the producer pointer but leaves the channel subscription registered, with no automatic restart of its collection. A lag-monitoring failure can therefore become a sustained telemetry-delivery outage until client action recreates the stream.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated failure boundary is the entire realtime collection owned by one subscription, potentially spanning several database shards. A shared dependency failure could affect multiple subscriptions, but no attacker-controlled mechanism for forcing that failure or gaining additional data access was established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Subscription authentication remains ahead of StreamingApi creation. Notices use the same subscription-specific broadcast key as telemetry and contain skip metadata rather than additional telemetry or topic identifiers. The new notice option does not replace object authorization.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Redis reconnect attempts reduce interruption risk, but exhausted head-query failures still terminate the producer. Cleanup may send an empty completion array without disconnecting the channel; Graph does not interpret that array as a request to reconnect. A notice-delivery exception can likewise terminate the producer after offsets have already advanced.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Give lag measurement and post-skip notification explicit failure boundaries so an optional freshness safeguard cannot silently end telemetry delivery. Define whether recovery preserves the active collection or transitions the client to an explicit failed state.

…r stream heads
A malformed OPENC3_STREAMING_MAX_LAG_SECONDS became 0 via to_f and silently
disabled skip-ahead; it now warns and uses the default. stream_heads picked
an empty item array left by remove, so topics on a nonzero shard were
queried on shard 0 and never skipped ahead.

check_lag can raise during the Redis stream-head query. The exception reaches the outer thread rescue, exits the loop, and completes the active realtime stream. Rescue this optional check so normal streaming continues.

Float(raw, exception: false) accepts -1 and returns it. check_lag then exits because @max_lag_seconds <= 0, which disables skip-ahead. NaN and Infinity already return nil and use the default value.
