fix(cmd-tlm-api): reap cable subscriptions whose disconnect never arrives - #3948
Replaces the per-channel @@broadcasters hashes with a shared ApplicationCable::BroadcasterRegistry and an ApplicationCable::BroadcasterChannel concern. The concern is used by StreamingChannel, MessagesChannel and the eight *EventsChannels, which removes the copy-pasted subscribed/unsubscribed code.
The frontend Cable (openc3-js-common) now sends a heartbeat perform every 60 s on each cmd-tlm-api subscription.
A lazily started background sweeper kills and removes any subscription that has heartbeated at least once and then gone silent for longer than OPENC3_CABLE_SUBSCRIPTION_TTL (default 300 s). The sweep runs every OPENC3_CABLE_SWEEP_INTERVAL (default 60 s).
If the server gets a heartbeat for a subscription it no longer has (for example, one that was reaped), it transmits {"__openc3_cable__": "resubscribe"}. The Cable wrapper catches that message itself (it never reaches the channel's received callback) and rebuilds the consumer. Components already re-add their items on connected.
A duplicate subscribe for the same key now kills the previous broadcaster instead of leaking it.
ApplicationCable::Channel gets a no-op heartbeat action, so channels that don't track liveness don't log it as an unknown action.
Why
Under AnyCable, unsubscribed arrives as a separate Disconnect RPC from anycable-go. If it is never delivered (anycable-go restarts or crashes, or the gRPC stream is torn down), the broadcaster stays in @@broadcasters forever. Its threads then keep reading Redis at full rate and broadcasting to a dead stream for the rest of the process.
Backward compatibility
Subscriptions are only reaped after they have sent a heartbeat. Older frontends and the Ruby/Python scripting WebSocketApi never heartbeat, and a realtime stream legitimately goes a long time with no client-to-server traffic, so those subscriptions keep today's behaviour. Heartbeats are on by default only for the default /openc3-api/cable URL, so script-runner-api cables and other backends are unaffected.
Testing
bundle exec rspec in openc3-cosmos-cmd-tlm-api: 775 examples, 0 failures. New tests cover the registry (reaping, TTL override, kill errors, legacy entries) and the channel lifecycle (register/unregister, duplicate subscribe, reap, resubscribe reply).
pnpm lint --max-warnings 0 in openc3-js-common: clean.
Not yet exercised against a live anycable-go deployment.
Live subscriptions now send periodic heartbeats by default when using the standard API connection, helping keep active streams available. Heartbeats can be configured for custom connections.
When a stream needs to reconnect, the client now handles resubscription automatically.
Bug Fixes
Improved cleanup and recovery for live event and data streams, including when subscriptions end or broadcasters expire.
Custom connection URLs do not enable heartbeats unless configured.
…ives
Channel broadcasters were tracked in per-class @@Broadcasters hashes pruned
only by unsubscribed. If anycable-go never delivered the Disconnect RPC, the
broadcaster and its Redis-reading threads lived for the rest of the process.
Track them in a shared registry, have the frontend Cable heartbeat each
subscription, and reap heartbeating subscriptions that go silent. Clients
that never heartbeat are left alone so existing script clients keep working.

- openc3-cosmos-cmd-tlm-api/app/channels/application_cable/channel.rb:25 - SonarQube rubydre:S1186 flagged the empty `heartbeat` method. I added a nested comment explaining why it is an intentional no-op (BroadcasterChannel overrides it), which should also bring new_code_smells_severity back under the gate.

When a second subscription to a channel arrives on the same connection, BroadcasterRegistry.register now kills the earlier broadcaster for the same <prefix>_<uuid> key. Before this change the old broadcaster leaked but kept running. Each frontend Cable builds its own consumer and connection, so this should be safe. A human should still confirm that no client opens two subscriptions to the same channel over one connection and expects both broadcasters to stay alive.

Turn 1: Claude (commit 8f37f3296)
This PR replaces the per-channel @@Broadcasters hashes with a shared BroadcasterChannel concern and a BroadcasterRegistry. The registry runs a heartbeat-based sweeper that reaps orphaned subscriptions, and the frontend Cable now sends a heartbeat to the cmd-tlm-api. The logic looks correct and has spec coverage. My only change fixes the SonarQube S1186 finding about an empty method.

Good catch. Below 60s, a healthy client could be reaped between heartbeats, then told to resubscribe on its next heartbeat, so every tab would churn about once a minute. Separately, a non-numeric or 0 value became 0.0 through to_f. That reaped every heartbeating subscription on each sweep, and OPENC3_CABLE_SWEEP_INTERVAL=0 turned the sweeper into a busy loop.

It looks like entry.heartbeat and is here because non-JS clients don't send heartbeats, but this means that an entry where a JS client immediately died after opening the connection will never be cleaned up (which I don't think is a terribly uncommon edge case tbh). There are ways to handle that, but doing so elegantly and robustly is a hard problem. I'll let @ryanmelt decide whether we care about this bug. Might be able to just initialize heartbeat to true for those connections.

Agreed, this is worth fixing. It also hits the main case this PR targets: when anycable-go restarts, any subscription opened in the last minute before the restart would never be reaped.
Fixed in 3c26160, along the lines you suggested. The server can't tell at subscribe time whether a client will heartbeat, so the client now says so. Cable adds heartbeat: true to the subscribe params, only on the cmd-tlm-api cable where heartbeats are on. BroadcasterChannel registers those subscriptions with heartbeat: true, so they can be reaped from the moment they subscribe. Older cached frontends and the Ruby/Python scripting APIs don't send the param, so they still never get reaped.
The same commit also makes unsubscribed remove only its own registration. It checks a per-subscription token kept in AnyCable channel state. Before this, a late unsubscribe from an earlier subscription on the same connection could kill the broadcaster of a resubscribe that shares its key.
… heartbeat
A ttl below the heartbeat interval reaped healthy clients, and a zero sweep
interval busy-looped. Clients now declare heartbeat support on subscribe so
ones that die early are reaped, and unsubscribe only removes its own
registration so a late unsubscribe can't kill a newer broadcaster.

The change adds a shared broadcaster registry and channel lifecycle, migrates event and streaming channels to that lifecycle, and adds client heartbeats with resubscribe handling. A protocol test now measures elapsed time from before connection through the write.

Summary
Registry and expiry openc3-cosmos-cmd-tlm-api/app/channels/application_cable/broadcaster_registry.rb, openc3-cosmos-cmd-tlm-api/spec/channels/broadcaster_registry_spec.rb
The registry stores broadcaster entries, supports token-checked removal, tracks heartbeat activity, and sweeps expired heartbeating entries. Specs cover registry behavior, environment settings, and cleanup errors.
Channels use the shared concern to create, register, and remove broadcasters. Heartbeats update registry activity and transmit a resubscribe message when an entry is missing.
Client heartbeat and recovery openc3-cosmos-init/plugins/packages/openc3-js-common/src/services/cable.js
The Cable client sends periodic heartbeats when enabled, stops heartbeat timers on unsubscribe or disconnect, and schedules recovery after a resubscribe response.
Reconnecting subscriptions can appear alive while silently stopping delivery of updates; fix teardown before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to fc29e
The change improves stale-subscription cleanup while preserving subscription authentication. Residual risk centers on recovery and cleanup under failed or out-of-order disconnects; those runtime behaviors have not been fully validated.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The heartbeat action targets the caller's connection-and-channel registry key, limiting direct mutation to that subscription scope. Broadcaster resource consumption nevertheless affects shared API process and Redis capacity. Because non-heartbeating clients remain exempt, expiry is not a universal resource-abuse control.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Recovery retains the existing authentication path: the client refreshes its token and sends it as a subscription parameter, while the server authenticates against the connection scope or accepts an already URL-authenticated connection. The heartbeat change does not remove this subscribe-time control.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Registry deletion precedes producer cleanup, and cleanup exceptions are logged without restoring ownership. Existing producer cancellation is cooperative: StreamingApi waits for a bounded interval, while TopicsThread stops through a cancellation flag. These producer implementations are unchanged, so removal from the registry should not be interpreted as proof of worker termination.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Validate replacement-stream ownership and producer termination through AnyCable-backed late-disconnect, expiry, and cleanup-failure scenarios before treating registry presence or absence as an end-to-end health signal.

The initial read delay is measured from connect, but the test started its
timer after connect returned, so the measured wait undercounted by connect's
own duration and failed on a slow runner (0.0196s < 0.02s).

unsubscribed calls stop_stream_from subscription_key before the token-checked unregister. On AnyCable-Go 1.6.20, a replacement on the same connection uses the same session, identifier, and broadcasting, so this call removes the replacement's stream entry. The replacement remains registered because its token differs, and its heartbeats continue to succeed while broadcasts are no longer delivered.
Suggested fix
- stop_stream_from subscription_key+ if BroadcasterRegistry.unregister(subscription_key, token: token)+ stop_stream_from subscription_key+ end
# Only remove our own registration. A resubscribe on the same connection
# shares the key, and if its subscribe is handled before this unsubscribe
# the newer broadcaster must survive.
- BroadcasterRegistry.unregister(subscription_key, token: token)
