Overview

Add normalized runtime.response_limits for response bytes, aggregate artifact bytes, file count and per-file bytes. The same configuration is enforced by the shared SDK core on the host and inside OpenShell; callers can retrieve complete large artifacts without changing harness settings.

This is the REQ13 child of #601. Its base is ak-openshell-configurable-limits; the deadline PR remains independently reviewable.

  • I confirm this contribution is my own work, or I have the right to submit it under this project's license.
  • I searched existing issues and open pull requests, and this does not duplicate existing work.

Details

  • Add strict typed Python/Rust config and generated schemas. Omitted fields retain defaults: 4 MiB response, 2 MiB aggregate artifacts, 16 files and 1 MiB per file. Values are inclusive positive 32-bit integers; budgets remain independent.
  • Count compact native RunResult JSON, rechecking convenience runs after stop events/errors are added, and unique declared artifact files by uncompressed size. SDK diagnostics are excluded from artifact budgets. Limit breaches return explicit failed results with the limit, configured/observed values and offending asset; rejected output/manifest are replaced by a bounded diagnostic, without a partial successful result.
  • Scale task bridge, provider framing and compressed artifact transfer allowances with configured budgets. Retain artifact path isolation, symlink/special-file rejection and file-change checks. Remove the separate compressed-file cap that rejected otherwise permitted binary screenshots.
  • Document counting, retrieving large screenshots and error handling. Add reusable unit/E2E coverage and a test checklist. Generated API ordering updates are mechanical; no run evidence is committed.

CodeRabbit follow-up: finalized-result checks are shared by Rust and Python; collection-time breaches preserve all four diagnostic fields; sandbox diagnostics use host budgets and bounded declared paths; standalone bridge defaults align; malformed runtime IDs retain error envelopes; the launcher requires its report path. All nine code findings (six original and three follow-ups) are addressed and resolved. The exemption matches the complete canonical SDK diagnostic, transport-budget arithmetic saturates safely, and profile-path compatibility is preserved. The SDK guide also documents buffered-transfer memory overhead and the separate collection deadline.

Behavior change to review: local invocations now honor the same default budgets as OpenShell. Consumers returning larger local results must raise their limits. Rust RuntimeConfig struct initializers need the additive response_limits field; generated scaffolds are updated. The southbound adapter contract is unchanged because enforcement belongs to the SDK.

Validation

  • just test-rust: 335 tests passed; cargo fmt --all -- --check.
  • cargo check -p fabric-python --locked and rebuilt native extension.
  • just test-typescript.
  • just --set no_uv true docs: zero errors, 12 existing generated-reference warnings.
  • Focused config, response/reader boundaries and bridge tests; provider health recheck: 7 passed.
  • Live code-review example using the local OpenAI-compatible LLM: Hermes + Deep Agents, host + OpenShell, accepting + rejecting budgets: all 8 cells passed, including cleanup.
  • Rebuilt from the committed source: all 30 controlled host/OpenShell cases passed, including exact artifact boundaries, a 5 MiB response, raised file/aggregate/count budgets, complete binary hashes and cleanup.
  • Final just --set no_uv true test-python: 3,180 passed, 151 skipped. Harbor script tests separately passed 118 cases in a clean temporary checkout because the working checkout contains a pre-existing generated vendor tree.
  • GitHub-required NVSkills service validation was requested again on final head b4f6cef13a3747919615db260106dabc964834b0. The dispatch workflow succeeded; the central NVSkills CI status has not yet appeared. This is the only remaining unresolved CodeRabbit thread.
  • After restacking on the qualified parent: all 30 controlled cases and eight live inference cells passed again. The combined parent-gate/child-response focused tests passed 48 cases.
  • Repository pre-commit hooks and git diff --check.

Run logs and inference reports remain local under temporary paths. The reusable checklist is tests/e2e/response-limits-checklist.md.

Where should the reviewer start?

  1. crates/fabric-core/src/config.rs and sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/models.py: schema, defaults and validation.
  2. crates/fabric-core/src/runtime/response_limits.rs: byte accounting, independent artifact budgets and explicit failure behavior. Review the diagnostic exemption and SDK-artifact exclusions.
  3. crates/fabric-core/src/environment.rs, environment-providers/openshell/src/lib.rs and read_artifacts.py: transport scaling and complete artifact collection.
  4. tests/e2e/test_response_limits.py and test_code_review_response_limits.py: controlled boundaries/large binary transfers and the two-harness inference matrix.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added configurable response and artifact budgets for host and OpenShell runs. Defaults are 4 MiB per result, 2 MiB total for artifacts, 16 artifact files, and 1 MiB per file.
    • Results that exceed a budget now fail with a diagnostic instead of returning partial or truncated output. Limits can be customized in runtime configuration.
  • Documentation
    • Updated SDK guides, configuration references, and examples with limit settings, defaults, and failure behavior.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for budget boundaries, configuration validation, and host and OpenShell execution.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The change adds optional SDK-owned response and artifact limits, enforces them on runtime results and artifact collection, and configures transport budgets in host and OpenShell paths. It also updates schemas, SDK references, usage guidance, and tests.

Changes

Response and artifact limits

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configuration and public contract
crates/fabric-core/src/config.rs, sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/models.py, schemas/sdk/*, crates/fabric-cli/..., docs/reference/api/*
Adds ResponseLimits with defaults of 4 MiB per serialized response, 2 MiB total artifact bytes, 16 unique artifact paths, and 1 MiB per artifact file. Runtime configuration accepts optional limits, rejects invalid values, and exposes the model through SDK schemas and references.
SDK result enforcement and provider wiring
crates/fabric-core/src/runtime/*, crates/fabric-core/src/environment.rs
Enforces response and local artifact budgets on applicable runtime results. Provider operations use limits derived from the response or artifact configuration. Rejected results carry response_limit_exceeded diagnostics and no response output or artifact manifest.
OpenShell and runtime transport limits
environment-providers/openshell/src/*, sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/runtime_server/*
Passes configured limits to OpenShell runtime commands and artifact collection. The artifact reader checks configured file-count and uncompressed-byte budgets, and the Python runtime server accepts a configurable response-size limit.
Lifecycle finalization and validation
crates/fabric-python/src/lib.rs, sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/runtime.py, tests/python/*, tests/e2e/*
Adds native result finalization after shutdown changes a result. Tests cover boundary values, diagnostics, artifact transport, and host/OpenShell execution.
Configuration and contributor guidance
README.md, docs/sdk/python.mdx, schemas/SCHEMA.md, skills/*, tests/e2e/response-limits-checklist.md
Documents limit defaults, counting rules, failure behavior, SDK ownership, and configuration use.

121-121: Trivial · Performance & Scalability

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Document or bound the practical size ceiling of the JSON transfer.

Each compressed byte becomes a Python int in a list (about 8 bytes of list overhead per byte). It then becomes a JSON integer of up to 4 characters. Raised limits are accepted up to 2³²−1, but the host exec timeout stays at 30 seconds in collect_artifacts. In the sandbox, tens of MiB of artifacts can run out of memory or hit that timeout. The failure surfaces as gateway_timeout or a generic artifact_read_failed, with no hint about the budget.

Document a practical ceiling. Alternatively, scale the exec timeout with max_artifact_bytes. Longer term, a base64 or binary framing avoids the amplification.

Obtain the required NVSkills CI status.

The required check reports no successful NVSkills CI status at or after evidence commit 117f6de8c1052b822572f364663ca34335efcdda. After the final skill change, request /nvskills-ci again and confirm that the required status succeeds. The current missing status blocks the validation workflow.

The authorized /nvskills-ci command was re-posted after the final restack on b4f6cef. The earlier dispatch workflow completed successfully, but no central NVSkills CI status was published for that old head before it changed. The SDK-enforcement skill statement is unchanged. Leaving this thread open pending the service result rather than claiming validation success.

@AnuradhaKaruppiah Agreed. Dispatch workflow success does not establish NVSkills CI validation success. This thread should remain open until the service publishes a successful status for the final PR head. No change to the SDK-enforcement statement is needed for this finding.

## Default Guidance

- Keep `runtime.response_limits` SDK-owned across host/task execution. Preserve inclusive byte/file budgets, explicit limit diagnostics, and transport allowances derived from configured budgets. Recheck convenience-run responses after cleanup adds stop events or errors, and preserve structured collection-time limit failures. Do not add adapter capability requirements or independent compressed-file ceilings. Use `tests/e2e/response-limits-checklist.md` when changing these paths.

Preserve valid long and newline-containing artifact paths.

Replace the broad control-character and length checks with a NUL check. Keep the existing path, limit-name, asset-membership, configured-limit, and observed-size validation. This restores successful collection and structured per-file or aggregate limit failures without admitting NUL paths.

Suggested fix

-        || error.asset.chars().any(char::is_control)
-        || error.asset.len() > 4096
