feat: add runtime status lookup to the SDK and CLI - #608
Add Fabric.runtime_status() and fabric-agent-ctl status so callers with an agent name and runtime ID can read the recorded state and retrieve a handle. The CLI calls the SDK.
Details
For example, look up a runtime started through the same Fabric client:
fabric-agent-ctl status --agent researcher --runtime-id RUNTIME_ID
What is recorded
Result
Active or failed runtime
The recorded state and current handle
Stopped runtime
status: stopped and handle: null
Missing runtime or wrong agent
A fixed error, with no runtime changes
Handles exclude environment variables, provider connection details, and provider metadata. Status reads can run during an invocation. Use the returned handle for inspection and the original Runtime for invocation and cleanup.
Local reads use the original Fabric instance. For OpenShell, a later client can query the original server by supplying environment=environment. Records do not survive server restart.
Status reports recorded state. Use Fabric.check() for a fresh health check.
Python: 3,362 passed, 146 skipped, and one mock-fixture failure in the full run. After correcting the fixture, 169 affected tests passed. The full suite was not repeated afterward.
Security recheck: 54 focused tests passed; no introduced credential leaks or unsafe logging found.
Local validation ran on macOS. A live OpenShell gateway was not tested.
Where should the reviewer start?
Start with Fabric.runtime_status() in sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/client.py, then the SDK-to-server tests in tests/python/test_sdk_server_checks.py.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added Fabric.runtime_status() to retrieve recorded runtime state and a sanitized handle snapshot without starting, stopping, invoking, or probing a runtime.
Added status lookup through the runtime server, including for runtimes created by an earlier client process while the server remains available.
Added RuntimeStatusReport, with lifecycle status and optional server state. Stopped runtimes remain discoverable without a handle.
Bug Fixes
Limited each client to 128 runtime records. New starts evict stopped records first and are rejected when the limit is filled by active, failed, or pending runtimes.
Prevented duplicate runtime IDs from replacing existing ownership records. Status reports exclude environment variables and provider metadata, and invalid or mismatched responses are rejected.
The Python SDK now reports recorded runtime state and sanitized handle snapshots. OpenShell and the runtime server provide read-only status commands. Stopped records retain null handles, and each client enforces a 128-record limit.

Summary
SDK reports and runtime records sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/types.py, sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/client.py, sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/runtime.py, tests/python/test_runtime.py
The SDK adds RuntimeStatusReport, local and OpenShell lookup, sanitized handles, stopped-record retention, capacity reservations, and runtime ID conflict handling.
OpenShell status transport crates/fabric-core/src/*, crates/fabric-python/src/lib.rs, environment-providers/openshell/src/*, tests/python/test_sdk_server_checks.py
The core and provider add a status command with strict JSON validation, response identity checks, and no lifecycle effects.
Runtime-server status command sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/runtime_server/*, tests/python/runtime_server/*, sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/runtime_server/README.md
The runtime server accepts status requests, verifies ownership, delegates to the SDK, returns server state, and validates status responses.
Status schema and guidance crates/fabric-core/src/schema.rs, schemas/sdk/runtime-status-report.schema.json, docs/*, README.md, skills/*, .agents/skills/*, tests/conftest.py
The schema catalog and documentation describe the report fields, sanitized handle, record limits, and distinction between recorded state and health checks.

Add Fabric.runtime_status() to the API Inventory table.
The new "Recorded Runtime Status" section documents a new public async SDK entry point. The "API Inventory" table later on the same page lists every Fabric and Runtime entry point, but it does not list runtime_status. A reader who uses only the inventory will not find the operation. The path instructions require "technical accuracy against the current API".
📝 Proposed inventory row (place after the `Fabric.start_runtime(...)` row)
+| `Fabric.runtime_status(runtime_id=..., agent_name=..., environment=...)` | Yes | You need the recorded lifecycle state and a safe discovery handle for a known runtime ID. | Never starts, invokes, stops, or probes. Use `Fabric.check()` for fresh health. |

## Default Guidance
- Runtime discovery uses the typed public `Fabric.runtime_status()` operation. Keep `fabric-agent-ctl status` delegated to that SDK operation and OpenShell status routed through the existing provider command transport. Preserve recorded lifecycle state separately from health observations, use null handles for stopped records, and exclude environment variables and arbitrary provider metadata from discovery snapshots.

The fixed-ID duplicate-start case is already updated in tests/python/test_streaming.py. The other inspected multi-start tests either use distinct IDs, real native runtime creation, or intentionally test the new conflict behavior. No additional accidental test failure is established.

fabric-agent-ctl status returns a new JSON payload that consumers in other languages will parse. CheckReport and RuntimeHandle both have schemas under schemas/sdk/, but this one has none. The type exists only in Python; Rust passes raw JSON through the hidden runtime_status_environment (runtime.rs:52).
I'll suggest adding runtime-status-report.schema.json and a line in schemas/SCHEMA.md (or explain why this is Python-only in the PR description)

Fabric now keeps a strong reference to every started Runtime until it stops successfully. Only stopped records have the 128 cap. A FAILED runtime whose stop() also fails stays in _runtimes for the life of the client. It’s documented, but long-lived callers that start many runtimes will see this grow. Is that intended? Or should failed runtimes have a cap too?

# Contribute A New API Surface
## Default Guidance
- Runtime discovery uses the typed public `Fabric.runtime_status()` operation and `sdk/runtime-status-report` schema. Each client caps all runtime records, including pending starts, at 128; evict only stopped records and reject full-capacity starts with `runtime_limit_reached` before runtime effects.

Overview
Add
Fabric.runtime_status()andfabric-agent-ctl statusso callers with an agent name and runtime ID can read the recorded state and retrieve a handle. The CLI calls the SDK.Details

Where should the reviewer start?
Start with
Fabric.runtime_status()insdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/client.py, then the SDK-to-server tests intests/python/test_sdk_server_checks.py.Related Issues: (use one of the action keywords Closes / Fixes / Resolves / Relates to)
Relates to fabric-agent-ctl: read-only status command for the owned runtime #420. Native interface discovery in [Enhancement]: Interfaces: generalize discovery and shared adapter code from the P0 adapters #565 remains separate.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Fabric.runtime_status()to retrieve recorded runtime state and a sanitized handle snapshot without starting, stopping, invoking, or probing a runtime.RuntimeStatusReport, with lifecycle status and optional server state. Stopped runtimes remain discoverable without a handle.
