feat: open Deep Agents Code's terminal UI from a runtime - #575
With harness.settings.interfaces.terminal, the Deep Agents Code adapter writes a launcher, <artifact root>/.fabric/deepagents-code/runtimes/<runtime-id>/interfaces/terminal, that opens dcode's terminal UI on the runtime's home and settings, plus a terminal.running marker naming the runtime's ACP thread. The launcher refuses to run without the marker, so it only works while the runtime runs. A person runs it with a TTY inside the sandbox, for example through openshell sandbox exec --tty.
The terminal branch of adapters/typescript/deepagents-code/src/deepagents-code-acp.ts, then the interfaces schema in the descriptor.
Testing: the terminal end-to-end test runs the launcher and checks its exported settings, and a failed start leaves no marker; they failed before the change. The package's tests (11 pass) and the schema plan test pass. Manually, the launcher's threads list showed the runtime's thread and the terminal UI answered with a real model: NVIDIA/NemoClaw#14054.
I confirm this contribution is my own work, or I have the right to submit it under this project's license.
I searched existing issues and open pull requests, and this does not duplicate existing work.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added support for running LangChain Deep Agents Code as an agent.
Configure an OpenAI model or compatible endpoint, choose a required approval mode, and optionally enable the terminal interface. In auto mode, actions escalated by the classifier are denied; yolo permits gated actions.
Health checks report whether the agent process is running, including while it is busy.
Documentation
Added setup instructions and requirements, including Node.js, dcode on PATH, and a separate Python environment, along with configuration guidance for approval behavior and terminal access.
Add nvidia.fabric.langchain.deepagents-code, a TypeScript process adapter
that runs LangChain's Deep Agents Code (dcode) as an ACP agent through the
shared startAcpSession runner: one `dcode --acp` process and one ACP session
per runtime, reused across ordered invocations. NemoClaw runs Deep Agents
Code through Fabric with this adapter.
- approval_mode (required) is auto, which runs dcode --auto-approve and
denies what its classifier escalates, or yolo, which allows every gated
action. No person can answer an approval during an invocation.
- The model is an openai model with an optional OpenAI-compatible base_url.
Each runtime gets its own DEEPAGENTS_HOME with a config.toml that names the
key variable but never holds the key.
- dcode inherits only a fixed set of process variables, runs with
--no-tracing, and has its update checks, automatic updates, price and
plugin refreshes, and reading of a workspace .env turned off.
- live, active and ready checks observe the ACP process.
runtime.ts and deepagents-code-acp.ts deliberately follow Kiro's runtime and
session structure almost line for line; reviewers can diff them against
adapters/typescript/kiro/src/runtime.ts and kiro-acp.ts.
The package joins the npm workspace, package-lock, check-package and the
adapter catalog. set_typescript_project_version.py now stamps it too: the
release workflow runs npm ci after stamping, and a member left at the old
version pins makes npm ci fail. The Harbor qualification plan lists it as
blocked until dcode is installed. The README is the adapter guide; the docs
page covers install and configuration and links to it.
Left out on purpose:
- interfaces.terminal, which follows in its own change.
- dcode_command: the adapter runs dcode from PATH.
- startup_timeout_seconds: the ACP session gets a fixed 60 s.
- Adapter-side checks of settings the descriptor schema already enforces;
Fabric validates harness.settings before start, and a Python test covers
the rejections.
- The ACP runner's fallback for denied process-group signals, which is a
separate fix.
- Publication in publish_typescript.yml, the consumer install check and
per-adapter justfile recipes; the npm package must be bootstrapped first.

Add harness.settings.interfaces.terminal to the Deep Agents Code adapter.
When it is present and enabled isn't false, the adapter writes a /bin/sh
launcher to <artifact root>/.fabric/deepagents-code/runtimes/<runtime-id>/
interfaces/terminal. The launcher opens dcode's terminal UI in a separate
session with the runtime's DEEPAGENTS_HOME, quiet switches and workspace,
and holds no secrets. NemoClaw configures interfaces.terminal: {} and
offers the launcher to people through openshell sandbox exec.
The adapter writes interfaces/terminal.running with the ACP session ID once
the session starts, stops dcode if that write fails, and removes the marker
in stop. The launcher refuses to run without the marker, so it only opens
while the runtime runs. The launcher needs dcode's absolute path, so the
adapter resolves dcode on the runtime's PATH when the terminal is on.
The descriptor schema accepts only interfaces.terminal.enabled; Fabric
enforces it, and a Python test covers the rejections. The terminal
end-to-end test runs the launcher while the runtime runs and after it
stops, and checks the switches it exports.
Left out on purpose: a dcode_command setting, a separate launcher unit
test, and a descriptor snapshot test.

The PR adds a TypeScript adapter that runs LangChain Deep Agents Code through ACP. It adds model and approval configuration, manages a dcode session and optional terminal launcher, and integrates the adapter into the catalog, package tooling, tests, and documentation.

Summary
Adapter contract and configuration adapters/typescript/deepagents-code/deepagents-code.fabric-adapter.json, sdk/python/.../catalog.json, adapters/typescript/deepagents-code/src/configuration.ts, adapters/typescript/deepagents-code/test/configuration.test.mjs, tests/adapters/test_deepagents_code_adapter.py
The descriptor and catalog define the process, OpenAI model, approval settings, result metadata, and health checks. Configuration helpers validate settings and models, resolve runtime paths and dcode, and generate model configuration and the terminal launcher. Tests cover accepted and rejected configuration.
ACP session and runtime lifecycle adapters/typescript/deepagents-code/src/deepagents-code-acp.ts, adapters/typescript/deepagents-code/src/runtime.ts, adapters/typescript/deepagents-code/test/*
The adapter starts and stops an ACP session, maps prompts and health checks to runtime results, and supports the optional terminal launcher. Failed stops retain the session for retry. Tests cover approval modes, repeated invocations, launcher lifecycle, startup errors, and stop retries.
The workspace, package checks, version updater, and qualification planning include the adapter. The adapter package adds its metadata and license. Tests cover package versioning and catalog adapter counts.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title uses the allowed type "feat", lowercase, a concise imperative summary, no trailing period, and 56 characters. It matches the main change: the adapter writes a launcher that opens dcode's terminal UI from a runtime when the terminal interface is enabled. The title does not mention the stacked dependency on #571, which is not required.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has the Overview, a reviewer start point (the terminal branch in deepagents-code-acp.ts and the interfaces schema in the descriptor), and Related Issues with Closes #546 and Part of #577. Both checkboxes are checked. It also gives testing results and a breaking-changes statement. The Related Issues heading uses a non-template line without the required action keyword in its title, but the entries use the keywords. The description covers the required sections.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files map to #546 or to its adapter delivery. Adapter source, descriptor, and catalog entries implement the adapter. The stop-retry changes in runtime.ts and the related tests implement the #546 stop/reap and lifecycle requirement. Package, CI, and version-script changes (set_typescript_project_version.py, check-package.mjs, package.json, workspace files) package the new adapter. The harbor qualification prerequisite and the 18-to-19 adapter count updates register the new adapter. Documentation and LICENSE cover the adapter. No unrelated change is demonstrated by the supplied summaries. adapters/typescript/package-lock.json is excluded by ignored_files. This assessment does not depend on its contents.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#546] Implementation evidence exists for the new adapter, one ACP process per runtime, ordered invocations, stop/reap, QUIET_ENVIRONMENT, the approval_mode rule (auto or yolo, manual rejected), the terminal launcher with marker gating and no secrets, the terminal descriptor entry, tests, and documentation.
Unmet requirement 1: health checks. #546 requires check() at live, active, and ready. The descriptor declares only live. The README states that active and ready are unsupported. The runtime check path reports live only. The previous FAIL still applies at head ae8faf6. The changes since the previous review do not add active or ready.
Unmet requirement 2: settings. #546 requires dcode_command and a bounded startup_timeout_seconds setting. The supplied summaries show command resolution as a PATH search for dcode only. They show the ACP start with a fixed 60-second timeout. Neither dcode_command nor startup_timeout_seconds appears in the descriptor or catalog settings summaries.
Basis: the supplied PR summaries and descriptor summary. No source read was performed for this assessment. The second item depends on those summaries being complete.
Resolution
Add active and ready check support to the runtime and session handle. Declare them in the descriptor and the catalog. Update the README to match. Add automated tests for live, active, and ready. If the issue requirement has changed, update #546 and the adapter contract instead.
Add a dcode_command setting (default dcode) and a bounded startup_timeout_seconds setting to the descriptor, the catalog entry, and selectSettings. Use these values in command resolution and in the ACP start path in place of the fixed 60-second timeout. Add tests for the command override and for timeout bounds. If these settings already exist in the source, cite the file and lines so this item can be closed.

Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 3 files.

### Catalog Bundle Maintenance
Run `just adapter-catalog`, `just check-adapter-catalog`, and `uv build --wheel --sdist --out-dir dist sdk/python/nemo-fabric-adapter-catalog` when maintaining the bundle. `just set-version` refreshes it after stamping Python and TypeScript versions. Python tests and wheel builds reject stale bundles; wheels and source distributions must build independently of the adapter source tree. Keep these maintainer details out of the PyPI-facing package README.
The adapter can observe only that the ACP process is running, so active and ready now report unsupported instead of passing without evidence, as Kiro's and Strands's adapters do.

Keep the session handle until session.stop() succeeds.
DeepAgentsCodeAdapterRuntime.stop clears this.session before session.stop() settles. If the ACP stop rejects, for example with EPERM during the process-group SIGTERM, the runtime has no handle. A later runtime.stop() returns without retrying cleanup, and the ACP child can remain alive. The common ACP contract expects a later stop() to retry the termination.
The correction boundary is DeepAgentsCodeAdapterRuntime.stop. Clear the handle only after the stop succeeds:

A failed ACP stop (for example a denied process-group signal) cleared the
runtime's session handle, so a later stop() could not retry and the dcode
child could stay alive. Keep the handle until session.stop() settles, reject
invocations while stopping, and route prompt-failure cleanup through stop()
so a failed cleanup there is retried too.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff finding about DeepAgentsCodeAdapterRuntime.stop clearing the session first (runtime.ts:124-129): that code comes from #571, so the fix landed there in bb4942e and is merged here. stop() now keeps the session handle until session.stop() resolves, so a later stop() can retry a rejected ACP stop (for example EPERM on the group signal). Invocations are refused while stopping, and cleanup after a failed prompt now goes through stop(), so a failure there is retried too. New tests are in adapters/typescript/deepagents-code/test/runtime.test.mjs.

Track a stop request that arrives during start().
stop() returns at runtime.ts:126 when no session exists. It does not record that a stop was requested. If stop() runs while factory.create(input) is pending, the later assignment at runtime.ts:44 leaves a live session without an owner.
The served lifecycle host awaits each request before it reads the next one. A stop request cannot run until start has settled. This path is reachable only when a caller invokes the exported class directly.

lines 44 - 45:
Update the start flow around `factory.create(input)` to handle a stop request
that arrives while session creation is pending. Establish a cancellation check
using the runtime’s existing lifecycle state before assigning the created
session; if start was cancelled, stop the newly created session and report
cancellation through the established lifecycle error mechanism. Preserve normal
session assignment and generation updates when no stop request occurred.

Overview
With
harness.settings.interfaces.terminal, the Deep Agents Code adapter writes a launcher,<artifact root>/.fabric/deepagents-code/runtimes/<runtime-id>/interfaces/terminal, that opensdcode's terminal UI on the runtime's home and settings, plus aterminal.runningmarker naming the runtime's ACP thread. The launcher refuses to run without the marker, so it only works while the runtime runs. A person runs it with a TTY inside the sandbox, for example throughopenshell sandbox exec --tty.Stacked on #571. Review the commits after #571's.
Where should the reviewer start?
The terminal branch of
adapters/typescript/deepagents-code/src/deepagents-code-acp.ts, then theinterfacesschema in the descriptor.Testing: the terminal end-to-end test runs the launcher and checks its exported settings, and a failed start leaves no marker; they failed before the change. The package's tests (11 pass) and the schema plan test pass. Manually, the launcher's
threads listshowed the runtime's thread and the terminal UI answered with a real model: NVIDIA/NemoClaw#14054.Breaking changes: none.
