What this changes

Adds Help ▸ Report an Issue… (help.report_issue; also in the command palette and, through craft-menu, the macOS menu bar), placed after "Join the ArtCraft Discord". It opens GitHub's new-issue page with the bug report form from #5 filled in through its field ids:

https://github.com/storytold/pdfcraft/issues/new?template=bug_report.yml&version=…&os=…&system-info=…&document-info=…

  • version: PdfCraft <version> (with the build label, if any); os: <OS> <arch> (Web in the browser build, no OS version).
  • system-info: Build, Graphics (adapter, backend and device type; OpenGL (glow) or WebGL (glow, web) on those paths; unknown if the host didn't say), Interface language (the language code), Display scale.
  • document-info: Document type: pdf when a document is open, else none. Never a file name, path, page text or any count derived from content.
  • Each value is capped at 80 bytes and the system block at 400, cut on a character boundary, and percent-encoded with a local 10-line encoder (unreserved characters only). The address stays under 2 KiB; a test checks it with hostile and very long input.

Nothing is sent. PdfCraft only opens an address; the user reads the form and submits it on GitHub. That is the preview-and-confirm part of storytold#1619 (automatic sending is not part of this and stays open there).

If no browser opens, a dialog ("Couldn't open your web browser") keeps the address and the details in read-only fields with accessible names, with Copy Details and Close (Escape closes). Copy Details copies the details, a blank line and the issue address. The dialog stays until closed, and the error is shown in it.

Failure detection. egui's open_url can't report failure, so the app has an optional host opener (PdfCraftApp::url_opener, wired in production, not only in tests): the desktop app uses webbrowser::open, the web build uses window.open (a blocked pop-up returns nothing) and clears opener afterwards. Without an opener it falls back to egui. Other links are unchanged.

New direct dependency, for you to decide: webbrowser = "1" in apps/pdfcraft. It is already in the tree through eframe (same locked version 1.2.4; Cargo.lock only gains the edge from pdfcraft). The alternative that avoids it is to always show the details in a dismissible notice after opening, and drop failure detection. Say if you'd rather have that.

Strings. Four new strings are in all 34 catalogs, with the ellipsis character: Report an Issue… (18 locales reuse craft-i18n common.tsv; the other 16 are written from the plain meaning), Couldn't open your web browser (es, ja and zh-hans from FilmCraft's merged catalogs, the rest written from the meaning), Copy Details and Address (composed from the existing Copy, Details and address words). Close and Details are reused. I'm not a native speaker of most of these: corrections are welcome. I did not add the "Opens in your web browser: {url}" menu hover or a tooltip, because craft-menu items have no hover text here.

Not in this PR: no title-bar button (the PhotoCraft maintainers ruled against one), no parity count change (revision-history row only in docs/ui-parity.md, plus a ROADMAP.md progress line), no key tip or shortcut. The icon is Lucide message-square-warning (ISC, same release as the others, ATTRIBUTION.toml + regenerated ATTRIBUTION.md, icon count test 190 → 191).

Format shared with PhotoCraft's storytold#1312 (same field ids and caps); GridCraft and DeckCraft are adding the same item. A shared craft-diagnostics crate (craft-libs storytold#115) could take report_issue.rs later.

How you verified it

  • cargo fmt --check: clean. cargo clippy -p pdfcraft-ui-egui -p pdfcraft-engine -p pdfcraft --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean (after fixing one lint in my test).
  • cargo test -p pdfcraft-engine: 370 + 16 passed. cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui: lib 584 tests and the it suite 1188 tests. Failures seen on this Linux machine, neither in code I touched: signing::the_signature_labels_follow_the_interface_language panics on a missing CJK glyph because CRAFT_FONTS_DIR isn't set here (I did not run it on main), and canvas::tests::real_shell_pages_…thumbnail_consumers failed once under load and passes alone.
  • New tests: unit tests for the builder (exactly five parameters with & = ? # % newline and CJK injected into every value, caps with a 10,000-character adapter name, character-boundary cuts, field order); integration tests in tests/it/links.rs (one address opened once through the host opener, falls back to egui without one, a document named Secret Budget.pdf at /home/ann/… leaves none of those words in the address, a failing opener shows the dialog with the error, Copy Details puts the details and address on the clipboard, Close and Escape close it); a Help-menu order test. The existing every-command-is-implemented, icon, menu and catalog-shape tests pass.
  • cargo xtask layers: ok. cargo xtask assets: ok after --write. cargo check -p pdfcraft-web --target wasm32-unknown-unknown: builds.
  • I did not run a test against a pre-fix build for the privacy and cap tests (they pin new code, there is no earlier behaviour); the dialog tests failed first on real mistakes in my tests and were fixed.
  • Windows: see the comment below once finished.
  • Linux GUI (WSLg): see the comment below once finished.
  • Not run: macOS (the native menu picks the item up from the shared HELP list; not exercised), the web build in a browser (compiled for wasm32 only, so the pop-up-blocked path is untested), and a real prefilled form on GitHub (needs chore(github): add a bug report issue form #5 on main first).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a Help menu option to report an issue, opening a GitHub form prefilled with the app version, operating system, and open document’s file type. The report does not include the document’s name, path, or contents.
    • Added a guided bug-report form with fields for reproduction steps and expected and actual behavior.
  • Support
    • Added a link to the ArtCraft Discord for questions and community discussion.

The form uses the field ids PhotoCraft's prefilled report uses (version, os,
system-info, document-info), so a Report an Issue item can fill it in and one
maintainer can read reports from any Craft app. Related to storytold#1619.
Opens GitHub's new-issue page with the version, OS, graphics adapter,
interface language and the open document's type (never its name or contents)
filled in through the bug report form's field ids. The user reads and submits
the form; nothing is sent. When no browser opens, a dialog keeps the address
and the details with Copy Details. The desktop app opens the address through
webbrowser and the web build through window.open, so each can say whether it
worked. Strings are in every catalog. Related to storytold#1619.

Walkthrough

The change adds a Help issue-report command and URL builder, sets workspace lint rules, and reorganizes code and tests across PDF processing, signing, forms, and UI modules. The annotation API also adds parameter structures for style changes and text replacements.

Changes: Issue-report command and URL

Layer / File(s) Summary
Issue-report URL and command entry
crates/engine/src/commands.rs, crates/engine/src/links.rs, crates/engine/src/links/tests.rs, ROADMAP.md, .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/*
The Help registry adds help.report_issue. The URL builder encodes bounded version, OS, and document-extension values. The roadmap and issue templates describe the report fields and guidance.

Workspace linting and refactoring

Layer / File(s) Summary
Lint policy and import scope
Cargo.toml, clippy.toml, CLAUDE.md, xtask/Cargo.toml, apps/*, crates/*
Workspace Clippy rules now deny cognitive complexity, excessive arguments, and wildcard imports. Many modules replace wildcard imports with explicit imports. xtask inherits workspace lints.
Grouped function inputs
crates/annot/*, crates/sign/*, crates/ui-egui/*, crates/engine/src/open.rs, crates/forms/src/actions.rs, xtask/src/demo_pdf/form.rs
New structures group existing function inputs. The annotation API adds StyleChange and TextReplacement; related callers and tests use those types.
PDF and document-processing helpers
crates/annot/src/*, crates/edit/src/*, crates/forms/src/*, crates/preflight/src/lib.rs, crates/print/src/sheets.rs, crates/redact/src/*, crates/sign/src/pdf/*, crates/xfa/src/pdf.rs
Existing logic is split into helpers for annotation drawing, text interpretation and rewriting, form updates, preflight checks, label layout, redaction, signature-change classification, and XFA widget generation.
UI dispatch and interaction helpers
crates/ui-egui/src/*
Command routing, dialogs, canvas rendering, tool input, preference restoration, and combine/export workflows are divided into helpers and context structures.
Test updates
crates/automation/tests/it/automation.rs, crates/edit/src/tests.rs, crates/forms/src/tests.rs, crates/js/src/tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/*, crates/xfa/src/tests.rs
Tests are reorganized into focused helpers. Added coverage includes page-background cases, accessibility figure tags, and hostile FormCalc inputs.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~90 minutes

Possibly related PRs

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to b28e1

Issue reports lose intended diagnostics, and the change retains signature-validation and build-identification correctness risks that should be fixed before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to b28e1

The reporting flow limits automatically included information, and the inspected editing paths retain permission and rollback controls. No new material security flaw was verified. External form behavior and parts of the wider refactor remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new browser-navigation boundary can disclose the encoded build, platform and document-presence values to the browser and GitHub before an issue is submitted. The inspected UI caller does not supply filenames, paths, page text or content-derived counts, and those values cannot select a different destination through the encoded query.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The inspected signature classifier preserves the base revision's treatment of signed-resource containers that retain previous entries: they can fall through to ordinary dictionary classification and a disallowed verdict. This conservative behavior predates the PR and is not retained as an introduced security concern.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Session.apply resolves the target document, rejects unavailable editing authority, checks PDF permissions when present, and runs the edit against a cloned document. The inspected grouped-input refactor preserves these controls rather than granting its callers new mutation authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The lower-level replacement helper can leave an intermediate strikeout if later caret creation or linking fails. The same sequence exists in the base revision; the inspected session caller contains edit failures through working-copy execution. Equivalent containment for unknown external direct callers was not established.

Platform results, run on the head of this branch:

  • Windows (GNU toolchain, real Windows): cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --test it links passed, 45 of 45, including the new Report an Issue tests. The rest of the suite was not run on Windows.
  • Linux (WSLg, not GNOME or KDE, so desktop behaviour is not representative): I built the app and ran it with the control channel. help.report_issue found no browser (No valid browsers detected), and the "Couldn't open your web browser" dialog appeared with the error, the address and the details (Version: PdfCraft 0.14.0, OS: Linux x86_64, Build: debug, Graphics: llvmpipe … (Vulkan, Cpu), Interface language: en, Display scale: 1.00, Document type: none). I read the screenshot; I did not click Copy Details there (the clipboard behaviour is covered by the integration test).
  • Not run: macOS, a browser run of the web build, and a successful browser open on a real desktop (this machine has no browser for the desktop app to find).

CodeRabbit's finding is right that the form is not on this branch's base: it is added by #5. I merged that branch into this one so the form (and its ids) are present here too; once #5 lands the merge is a no-op, and #5 should merge first so the prefill works on main.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Retain the prefilled report URL in FailedLink.

When the configured opener or ctx.open_url fails, this branch replaces facts.url() with NEW_ISSUE. The fallback dialog and Copy Details then omit the prefilled form fields. Store the existing local url instead.

Suggested fix
- self.failed_link = Some(FailedLink { url: pdfcraft_engine::links::NEW_ISSUE.to_owned(), details: facts.details(), error });
+ self.failed_link = Some(FailedLink { url, details: facts.details(), error });

crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:3739-3744
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Synchronize the native menu before processing native clicks.

logic processes native clicks before it updates the macOS menu. If app state changes after the previous synchronization, a stale item can remain enabled. Clicking it then reaches run_menu_command, which rejects it because the current command is disabled. The user sees an enabled item, but the command does not run.

Run sync_native_menu before native_menu_clicks, and retain the final synchronization for changes made later in the frame.

Suggested fix
// Shortcuts deferred last frame: the text field has taken that frame's typing since.
         let deferred = std::mem::take(&mut self.deferred_commands);
+        self.sync_native_menu(ctx);

Preserve the build label.

A 16-character limit truncates supported labelled versions such as 0.7.1 (release-test-a). Different builds can then produce the same reported version. Use a larger bounded limit that preserves typical build labels.

Review comment at @crates/engine/src/links.rs at line 38:
Increase the bounded character limit in the `short` closure so typical supported
version labels, such as `0.7.1 (release-test-a)`, are preserved; retain the
control-character filtering and keep the output limit bounded.

Use the issue form’s field IDs.

PR #5 defines document-info and system-info, not environment. GitHub uses field IDs for prefills, so the document marker will not populate its field. The URL also supplies no system information for system-info. Pass those values under the form’s actual IDs and supply the system details from the UI. (github.com)

Update the bug-report URL in the format! expression to use the form’s
document-info and system-info field IDs instead of environment, passing the
document marker and system details from the UI under the matching IDs.

Stop classification when a resource container only gains entries.

If an indirect resource dictionary of a signed page keeps every signed entry and gains a new name, resource_kind returns None. classify then calls dictionary_change, which classifies an ordinary resource dictionary as OTHER. Signature validation therefore reports this additive change as disallowed. Return a distinct “skip” result and stop classification for this case. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @crates/sign/src/pdf/changes.rs at line 175:
Update resource_kind and its handling in classify so an indirect resource
dictionary that preserves all signed entries and only adds names returns a
distinct skip result, and classify stops processing it instead of falling
through to dictionary_change and classifying it as OTHER.

Match the form IDs with the URL builder.

crates/engine/src/links.rs:44 emits environment and body, but this form defines document-info and system-info. GitHub uses each form element's id as the canonical query parameter for prefills. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Only version and os currently match. The document and system fields remain empty. Update the builder and its tests to emit system-info and document-info, or change this form and the contract together.
