feat(ui): flash the destination after following an internal link (#4787) - #7
After a GoTo link, the destination is flashed with the viewer's existing flash (the one the Accessibility, Compare and calculation-order panels use): the rectangle for /FitR, a line-high box at the point for /XYZ, /FitH and /FitV (clamped to the crop box). /Fit and position-less destinations mark nothing. Bookmarks are unchanged.
Limits, plainly: the issue reports Acrobat blinks a border for a few seconds. I could not check Acrobat here, so this is a single ~1.6 s fade of the existing flash, not a blink, and the box size for point destinations (160 x 24 pt) is my approximation; Acrobat's rule is undocumented.
Tests:canvas::tests::a_followed_link_flashes_where_its_destination_lands (unit; the function did not exist before). Ran cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --lib for it, fmt --check and clippy -D-style (no warnings) on Linux. The click-to-flash wiring (one call in the link branch) has no end-to-end test, and I did not run the app window, Windows or macOS.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added native menu bars on macOS and consistent in-window menus on other platforms, with shared commands and shortcuts.
Added brief destination highlights when following internal page links.
Added document editing, undo and redo, bookmark browsing, comment summaries, and page filtering.
Expanded document security, accessibility, forms, signatures, XFA, and PDF opening and recovery support.
Bug Fixes
Improved redaction cleanup for custom fonts and made font loading less likely to delay text display.
Improved form-action updates and command handling while editing form fields.
The doc comment for SplitPart had drifted above the LabelStyle re-export; it is back on SplitPart.

* feat(ui): menus from craft-menu, native on macOS
One menu definition (crates/ui-egui/src/menus.rs) built from the command
registry drives the native macOS menu bar (craft-menu's muda backend) and
an in-window egui bar on Windows, Linux and the web, which takes the place
of the "Menu" button at the start of the top bar.
- File, Edit, View, Sign, Window and Help, with separators and submenus.
Edit gains Cut, Paste, Delete and Select All (they act as their keys
do) and a Pages submenu; View gains a Tools submenu built from the All
tools groups; Sign holds Fill & Sign and the certificate commands;
Window lists the open documents.
- Toggles are check items and the page layouts, side panels and themes
radio items, with their state from the app.
- File > Open Recent lists the recent files (file.open_recent with an
index).
- A menu click and its shortcut run the same dispatch, including the
form-field deferral (storytold#166) and macOS Cmd+W closing the window (storytold#869).
Dialogs and the palette grey the menus through craft-menu's gate.
- Quit goes through craft-quit, so the unsaved-changes prompt runs.
- craft-ui, craft-quit, craft-menu and craft-keymap pinned to
storytold/craft-libs 70ade1fb.
Menu state and dispatch follow storytold#2610 by @hajdukste; the menu tree and the
view and panel items follow storytold#3870 by @RivanJarjes.
* test(ui): the menu model, native dispatch and the in-window bar
- Unit tests for the menu definition: every registry menu command is
listed once with its registry shortcut; check and radio items follow
the app; a dialog greys document commands and drops their clicks; the
recent files and open documents are listed once each; a native menu
click (through a fake craft-menu backend) runs its command once.
- The kittests that opened the old "Menu" button use the menu bar, and
the ones that look up a label the bar's titles share (Edit, File,
Sign) skip the bar.
- The in-window bar takes its titles' width, so the mode tabs, search
and buttons keep their place in the top bar.
- Edit menu clicks that stand for keys (Copy, Cut, Delete, Select All)
reach this frame's input from `logic`, where test hosts see them too.
* test(ui): the language switch test opens File in the menu bar
Translated titles and rows carry their mnemonic ("ファイル(F)", "開く(O)…").
* feat(ui): the menu bars run Quit themselves, the bar shrinks to its titles, and AppKit's window list stays off
craft-libs main edc41f6 (craft-libs#354): MenuBarUi runs Quit and Minimize, shrink_to_fit sizes the in-window bar, Key::parse reads the registry's arrow and minus glyphs, and mac::install_with(.., window_list(false)) keeps the Window menu to PdfCraft's own document list.
* fix(ui): the menu command filter is an if, for clippy
* test(ui): drop a needless borrow in the edit-tab helper
* test(ui): two tests follow the menu bar
The tests were wrong, not the app. The Preferences language test clicked the old Menu button; it opens Edit in the menu bar and its Preferences row. The prepare Actions test counted the Edit labels: the narrower menu bar leaves room for the Edit tab, so the rows' Edit buttons come third and fourth.
…rytold#4787)
Following a GoTo link now flashes the place it lands on, using the existing
view flash: the rectangle of a /FitR destination, or a line-high box at the
point of /XYZ, /FitH and /FitV. Fit and position-less destinations mark
nothing.
The pull request adds engine APIs for document opening, editing, history, security, and PDF utilities. It adds Type 3 font cleanup to redaction and introduces native and in-window menus. It also updates internal-link highlighting, form action handling, demo fonts, and architecture notes.

Merge Risk: High · up to 3ade4
Merging can produce weakened browser encryption and damaged redacted output, while also losing recovery history and important XFA diagnostics.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 3ade4
Redaction now modifies resources shared across a document. Its incomplete accounting of surviving uses can remove content outside the selected areas. Link highlighting remains display-only, and the inspected permission checks are preserved.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: The new document-wide Type 3 cleanup treats page and Form glyph usage as the complete live set before mutating shared font objects. Uses through surviving annotation appearances, tiling patterns, or glyph programs are not included. If one of those contexts shares a discovered font, cleanup can delete still-needed CharProcs outside the selected redaction area while returning success. This weakens failure containment for a destructive security operation.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A document author controls the PDF resource graph and can arrange shared Type 3 font references. Once a user applies redaction, the new cleanup operates across the opened document, not only the selected page or rectangle. The supported concern is collateral document-content loss; the inspected path does not establish cross-document access or privilege escalation.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A shared font discovered in page or Form resources can also serve a surviving rendering context that the usage scanner does not traverse. Glyphs used only there are absent from used_glyphs, so clean_type3_font removes them from the shared font. This is a source-derived integrity concern introduced by the new cleanup, not a demonstrated confidentiality exploit.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Menu commands recheck the current modal gate and enabled state before dispatch. Registry commands use the same dispatch path as keyboard shortcuts, including deferral while a form draft is active. The inspected application wiring does not introduce a separate permission-bypassing edit path.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Type 3 cleanup rejects unsupported encodings, direct Type 3 font objects, and some unreadable stream syntax. It independently scans discovered Forms and tracks inherited font/resource contexts. These are meaningful safeguards, but they cover the modeled traversal rather than proving all rendering consumers have been accounted for.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Establish a complete live-glyph analysis across surviving rendering contexts before mutating shared fonts, or reject cleanup when that analysis cannot be established. Keep analysis and mutation separate so successful redaction preserves content outside its intended scope.

Replace the per-page holder scan with a lookup map.
For each page without its own /Resources, the fallback at line 476 calls holders.iter().find(|(_, users)| users.contains(&p.obj)). contains scans the holder's users vector linearly. For N inheriting pages in one holder, this costs about N²/2 comparisons. The fallback runs only when the document has Type 3 fonts, because unlink_type3 returns early otherwise.
The walk stops collecting nodes once seen exceeds MAX_HOLDERS, so the number of inheriting pages is bounded by that constant. Its value is not shown in the inspected code, so the practical magnitude is unknown.
Each page appears in at most one holder's users list, so a page-to-holder map gives the same result as the find.
♻️ Proposed change
let mut ctx = ScanContext { doc, font_maps: &font_maps, used_glyphs: &mut used_glyphs, seen_forms: &mut seen_drawn_forms };
+ let holder_of: HashMap<ObjRef, ObjRef> = holders.iter().flat_map(|(h, users)| users.iter().map(move |u| (*u, *h))).collect();
for (pi, p) in page_list.iter().enumerate() {
let (_, content) = page_streams(ctx.doc, &p.dict, pi)?;
let page_res = p
.dict
.get(b"Resources")
.and_then(|r| ctx.doc.resolve(r).as_dict().cloned())
.or_else(|| {
- holders.iter().find(|(_, users)| users.contains(&p.obj)).and_then(|(h, _)| {+ holder_of.get(&p.obj).and_then(|h| {
ctx.doc.get(*h).as_dict().and_then(|d| d.get(b"Resources")).and_then(|ro| ctx.doc.resolve(ro).as_dict().cloned())
})
})
The check at line 487, ctx.seen_forms.iter().any(|(form, _, _)| form == form_ref), scans the whole seen_forms set once per form holder. This is also quadratic in the form count. A precomputed set would not include forms that the loop adds to seen_forms, so it would need separate handling before it can replace this check.

Sort by the original modification date, not the display string.
pretty_date keeps only the year through minute and drops seconds and the timezone. It also returns non-matching /M values unchanged. Lexical comparison can therefore treat distinct timestamps as equal or order non-canonical values incorrectly. Keep a parsed date as the sort key and format a separate display value.

Add the missing wordings to EDIT_LABELS.
The doc comment says that EDIT_LABELS holds every wording Edit::label can produce. These wordings from Edit::label are not in the list:
"Automatically tag text" (Edit::AutoTagText, Line 780)
"Tag form fields" (Edit::AutoTagFormFields, Line 782)
"Mark content as artifact" (Edit::MarkTagArtifact, Line 786)
"Crop image" (ImageEdit::Crop, Line 802)
"Convert to a static form" (Edit::XfaToStatic, Line 832)
An interface that builds its translation table from EDIT_LABELS never translates these. Their undo/redo labels then show in English. Add the five strings. A test can then check that every label matches a list entry.

Add the five missing `Edit::label` wordings to `EDIT_LABELS`: “Automatically tag
text,” “Tag form fields,” “Mark content as artifact,” “Crop image,” and “Convert
to a static form.” Place them alongside the related existing labels so
translation tables include every label those edit variants can produce.

<excerpt>citeturn0search0 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last week; `getrandom` is a Rust library for retrieving random data from (operating) system sources. ... This crate derives its name from the Linux `getrandom` syscall but is cross-platform, roughly supporting the same set of platforms as Rust's `std` library.
### WebAssembly support
This crate fully supports the WASI and Emscripten targets. However, the `wasm32-unknown-unknown` and `wasm64-unknown-unknown` targets (i.e. the target used by `wasm-pack`) are not automatically supported since, from the target name alone, we cannot deduce which JavaScript interface should be used (or if JavaScript is available at all).
We do not include support for these targets in the default configuration because our JS backend (supporting web browsers, web workers and Node.js v19 or later) requires `wasm-bindgen`, bloating `Cargo.lock` and potentially breaking builds on non-web WASM platforms.
To enable `getrandom`'s functionality on `wasm32/64-unknown-unknown` using `Crypto.getRandomValues` via `wasm-bindgen`, enable the `wasm_js` crate feature.
WARNING: We strongly recommend against enabling this feature in libraries (except for tests) since it is known to break non-Web WASM builds and further since the usage of `wasm-bindgen` causes significant bloat to `Cargo.lock` (on all targets).

# `wasm32-unknown-unknown`
Tier: 2
The `wasm32-unknown-unknown` target is a WebAssembly compilation target which does not import any functions from the host for the standard library. This is the “minimal” WebAssembly in the sense of making the fewest assumptions about the host environment. This target is often used when compiling to the web or JavaScript environments as there is no standard for what functions can be imported on the web. This target can also be useful for creating minimal or bare-bones WebAssembly binaries.
The `wasm32-unknown-unknown` target has support for the Rust standard library but many parts of the standard library do not work and return errors. For example `println!` does nothing, `std::fs` always return errors, and `std::thread::spawn` will panic. There is no means by which this can be overridden. For a WebAssembly target that more fully supports the standard library see the `wasm32-wasip1` or `wasm32-wasip2` targets.
The `wasm32-unknown-unknown` target has full support for the `core` and `alloc` crates. </excerpt>

## 0.3.4 - 2025-10-14
### Major change to `wasm_js` backend
Now, when the `wasm_js` feature is enabled, the `wasm_js` backend will be used by default. Users of `wasm32-unknown-unknown` targeting JavaScript environments like the Web and Node.js will no longer need to specify:
`--cfg getrandom_backend="wasm_js"
`
in `RUSTFLAGS` for the crate to compile. They can now simple enable a feature.
Note: this should not affect non-JS users of the `wasm32-unknown-unknown` target. Using `--cfg getrandom_backend` will still override the source of randomness even if the `wasm_js` feature is enabled. This includes `--cfg getrandom_backend=custom` and `--cfg getrandom_backend=unsupported`.
For more information, see the discussions in #671, #675, and #730.
### Added
* `unsupported` opt-in backend #667
* `windows_legacy` opt-in backend #724
### Changed
* Implement Memory Sanitizer unpoisoning more precisely #678
* Relax MSRV for the `linux_raw` opt-in backend on ARM targets #688
* Use `getrandom` syscall on all RISC-V Linux targets #699
* Replaced `wasi` dependency with `wasip2` #721
* Enable `wasm_js` backend by default if the `wasm_js` feature is enabled #730
### Removed
* Unstable `rustc-dep-of-std` crate feature #694

Use a cryptographically secure random source for AES-256 encryption material.
EditCtx::entropy supplies NewEncryption.seed. For AES-256, pdfcraft_crypt::create derives the file key and salts from that seed. On wasm32-unknown-unknown, RandomState does not provide randomized hash state, while the remaining seed inputs are document generation, document ID, and an optional clock value.
Use getrandom with its wasm_js backend, or another CSPRNG supported by every target. Propagate an unavailable-randomness error instead of falling back to RandomState.

Update EditCtx::entropy to obtain its 32 bytes from a cryptographically secure
random source supported on every target, including wasm32-unknown-unknown, and
return an error if randomness is unavailable. Propagate that error through the
NewEncryption seed flow; do not fall back to RandomState or other deterministic
inputs.

Clear the redo stack only after the refresh succeeds.
apply empties editor.redo at Line 313, before the refresh at Line 315. If the refresh fails, the rollback at Lines 319-324 restores cos and keys from the undo entry it pops. It cannot restore the redo stack. A user who undoes, tries an edit that then fails to display, and gets the error loses every redo step, even though the document "was not changed".
Take the redo stack before the refresh. Put it back on rollback.

Scan misses surviving Type 3 text in annotation appearances and patterns. This can strip glyphs that still draw.
unlink_type3 builds surviving only from page content streams and from Form XObjects reachable through /XObject resources (Lines 469-492). It does not scan these other places where a Type 3 font can draw text:
annotation /AP streams
tiling pattern streams
/Resources of other Type 3 glyph programs
Take a Type 3 font that a page resource dictionary also names. If an annotation appearance draws glyph B and no page draws it, clean_type3_font removes B from /CharProcs. The surviving annotation then loses that glyph.
The same path applies to the char_procs.is_empty() branch. It deletes /CharProcs and /Resources of a font that a skipped stream still uses.
Add these streams to the scan. Alternatively, skip glyph pruning for any font reached from a stream the scan did not cover. Both options keep the fail-closed intent of this module.

Clear the flash when the destination page is unavailable.
If a valid link starts a flash and the next destination names an unknown page, this return leaves the first flash in place. go_to_dest clamps the unknown page, so the retained mark can identify the wrong destination. Clear self.flash before returning. Add a test that starts with an active flash before checking the unknown-page case.

Preserve existing warnings when rebase creates new DocInfo.
A dynamic XFA layout failure adds a warning to the current info. If the same file also needs page-tree recovery, the later successful rebase(&work) returns fresh metadata and replaces that warning. This violates the documented XFA-warning persistence contract. Pass the current warnings into every rebase call and merge them into the inspected metadata.

Fixes storytold#4787 (storytold/pdfcraft).
Tests:
canvas::tests::a_followed_link_flashes_where_its_destination_lands(unit; the function did not exist before). Rancargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --libfor it, fmt --check and clippy -D-style (no warnings) on Linux. The click-to-flash wiring (one call in the link branch) has no end-to-end test, and I did not run the app window, Windows or macOS.Summary by CodeRabbit
